http://www.amazon.com/Teenage-Mutant...ref=pd_sim_b_1 Judging by the credits, I assume this will include TMNT Vol. 1 #32-34. |
It's sad to see so many Volume 1 stories skipped.

Another nice Dooney cover. McWeeney is far from my favs though.

They're collecting Volume 1 in order, (excluding the issues in the Ultimate Collections, which are getting single color releases anyway), but some stories are skipped due to rights issues.

The reason #18 has yet to be collected has nothing to do with rights issues (as it was recently collected in Eastman's 25th ann. TMNT book). As for issues with guest character appearances, I know in #41, Matt Howarth's Those Annoying Post Bros. appear, and Michael Dooney's Fluffy Brockleton appears in one panel of #47. |
I believe there's an issue with reprinting Veitch's work, but other than that I think everything else is fair game.
So far the skipped list is; Vol. 1 #18 - The Shell of the Dragon Vol. 1 #24-26 - The River Parts 1-3 Vol. 1 #30 - Sky Highway Vol. 1 #31 - Souls Winter I can understand why they skipped 18 from the Ultimate collections, but no idea why it's not be included in the Classics collections. I thought they'd put it with 32 but looking at Vol. 4 that doesn't seem to be the case, so it's officially MIA. 24-26 and 30 are all Veitch, so no go at the moment, hope they can sort out a way to release them in the future. 31 is the start of Zulli's Soul trilogy so I'm expecting that will be collected in Classics Vol. 5 with 35+36, so I'm not willing to say it's definitely been skipped just yet... |
This is why I'd rather shop online for the original issues that were published and released by Mirage back in the day. With these collected re-releases we only get to see certain stories.

For certain? I don't. Like John I'm assuming this is 32-34 based on the credits. I'd love it to be 18, 32-34 but the Classics have been 3 issues at most so far, and 32-34 makes more sense than 18, 33-34.
|
For casual TMNT fans this is becoming really confusing, there's way too many things IDW is printing and i've completely lost track over what I really need to get. All I really want is consistency.

Also simply just by looking at the Adventures collections everyone knows that's the Archie series and a totally seperate thing. Then there's IDW's TPB's of the current new series, again, made obvious just by looking at it. |

- Teenage mutant ninja turtles (IDW ongoing series) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles: Secret history of the Foot clan (a new micro-series of the ongoing comics) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles vol. .. (Trades collecting 4 issues of the ongoing series) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles Ultimate collection (Books reprinting the original b/w series) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles Classics (Trades collecting colored version of issues not included in the Ultimate collection) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles Color Classics (Trades reprinting colored single issues of the original b/w series) - Teenage mutant ninja turtles Adventures (Trades reprinting the Archie' series) - Tales of the Teenage mutant ninja turtles (Trades reprinting the original "Tales of.." series, coming in November) Actually, it is something NOT so easy to follow! And, well, not considering that almost all these are getting two or more variant covers! |
I saw this today for Classics Vol. 5:

I'm guessing that they're saving Zulli's stuff for their own book, whether it's part of the Classics line or not.
I hope they include the the Ring short story from Turtle Soup (vol. 2) #1, as its a prelude to #37. |
Can't believe they're skipping Zulli's arc! Hopefully he'll get his own collection later (same for Veitch's stuff).
But the move to 4 issues is good. Maybe there is some hope for 18 in Vol. 4 after all... |

I personally can understand all those that lose overview with these different IDW publications/reprints. I personally would "simply" wish for a phonebook version of Volume 1's main storyline arcs (you know, the Peter Laird & Eastman stories).. |
That Zulli collection is very rare. Besides, if "that already exists" meant anything we wouldn't have any of these new books, dude.

