The Worst/Most Annoying Things About the TMNT Fanbase

What do you guys think? What aspects of our fandom rub you the wrong way?

For me it's 2 fold:
1. The "fans" who were only really on board the franchise as kids and have "moved on" but feel the need to come behind the new stuff Nick is doing and saying, "This isn't the Turtles. CG sucks! This is gay!" So mainly anyone who posts comments on Youtube saying they're a "Huge TMNT Fan"...

and the second is kinda like it...

2. Fans of one part of the franchise at the detriment of all others. I can understand not liking a particular aspect of the franchise, but to speak nothing but bile about how boring all the Mirage books are, or how un-grim/dark all other iterations are when compared to Mirage (and Image). We get it, the Mirage books aren't your preference, no need to bludgeon us to death with it.

Cowabunga Carl 09-19-2012 10:29 PM

I'd have to agree with you on point one a 100%. People who haven't been following the franchise or even realize where it came from past the OT making comments about this new version annoy me. I don't even bother looking at the comments on the youtube videos anymore.

Like you said the second kind of goes with the first and I agree with you there. I mean there are aspects of TMNT I'm not a huge fan of. However I'm not going to focus on it and continually bash it because of that. Not everything about this property is going to appeal to me all the time. Heck even sometimes the stuff I like isn't going to be liked by others. I get that. But for the love of all that is holy do people need to go on about?

But what really bothers me is when people start talking about the Turtles and mention that they are a children's franchise and are made for kids. I hate hearing that from tons of people. It is clear they have never actually looked at TMNT and where it came from. Their whole view is based off of the toys and cartoon. It drives me freaking nuts.

CyberCubed 09-19-2012 11:05 PM

The "nostalgic" part of the fandom is the same problem with ANY fandom that goes on for a long period of time....the Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc. fandoms are just as bad when it comes to, "only liking the early seasons," and thinking everything else sucked.

For TMNT, its mostly the original cartoon, even though I bet all those people stopped watching halfway into Season 4 and never even revisited it when the DVDs came out.

Jester 09-19-2012 11:32 PM

People who buy something TMNT and then come ask us the value so they can resell it for assumed massive profits.

Zulithe 09-19-2012 11:40 PM

It's true, for a lot of people out there, anything that does not fit their idea of what TMNT should be will be panned simply for being different. This is mostly true for people who grew up with the original toon and the first movie.

I am one of those people, but I don't share those extreme views. I have my favorites, but I don't outright dislike any iteration... well, okay, next mutation is kinda hard to appreciate at times. But I mostly just overlook it, not bash it.

Actually, I seem to notice a lot of 'oldschool' fans taking an intense liking to the new Nick show and toys. I predict it will be a big hit and win over most people. The ones that keep their minds open, anyway.

I only want what's best for the fandom. Why do you think I'm trying to get the 4kids series re-released on DVD? I am also sure at least SOME of my e-mails, along with many others, is what got Lionsgate to include the two skipped episodes on the Season 10 disc.

Also besides Next Mutation, I really do enjoy virtually every TMNT universe. I loved the cartoons and the comics, and the Nick show looks great.

At least he contributes things other than poor attempts at humor.

& this is why this thread was doomed from the start.

Archon_Turtle 09-20-2012 12:51 AM

Oh man. This isn't going to last long.

^ This part, I don't doubt. It doesn't make you less annoying though.

Do I really need to shine a searchlight on my contributions to the fandom for you to acknowledge them?

Jester 09-20-2012 06:10 AM

Spitfire 09-20-2012 06:59 AM

The only thing that annoys me are the members who seem to only be here to troll people. That and fans who have to constantly attack others opinions.

ZariusTwo 09-20-2012 07:01 AM

I don't think people know what "trolling" even means anymore, they just use it describe any aggresive comment that happens to upset them, even if those comments contain facts or truthful obervations on people's ignorance.

It's pretty much this for me. People who when talking about TMNT sound as if they're a huge authority on the propertyor are the biggest fans, but don't know much about the franchise past the OT, first 2 movies, and most of the original Playmates toys (I may or may not be referring to most of the people on the What the Shell and Turtle Power podcasts).

It's fine if you're a big fan of one facet of the franchise and that's all you're interested in, but don't pretend to be some sort of uber-fan who has some sort of say on the franchise as a whole.

I don't even consider them fans. You watched a cartoon for about 2 years and played with some toys and now you can't even remember the names? You're not a fan, you're an anus.

This is it in a nutshell for me. It's so easy to spot them too. I won't mention names and they know who they are anyway since they're constantly mentioned on these boards.

Cowabunga Carl 09-20-2012 10:53 AM

As much as people want to point fingers at people it goes both ways. There are members here who could be a little nicer about pointing some stuff out to the newer members, but it is also up to the newer members to read the rules and follow them. I'm not excusing what either side has done, just saying the blade has two sides so watch how it cuts.

