The Mona Lisa appreciation thread

A thread for fans of this fan fave lady.

I think she's quite an underrated character that should have more episodes, afterall she is Raph's girlfriend you know.

I remembered when i was 9 i had a crush on her as she is quite the mutant and nice legs too.

ngroove 04-05-2012 09:54 AM

Was 8, watched the episode, had her toy, basically THE reason why I've bought the Season 4 DVD set.

Killer Moth 04-05-2012 04:05 PM

She also had an awesome or smexy voice, too. I usually don't buy the "give the Turtles a love interest," but her, I could see a feasible relationship for Raph (or failing that, ithere is Don to be with, as she was a scientist, right?).

It's an interesting catch-22 with her, as "Sons of the Silent Age" demonstrated why there shouldn't no female Turtles, yet she obviously gave a great first impression and most of the fandom really dug her, despite the edict. I almost feel guility, as "yes, I should honor and respect Eastman and Laird's stance on the matter, but Mona Lisa has lots of potential, so why waste such a good character opportunity?"

There is a fanart of her on a blind date with a drunken Slash floating out there. I got to go find that.

Edit: Here it is:

http://tigerfog.deviantart.com/art/A...FAIL-132789077

And for fun, here is a piece of her fighting some Foot Soldiers:

gobo 04-05-2012 06:45 PM

Woulda been more amusing if she was Leo's love-interest... for some reason. :tshifty:

MikeandRaph87 04-05-2012 06:50 PM

I am in the camp of only four male turtles and that is it. Its just them. Never cared for seeing the turtles romance anyone either yet Mona Lisa just seemed to click with Raphael and was a genuinely likable character despite just being a one apperance character in one incanration and a toy and that is it. I like her as a salamander instead of the female turtle she could have been. While a salamander is close yet not a turtle it just works and can't explain it.

cryan 04-05-2012 07:38 PM

To a certain degree I am glad Eastman and Laird put thier foot down with Mona Lisa not being a female turtle. As one poster said, that is what made me order season 4 on DVD.Mona Lisa is in my mind a very memorable character.

oldmanwinters 04-05-2012 07:50 PM

I like to think that a budding love triangle between Raphael-Mona Lisa-Donatello threatened to break up the bond of the Turtles, thus Splinter forbade the boys from ever dating again.

And that would be the last we would ever see of Mona...

:tlol:

cryan 04-05-2012 08:02 PM

It surprises me that Mona Lisa didn't make into the Archie series.

It would have been better to have her in Ninjara's place. Just think if Mona learned a little marital arts beyond the basics she seemed to have down.

Agreed, she'd have made a great Mutanimal...I mean, there were exactly 0 female Mutanimals.

Probably the same reason Napoleon Bonafrog didn't join the Mutanimals, he opted to create two all new characters such as Jaguar and Dreadmon instead.

Why would Napoleon Bonafrog, a member of a group of 4 frogs, be singled out to join the Mutanimals?

Because the other 3 weren't as important or popular.

Are we going by the fact that Napoleon is the one Punk Frog that has the most appearances in the FW series? because if that's you're only proof of how much more popular he was, it's sorely lacking.

I agree here. I thought that perhaps Genhis being the leader was a little more exposed. He did have a figure just like Napoleon and while Napolen's figure was oddly not like the character in appearance Genhis's was. Genhis Frog also was in the Subterrean Sewer Hockey alonside Casey Jones and the turtles. If I had to guess it would be Genhis was more exposed and ppular by a little yet that is just individual speculation and I admit I liked Genhis a little more of them all. Still there is no evidence that one was more popular than the other. They were cool and I hope the Punk Frogs come back sometime.

Mona Lisa must be brave for liking Raph.

She was an interesting character and I liked her, I wonder why she never got a second appearance and yet other filler worthy characters did.

Yeah, kinda suspends belief, for instance, an arcade avatar like Tempestra, actually making episode appearance no. 2, before others.

sdp 04-05-2012 10:35 PM

ugh, tempestra was such a lame villain why not bring anyone else. Not to mention it made no sense for her to appear again, the TMNT had many other rogues they could've chosen.

CyberCubed 04-05-2012 10:56 PM

Tempestra was a popular villain. Also most hero mutants don't return.

We never saw Mutagen Man, or Muckman Joeeyeball get a second episode. Nor did we see the return of Wingnut and Screwloose.

How was Tempestra popular? because she showed up in a second episode? Really, Cubed your popularity radar is kinda faulty.

As for Muckman and Joe Eyeball, Winters and I like to think he went on to join the Toxic Crusaders... :P

Dirty Blond 04-05-2012 11:58 PM

Do you think if Mona Lisa had met 4Kids Raph, she may have gone for Mikey instead?

he'd certainly fit right in :)

gobo 04-06-2012 12:16 AM

I'm willing to bet Muckman was a hand-me-down from Toxic Crusaders.

