Is anyone else getting the vibe?

That this reintroduction of the Turtles to the mainstream is going to be another explosion the likes of the 80's-90's Turtles popularity?

I mean, yeah the 2k3 was cool and all. And it was awesome to see them back on our shelves, and on TV. But, itjust didn't feel like it had that same oomph. Neithe r did the 2007 movie. But with the Nick cartoon, both new toylines, the movie, the upcoming Alamo Filmhouse Ninja Turtles movie deal going on, etc etc....

...I just have a good feeling it's going to BOOM the likes of which we haven't seen since we were children (those old enough to remember).

Anyone else?

Powder 07-10-2011 01:02 AM

Nope. I'm confident it will be large, probably moreso than 2k3, but it will never touch the OG's level of popularity. Nothing like it had come before. Now, that's not the case. Kids these days have seen plenty of anthropomorphic animals fighting (most of which were inspired by the TMNT to an extent, I imagine).

Jester 07-10-2011 01:13 AM

I don't think anything can regain the mania that was Turtles in the 90's. But, if this does, I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

Kendamu 07-10-2011 01:22 AM

I wouldn't be too surprised if it got something more close to Avatar: The Last Airbender in popularity, but I haven't seen anything as popular as TMNT ever since Pokemon (Yugioh was close, but no cigar).

ToTheNines 07-10-2011 06:59 AM

Impossible. No kids show will get that popular again, just because kids have changed since those days. A lot of the time, today's youth will go straight from watching Nick Jr. to playing Call of Duty.

Anywho... what's this Alamo Filmhouse business you're talking about?

Yeah, what is this Alamo Filmhouse. I thought Platinum Dunes was going to produce the new film.

Anyway: whenever something is remade, nothing can beat the original. Still, Batman: The Animated Series seemed to change that. That was big, and so was The Batman and Batman: Brave and the Bold. So like the OT turtle series, the 2k12 may become the biggest thing since that, but not as big as what it was. Still, this show looks like it's going to get a lot of PR (public relations - not Power Rangers). :tlol: Take that Supah Ninjas!

MrPliggins 07-10-2011 11:13 AM

I don't think so. With Nickelodeon behind it, it'll probably be more popular than the 2k3 show, which kinda flew under the radar. (I'm still surpised at the number of people who aren't even aware of its existence). But the original series' popularity was just insane. Nearly entire aisles at toy stores were dedicated to TMNT at one point. Everyone was aware of TMNT and loved it. Perhaps there was some mind control in the form of subliminal messages?

CyberCubed 07-10-2011 11:18 AM

Anyone notice that there have never been any big action cartoon fads after the likes of TMNT, Power Rangers and then Pokemon and Dragonball Z?

Other shows have gotten popular, but we've never seen anything to the extreme of those 4 shows when they were at the height of their popularities.

That's what I was saying. The original was bigger, and this new one may do well, too.:tsmile: The 2k3 might have been the second animated series for the TMNT, but the 2k12 one may be the second popular animated series of TMNT history. We'll just have to find out ourselves. But this sounds like a strong effort for Nickelodeon.:tgrin:

Spitfire 07-10-2011 11:29 PM

I'd like to imagine turtles getting big again but I don't see it happening. Kids have even shorter attention spans now. Turtles will blip on their radar for a very short period of time. I see it being popular for a year and then fading away again. Not to say the show won't last very long I just don't see it being huge for very long. Though a good movie could keep it in the public eye for much longer which is why they should be targeting more then just kids.

The 80's/90's kid crowd will still profess that the OT was the best ever and no other turtles cartoon will ever be able to top it. No matter how awesome the new series is they will find stupid **** to complain about. Like how Shredder can actually out think a watermelon or Bebop and Rocksteady not being in it, because they're the be all end all of TMNT characters to those people.