Don't worry Sage we are all somewhat guilty one way or another..;)

Jephael 09-20-2012 03:40 PM

I just get tired of all the arguments and mudslinging that take place.

gobo 09-20-2012 04:35 PM

When I hear about people in foam TMNT costumes, that seriously peeves me. When I was at SDCC09 (probably my only Con ever), I went to the TMNT25 panel. At the end, when the the costumed characters came out and this room full of nothing but adults went ape****, I nearly died of embarassment. :sweatdro: Even as a kid, execs taking the action-oriented pilot miniseries and dumbing it down for the preschool crowd ticked me off. I guess that'll never change.

zkarlette 09-20-2012 05:20 PM

Well at least you got to see them. I was there too and I didn't see them ,I would have probably gone ape **** too. I love going to Cons and the effort people put in making some of those amazing costumes. That's the hole point of going to a Con,you are allowed of enjoying that type of thing without judgement.:)

Dirty Blond 09-20-2012 05:35 PM

Anyone who elevates their fandom to scholarship. For example, all those ______ and Philosophy books sort of annoy me (The Simpsons and Philosophy, The Daily Show and Philosophy).

I do however appreciate thoughtfulness regarding the TMNT, and this board is a great example of that, but the bottom line is that it is all merely entertainment for the sake of it.

9.95 09-20-2012 06:35 PM

I hate when people pass you off as 'not a fan' because you don't have a huge toy collection or are comming back to the turtles as an adult. Life gets hard and sometimes things we love fall by the wayside.

Let it be known that Jester brought this upon us all.

Cowabunga Carl 09-20-2012 08:01 PM

As has been stated before and I'm going to try and say it again as nicely as I can figure how, it isn't about people coming to the franchise, or not having having collections, or even knowing everything about the franchise. It is when people start acting like they know everything about the franchise while not having exposure to it or actually having experienced facits of it trying to put off that they are better then or know more then others. Stating things as fact when often times they are opinion.

That is probably my biggest pet peeve is people posting or talking as if they are the authority and know without a reason of doubt what is going on. Everyone here is entitled to have an opinion, heck I love reading what others think. People just need to stop acting like they are the authority or end all to end all.

cowabungaparty 09-20-2012 08:09 PM

dudes can we all just get along haha to quote raph ''let go of my arm leo ''

TMNTChris1980 09-20-2012 08:33 PM

I agree people shouldn't state stuff as facts unless they know. But hey, maybe people have asked people who are a part of the TMNT the same question, and they know the answer. Maybe I'm getting defensive because I posted an answer to a question, and I'm new to these boards, whatev (yeah haha, I said whatev).

Here's the problem I think everyone has (no matter what you're a fan of). You wear a t-shirt, someone comes up to you and starts the "I'm a huge fan of _____" conversation. Then after about a minute of conversation you realize, they were just trying to be nice or cool with you, damned if I know. This used to bother me, but then I realized that those people help you realize how big a fan you are.

In other words, "poseurs"... I couldn't agree more. Insincerity is lame.

Casuals. I don't care how "elitist" that is. I can't stand them.

Good thing pitchforks were on sale today..

Jester 09-20-2012 10:24 PM

I have no problems with people who some would call "casuals" as long as they don't act like they have all the answers. I know I knew next to nothing outside a nostalgic love of the FW series and the Playmates figures of that era when I signed up here, and I've learned a great deal because of this forum. So as long as a person with a casual enjoyment of the Turtles doesn't act like that means they know every facet of the franchise, they're welcome here. I mean, how else are you gonna "move up the food chain" unless you start with a basic knowledge of the franchise.

Cowabunga Carl 09-20-2012 10:27 PM

Jester just summed everything up. Close the tread now.

hitmonkey 09-20-2012 11:06 PM

For me it's all the fighting about which version is better. Truth is, there's not a "better" version. Some people prefer Mirage, some people prefer 2K3, and a good majority prefer Fred Wolf. None is better than any other, they're just different. At the end of the day, we're all TMNT fans.

Jester 09-20-2012 11:23 PM

Jester likes this!

If it weren't for some of these we wouldn't have others. Mirage begat Fred Wolf, Fred Wolf begat Archie, both series together begat the movie universe (most notably the 1st movie.) The success of the franchise as a whole lead to Image, Next Mutation, the 4Kids series (which again took cues from primarily both the FW series and the original Mirage books). If one of the early iterations had failed, we wouldn't be looking at the new stuff from Nick and IDW.

MoreCowbell5263 09-21-2012 12:15 AM

The thing about the whole "people who think they know everything about it" is that that's the easiest way to bother fans of something. Trolls will do it intentionally, like "confuse" Star Wars with Star Trek when talking to a SW-fan or Trekkie. Others have no idea how little they know.

I'll admit I know little of the comics, but I'm not going to criticize them. I grew up with the campy Fred Wolf cartoon, but grew to love the darker done of the first movie. And when I finally gave the 03 cartoon a chance (didn't give it a chance back then because I grew up with the campy toon), I actually liked it.

You gotta be open-minded about other interpretations. I was also iffy about Batman: Brave and the Bold until friends told me I should look at it as a fun alternative, rather than another attempt at the quintessential Batman cartoon.

BubblyShell22 09-21-2012 08:00 AM

Yes, I agree about the people who bash the other incarnations and act like the one they like is "better" than the others. All of them are different, and even though I wasn't fond of Next Mutation or the Fast Forward and BTTS series, I don't think of any incarnation as "better" than another. I grew up with the FW toon and came back for the 4Kids toon. Both of them are good in my book and have different tones to them (one's a fun loving and comedic toon while the other is a darker interpretation). People need to have an open mind and stop bashing every incarnation they don't like.