CyberCubed 04-06-2012 12:51 AM

Tempestra was a very popular character. Wasn't she in 3 episodes? I know she was in Season 7's Night of the Rogues...was that her second or third episode?

gobo 04-06-2012 01:04 AM

Tempestra had only two. People always confuse Shreeka voiced by Eartha Kitt with her though.

Wingnut and Screwloose

Wingnut and Screwloose are not mutants, just from another planet than Earth.

Like gobo said, 2: Leonardo vs. Tempestra and Night of the Rogues. And when I think of popular characters I think of ones that if you asked some guy on the street who they are they might be able to say, "I remember that!"

cryan 04-06-2012 03:59 AM

I would have loved to see Mona Lisa in the 4kids art style. She would have looked amazing.I definitely really want to see a new take on her.

I don't often jump to Cubed's defense, but among both myself and a good long-time friend of mine who waited anxiously for the the DVDs sets to come out, that was the episode that both of us agreed we just had to own on DVD. I think it was the combination of the video game plot and the excellently animated special effects that really made us love "Leonardo vs. Tempestra."

I figure that if both of us found the episode so memorable, there were probably lots of other kids that did as well. It also aired during the CBS era of the 4th season, a time in which the Turtles were at the height of their popularity and just about every kid in America tuned in for those early CBS episodes. Thus, everybody would have at least had a good chance to have seen the Tempestra episode.

Her second appearance as a generic villain in "Night of the Rogues," however, was a disappointment that just didn't feel authentic.

Jester 04-06-2012 08:18 AM

Sadly I'm of the opposite persuasion, I liked Rogues better that Vs. Tempestra...maybe I never had a video game as a kid with a boss I just had to beat!

Yeah, I think it struck a nerve with some of those obsessive, young gamers such as myself.

The fact that "Leonardo who leads" who was the most dedicated gamer sorta made the whole hobby respectable, in my opinion.

I thought it was because Leonardo always wanted to be the best and not give up no matter the task. It did not not matter what it was and in this case it was a video game. While they all liked pizza,b-movies,and video games it was Michelangelo that liked those the most.

As for Tempestra she was a one off character that was used a second time to put a female in a group of villains. Putting General Tragg or Groundchuck and Dirtbag would have been better.

A bit off topic but, how popular were the Punk Frogs? They have always been my favorite ally.

I'd say moderately popular, given that Genghis and Napoleon Frogs were fairly popular toy sellers plus they appeared in several episodes as opposed to one or two, meaning that they got more exposure, along with being the first spin-off animated characters of the turtles, which happened to appear in the series itself. And they were not originally the turtles' allies, as they were first encountered by Shredder, and warmed their hearts after Splinter told everyone to stop and drop their weapons. By the time Leatherhead appeared, the punk frogs were clearly seen as good guys.

As for Mona Lisa, her episode continued to be reran through Season 6 since CBS still showed two episodes each Saturday through that season, though by the time her figure came out in 1993, it was starting to become more of a memory. However, the episode was a VHS classic, which also increased her exposure, and while a turtle and not a lizard, she is still the first female reptile introduced into the TMNT franchise.

MikeandRaph87 04-06-2012 08:42 AM

Zack had as many episodes as they did unfortunately and I don't think he is popular at least from what I have seen and being strongly disliked by myself. Though your other examples confirmed my thought. This group always had potential and heck when dire stacks are at hand can be a backup team.

I have story about that. Back in 2000 I was looking for any left over Ninja Turtles stuff that Toy R' Us had and a mom was doing the same for her son as Black Friday appraoched. She told me she was looking specifically for Raphael Meets His Match 2 episode tape on VHS. I told her I had a copy of it and I would sell it to her cheap considering it was used so we did it like an Ebay transaction and I used the $7 to go on Ebay in its infancy and bought an unopened copy of the same.

sdp 04-06-2012 09:17 AM

Ok, so Tempestra had 2 fans! I love videogames but her episode is just lame, she's a bad version of Viral which is already a terrible villain in the 2k3 show. There was no reason for her to exist or to appear again after the conclusion of the episode. If they really wanted a female villain in the group why not Shreeka or why didn't they bother to create a female villain before?

And were the Punk frogs popular? Their appearances seem random and we really never see the whole gang as a group after their second appearance do we? They were wasted potential, the first episode makes it seem like they are almost equals to the turtles which is hard to believe based on some quick training but after that episode it's like they forgot about that, not to mention their names were kind of wasted. After that when the punk frogs appeared it was only one or two of them. I never did like them but their appearances seemed random counting they really seemed forced into episodes.
