All red masks baby!!!
Who else here wishes they'd release some TMNT animation (Or some media outside the comics) where the Turtles have all red masks like in the Mirage comics?
It just looks cooler. |

I guess merchandicing would be more difficult, but eh oh well heh |
Well they'd have to work out something for the action figures since, The weapons are like guaranteed to get lost.

Or they could *cringes* Put their initial on their belt... |
Belts are guaranteed to get lost too. Skin color would be good though. as would tattoos.

Great Idea! If the belts stay on then they really don't need the initials. The weapon compartments (Leo's scabbards, etc.), and the straps on Leo and Don.
|
That would be cool. Maybe make Mirage action figures, where they look exactally like the ones from the comics. Then they could include a little mini comic in the blister pack. but the new figs look pretty close, excluding the belts and the mask colors.
if they do that though, the figs should be really really flexable (like that one spiderman toy with a whole bunch of joints). |
Yeah, actually the originals were basically Mirage but with colored masks and initialed belts.
|
I'd love for Mirage to produce a gritty original comic style TMNT animated series for Adult Swim or the Sci-Fi Channel. They would definentilly all have red masks in that one.
But we can forget it as long as Mirage thinks that kids will like it. And they do... |
I could see that happening, actually.
|
That would be a dream, but since TMNT was popular as a children's franchice, Networs's probably don't want to risk it. Maybe if the Hallmark miniseries is a asuuccess...
|
Yeah, It does look awesome when they all wear the same color... It would actually, in my opinion be even better if they all wore blue... then of course the only way to tell them apart is there weapons.... which is definatly why they did that in the first place.
|
I really dont see the need for the red bandannas on them all. Granted, yes, they all had them in the original Mirage comics. But a good deal of those comics were in black and white from what I remember, at least everyone of them I ever owned. The red looked good yes, but for me, it really doesnt change anything. When I go into a fit about the idea of Mirage figures, I take some old figures and customize them with a little paint and elbow greese, ya know?
|
While I am certainly pro-Mirage, the first movie and the new series have shown me that mulit-colored masks are fine as long as the characters, tone, story, and action are done correctly.
I'd also love to see a super gritty Mirage style TMNT animated show, but the FoxBox version (and the first movie) is doing a pretty damn good job of telling the more serious aspects of the Mirage storyline, but still having fun with it. |
Yeah, the color of the Bandanas isn't really that big deal. And I agree, New cartoon has the same formula that made first TMNT movie such a big success. It has succesfully combained deep characters and good story telling from Mirage, while adding humour. It worked in 1990, and does work very well now to.
|
Agreed, but still. Since I was a kid I've been wanting to see a fully animated all-red-mask TMNT. Perhaps an animated movie of city at war. Or maybe when they do the "Return to NY" episodes they could have the Turtles dawn special dark red "Dueling masks" for the battle with Shredder. That would make for an awesome ending to a Battle preparation montage!
|
I think the colors were added because in fast action it would be hard to recognize who is who. But it would be cool to see.
|
I Gotta admit the the muti colored masked do look kind of corny. The problem with the Red masks is you can't tell them apart besides there weapons. I think a good way to do it would be skin color.
Leonardo - Light Green Donatello - Oliver Raphael - Dark Green Michelangelo - Teal With the skin color they don't have to wear there masks all the time to know who they are. |

I figured Kali would.

* Weapons * Skin colors * Voices So it isn't that important to have different mask colors... |
In the few Mirage comics I've read I couldn't tell the Turltes apart sometimes. Of course, it's in black and white, so the mask colors didn't matter anyways. I guess skin color could always be the way to go. On a side note, does anyone know what started the trand of different colored Turtle skin? I've always known the toys being usually colored like this:
Raphael: normal Green/Light Green Leonardo: "Olive" Green Michaelangelo: "Forest" Green Donatello: Brownish-Green I do have the Genesis game where you have the option to color them in Anime or Comic style with Comic style being the multi-colored version. Personally, I think either or is fine, I'm just curious as to where this trend started. |
Yeah there are times when you can't tell them apart. You need some dialogue to recognize them.
|
Shh... you'll get the fangirls all excited.

even though, they changed it a lil' bit for the knew cartoon. Mikey usually was known to have the darkest skin, but now Raph does... if you see what I mean. |
Heh.. yeah. Raph's the dark green one, and Leo's the lighter green now.
|
If they employed different skin colors, different shell colors and, different shell patterns. And, if they bothered to make sure that Leo has two thin straps on his belt, Don has one thick strap on his belt, Raph has metal "sai holders" on his belt and occasionally doesn't wear his mask. Then, different mask colors would be just plain redundant!
Also, the action figures can include their tattoos and the new cartoon could've had them each wear a small ribbon of their signature color somewhere on their belt. I'll draw some fan art like this and you'll see what I mean. |

Didn't Raph and Mike switch skin tones in the new series? |
Ok Here it is:
http://www.geocities.com/tetsudeinon...edMaskBaby.jpg I'm willing to bet that with all the variations used in this pic you can easily tell which one is which even with all the masks being red. Also, here is what the shells look like: http://www.geocities.com/tetsudeinonychus/ShellZ.jpg With all the variations in the first pic plus these shells, plus Raph occasionally not wearing his mask, plus mike occasionally wearing shades, plus their tattoos maybe being added later, there is really no need for the multi-colored masks. :) If these links don't work then delete ".jpg" from the address bar and hit "Go" |
Cool pic! The shoulder straps definitly help us tell Don and Leo apart from the group, but Mike and Raph have always been the trickiest. You really need to go by their facial expressions there.
|
And Raph's metal sai holders.
|
I'm rather partial to the natural colored green that all the TMNT were in the original coloring of Mirage Volume 1 Issue 1. They all have red (brownish red acutally) but you can still tell them apart by characteristics.
I think that the different colored skins with the red masks don't look quite right. Nice designs though. Different shells would indicate that they are actually different species of turtles. Which would be interesting, but not as traditional as I would like. |
That wouldn't make them any less brothers. Splinter's not even a Turtle and He's their loving father-figure.
|
tattoos arnt the turtles' style... they wouldnt do it
as far as straps: Leo- double -X- straps Don- suspender type -I I- straps Raph- single slant -/- strap Mike- none |
They have Tattoos in recent issues of the Mirage comics.
|
Raphael would not need a strap.
