Three Toes

So I've noticed that a lot of people seem to hate the new three toe design for the nick show, so I figured I might as well ask what people thought. Personally I don't really care either way. It seems to make sense since they have 3 fingers. I've never really understood why they didn't have five of both considering that turtles do, at least as far as I remember from the pet one I used to have.

discordiatookie 07-24-2011 01:32 PM

I'm in the camp of I don't really care that an extra toe has been added. I do find it a bit strange why it has been added, and haven't actually heard any explanations, but to be honest, in neither gets me up nor down.

They have always had three toes.

The new show designs simply moved their "heel toe" to the front.

I don't care but I admit I'm interested in why they felt the need to change it.

ToTheNines 07-24-2011 01:42 PM

I was pissed when I first heard about it. Mainly because the turtles have pretty much had the same type of foot no matter what show, movie or comic they were in, and adding a 3rd toe to that look would be very awkward. But as you can tell from what we've seen so far, this new character design totally overhauls their feet.

Honestly, the way their feet are drawn now, it would look awkward if they had two toes.

gobo 07-24-2011 01:58 PM

It's apparently not gonna be all Viacom-controlled incarnations, so I'm hardly concerned. Since I only have the vaguest, fleeting interest in the Nicktoon, that won't bug me much. If they decide to do it in the movie though, I'll be ticked. It's just distracting.

Same here. In the beginning I wanted to murder the employee who felt it was a good idea, now I just wanna kick 'em. It's whatever.

Zog the Equalizer 07-24-2011 03:06 PM

The more I look at the designs the more I'm starting to like it. At least in this particular style

Donnie 07-24-2011 03:07 PM

Personally, I love it and think it's better fitting.

Jester 07-24-2011 05:56 PM

Meh!
Spoiler:
Made ya look!

triplexxx 07-24-2011 06:43 PM

Well I got to be honest, regardless of real-life turtle anatomy or what the "heel" is interpreted as, since I'm completely accustomed to seeing them with two, I don't support the idea. The pupils I never cared one way or the other, the finger- and toe-nails in the live action movies weren't much of a bother either, but this is anatomy change is a little too major in my opinion. That's my entire thought on this and I swear never to mention it again.

Jephael 07-24-2011 09:01 PM

This topic has been beaten like a dead horse long enough!

1984TMNT 07-25-2011 12:48 PM

Hate it. Aside from the fact that they've always had 2 toes, I Just don't like the look.

1984TMNT 07-25-2011 02:08 PM

What I don't quite get is the argument around the new foot design being "easier" to handle with CG when compared to the normal 2-toed (or "3" toes including the rear "heel"). Can anyone further explain this? If they can handle 3 fingers on their hands, one would think that the feel wouldn't be much different....?

I'm about the same here :)

the way they are designed now the animators don't need to animate too much, the feet are almost like a one big lump like a shoe. I guess 2 toes in the same circular style didn't look as good as they wanted it to be. So they gave them teddy bear feet

It's probably easier to animate a big lump than it is the prong-esque feet of yore... I dunno.

1984TMNT 07-25-2011 04:29 PM

I'm sure it's easier, but if they have to do it for the fingers, is it really that much more work? That's what I don't get.

gobo 07-25-2011 04:37 PM

^ No, but it's just an extra corner they can cut.

Kendamu 07-25-2011 07:53 PM

Looking at what I saw at the MiP, it looks more like a style choice than cutting corners.

gobo 07-25-2011 08:08 PM

Well, ya can't expect them to admit it. :P I'm sure the animators don't mind having to work with those ridged tree trunks rather than actual foot-fingers.

Vincent 07-28-2011 03:15 PM

I picked "I hate it" in the poll, but only for lack of better alternatives. I disagree with it and think it seems mostly like change for the sake of change, which seems pointless, since the two toes thing has kind of been consistently a part of the ninja turtle image throughout every incarnation in the past. Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? No. But it's unnecessary.

The Stryker 07-28-2011 04:24 PM

It's not an issue at all and it doesn't even require any 'why' questioning. It's a design choice and nothing more.

All of this "I want an explanation" stuff is ridiculous.

Volvagia 07-28-2011 04:33 PM

I don't mind them having three toes but I hate how they look, urgh.

That's your opinion.....a lot of people think the design choice flat out sucks.