But now that you are writing that I checked prizes in amazon and my mouth is still open. Still, I want my phonebook edition with all the "relevant" canon stories. Souls Winter is a great interpretation of the TMNT universe, but somehow one of its own kind. |
Sad that these are still an issue with Rick Veitch's TMNT issues. Ain't IDW gonna at least ask him or give some royalty payment? I mean they did this with Dave Sim. I believe they gave him $500 and whatever books of his choosing from their IDW HC reprint books. I believe that was what was given to him from that video of his on youtube. I think he gets paid the $500 as well whenever TMNT #8/ULT. TMNT Book 2 goes to another printing. I can understand Rick Veitch's need for creator rights compensation. Its probably why he didn't sign off the rights to his stuff for Mirage. But "the River" was collected in the old TMNT Collected book 6 TPB of the early 1990's. Yet that was an exception? Or do we assume he was paid again in some way or it was so recent it wasn't a big deal for them to be printed again? But he does seem to want compensation. His material in Rob Liefeld's Supreme TPB's (that were done by another company Checker Books Pub) were licensed out if I'm correct. He still expected compensation and was upset about it too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checker...blishing_Group Artist Rick Veitch was quite clear in his opinion of Checker's Supreme: The Return—upon receiving a complimentary copy (as one of the artists who drew flashback sequences), he wrote: While I'm happy this material is seeing print, I have many of the same problems with this volume that I had on the previous one, Supreme: The Story of the Year. For starts, the reproduction of the interior art is horrendous.[28] He mitigated his criticism, by pointing out that Thompson and Checker were working from "poor jpegs... so I [Veitch] know what he [Thompson] was up against and I'm sure he did the best he could, but the final product looks muddy, dark and just plain lousy."[28] Veitch also criticises Checker's decision to devote the blurb on both Supreme volumes to Rob Liefeld: ...as if he actually had much of anything to do with the work inside the book. [Liefeld]'s contribution was as publisher (one who was often late with payments) cover artist and inker of about three pages worth of figures... In perpetuating the illusion that [he] was creatively involved in SUPREME to any great degree, CHECKER slights the efforts of GIL KANE, JIM STARLIN, IAN CHURCHILL and myself who actually drew full stories for the book.[28] Veitch also notes that "the book's biggest failing is that the final issue of the story was never produced", and notes archly that Checker's tome "takes care of that little problem by ignoring it completely and just tacking "The End" on the last story". In summary Veitch concludes that the "volumes are sloppy, to say the least, but unless you want to hunt down the back issues, they are the only game in town". In addition, he notes that "[t]here are no royalties being paid to the creators for either of the SUPREME reprint volumes." So if a book is under licence from another publisher are they still suppose to pay the creators? Their not the publisher/makers of the original material. This is the same thing for IDW to Dave Sim right? They chose to ask and compensate him. Which I'm sure it was necessary as he can't let Paramount/Nicko get away with it. Cerebus must be the exception in that Mirage-Paramount deal. But I'm thinking that Checker is the middle guy just as IDW is and shouldn't really have any obligation to pay the talent well after the fact as their only the licencor of the stuff. Does anyone know about the publishing industry towards the creators and talent what the obligation are for royalty/reprint payments? You can understand Veitch's thinking too. But then sometimes I can't wrap my head around this bit either hampering his TMNT issues to ever see the light of day again. Like whats he ever gonna do with it? |

It pains me to see that IDW can release awful trilogies like this yet, "The River," "Sky Highway" and "Shell of the Dragon" remain skipped.

Incidentally, Tom McWeeney has completely changed his style of art since he did "Spaced Out". He now draws in a "faux manga" style; he did a couple Avatar, the Last Airbender comics for Nickelodeon Magazine. |

Wait, the Amazon listing for Vol. 5 credits McCollum and Anderson along with Hedden and McWeeney.
Is this going to include #37 alongside "Spaced Out"? What a bizarre pairing/instant-buy either way. I didn't mind "Spaced Out." |
All the crap is bundled together in one package.
I still want to know why #18 was skipped. |

If they are including #37, I hope they include "The Ring" short since it's kind of an important preface to the issue. |
Here we go again. TMNT #18 and now the Zulli stuff is skipped and of course we know about the Veitch situation. Its just the way IDW is reprinting the Mirage run makes you wonder why they are even bothering with these trades? Issues being skipped and certain runs most of us don't even care about (personally wouldn't adhere as a good image of TMNT comics). I know they want to do all of Vol.1 but I can't help wonder we'd be better off not reprinting certain runs either. And I do think it can be confusing to the average comic reader that IDW has all these trades of various TMNT material across the board. They might be milking themselves to death of TMNT books. I mean the cautious comic stores aren't going to ever order all these trades. They can only get so much from online bookstores sales. Its like how #1 issues have the most orders then the drop of attrition on the following issues. Well these TMNT trades maybe the same if not worser when the stores look at their order guides and then say: "another TMNT trade"? It may get to the point they won't order them anymore. Just my two cents. Still what bugged me on these first of these "classics" trades was book 1. It had some shorts from shell shock and then shows the books cover. But that doesn't even represent the entire content all the shorts or the original trade. Will they reprint all the other shorts somewhere else and then show Shell Shocks cover again? Its mind boggling. The only trades I'm interested in are the Tales of TMNT (still irked about a two trades for this) stuff just for color. But I'll admit the way IDW is doing these is a turn off to me.

I'm sure the Soul's Winter trilogy is being collected, no reason that would be skipped.

EDIT: If you choose the Look Inside option on Amazon's page for Classics vol. 4, it now includes #32-33 and 37, plus "The Ring" short as a prelude to #37. Nice. Also, it would only take about three more volumes to finish the original Mirage series. |
Another 2 should do it. All that's left is 41-47 (plus the skipped issues but I'm not holding my breath for those anytime soon - if we're lucky the Zulli issues will get a stand alone collection and 18 might make it into one of the last volumes to make it 4 issues each, or maybe into one of The Works collections)
|
I don't know if this has been pointed out yet, but Vol 6 is on Amazon.
