Mr.Turtle 07-11-2012 12:02 PM

is there any particular reason when choosing the guys eye colors?

seems no one ever asked this question yet hope im the 1st.

it seems that leo's dark blue eyes, mikey light blue, don red and raph green????

is there any saying abt these choices or just random and what would u choose for them if u design the turtles?

sdp 07-11-2012 03:41 PM

Give them another thing to set them apart?

In the 2007 movie it was mentioned that Mikey was given blue eyes since he was the youngest and most child like of the team.

KROW 07-11-2012 05:10 PM

Who gives a sh*t?

Ravenxl7 07-11-2012 10:55 PM

Don's are brown. I imagine they were given different eye colors to further differentiate them. As for any reason each was given a specific eye color... I honestly doubt there really is one.

Genesis 07-12-2012 02:20 AM

I think Leo should have gotten brown eyes, too. He looks weird with those blue eyes.

Mr.Turtle 07-12-2012 06:53 PM

i think not. if they just want to differ the guys, they'd have choose some colors more distinctive. but the color they choose for leo and mikey r pretty much close. and it has nothing to do with the color of their mask either....so i'm thinking perhaps there r some other reasons they chose those colors for them.

Allio 07-13-2012 02:33 PM

I do find it weird Ralph has green eyes... seeing his eyes, it feels different

Frozen_Cereal 07-13-2012 05:15 PM

I'm used to seeing the turtles with blank white eyes, so I'm not sure what to think of the new eyes. At least they look nice.

I do, but I'm not complaining because Donatello has brown eyes which is what I prefer. You can bet if he had blue eyes, I'd be complaining. Eye color clearly stands out and is one of the first things people notice on another, even if the said characters in question are in CG.

Indeed. I think maybe some images have them a tad redder, but they are definitely more consistently brown.

I agree, it seems almost lazy to give Leonardo blue eyes. His mask is already blue. Brown eyes would have behooved him much better. Same with Raphael, the green eyes look alien. Actually, if they wanted to change eye color so badly they should have just changed Mikey like in the 2007 film. The blue eyes denoting innocence and being the youngest is a lame excuse, but at least it's a reason nonetheless.

Mr.Turtle 07-14-2012 11:56 AM

u kidding? he got red eyes...not brown...

n personally, i think i d give leo red eyes coz deep inside he has a raph's part. he can turn into raph easily if he's not well self controlled.

i d give raph golden eyes simply because that golen eyes in asain mystery represent wild n aggressive personality. it fits raph's characteristic.

i d give mikey blue eyes coz its a color matching thing, u kno, orange and blue makes him look like the youngest bro.

n i d give donnie purple, somebody d say well it d be the same as his mask color but i think it d be alright only donnie got the same color coz purple really fits him. its a symbol of intelligence. with both mask n his eye color r purple, he d look double intelligence.

Wait... I thought purple was for royalty? :ohwell: I don't really mind the colors that much. Although there were a couple times I thought Don's eyes were red, but I'm pretty sure they're brown.

Indeed. The logic Mr.Turtle has drawn falls flat on its face, but this seems to be a recurrent theme. Meanings of colors differ between cultures and time periods of course, but there's no doubt throughout history that purple was the color of royalty, for it took a lot of work to extract the rich color (making it more expensive), starting with the ancient Phoenicians and their gleaning of "Tyrion" or "imperial" purple from sea snails almost 3,000 years ago.

Anyway, I digress. Don's eyes are undoubtedly brown, but there are, as stated, some instances where they seem more reddish.

Psychology of Color: Purple

What color were the robes of kings and queens? Yes, they were purple, our most royal color that is associated with wealth, prosperity, rich sophistication. This color stimulates the brain activity used in problem solving. However, when overused in a common setting it is associated with putting on airs and being artificial. Use purple most carefully to lend an air of mystery, wisdom, and respect. Young adolescent girls are most likely to select nearly all shades of purple as their favorite color.

So yeah. Purple can mean both royalty and intelligence (problem solving).

Mr.Turtle 07-14-2012 12:43 PM

it d be random if the purple was royalty. they give don's mask color for a reason. n don's eyes r red!!! anyone got a picture of them?

It can also mean: "oneness with God, divine wisdom, purpose, bliss, understanding and enlightenment...encourages spiritual connection, mastery, focus, and imagination. It is said to relieve constant worry. Purple is the color of gratitude and healing" according to this link.

However, I find all of these attributes, stemming from either a psychological or "new age" standpoint, rather inefficient in judging what a color actually means to each individual person, if it means anything at all. These statements are gleaned from clothing blogs and in Cure's case, a website giving advice on what colors to use in advertising. I'm not saying that purple can't represent intelligence or aid in problem solving, but I can't find any documented studies that have been done on the matter. It's pretty subjective, on the whole. On the other hand, there is no denying that history shows purple to be the color of nobility/royalty.

