Disclaimer in Tales trades

Did this thing come out back in December? Did anyone buy it? I haven't heard anyone say anything about it.

What do those 4 Tales issues look like in color? And did they keep the old Frontipieces or the new ones from the 2007 collection?

rufus 01-06-2013 07:22 PM

This one?
http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Teenage-...es+of+the+tmnt
If so Coloring looked good IMO.

HugeBadWolf 01-07-2013 03:07 AM

Yep, I bought it.
Liked the stories better than the softback Classics collections, never saw the original versions so don't know whether the frontpieces are new or old, but the colours seem to fit.

Can't work out why IDW felt they had to put a disclaimer at the front about the comics being 80's reprints and there fore representing 80's attitudes though...

Cheers,
Doug

Whoah, wha?

I hadn't heard about that. So IDW found something in those first 4 issues to be culturally insensitive and slapped a disclaimer on the cover?

That's... strange. Maybe it was issue #3 that they thought might offend some cultures?

Usually those sorts of "this is racist and we're very sorry" disclaimers are reserved for WWII propaganda and stuff.

Yep, just tucked on the credits page, will try and get a scan/pic later

Was looking forward to being offended but ended up disapointed :lol

That's the one, thanks for putting that up, mate. Saved me a job :)

I'm offended by the disclaimer.

As am I, thinking back over the issues I can't think of anything that could be misinterpreted. I am alright with them saying they were intended for Mature audiences, since most of the new Turtle Fans are children and after the Jason Biggs fiasco I understand Nick and Viacom wanting to insure that people know they aren't creatively responsible for more mature stories.

The values thing though that definitely rubs me the wrong way. Is it that Casey intends to Spray Paint the factory?

Spengs what in Issue 2 could be construed as culturally insensitive?

liugeaux 01-07-2013 10:11 AM

Well, vandalism is a crime and Casey is a good guy. Technically that sends the wrong message and as a company that caters exclusively to children (Nick), its better to cover their backs than to not publish the work or alter it.

Meant issue 3, my bad. Some sensitive soul somewhere might take a slight at the King of Thieves having an ethnic manservent named Hadji, but that's just grasping at straws. I really can't see anything being culturally insensitive in these issues. Maybe the disclaimer is regarding the violence? But then, the Ultimate collections don't have such disclaimers and they're far bloodier.

oldmanwinters 01-07-2013 10:36 AM

Haha, that's great! Even early seasons of Sesame Street on DVD have disclaimers on them. Our culture is so sensitive these days...

When Jester and I were preparing for our Fan Commentary on "All Hallows Thieves," he actually looked up the translation of some of the King's incantations in the issue. I seem to remember him saying there were some things that could have been considered controversial for cultural-religious sensibilities.

CyberCubed 01-07-2013 11:27 AM

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I wonder if Bobby knows anything about this. I know he said the trades aren't his department, but I'm awfully curious.

Thanks for clarifying... I was racking my brain trying to think what might offend in that issue. All I could come up with is that it paints Springfield Massachusetts as a wretched hive of scum and villany, but having been there many a time, I felt it was a fairly accurate depictions.

My guess regarding the disclaimers is that the Ultimate Collections were released before Turtlemania 3.1 began so they were aimed at more of the adult collector at the time. Plus being in colour and with that bright friendly cover it would definitely be something that might catch a younger readers eyes.

I'm not sure how much I'm at liberty to say, but pretty much all of you guys in the last four or five posts are barking up the right tree. Those were all concerns.

Hm, the popularity of the cartoon with kids is now making Nick worried that these 7-8 year olds will be picking up mature comics?

I hope this doesn't cause Nick to tell IDW to tone down the stories for younger readers.

I doubt it, Cyber. IDW is clearly listing the age ratings on their comics. The "Tales" trade had "Recommended for 13 and up" clearly on it. The monthly comic is also listed for Teens. There's nothing to worry about.

The difference is back in 2011 and for early 2012 the IDW comic and trades were the only new TMNT stuff coming out, so they didn't have to worry about younger kids discovering them.

But now that the Nick cartoon started a whole bunch of kids are coming to the franchise for the first time. They may see some of the Turtle trades on book shelves and think they're the same as the show. You know how many parents stupidly buy their kids violent videogames, its the same deal here.

Hardshell 01-07-2013 05:24 PM

Again, the books are clearly labelled. You would have to be pretty hard-pressed to not notice the clear labels IDW is putting on these collections. A fair amount of trades have come out from IDW since the August 2012 or so, and so far I haven't seen any reports of any mistaken purchases. If they are mistakenly picked up, the parents only have themselves to blame.

Okay, here it is:

what language should I be looking up?

Bobby Curnow 01-07-2013 09:38 PM

You guys don't remember Pee Wee's playhouse?

Indeed, it certainly reflected the values of the 1980s. :tlol: :tcool:

Ninjinister 01-07-2013 09:58 PM

Yeah, I found Pee-Wee Herman pretty offensive, too.

He ruined a perfectly pleasant evening at the movie theater for me, once.

But yeah, somehow that didn't come to mind when reading the text. Guess I was more used to hearing the catchphrase than reading it.

So I guess the translation I read online was accurate...?

Well, whatever the case, it makes for a funny bit of trivia to add to the Turtle Tips section of my Tales #3 review.

I don't have to, who can forget Pee Wee's Playhouse or Jambi the Genie?

...Are people offended by Jambi the Genie? If so...

I missed the text on the inside as well, but did notice the blurb on the outseide stated the book was "intended for mature audiences."

Disclaimer in Tales Vol. 2 trade

Anyone else catch this disclaimer in the beginning of the Tales of the TMNT vol. 2 trade?

"These reprints of 1980's era comics were intended for mature audiences, and do not reflect today's values or those of Nickelodeon or IDW Publishing. Except for the addition of color, the comics are presented here as originally published."

Maybe I'll see something when I re-read these stories, but you'd think there was something horribly offensive in the comics with a warning like that. It says on the cover, "ages 13 and up recommended." I'd think that was all the warning they'd need.

CyberCubed 05-26-2013 05:31 PM

It's because kids watching the Nick show may pick up the comics thinking they're the same.

Powder 05-26-2013 05:55 PM

There's been some stuff that kinda knocks religion a little or has slight sexual innuendo. They're just putting that there to cover their asses from ignorant anal parents.

gobo 05-26-2013 06:50 PM

Isn't the mere existence of TMNT a knock to religion though? And, it's not like they had a Dimension X sea creature mating with a submarine. That would just be wrong. :twink:

CyberCubed 05-26-2013 07:27 PM

Splinter meditating and reincarnation can be touchy subjects for Christian parents, look at the way they wrote in to the old Archie issues in the 90's.

What's your point? The current IDW books have reincarnation in them too.

Because Christian parents with kids who watch the Nick cartoon are starting to see these comics on store shelves. They complained in the 90's so they're going to continue to complain now.

oldmanwinters 05-27-2013 10:44 AM

We had a thread on this subject for the previous release.
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=40705

I think it was the particular incantations invoked in the "All Hallows Thieves" story that really prompted the disclaimer and I guess they decided to run it again for good measure.