Utromshredderhater 07-11-2011 01:18 PM

I don't think so because in recent years Nickelodeon hasn't been worth "beep".
I am sorry but this network has not been the same since the days of Kenan and Kel, Angry Beavers, Pete and Pete and Snick. All the shows they have now a rubbish and if that is what truly appeals to kids these days then that is just sad. Plus based on what we've been shown of the new show so far and their intended plans this show is gonna have more hate then the 1998 zilla flick

And I bet you'll watch every episode without fail.

If the new show is half as entertaining as iCarly then we have a winner on our hands.

All of this Nickelodeon was better in my day bullsh*t needs to stop. I love Kenan & Kel to death but Angry Beavers, Real Monsters and Rocko are garbage without the nostalgia goggles on.

Donnie 07-11-2011 02:46 PM

History has already shown us that Nick really does care about the core TMNT fan-base by having the invite-only "Pizza Box" fiasco, letting IDW write a PG-13 comic not related to their own Nick plots/story lines, scheduling tons of new figures to be released including a Classics line, giving the movie a green light, etc.

Even if the new show isn't that great, I think we win in the end. To answer the main question of this thread, I do think the toon is going to do well and we are going to experience a re-surgance of TMNT, surpassing that of the 2k3. I wouldn't be surprised if it *almost* became as big as it was in the 80s/90s. To those who doubt so surely: do you have a crystal ball? You deal out the end-all pretty quickly.

This is exactly why fans of the original show will never give the new show a chance. Simply because it is not the show they grew up watching, they feel the new stuff is crap by default.

Basically, what Stryker said

Thank you, Stryker. I agree with you. If you think about it, Nickelodeon had its share of crap back then. Besides Rocko's Modern Life, there was also CatDog, Ren and Stimpy, and that other show, Aaahh! Real Monsters. I do miss some of the old shows, but I rather have MTV back as Music TV rather than "Reality TV." Nickelodeon doesn't bother me as much. It's Disney Channel that needs to get their act together.

Thank you, DonnieTMNT. You've summed it up so well. I'm hoping this will be a good show, and I think Nick is devoting their time to make it so.

I grew up in the 90's, and I have no problem with this project. I'm open to superhero incarnations or reboots.:tsmile:

Good for you.

But the point remains. I see it so often, people saying old school nickelodeon or disney, or fox kids was so great and nothing will ever be as good so they don't give it a chance.

Same here. I can still watch Rocko. It's still funny to me, especially since I can catch the jokes that were obviously aimed at adults now.

I miss the way Disney Channel used to be. It was more like a station with programming aimed at families with some children programming tossed in too. Now it's aimed at tweens and teens. Nickelodeon, imo, has the same problem.

The Stryker 07-11-2011 07:58 PM

There are still a bunch of family shows on disney but the money makers are the tweenish shows.

It's been like this for a long time and there's nothing wrong with it at all. The Jersey and Famous Jett Jackson weren't high art either.

The shows aren't marketed towards your group. That doesn't mean they're doing something wrong.

sdp 07-11-2011 08:13 PM

I've actually made a thread about how fads haven't been as big and a thread about how the new show is going to be huge.

I think its hard to know just how big something is if you aren't a kid since you don't even realize how big some stuff is, Hannah Montana definitely seemed pretty fad like even if it was for girls. Transformers while not being new has definitely been pretty damn popular.

Now for the new show, like I've mentioned before the new show is going to be huge, fairly close if not as big as the original TMNT fad. Nick is the #1 kids network, no matter what show they air its going to get great ratings and lots of kids watching it. Just look at Power Rangers, the series had been in decline in ratings for years and is now as popular as its ever been since the fad died. And this is also considered one of the worst seasons of PRs so even if the quality isn't amazing it will get viewers, counting TMNT is Viacoms own property unlike PRs they will market it even more than they did PRs.

That was the trend for the past few years in Nick/Disney and even CN but all three networks seem to have decided to also want some of the action of boys, Disney bought Marvel, Nick got PRs and TMNT, CN got DC shows and Thundercats among many other examples, we're seeing a ton of action shows being made for all three networks.

