New Movie Postponed... Release date pushed to May 2014

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/56447

"The heroes on the half shell are getting put on the shelf indefinitely.

Paramount has pulled the plug on the Jonathan Liebesman-helmed reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, pushing its release back indefinitely... and, no, it's not for 3D post-conversion and/or more Channing Tatum.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Paramount, already gun shy with the delays the studio is facing with G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and WORLD WAR Z, is willing to take its time with NINJA TURTLES in order to iron out what it feels are script problems. Rather than rush it out there in order to make its December 2013 release date and potentially damage the future of the franchise with a poor showing, Paramount is learning their lesson of putting forth a subpar product that may come back to bite them in the ass later. Better late than never.

In the meantime, Platinum Dunes will have to chill with the reboot, and, once the script is ready to go, NINJA TURTLES will move forward again... but when that will be is right now anyone's guess."

Your Thoughts?

I got an email tip about this about an hour ago. Alas!

Slap-Happy 06-15-2012 03:01 PM

Someone should change the thread title. It's definitely still happening.

NINJA TURTLES PUSHED BACK TO MAY 2014

Another week, and another Paramount movie in trouble. First there was G.I. Joe 2‘s plot problems leading to reshoots and a release date delay. Then there was World War Z‘s problematic production and required reshoots and third act revision. Now it’s the Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles reboot. Paramount says it has pushed back the pic’s start date by 10 weeks in order to cut the budget $10M to $20M down to $125M. That means the release date also will push back: from Christmas 2013 to May 16, 2014. Initially, Paramount hired the Iron Man writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway for close to $1 million to revamp Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for a fast-tracked live action feature film to be released in summer 2012. At the time, the studio was looking at this as its next huge franchise like Transformers. Then the Jonathan Liebesman-directed live action-CGI combo’s release date was pushed to Christmas 2013. Now Paramount tells me it’s pushed again to May 16th, 2014 — presuming that the studio’s cost target is achieved.

So, mabey they were going to be aliens after all? or it could of been some thing else. (I doubt they were aliens in the first place.) What are your guy's thoughts on this.

Bob 06-15-2012 03:08 PM

The only problem is that May 2014 is already bursting at the seams with big releases, including the Planet of the Apes sequel, the Spider-Man sequel and an as-yes-unrevealed Marvel Studios film. Interesting that Deadline says the budget is 125 million. Another article over at the Hollywood Reporter describes the film as being "effects heavy". Really hoping it is just temporary.

Basically, Paramount have got problems. I don't think anyone can deny that.

Mr. Orange 06-15-2012 03:17 PM

Maybe Bay's name will detach itself from this by the time it comes back.

And the Nicktoon will decide if the world is ready for more TMNT right now.

Donnie 06-15-2012 03:17 PM

Next thing we hear the toys will be canceled. This sucks.

More changes to the script? W...T...F

Cure 06-15-2012 03:18 PM

Hm, oh well. As long as it makes for a good movie, I don't mind.

Darth Knuckles 06-15-2012 03:19 PM

After reading the thread I'm glad they still plan on releasing the movie. The thread title made me almost go bonkers! I guess I'm fine with it in that they want to make it as good as they feel it can be. We already love the characters that are going to be in this movie so the script is the most important thing. I guess I can wait a little longer....again as long as it's getting made.

Bob 06-15-2012 03:23 PM

Maybe this is for the better. I always said that the summer is better suited for this type of film. This way it can get the exposure of a real summer blockbuster. I’m just a little nervous, though, because after having looked at the release schedule for 2014, May 16th is the same release date as the unrevealed Marvel Studios film. Many people think it will either be Doctor Strange, Ant-Man or Black Panther. Could any of them beat out the Ninja Turtles?

In short, I don't think we should all cry just yet. This could work out well. :)

Hopefully Michael Bay will give an update on his website like before.

Spitfire 06-15-2012 03:24 PM

Great news. This gives me hope whatever script they're using may not be the final one.

ZariusTwo 06-15-2012 03:26 PM

Ironing out the script is good news, let's not make this an effects-driven brainless bit of action shlock, let's have a story with heart and purpose, something missing from every brand-based movie nowadays.

I’m starting to wonder whether it was all that hoo-hah the “aliens” thing created that’s had a part to play in this delay? Could be.

A little disappointing that there will be a longer wait but...

That was my thought when I saw the news. Its good they are taking notice of the backlash on the alien concept. The question of how much profit it would make as well with this backlash and with Turtlemania is in the past played into the script rewrite after TMNT without criticism got just $60 million. It all comes down to how much money can be made.

