TMNT: City Fall

Oh man, I got on the computer at the right time! Haven't finished reading this, so why don't you all join me. New regular artist Santoloucco (as I had hoped!) and story arc where apparently Shredder successfully turns Leo! The title Cityfall obviously inspired by City At War, but I definitely like the idea of the turtles having to actually go against Leo.

I am still reading. Looks promissing!

Spoiler:
HUN!

Whoa! Just finished. 2013 is going to be amazing!

Matches Malone 02-14-2013 02:25 PM

Subservient mutants? I'm thinking Bebop & Rocksteady...

And that RI cover is so good!

snake 02-14-2013 02:26 PM

I cant wait for this! This is going to be AWSOME!

DrSpengler 02-14-2013 02:33 PM

While it's a bummer to know Ben Bates will be leaving us so soon... SANTOLOUCO! DOOOOOOD!

CyberCubed 02-14-2013 02:34 PM

Lol @ Bobby name dropping Mondo Gecko as a mutant they don't have any plans to use. Poor Mondo will be trapped in the 80's like the stereotype he was. :)

Andrew NDB 02-14-2013 02:36 PM

Sounds good on paper but they've got an uphill battle at making the IDW Shredder a credible threat at this point.

Master Splinter 02-14-2013 02:36 PM

I just started reading this too and came here to see if it's posted yet. Good to see someone beat me too it. This is exciting stuff!

I hope they have a very strong and believable reason for leo turning... because that is totally out of character... I don't care if splinter slapped him in the face and told him to GTFO I could never imagine him doing this.

anyway the whole channeling of 'city at war' is really cool

It's true. The line the "villains never lose" actually made me a little skeptical. I know what Bobby means by it, but if that is really true, in some ways that lessens the dramatic tension, as we know that there isn't really anything at stake, since we know that the turtles can never lose either, because then they would have to change the name of the series! Still, even if it turns out that way, the best I can hope for are some entertaining stories, even if it doesn't take it all the way. However, if IDW were to finally take something to the point of finality, it sounds like it would be in this series! Plus, The Shredder successfully taking over New York would definitely give him some credibility. I don't think this is the same Shredder who got ambushed and embarrassed in #12.

Hmm... about issue #12. That's where the first seeds of Cityfall were planted, actually. Page 12, Shredder had an epiphany. And, then, on page 19, in an instant, his epiphany became a plan.

All I'm gonna say about that.

Thanks, everyone, for your continued support and interest! Cityfall is gonna be lots of fun! But, in the meantime, issues #19 and #20 are still coming your way and, friends, what Ben Bates and Ronda Pattison do in those two issues will knock your socks off! Before you dive into Cityfall... don't miss the grand finale of the Krang War!

That's honestly been bugging the piss out of me for a long time now. I hate to gripe prematurely, but I just can't see Leo turning that quickly for any reason, and if I understood Bobby correctly, he goes over to the Foot in the first issue of Cityfall. I know they've been "leading up to it" with his shaken confidence over Slash, but it's not clicking for me yet.

Now if he's joining the Foot as a mole, I'd love that. I've eaten up Aqulad's storyline in Young Justice: Invasion and almost sh*t my pants after watching "Depths". But I just don't know... I'm definitely anxious to see what happens though.

Anyways, cool article. Very nice of Bobby to not correct him about "The Hun" lol, but it's cool that Hun is showing up. I honestly hadn't suspected him since these Purple Dragon's are total chumps. I hope they go Mirage with it and have him fresh out of prison and ready to eff **** up.

Very happy to hear about Santolouco taking art duties, he'll be perfect for this just as Bates is for "Krang War". Speaking of that arc, I'm already excited for Krang's eventual return, since it looks like the turtles and NRF totally wreck him. He's gonna be pissed once he gets back on his feet.

This cover is nuts!

Can't tell if that's Ronda's work or not... but I kinda hope that Vieira from Foot Clan takes over. No offense to her of course.

Is that Usagi on the cover?!

Do you mean in the yellow panel reading "City"? I'm pretty sure that's just Splinter.

ToTheNines 02-14-2013 03:21 PM

I guess he looks a tad different from the way he's drawn in Secret of the Foot, but yeah, that's totally Splinter.

Bobby Curnow 02-14-2013 03:24 PM

That article is filled with typos. It was a phone conversation, and I said i'd be happy to fix the typos when I read the transcript, but they said they would do it. :ohwell:

CyberCubed 02-14-2013 03:26 PM

Leo falling for the dark side does seem odd even with this being a new universe and all. I hope the writing is strong enough to make it work.

DC and Marvel do this with a lot of their characters and fans cry foul until it gets fixed. Hopefully whatever happens here is done well.

Bobby Curnow 02-14-2013 03:42 PM

Re: Leo. The fact that it would be "out of character" is 100% correct.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about that aspect. You won't think twice about it when it's executed. I'm pretty confident about that. Very tempted to just tell it here, but that's no fun.

