Mikey & Raph - Stronger brotherhood bond than with the others?

In the Pulverizer episode, the part where Mikey helped out Raph is a very interesting one for me. When Raph was poisoned, Mikey came to his aid immediately, not caring about the bloody battle between Leo and Fishface. It was Mikey's sole priority that Raph was taken care of.

http://s3.postimage.org/5jy20e7oz/raph.jpg

Back in New Girl In Town, it was Mikey who was knocked unconscious instead. Similarly, Raph didn't care about the dangerous battle between Don and Snakeweed; he was mainly focused only on Mikey.

http://s11.postimage.org/djslvac1f/t...ridoo2_500.png

Both Mikey and Raph were absolutely restless when the other went down. I reckon they were a bit selfish for not caring much about Leo/Don during those perilous time, but maybe they have more confidence in them on fending off the enemy? That's debatable. :tsmile:

Arguably, the bonds they have together is much stronger than compared with their other brothers; Leo and Don. I do appreciate that bond, though I do wonder how/why it happened. Does their flaws (one being hot tempered and the other ADHD) complimented each other? Why did Mikey and Raph care more of each other, more so than the others? Or am I just look to much into this?:trazz:

Thoughts?

And no, this is not turtle-cest I'm talking about, let's get real here. :tshifty:

Yorae 02-18-2013 03:40 AM

Hmm.. Maybe they are bonding over the fact that they are the shortest two :P

Or maybe because they are the youngest? (I know Mikey is the youngest, but is Raph the second youngest?)
When we were growing up, my two youngest siblings were pretty much inseperable. They would bicker all the time but they got each others' back as well.

Shredded 02-18-2013 04:53 AM

I think it's weird people keep pointing to. "That is the oldest turtle and that is the youngest."

the staple mark tends to be that Leo is the oldest and Mikey is the youngest.

But erh... when did any medium ever say that? All of the turtles are exactly the same age! they got mutated the same day and have birtday the same day. They all had "Fifteen mutations-day." at the very first episode of this show. They are equally old!

And you know, some people in real life whom is twenty tends to act like fifteen years old, while other twenty year olds have the maturity of a thirty year old, that's just people, we are all different like that.

And well, there is a hiraki among the turtles regardless, which you know.. is what happens among people whom work together.

Clearly Leo stands on top, because he is the leader.
Second stands Raphael, as being sort of an alfa-male and freely oposes the leader on a regular basis.
Then stands Donatello whom mostly just minds his own buisness.
And last stands Mikey, whom every-body sees at "the irresponsible one." whom needs to be taken care of.

But well.. Raphael is a very protective person, and I think the one person there is to be protective of, would be Mikey.

Also I think they communicate a little better, because Leo and Donnie are clearly big "thinkers." always trying to be all logical about stuff, while Raph and Mikey are more "Tumblers." whom likes to tumble around and be physical without thinking to much.

Mikey knows what person he can easiest annoy, and get into a big tumble with, he clearly enjoys annoying Raph. So yeah, they have a pretty cute bond.

Leo is oldest, then Raph, then Donnie, then Mikey. By seconds, like real turtles.

Without fitting the logic into the universe of the show, I'll offer the real world explanation:

In the original comics, before Casey showed up, Mike and Raph were best buds. It was after Casey dropped into the picture that their bond was sort of forgotten about, as Raph had a kindred spirit in crazy ol' Case-man.

It's one aspect of the Turtles that I've always enjyed, and now enjoy seeing it coming back in a medium that more people can see.

Megatron 02-18-2013 12:36 PM

Just cause they were mutated at the same time, doesnt mean they were the same age. They were just 4 turtles from a pet shop so the age gap comes from there, Must be a few months or weeks apart i guess.

Because a few months or weeks makes such a difference in peoples maturity that it would matter..

Mikey just acts the way he does because he is the person that he is, same goes for Leo.
And that's fine, that's cool. Their age really doesn't matter.

And I still can't remember any official thing with the turtles calling out whom is the oldest or the youngest, if I am wrong please correct me.

If there is any tely episode, movie or comic strip where some-one out-right says. "He's the oldest." then I retreat my statement. And I was wrong.
But I don't recall any such thing and.. it doesn't really matter. They were mutated the same day, they developed together.. and well mostly.. wauw poor Splinter, all alone with four toddler turtles the same age :/

BabyTurtles 02-18-2013 03:07 PM

They are all the same age :D Leo just acts the oldest and Mikey just acts the youngest :3

and about Raph and Mikey....IDK....