:tgrumble:Stryker, I'm not thinking about the money they're making.:tgrumble: I'm thinking about the plotlines of these shows. So far their shows, with the exception of Phineas and Ferb, stink. Come on! Shake It Up? I can't believe how bad that is.:tlol: Seriously. I only liked That's So Raven when it used to be on. I know money is important, but I usually like to think about the quality of the product. Disney would do anything to put out a show, whether it's good or bad. At this point, their TV shows are bad, and they're still getting money for it.

So that's why I think Disney Channel needs to get their act together, because their shows are worse than Nickelodeon's. You may not have to agree with me. That's just the way I feel. So I'm not being dumb. I'm just not thinking in terms of money.:twink: That's all.

Also, you're right. I'm older now. Disney Channel's not intended for me anyway. I still pay attention to the theatrical Disney or Pixar films, though. In fact, I still like Disney World.:tgrin:

The Stryker 07-11-2011 08:48 PM

Oy. They're not good shows to you because you're not the audience for it. You ask any kid and they'll tell you that So Random is the funniest sh*t they've ever seen.

They're kids shows. Kids love them and spend money on things associated with the show. Mission accomplished. Fad shows from the past were just as bad or worse. It's all the same sh*t.

The shows didn't get worse. You got older.

And all of them are still around minus TMNT which is returning soon. Oh and Power Rangers isn't a cartoon.

I don't appreciate this condescension. I get it, thank you.:tgrumble: I've added on my previous post that's these shows are not for my age anyway. Besides, I happen to have a little brother who likes these shows. And let me tell you; you don't know how much he has told me about this crap every time he watches it. Do you know how tired I get when he sings "Socks and Sandals?" I think we should let this go before things get ugly.

Maybe we should talk about a topic where we'd love to see the turtles beat the pulp out of the Supah Ninjas.

What if
Hey guys
What if we took the turtles and put them on adult swim. Adult swim has great adult cartoons these days and is the only thing that caters to us adults. Whachya think? Problem solved! We could have good bloody ass beating fun this way for us older folk who think ninja turtles are totally badass. Oh, and they could swear. OMG, I am so smart.

Hey guys....
I am getting that vibe.

ToTheNines 07-12-2011 04:18 PM

Adult Swim is for pot heads. Stoner Swim doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely.

Jester 07-12-2011 05:02 PM

Yeah, I fear most "adults" have outgrown Adult Swim.

John Pannozzi 07-12-2011 06:06 PM

Plus the Turtles are part of the MTV/Viacom family, whereas Adult Swim is belongs to TimeWarner.

But what if MTV2 or Spike TV considering a harder-edged Mirage-inspires TMNT series?????

Jester 07-12-2011 06:25 PM

I could get behind that. heck, I wish they'd do a one off animated movie that is solely an adaptation of TMNT 1. Black in white...save red bandanas and maybe blood. Very "Miller-esque."

No way. Like I said. We can have blood. But do we really need that much? I don't. No rated M or R TMNT show or movie. I prefer PG-13. Adult Swim is sick and disgusting. TMNT doesn't belong there.

Spike TV could work since they play a lot of CSI and Star Trek: The Next Generation. But MTV2? No way. After what MTV has become today with that Jersey Shore and Teen Mom crap, no way are these four dudes getting a show on any channel that's meant to play music videos. I know you're talking about MTV2, but it's like VH1 Classic, but not the official VH1. It's still part of MTV. So Spike could work. :tsmile: But I wish the show would be a one hour series played on Nick at Nite. That would be cool. Nick's first superhero action/comedy/drama series. Something like Smallville, except not on the CW.

Hopefully, that could be done in the future. Who knows.

July 19th is the Hooters Swimsuit Pageant... These are things that are shown during primetime hours. Adult Swim doesn't even start until late at night...
