Is the new TMNT game only 2 Players or 4-5 Players?

We already know it's for all 3 next-gen consoles, but I don't know yet... and I figured I could get a quick answer from here..
Is the new TMNT game only 2 Players or 4-5 Players?
I gotta know.

Raph 05-24-2003 06:04 AM

It will probably be 2 players...

Just look at the screenshots, 5 is not possible anyway :D

Karpo_007 05-24-2003 06:36 AM

Yeah it will be 2 players.

Nturtle 05-24-2003 10:17 AM

Yeah, 2 players but you can call out all four turtles to do combo attacks

Tokka-B 05-24-2003 11:49 AM

I wonder if both players can pick the same turtle?

Nturtle 05-24-2003 03:07 PM

Maybe in the fighting game mode, but I doubt it for story mode

5 players? That's not even possible at this point.

The Stryker 05-24-2003 06:43 PM

well for the PS2 with the multitap but still theres only 4 turtles

Tokka-B 05-24-2003 07:29 PM

Also many games have options that allow you to hook up game systems to add more players...but yes, unless you can play as other characters there are only 4 turtles...but we all know that, don't we?

Stone Ill 05-24-2003 08:40 PM

You can have 8 players in NHL '99!

Mr. Snackpants 05-24-2003 09:11 PM

he was probably thinking of casey jones as the 5th

*taps you on the head* no quite ripe yet  just kidding Tokka, just kidding!

Its 2 player from what the sites who were at E3 said. I woulden't mind doing some LAN option and have Splinter and Casey be 5th and 6th characters.

Oxnard Hamster 05-24-2003 09:44 PM

home versions

You know, I was a bit disappointed when I found out the NES TMNT 2 and 3 games were 2 player, but I realized that may be due to the limitations of the cart and system.
You'd think with all the technological upgrades, they could easily make it 4 player, but I'm still going to buy the GC and GBA versions if they're different, which I hear they are.
Is there a home version of TMNT that is 4 player? I know the SNES arcade port is only 2 player. I think the Genesis has a game, Hyperstone Heist or something, that plays like the arcade games. Is it 2 or 4 player?
I guess if you want 4 player, the only thing to do is buy an arcade cabinet.

Kid Icarus 05-24-2003 10:13 PM

oxnard, NES only had 2 controller ports. they system would have pry blown up with 4 players...

and the reason its only 2 player is because its being developed on the PS2, which from a technical standpoint is the weakest console... that means GC and X-box are going to take a hit. It also means, since PS2 only has 2 controller ports, GC and X-box are stuck with two players.

But weren't the NES Four Score and Satellite out by the time the NES TMNTs were made? Maybe not for 2, but I'm pretty sure they were out by the time 3 rolled around.

Tokka-B 05-24-2003 11:36 PM

What the hell has been up with you lately trunks?! Is that DBZ crap getting to your head?

Anyway, Oxnard has a point, for people who dont know the NES and it's several components... **glares at gwg** they did have fourscore and satellite.

Oxnard Hamster 05-24-2003 11:56 PM

Well like I said, I'm not 100% sure the 4 player adaptors were out before TMNT 2 and 3. I want to say no for 2, and yes for 3, but I'm not sure.
I'm horrible when it comes to remembering dates and years for some reason.
Anyway, there are 4 player games for the NES: Gauntlet 2, Super Off Road, Nintendo World Cup, Spot, Nightmare on Elm Street, and a few others.
But besides Nintendo World Cup, none of those games compare in terms of quality to TMNT 2 and 3. The graphics, sound, control, and gameplay are inferior IMO. So I guess because TMNT 2 and 3 pushed the NES to it's limits anyway, a 4 player option would be out of the question. I know in some later NES games, when the screen becomes too crowded, the game suffers from serious slowdown and graphical glitches. I assume the same would be true of TMNT 2 and 3.
But I'm by no means an expert on the technical aspects of games. What little I do know, I've picked up from others over years of posting and reading messages on various boards.

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 03:44 AM

The number of players isn't probably only 2 because of techincal limitations. It's a 3d game, how could you succesfully make the camera work if all 4 players are far away from each other?

Jephael 05-25-2003 07:10 AM

They could probably do a multi-split-screen effect like they did for Mario Kart 64.

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 07:36 AM

Yes split screen would work, but it wouldn't look as good.

Tokka-B 05-25-2003 09:01 AM

Yea split screen possibly, but it's not the best choice. Nowadays the Gamecube can support a lot of people on the same screen at a time, I don't have a number, but since it is 128 bit it should be at least 8...

All they'd have to do is zoom in and out. They should allow you to connect systems together to play with all four if you can't do it with one. Man, that really bites. I was hoping it would be four players. WHY WON'T THEY JUST GIVE ME MY FOUR TURTLES?!

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 10:03 AM

The zoom would be a problem, if area is large everything would be very small. Now connecting two consloes would be the best choice.

Jephael 05-25-2003 10:12 AM

Hey I'd be lucky if I get one friend to come over to play it with me. The last time I ever played video games with anyone was around 1999.

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 10:15 AM

I have many that would be intrested, I to was hoping for a 4 player game, but I understand why they made it 2 player.

Good point. I guess they could do it like Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy and make it sort of an overhead game, although that wouldn't fit the turtles style.
As for zooming in and out, I think that's a good point. When I play Super Smash Bros. Melee, I can't see what I'm doing when the screen zooms out. Then again, I have poor vision anyway.

Tokka-B 05-25-2003 01:34 PM

You think that's hard? Try playing fixed camera mode.

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 01:35 PM

Well I usually don't have problems with SSBM but it's a 2d game, so it's cant really be compared With 3d it would be even harder.

Tokka-B 05-25-2003 01:43 PM

Yea, I rarely have problems either for SSBM.

But Nintendo is known to be good with the cameras, so if they had a later release date they could make it much better probably.

Karpo_007 05-25-2003 01:51 PM

Not sure about that... Camera in New Zelda can be a real pain.

Tokka-B 05-25-2003 07:53 PM

Hmm, I didn't get that game yet....the camera stick doesn't work right or something?

Everyone knows theres 4 turtles!
It dosnt even make since to make it only 2.

the most i've heard about is 16 player controller characters at a time, but thats with a LAN, so it dosen't really count.

I think split screen would make the game get confusing at times though.

 i haven't watched an episode of DBZ for like... nearly a year . I'll be nice now :).

Another reason why they diden't do 4 players might be that most casual gamers, who are the core audiance now ( ), don't have the multi-taps for PS2. As PS2 is the dominant system, their going to make the game appeal to as many people on there as possible, then try to work in the other systems.

Bomberman was 4 player as well I believe (and Bomerman 2) and there were some 4 player sports games as well (football at least).

Yes TMNT 2 and 3 certainly at least seemed like they were pushing the hardware to the limits. The sprites vanish every now and then (not completely though). None the less I think they could have pulled off four player. TMNT 4 on the SNES surely could have had a four player option though.

PS2 isn't the reason that the new TMNT isn't four player believe it or not. Apparently the designers of the game thought that the new TMNT wouldn't use four player as effectly as the old series did. Instead they are trying to make each character much more individual and I hear the story mode might be different for each turtle (I assume however 1st player is). At least they can do all four turtle combo moves.

Spectre 01-09-2004 09:50 PM

Only 2. :(

They really shouldv'e had up to 4 players. It would be pretty fun.

PizzaPower 01-10-2004 08:57 AM

ya it should have been 4 players, but maybe they wil have these feature in the new game if it comes out.

Hey guys, this thread is a few months old and we generally don't bring back old threads here so I am going to lock it.
