TMNT Side Scrollers
I loved (and still do) the wave of TMNT side scrollers from back in the day. It all started with the TMNT arcade game which is still a classic.
I still have TMNT II: The Arcade Game and TMNT III: The Manhattan Project for NES. Man these games really do hold up to the test of time. I'm psyched to see that the new game will also be a side scroller. From the screenshots I've seen it looks like it might have a similar feel to the orignal arcade classics. |
I don't bother with the Nes Conversion of Arcade game anymore, Original is so much better. I play Manhattan project tough.

My favorite though, is Hyperstone Heist for the genesis... and they really do stand the test of time, I mean if we can still talk about them and play them in the 2000s, that's got to say something for high quality programming |
Or there is the possibility that we are TMNT fans ;)
|
I think Karpo speaks the truth on this topic!

Yeah but I also know non-TMNT fans that still play the games, especially Turtles in Time and Hyperstone Heist. So if they can play them with out being fan boys such as ourselves, just proves mah point |

Forgive me for asking this stupid question, but how good was Hyperstone Heist? :-? That's the one TMNT game I never got to play.

It was similar in many ways to Turtles in Time, but it had different levels, different bosses, including Tatsu from the movie. If you want to play it and have a semi good computer, PM me and I can hook you up. |
I've yet to pick up the Hyperstone Heist ( I want it soooo bad), but I do have the rom and have completed the game once or twice. The roms of the arcades are off the chain! I love them so much I wish they were on a new console GCN and Xbox are screaming for such great gameplay and nostalgia. 4 player TMNT is one of the greatest multiplayer experiences known to man.
I own all but 2 of the TMNT console games. NES: - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - TMNT II: The Arcade Game - TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (rare) - TMNT: Tournament Fighters (incredibly rare, many people don't even know it exists) SNES: - TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (IMO the best TMNT game ever!) - TMNT: Tournament Fighters (I just picked it up finally) Gameboy: - TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan (I really like this one for some reason, simplicty I guess) - TMNT II: Return to the Sewers - TMNT III: The Radical Rescue (incredibly rare, and the last TMNT game from the original series) I've yet to get both The Hyperstone Heist and Tournament Fighters for the Genesis. I hope to get them in the near future, but they are both quite rare so I have no idea when I'll be able to get them. I found THH once for 9.99 but I didn't have any money at the time :( I've yet to find Tournament Fighters, but it goes for 7.99 at GameStop so I should be able to get it eventually. If all else fails there is always ebay. |

The beauty of the old games is that it threw in just about any TMNT character from any universe and it still was fun. In TMNT III you had Rahzar hanging out in the Technodrome. I think their were some Fugitoids running around there too. Worked for me.
|
At least they looked like Fugitoid.
TMNT 4 alone had some of coolest characters in the TMNT universe. Metal Head, Baxter the Fly, Rat King, The Pizza MonstersSlash, The Rock Soldiers, Bebop and Rocksteady (dress like pirates), Tokka and Razor, Leatherhead, 2 versions of Krang, and regualar and Super Shredder. Through out the other games you were able to fight Ground Chuck, Dirt Bag, Baxter (not as a fly), Tatsu, and many more. Not too mention all the foot soldiers (varieties of them) and mousers scattered everywhere. Truely enjoyable beat 'em up goodness. |
Hey, I know it's ot of subject but, have any of you guys ever played "TMNT: The Manhattan Missions"?
|
NES games
As for the NES trilogy, I think 2 is the best. In a way, I like it better than the Arcade version, because the two extra levels, particularly the Ninja Dojo with the white tigers, are sweet.
I just wish they let you fight Bebop and Rocksteady simultaneously instead of Backster as a Fly. Oh well. As for the 3, I never could figure out a good pattern and rhthym against most of the bosses. It's like for most, you are forced to use your special move, which I have trouble executing and it takes off a bar of your health. Or maybe I just didn't practice enough. The only one I could finish consistently is 2. I beat the original once, after many, many years. And I beat the third, but I had to use cheat codes. I never tried Hyperstone Heist or the second and third Game Boy installments. I'll have to change that someday... :) |
I've played manhatten missions using an emulator. I had no ideas what the controls were so i never got far. As for the NES versions, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original TMNT 1. What's everyones opinions on it? I absolutely love the game. Being able to switch between all 4 turtles was good idea. Too bad its not used in the other games.
|
TMNT 1
After you die in 3, you can switch turtles.
I think 1 is a good game, just a little too hard for my tastes. I would never have finished it if I didn't stock up on scrolls in area 3. I had at least 60 for each turtle. Those porcupines in area 5 and those guys with the jetpacks and lazers in area 6 give me a bad case of shell shock. :dead: |