Whitewolf89 08-17-2011 03:18 PM

Personally, I'M not that fond of the change, either, but, other than when I start drawing them later on, I doubt that I'll be paying THAT much attention to their feet, anyway, prefering to focus on their faces and upper bodies, AND the fact that we're getting a new TMNT series so soon after the 2K3 one ended, instead of having to wait close to 10 years. THAT's the important thing here, in MY (very) humble opinion.

Do I wish that Nick had stuck to their original design of two toes? Goes without saying, as with some other folks around here, but I'm sure that I'll get used to it, and comfortable with it eventually.

Besides, there are other aspects of the new series that I like a LOT less than the guys having three toes on each foot (which remind me of elephant's hooves, to be honest). Splinter being Hamato Yoshi mutated into a rat (ALA the 80's series), and 6 feet tall (too weird for me, when thinking about Splinter's height), rather than his pet rat, like he's been in the comics, movies and the 2K3 series, AND April being the guys' age, rather than an adult, like she should be. So, compared to these, the guys having three toes is nothin'.

IMHO.

Sword Slicin' Leo 08-17-2011 03:27 PM

Would'nt say i hate it, but i don't see why they went to three toes...but whatever

And? Going about saying "I want an explanation" is still stupid. It's a choice they made and I doubt there's some giant elaborate story behind it.

Koi 08-17-2011 07:41 PM

The third toe on each foot are actually mutated turtle heads growing out of their feet.

Explanation complete. No need for thanks! :3

The Stryker 08-17-2011 07:48 PM

You are just the worst type of person. Let me start a private facebook group and you'll get what's coming to you.

The real answer is that the creators really love sporks and wanted them represented on the show.

Koi 08-17-2011 08:16 PM

Omg, they do look like freakin sporks. My mind is blown.

Ninjinister 08-18-2011 03:07 AM

Sporks are amazing. I now completely support the three-toed turtles.

*shakes head* I really sometimes dont get you guys...why that aggressive over nothing...there are much worse things in the world than fictional chars having three toes...

Besides...REAL turtles DO have more toes AND fingers...if you can call it fingers that is...

Slap-Happy 08-18-2011 12:55 PM

Who the f*ck really cares about a third toe? I mean the new designs look very different from other things we've seen already, the feet would look awkward with two toes.

I've always been a nitpicker, but the third toe was from the start the least of my worries. I like it better, anyway. It goes well with the Nick Turtles. I voted "I like it"...I wonder who the other 4 were? We're certainly in the minority.

If you think I *actually* wanted to murder anyone over a toe, you need to adopt a sense of humor.

Well, obviously people care - all you have to do is read the forums to see that. I don't see how having 2 toes would look awkward with Nick's designs...? Because their legs are thick where the "ankle" should be? Obviously they would need to re-design that a bit to make it look right.

Anyway, as most have stated, this isn't a deal breaker for anyone (that I've noticed). But, it's a design that a lot of people don't like, so people will vent about it. Including me. :trazz:

Well put, indeed, sir.

Filespit 10-12-2011 02:36 PM

They're getting a third toe!? That's news to me, I've completely missed this, and I don't like it. Why not give them a fourth finger as well? They've always had two toes, it's part of them, so why change it? This is sort of like shaving Mario's moustache! Well, not really but you get the point!

Redeemer 10-12-2011 02:49 PM

Truthfully I dont like the three toe design, it jst sticks out to me.....But I think will adjust, jst let me adjust my nostalgia goggles a little!!!!
I think I will eventaully get used to it, the idea and design is jst so foriegn to me

Oh and I voted to be a hater by the way ;)

BubblyShell22 10-12-2011 03:25 PM

While I'm not keen on the idea, I feel that I'll get used to it the more I watch the show. Like others have said, we need to at least be glad that Nick's even going to give us a Turtles show at all. I say wait and see. Maybe it won't be as bad as many are saying.

I think Nick is giving them a third toe, not only to try something different, but really to make sense of the turtles' mutations. They have three fingers. You would expect they have three toes if you never heard of them. Just like humans, we have five fingers on each hand, and we have five toes on each foot. Therefore, it makes sense why Nick would be giving them three toes. I don't really care about it that much. I'm just paying attention to the leg wrappings each character has. They look cool, by the way.:tsmile:
