Playmates Missed Figure Oppritunities

So, with discussion turned to Baxter's race, something kinda dawned on me: How awesome would a Mutatin' Baxter have been? I mean, we only got Fly Baxter, and not the human version. Playmates could have made another Mutatin' figure of him, and that would have been awesome.

Aside from that little sudden realization, what other characters did Playmates miss an opportunity to make as figures? I know a Red Sky series with those characters is one of the biggest failings of the original line, but what about the colossal lack of >> and Back to the Sewer figures. I'd have also killed for more Archie based figures, then again who aside from Ray Fillet was an Archie only character to get a plastic counterpart?

Cowabunga Carl 09-14-2012 10:25 PM

The figure I always wanted as a kid was a background character that appeared twice in the show. It was another member of the gang that Bebop and Rocksteady came from. He was a bat mutant and showed up in the background once, and then the other time demutated by the ray that could reverse mutation.

Jester 09-14-2012 10:29 PM

Who was that guy? I remember him for those things, I wish he'd have been around more. Him and the other "punks."

This guy?

Cowabunga Carl 09-14-2012 10:35 PM

yup that is the one. I've been searching for a picture because I knew some people wouldn't remember. I always wondered what happened to them after Shredder mutated Bebop and Rocksteady.

The bat guy that wore the "Cyclops" visor, yeah he looked like a neat possibility. I think that there were TONS of missed opportunities back then. The fact that the Archie comic had original characters coming out of the woodwork back then and the characters from the cartoons that were never produced.
The remaining members of the Mutanimals that didn't get figures, the Gang of Four that ended up killing off the Mutanimals, the 2 remaining mutant frogs, Sarnath would have been AWESOME... there are so many missed characters.
I did like the original creations from the playmates line back then though, and I kinda wished that they'd introduce some of those characters in the other TMNT media back then.

Cowabunga Carl 09-14-2012 10:43 PM

Armaggon is another that I'd have loved to see. I never actually got to that part of Archie but I remember seeing pictures and thinking he was amazing. There are a lot of possibilities with Archie. Here is to hoping that maybe the classic line takes off and they make more "fan figures".

Powder 09-15-2012 01:36 AM

Considering how often we saw the mobsters Big Louie & Don Turtelli it's a shame we didn't get toys of them.

Mr._Mutant_Man 09-15-2012 07:17 AM

That bat guy would have been awesome. I don't get why he didn't show up in more episodes.

Some figures of the Turtles in wrestling costumes from the Archie comics would have been cool. I would have totally bought an all black Raphael.

I've wanted a set of Stump Wrestling TMNT ever since I first read that arc. I don't go in for variations of main characters and all that crap, but I'd make an exception for those.

pannoni1 09-15-2012 10:47 AM

This of course has been discussed many times before, especially with the Red Sky characters (Dregg, Hi-Tech, etc.). But there are others that haven't been mentioned. I'm surprised that there were plans for a Giant April and not a Giant Shredder, since that would have sold better. Kurma from the Turtleoids episodes, Fripp from Camera Bugged/Welcome Back Polarisoids, Pizza Monsters that actually mutated by opening a meatball to reveal a red pizza monster since Case of the Killer Pizzas was a VHS classic, REX-1, and even having a button to press on the Turtle Van to make the cannons fire, much like how Pizzas fire from the Pizza Thrower. As nice as the original line was, it could have been quite a bit better.

I wanted Mutatin' Baxter, Leatherhead, and Slash at the very least.

The Name of the Mutant Bat was Scrag check out his origin here:
http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/Scrag

It would have been great to make the entire Bebop and Rocksteady gang into figures.
Also a Dimension X playset with a free Rock Soldier figure included

TMNTChris1980 09-15-2012 12:30 PM

I would've loved a Granitor figure http://tmnt.wikia.com/wiki/Granitor_...7_TV_series%29 I loved all the Dimension X characters, like General Traag.

Another kind of weird toy that would been fun would be the boss from the "Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang" http://scottmoviereviews.blogspot.co...episode-6.html

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 04:12 PM

I would have loved a crooked ninja turtle gan set of figures.

MST3KFan 09-15-2012 04:49 PM

How about Bugman? Surprised he was never made as he popped up in a few episodes. Could have made a regular figure for him or even a Mutatin' one since he changed back and forth often.

Wes 09-15-2012 05:08 PM

I'm with Ninjinister -- mutatin' Leatherhead would have been siiiiiiiiick. And probably pretty easy to pull off, too!

How could I forget LH and Slash!

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 05:54 PM

You know it is surprising we didn't get a mutating Slash as we got a mutating Tokka. It would have been as simple as swapping the head on that figure I would think. That is really a missed opportunity. Though does he have much of a following outside of the hard core TMNT fans?

Leatherhead is another one that I would never have thought about. Though his would have been a lot harder depending on which version we are talking about. I'm guessing we are talking about the OT one, which case the best, pants, and hat would have made it very tricky.

Jester 09-15-2012 06:02 PM

What I never understood was the Tokka role playing set, that was clearly Slash, but never released as such.

Drose18 09-15-2012 06:04 PM

Beserko woulda been nice...

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 06:10 PM

I did not know of this Tokka roleplaying set.I must look into this.

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 06:52 PM

Did they ever make a Tatsu figure?

Jester 09-15-2012 06:54 PM

Nope...or a true movie Casey.

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 07:15 PM

such missed opportunities. I'd have loved a full movie line of figures.

Powder 09-15-2012 09:31 PM

That SLASH roleplaying set is pretty damn cool. I would have loved that as a kid.

Cowabunga Carl 09-15-2012 09:35 PM

It made me start thinking of maybe doing Slash instead of Jack Harkness for halloween.

CyberCubed 09-15-2012 11:56 PM

Not making a Lord Dregg toy when he was the main villain for 2 seasons is absolutely mind blowing.

I also would have loved toys of Lotus Blossom, Tempestra, Shreeka, Berserko and Big Louie.

Cowabunga Carl 09-16-2012 12:25 AM

I agree with the Lotus Blossom and Lord Dregg, the others not to sure about.

Like has been said before I'm surprised we didn't see the Stump Wrestling Turtles. I don't know if I would have got them as a kid but I'd love to have them now. Maybe in another wave of the Classic's if they ever come to light.

I'd love to have seen Hallocat and his gang. That was one thing that Playmates did right. I loved all the the mutant figures. Not so much in the comics, but as a kid loved the toys.

Drose18 09-16-2012 08:20 AM

Lotus blossom?
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_SS500_.jpg
Just buy a five dollar mitsu and there you go!
Big louie?
http://a3.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/i...b7377ecf/l.jpg
This thing is called timebandits frankie.

Also, I always liked the story in the foot soldiers are revolting and think it would be easy to make an Alpha 1 because they just needed a new headsculpt on a foot body and there you go!
And i would die for a complete carnage!!!

I Crave Pizza No More 09-16-2012 08:58 AM

I always thought we should have had a set of turtles dressed in black ninja suits. I also wanted regular (not the clunky Mutatin' versions) of Rocksteady and Bebop in human form. Same for Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Saki.

SwordofTengu 09-23-2012 12:48 PM

So many missed opportunities

They could have done:

Ch'rell
Cyber Shredder
Tengu Shredder
Lord Dregg
Baxter Stockman as a human (Old Toon and 2k3 Toon)
Dr. Chaplin
Carter

Chris 09-23-2012 04:08 PM

In the original line Archie characters really stand out as the glaring omissions. Ninjara and Armaggon especially, plus I'd have loved a set of Future TMNT. Movie Star Shredder is another (I'd say April, Casey and Tatsu as well but there could have been likeness rights at play there)

From 2K3 - Ninja Tribunal and BTTS figures are the obvious ones.

The biggest thing missing are Mirage based figures, but not holding my breath for those anytime soon.

Candy Kappa 09-23-2012 04:22 PM

In the 2k3 line, they should have released Purple Dragons for Hun to command. Think there was a Prototype of Johnny the thug leader that Ch'rell offed.

miru 09-27-2012 05:36 PM

There should have been a second set of toon turtles, which should have had:

* Hamato Yoshi
* Lotus Blossom
* Human Baxter
* Big Louie
* Don Turtelli
* Shreeka
* Tempestra
* Berzerko

And a third which would have

* Carter
* Lord Dregg

And also a comic series with Ninjara. She should have been the only Archie one in plastic not Ray Fillet!

Bill 09-30-2012 01:13 PM

Channel 6 building playset! with accurate Toon Burne included.

poprob 09-30-2012 02:41 PM

Utrom shredder!

miru 10-30-2012 10:54 PM

Ninjara, of course! Also Alopex.
