Rip-off TMNT cartoon?
I've been trying to recall this cartoon that used to air in the early 90's on WB I believe. It featured these mutant lizards/dinos that were crime fighters, and I think there were four of them. I believe they each had their own special ability, and one of them was able to eat metal. I believe they wore a kind of armor or some other kind of mech gear and may have played sports? This series was short-lived, but I'm pretty sure it aired on the WB with Stunt Dawgs and other cartoons during that time
Does anyone else remember this cartoon? I've been trying to look it up but I don't have any good leads yet. |
Extreme Dinosaurs?
Show was basically made to sell toys, on top of rip off TMNT. |
no not those guys. These characters were all T-rex or raptor-like lizards that were a little more cartoony and about the size of humans. They had a leader among them too who was much like a Leonardo character.

No idea you got me stumped. You can wiki networks though and see all the programming they ever showed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._by_Kids%27_WB If you do that you'll probably find it if you can remember the right network. I glanced at this quickly and didn't see anything that stuck out. EDIT: I found a series called Dinosaucers that might be it. It was produced by the same company that did the other show you mentioned, DIC. Here's a list of all their programs if you're interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...nment_programs |
Aside from Extreme Dinosaurs, Kung Fu Dino Posse came to mind, but that show came out only a little over a year ago...

Oh my gosh. I know this series. I don't like it, but I've seen previews of it back when I was a kid. First it was the toys, and then it was the series. I own video tapes of Extreme Ghostbusters that was recorded on BLT (or something) and I would see stuff on commercials about Extreme Dinosaurs. That is SO FUNNY!:tlol:

Now that I think of it, this show was probably more of a MMPR rip-off, but still had some TMNT elements |
I liked that show too! It seems pretty obscure now though. It used to come on back to back with Camp Candy and I would watch them both.
|
Terrible Thunder Lizards? I think they were meant to be comedic IIRC. Probably parodied elements of TMNT as opposed to being a "rip off".
|
Extreme Dinosaurs was a spin-off show from Street Sharks, which is jawsome.
|
The Adventures of T-Rex was just a product of all the fads of the time (teams of characters with distinct personalities, mutants, animals, etc).
I remember this show too, but I only got to see a few episodes of it. I remember whatever channel I got that played that show would rerun the same eps over and over again so I gave up on it. |
Wasn't tmnt a rip off of other comics?

I do remember that show! Even as a kid I remember thinking, "Um...are they trying to be like the turtles?" Lol

Y'all know what else was a rip-off of TMNT?
MIGHTY MORPHING POWER RANGERS Yeah, I said it. Don't like it? Deal with it. |
As sure as I am that your post was trollbait, know that the show PR is adapted from was already running in Japan for 15 years prior to PR ever airing. Although the argument could probably be made that the decision to create and release PR in America may or may not have been in some way influenced by TMNT, somehow.
Now on the other hand, Power Rangers itself has a very much direct ripoff show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r0sKNIf8Fk |
As a kid I honestly did think that PR was a TMNT rip-off, but I did find out later as an adult the whole business about it being a Japanese show that got imported, and was therefore running in Japan long before airing in the US.
But I def agree with you, Cryomancer, that the decision to get that show on in the US had to be in response to the popularity of the Turtles. (group of hip teens, color coordinated, multiple adjective title, etc) |

I remember watching The Adventures of T-Rex early Saturday Mornings back in the days, In fact, I remember there was an episode that they stole from an episode of TMNT.
|
You know what show really was similar to the OT?
In terms of animation/storylines/humor? "Toxic Crusaders". Seriously. Watch it sometime on Hulu. It's all, like, super good. |
Despite being based on Toxic Avenger that show definitely was following the TMNT trend.
On an unrelated note both of their toylines were made by Playmates, they often exchanged vehicle molds too. I think I remember reading something about a crossover that almost happened between the two... Or am I imagining things? |
I sure as **** hope you imagined that. >_<

The first "Toxic Avenger" was kinda hilarious, actually (in a mean-spirited/really retarded sorta way). The sequels, however, blew big nut sacks (excuse the expression). P.S. How was that note "unrelated"? It was, like, on the exact same topic? |

& I put unrelated in there because if I hadn't it would've read as if they were a ripoff for having gone through playmates toys. |
street sharks and stone protectors the real ghostbuster episode with mean green machine biker mice from mars
|
I'm not sure if "rip-off" is the right term for what those other shows were doing. They were just piggy backing on a trend. Toxic Crusaders, Biker Mice From Mars, Street Sharks, and others may have had similar concepts, and dynamics, but their series functioned in a different way, as did their heroes.
Maybe the closest thing to a rip-off to the turtles would be something trying to parody them? If TMNT is a satire of different comic ideas, then maybe a parody of a satire could be assumed as a rip-off? In my collection somewhere I have a comic called "Prepubescent Irradiated Kung Fu Gophers", and another one with a similar title with "kangaroos" replacing the word "gopher". I saw an ad once for a comic called "Bamino Snails", and if I'm not mistaken there's a popular comic called "Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters" thats still going on. |
In the UK, Channel 4 would show the most obscure cartoons on a Sunday morning. Jayce, Shark and George, Stone Protectors, Widget, Sonic SATAM. T-Rex was among them. I hated it, I knew what it was emulating right off the bat

Street Sharks and it's spin-off Extreme Dinosaurs are on Netflix now. I wasn't really a fan of them as a child and after trying to watch the first episode, I still don't really care for them. I thought the toys were awesome though. I even had a few of the Extreme Dinosaur action figures.
|
Let's not forget this show, in which the video game itself was a ripoff of TMNT (well, the Punk Frogs to be more precise):
I still get nightmares over that video game trying to beat it for the first time without using a Game Genie. And, David Wise wrote the pilot as well! |

Since they've been on Netflix I've put 'em in my queue, I actually really enjoy Extreme Dinosaurs! Dope designs and action aside (& the fact that it's a lot like the turtles) it features a bunch of TMNT voice actors from The Next Mutation. Jason gray-Standfod (Don), Lee Tockar (Wick), Gary Chalk (Silver), & Scott Mcneil (Bonesteel)!~ |
Street Sharks was pretty much 3 human brothers are mutated or gene slammed into animorphic sharks. Its been so long sense I saw the cartoon.I think DIC made it.I never saw the cartoon of Battletoads.Glad i didn't.I had the video game and it was a b!+ch.I was looking at the you tube video. The Dark Queen looks kinda hot.:D
|
The Adventures of T-Rex??? i dont remember them at all. i remember some other kinda obscure toons though. shows like denver the last dinosaur, foofur, the getalong gang, shirt tails, the biskitts, and probably the most rediculous...turbo teen (boy gets angry and turns into red sports car
|
Accaully with Tubo teen. When he heats up hge turns into a car. When he gets cold he turns back into a human.Yeah, really stupid.
|