So what's the "CLASSIC TMNT GAME"? Was it on an Arcade Machine?
|
Yes. There are two aracde games, TMNT and TMNT 2: turtles in time.

And I think the NES had more consistent control. Awhile ago, I played the arcade versions via rom and emulator, and I noticed the turtles are rather floaty when they execute their jump kicks, plus they actually seem to fly up a bit after executing a kick in mid-air. On the NES, the jump kicks are swift, and move in a downward diagonal fashion. Much better. But about gameplay, one thing I like better about the arcade version is you can stand in front of an enemy, except bosses, and keep mashing the attack button until you beat him. On the NES, enemies seem to be programmed to counter attack immediately after being hit. That means you have to resort to either hit and run tactics, which can be a pain when the enemies become faster and more aggressive in later stages, or you have to constantly use the weapon swipe, which seems much easier to pull off on the NES anyway. And on the arcade, I did find a good rhythm for Krang. Stand off center, and keep rapidly executing jump kicks. On the NES, I think he's much harder because of the aforementioned auto-counter attack. |
Yes, you die easily in acade game it's much harder. I take 10 lives everytime and won't take more on the way. On nes they exactly one animation for hit and one for the jump strike. Aracde version can be harder to control at start, it has 3 diffrent moves you can do while mid air, but once you get the hang of it its much more rewarding. Also normal attacks are pretty much useless against enemies, like you said they always counter and it makes combo moves impossible. You are forced to use the jump kick.
It isn't a bad game for NES, but inferior to the original. TMNT 3: manhattan missions is much better IMO, original game not a port. |
Wait now... unless it's called Manhattan Missions somewhere then I'm pretty sure that TMNT III is called The Manhattan Project (I own it and that's what it says on the cart and on the start screen). Manhattan Missions was a PC game (a rather difficult one with TERRIBLE controls).
I love the original arcade game. It is much better than the NES game, but the NES game is still fantastic and fun to play. The only thing I don't like about the game is that the ending is worthless. Just a screen full of text about how Shredder will come back from Dimension X. The game sure if fun to play though. Stone Ill the "CLASSIC TMNT" game is the original arcade game. It was the first oddly enough. TMNT 1 for the NES was the first console and PC game, and TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan was the first Gameboy game. |
Yeah it's manhattan project... What a mistake, I mixd it ip with the PC game.
|
Mixing up a fantastic game with an awful one (at least the controls were) is just unholy.
|
lol
|
I usually can't get the jump kick to connect against foot soldiers. Usually, they punch me clear across the screen.
One thing I do like about TMNT 3 NES is the fact you can toss foot soldiers onto each other. Plus the toss move kills them in one hit anyway. And if I remember right, they don't counter attack as often. |
yeah TMNT 3 looks same as 2 on NES but is actually quite diffrent.
|
Wasn't there a arcade version of the TMNT game with the extra levels and Baxter the fly boss?
|
Not that im awere of. And baxter changin into fly made no sense in the NES game, but the game isn't about story so it doesn't matter much.
|
It made no sense in the NES version? I guess that Shredder changed him into one. Did it make sense in the cartoon? The NES version's longer so it's better. Plus The Arcade version looks to cartoony. I like the simple look of the NES version.
|
No it didn't make any sense, His flying machine blew up and in the next picture he is a fly. In the cartoon Krang's machine turned him to a fly and he he wanted vengeance.
|
Did it make any more sense having Bebop and Rocksteady come back to life after getting killed?
|
You got a point there!
|
When the heck did that happen?!
|
I gues he means when they fall and vanish. They certainly aren't running away..
|
Ohh, right. I thought you meant on the show. Boy am I slow?
|
Well the pint is that the story doesn't play very important part in TMNT games. Of course the 2003 games seem to change that.