Whether or not Peter Laird researched any of this in picking Donatello's bandana color I do not know, although he's an intelligent guy...I would surmise he might have.

Justin Beiber? He owns colors now? On a serious (and related) note, do you have a source confirming that Eastman and/or Laird had reasons for giving each Turtle their specific color mask? It could have just been happenstance, as was the way it seems with TMNT in the first place. Maybe Peter just favored purple, and as he favored Donatello he gave him the color.

Thought it was the guys at playmates that made the color bandanna choices

Genesis 07-15-2012 05:05 AM

No, it actually was done at Laird's suggestion.

Source? Do you recall what he based it off of? Was it ever specifically said? I would guess that he would pick the color of at least his favorite Turtle, I'm just curious if he went by any aforementioned philosophy on color, or if he just liked purple.

Genesis 07-16-2012 01:57 AM

Oh, I don't know why each colour was chosen, but it was in an interview with one of the two, if I recall correctly. I wanna say it was Kevin Eastman in whose interview it was stated that Peter came up with the multi-coloured bandannas idea for the toys, but it's been quite a while, so I don't remember exactly.

Gotcha. Now I have a question to ask Pete on his next "Ask PL" blog. :)

He doesn't own the color purple. He's an enterprise whose sun will hopefully set in the near future, if it can't be an immediate demise.

Mr.Turtle 07-16-2012 02:29 PM

jeez so many ppl hate him... im not saying i like him but i dont care if he goes up or down... really, everybody knos he is just a symbol... n i dont care if he owns purple or not. in fact lots kids likes purple because his likes it...

Bossk 07-16-2012 03:59 PM

What does Justin Beiber have to do with the color purple? I love purple, as it's my favorite color and I don't really see a problem with it.

But if purple represents intelligence as said earlier, then it would make sense if Donnie's mask was purple, but on the other hand, the creators could have just liked the color for him, I have never heard anything about specific reasoning behind the colors.

Mr.Turtle 07-16-2012 04:16 PM

^ u dont kno that? that's his official color! everybody knos that... google Justin Beiber in image n will kno wut i mean.

Zog the Equalizer 07-16-2012 04:17 PM

I just assumed the eye colors were picked based on what went well the the colors of the bandanas, not that it was actually significant but I could be wrong.

Mr.Turtle 07-16-2012 04:18 PM

^ yea but blue eyes with blue bandanas? n brown with purple?

Zany Orange Dude 07-16-2012 04:19 PM

:ohwell: Well...Mikey's eyes are baby blue to symbolize his youthfullness if I'm correct.

Yeah. People seem to think it's cool to wish death on an innocent kid, but really it just makes them despicable human beings.

Mr.Turtle 07-16-2012 04:51 PM

well on some level, he is not that innocent... as i said he is just a symbol n ppl hate that symbol.

Brown and purple go nicely together. Blue on blue is a little much.

I didn't literally mean I hope he dies. I thought that was dreadfully obvious. Anyway, enough about Justin Beiber. You guys are just de-railing the thread.

Donnie 07-22-2012 11:17 PM

I asked PL on his blog whether or not he or Kevin assigned the Turtles all their respective colors. We suspected they may have, but the answer is indeed no, they didn't. From Pete:

Quote:

"2) Was there ever any significance in assigning each Turtle with a respective color? Did you just favor purple and therefore gave it to Donnie?"

My memory of the choosing of colors for the bandanas is that Playmates Toys suggested some colors, we liked them, and that was that. I don't think there was any particular reason for assigning each color to each Turtle, at least not consciously. -- PL
So, there was no logic behind it.

Mr.Turtle 07-22-2012 11:26 PM

^ i wish there was. brown n purple looks weird together. raph deserves gold eyes n leo with red eyes makes more sense.

Genesis 07-22-2012 11:27 PM

Hm. Go figure.

The question was referencing the choosing of bandana colors, I didn't ask him anything about eye color.

Mr.Turtle 07-23-2012 12:21 AM

^ why dont u ask him abt the eye color then?

wait. could it be based on the voices? or someone important in the studio? since the colors r pretty common irl.

Icegaze 07-23-2012 03:34 AM

In my opinion, Raph's green eyes are the best. I also like Mikey's blue. On the other hand, I'm not too fond of Leo's and Donnie's... Leo's blue clashes with his bandana and Donnie's brown is closer to red most of the time making it look weird. Both with dark brown eyes would have been better.