Thanks Tom, for the input! One of the best things IDW is doing for TMNT is having such a huge vision for them and always looking behind, as well as ahead, to make the best story possible. On the other side of that, I also appreciate how well you take constructive (some less so than others) criticism, since it would probably drive a normal person crazy! Regardless of my concerns, I am really happy with IDW TMNT right now.

Chris 02-14-2013 03:52 PM

That's really reassuring, thanks Bobby :tgrin:

Leo is my fav so I'm a bit sad to see him "going to the dark side", but as long as it's well done and the pay off is good (who doesn't love a good redemption story, plus, when it does come, it'll make the final battle with the Shredder even more personal for him) then I'm more than happy to be taken along for the ride.

I noticed in the interview you called this the halfway point of a bigger story. Are you guys really planned out to almost issue 60?! That's awesome! It's nice to know things are being planned out that well and you have a real plan for how things are going to go rather than just making it up on the fly/lurching from event to event as other companies tend to do.

HotJuicyBurgers 02-14-2013 04:00 PM

So does anyone know if mateus's work is all digital or if he does "traditional" art. Would love to own a page of his stuff

Martin 02-14-2013 04:15 PM

Good lord, I just geekgasmed all over the keyboard. SUPER excited :)

I was already happy when I read that Santolouco was the new regular (awesome artist; only thing I don't dig are Mikey and Donnie's faces, they look kind of weird but that might just be their bandanas). But when I kept going and read all the other stuff... wow, just wow. I can totally see this working soooo well! Can't wait till may :D

CyberCubed 02-14-2013 04:17 PM

Would it be too early to ask if IDW is already planning out year 3?

Sounds like IDW could very well have the basic ideas down for the first 50 issues or so of this ongoing.

Not unreasonable. I'm positive Tom and company would at least have the broad strokes for the next 3 or 4 story arcs with some other story arcs "up in the air" as far as when they could happen/where they could go... and given that each story arc is averaging about 6 or 7 issues anyway, yeah, "basic ideas down for the first 50 issues or so" is to be expected.

That is if the series lasts for 50 issues, I really hope it does though

ToTheNines 02-14-2013 04:30 PM

It's consistently in IDW's top 3 best sellers. It'll be around for a long time considering we've got a movie coming up.

strugler 02-14-2013 04:43 PM

SO EXCITED!!!!

MAteus Santalouco YESSSS! the dude is awesome

Thank you IDW!

Anyone think idw might adapt the movie into the comics,

We're going to see Raphael at his most angry and impulsive. We'll see Donatello struggling for a logical response to all this. And Michelangelo is going to be super bummed and depressed because his family and his happy-go-lucky lifestyle is endangered.
Sounds like the IDW Turtles will briefly reflect their original Mirage counterparts! :D

The interview makes me wonder who the Turtles will look at to lead: Don, being the most logical, or will Raph take a familiar cue and try to take over the reigns?

One character aspect I would *love* to see develop out of this is Michelangelo take to writing as a means to vent his inner frustrations, whether it be in a journal or on a blog; Michelangelo is often times cast aside as the "dumb, goofy kid" of the Turtles, yet those of us who have followed the Turtles throughout the comics know Michelangelo holds much more depth than mainstream pop culture allows him.

On another note, I'm curious to see how sales will be for the upcoming issues, as Santolouco taking over art duties on the ongoing will finally see the Turtles being the most "mainstream" they've ever been in comics and having a book where the inside looks like the cover.

A Leo heel turn. Wow.

Powder 02-14-2013 05:57 PM

An article full of good news! I'm excited for all of this (though not so much the idea of Bebop & Rocksteady being shoved into what is essentially going to be IDW's City At War).

frank_one 02-14-2013 06:03 PM

Great news! I'm glad to see Santolouco as the new artist (Bates was doing well too), I only hope he has changed his mind about those weird superhero bandanas we've seen in the Foot clan mini-series.

Triceraton Jones 02-14-2013 07:51 PM

This is the best bit of news I've heard all week. I am absolutely loving IDW's TMNT more and more. Its been so long since I've been excited for a comic and I don't think I've ever got more and more excited as a series has gone on. Thank you IDW, sincerely.

***First of Two Latin Kings*** 02-14-2013 07:56 PM

Sounds like an Adele song, "CityFall..."

Cipher 02-14-2013 08:19 PM

While any similarity to "City at War" sounds like it will be in name only, I'm very excited for this. Sounds like the kind of shot in the arm the IDW series could use, and they're definitely far enough in for a big shake-up.

Also, Shredder employing more as-of-yet-unrevealed mutants? They couldn't tease Bebop and Rocksteady harder if they mentioned horns and tusks.

Not just in name, that article/interview with Bobby pretty much stated/cited other similarities other than "city" being in the name.

CyberCubed 02-14-2013 08:38 PM

Didn't the TMNT Annual already kind of do this? It had the Foot, Savate, the police, the Turtles and Purple Dragons all caught up in a huge fight.

Yeah, but they were fighting over jewels, not power over the city. I have no idea how to rationalize Leo joining up with Shredder, despite Bobby asking us to trust him (no offense, Bobby).

But that was mainly just one really hectic incident. Cityfall sounds like it will be the calculated execution of many thought out plans.