Yep. This will hopefully allow more time to flesh out a more decent product.

The Stryker 06-15-2012 03:53 PM

It's not because of the aliens thing. I can almost guarantee that. Studios don't give a f*ck about nerds complaining about things.

More script work? That's nothing but good. Shows they care about the project and want it to be worth watching.

Channing Tatum should totally play Raphael though.

Ravenxl7 06-15-2012 03:56 PM

My initial reaction was anger, but if they really are pushing it back to ensure the end product isn't a rushed piece of shell, than I'm ok with this. The Christmas release date seemed kinda weird anyways. I just hope that whenever they do release it allows it to shine.

May 2014 might not be the best time to release this movie, what with the multitude of other big name movies set for that month...If they stick with that, I'll see it on opening day, and wait at least a week before seeing any other big name movies. If the movie is actually enjoyable, which I hope it is, I'll probably see it multiple times too.

Bob 06-15-2012 04:06 PM

Providing Paramount stick to the May 2014 date (hope they will), I’m not really that bothered by this, thinking about it some more. Being from England, it was originally scheduled to come out in February 2014 over here anyway. So, for me, the delay is only three months. I bet US fans are pissed, though.

This is the release schedule for May 2014 (from boxofficemojo.com):

• The Amazing Spider-Man #2 (3D) (Sony) - 5/2
• Marvel Untitled 1 (BV) - 5/16 - *and now Ninja Turtles*
• Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Fox) - 5/23
• Pixels (Sony) - 5/23
• The Good Dinosaur (BV) - 5/30

Looking at it some more, June and July might actually be a better bet, because those two months are still virtually empty.

But they do care about making money. When there is almost unanimous hate surrounding a project, the profitibilty of it decreases.

Cipher 06-15-2012 04:25 PM

Thank goodness.

Drose18 06-15-2012 04:26 PM

Yes!!! I hope they rethink everything that is going to happen. It sounds pretty bad from what weve seen!

You mean the thing that we never got a rock solid confirmation on and didn't know how it actually would've played out in a movie at all?

CyberCubed 06-15-2012 05:04 PM

Looks like the alien backlash actually made a difference! I wonder if Michael Bay will leave the project.

Baxter Stockmen 06-15-2012 05:19 PM

I'm more optimistic about this project already.

BubblyShell22 06-15-2012 05:32 PM

I'm not upset about this at all. This is a good thing as they're fleshing out script problems. I'd rather have them delay it and come out with a good movie than release it now and deliver a horrible movie. I can wait.

TMNT is cooler than MOTU 06-15-2012 05:37 PM

Maybe they're trying to save money by axing some outer space plot points form the movie.

ThePickleweed 06-15-2012 05:58 PM

c'mon guys, this has nothing to do with aliens, and everything to do with battleship.

they just watched universal take it in the shorts releasing some hackneyed, effects laden IP. the last thing they want to do it is go down the same route. tmnt in effect, just got jon carter'd so to speak.

it'll probably get reworked with a lower budget now, and THAT is the script problem.

my 2 cents.

This. I'm all for anything that causes this creative team to take a step back and re-think whatever dumb decisions they were inevitably going to make (and presumably already had) regarding this film.

Bob 06-15-2012 06:34 PM

Of course, all the garbage movie news blogs are using the word "indefinite" to describe this move; even though the three movie websites that are 100% official (Variety, Deadline Hollywood, Hollywood Reporter) all report that this is simply a delay, and not an indefinite hold. This is from Variety's article on the matter:

Quote:

Paramount Pictures has shut down pre-production on its reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and moved its release date to May 16, 2014, the latest in a string of pics the studio has delayed in recent months.

Sources say "Turtles" was pushed because the filmmakers and studio felt they wouldn't be ready for the October shoot date. Paramount had no comment.

The shutdown is not indefinite and the plan is to work on the script over the next couple of weeks in order to beef up the material and bring the budget down slightly.

pannoni1 06-15-2012 06:39 PM

This will also ensure that the entire second season of the Nick Toon will air at this point before the movie's release, which is plenty of time for a new round of fans to join in for this project. All of a sudden, it seems like the sky is the limit once again, and I laughed when I saw that "what's next, will the toys be cancelled?" after seeing that some are already on eBay!

Bauer536 06-15-2012 06:46 PM

Whatever happens, it's safe to say we have the 1990 film. The update about the new movie being postponed has made me lost hope for a new film at all. It may take a few years before the turtles debut on the big screen. Let's just hope we get something some time.