Raph is just protective in general, but since Mikey is the "youngest" he's a little more protective of him.

and Mikey.....I think he gets serious when any of his brothers are in danger or hurt, remember when Donnie was kicked in the face and knocked out by Bradford you can see Mikey was not happy about it and tried to attack Bradford with his kusarigama the SHARP part!! http://24.media.tumblr.com/4dd4baaa5...1iq3o1_500.gif
XD I never saw Mikey use the sharp part on a human! lol. Mikey might be a goofball but he is totally there when they need him.

I think they all get a little worried about Mikey, but since Raph is the more passionate turtle it shows more I guess :3

Zulithe 02-18-2013 03:13 PM

i'm really hesitant to say any two brothers bond the most, but I see your argument and I don't really disagree.

However I would propose that leo and donnie probably have the closest bond even if it has not been demonstrated on screen very well yet. They are the two most level headed and never seem to argue or make fun of one-another very often. I think they have an understanding and are probably pretty close as a result.

Each brother bonds with the other brothers differently, I love how their relationships are all a little different.

In those particular cases, the turtle given the attention was down for the count, helpless. Kinda makes sense.

Donatello19 02-18-2013 03:30 PM

I always thought Donnie and Mikey were the closest (not in the nick show, just in general) but I like Mike and Raph's relationship. Don't forget about Raph's pep talk to Mikey at the end of "New Friend, Old Enemy".

... well I have to disagree.

Depends on what version we are talking about, but it seems to me that in this new show, Donnie is the one to tolerate Mikey the least.. becoming genuinly very very annoyed when Mikey upsets him.

Then yeah, in the 2k3 show, I would be willing to say Donnie tolerated Mikey the most.
But then again, 2k3 Donnie seemed to be a pacifist by nature and unbelivable patient regarding... urh.. every-thing. He was just a ridicoulesly patient and understanding, kind hearted person in that show.
A trait new Donnie doesn't seem to share with him, he is not nearly as patient, but I don't really blame him or any-thing, every single time he has gotten annoyed in this show, it did seem very legit, and mostly the other turtles should just be quiet and let him safe the day with his tech X)

hmm really? never thought of it like that...I guess your kinda right, though to me, Donnie always seems to try and correct Mikey while the others either glare or smack him lol XD I guess I just assumed the one to smack Mikey the least is the one that tolerates him the most  it also seems Mikey can get away with yelling at Donnie (Mikey even hit him that one in Turtle temper) lol

ironman29758 02-18-2013 05:40 PM

It's the little moments that shows that Raph really cares about Mikey like in "Pulverizer" when Mikey picked up the gum off the floor and Raph slapped it out his hands or Raph telling Mike he's a good guy which is like Venom said, feels reminiscent of the early TMNT Comics.

While Donnie and Mikey feel in a way like best friends where Donnie is the geeky best friend and Mikey spaces out and just jokes around about him a lot.(like when Donnie was trying to explain DNA to Mikey).

tlg80 02-18-2013 05:54 PM

I noticed the closeness between the two when one was hurt. Raph and Mikey may poke fun at each other, but when it comes down to it, are there for each other. All of them are there, just in different ways. But this crossed my mind as well. I also like how Leo and Raph interact in this series. And I love it when Donnie starts to explain something and the others are like :trolleye:.

I was pretty much going to say something along these lines.

I like how you mentioned about the original comic because I have recently read them. Though Mike and Raph we're seen spending time with each other (sparring), Raph's temper got the best of him; he even tried to kill Mikey but later came to his senses. Lol I know, that's messed up right? Those were the early days..

I stumbled upon this.

Don't know which OT episode was this, but they seem pretty close even back then.

ironman29758 02-18-2013 09:53 PM

Yeah ever since the first tmnt movie I'm used to Donnie and Mikey being best friends and that basiacally became the norm for me but then I found the original Mirage comics, learned about Mikey and Ralph's relationship and was like :teek:. But looking back it makes a lot of sense(just like Raph being the only one who asked April for beer. Surprising April actually got it for him though since he's technically underage but he's a ninja turtle so I guess it's okay to bend the rules for him).

That pic almost looks like fanart to me, you sure its from the show? Raph did cry over Michelangelo when he thought he died in Mondo Gecko's episode.

I know for a fact that is indeed a screenshot from the series, but I'm not gonna tell you which episode it's from. You'll just have to find out for yourself! :trazz:

TheSmartOne 02-19-2013 09:53 AM

I've noticed that Raph does seem to give more of a care when Mikey is involved, and this just falls down to their nature. Mikey's technically the baby. The new series is still in its early stages, but there are a lot of instances where you can see that everyone, not soly Raph, looks out for him a lot:
Leo gives him an affectionate head pat after rescuing him from Bradford.
Donnie's way more impatient with him then in the 4Kids show, but he seems to go big brother on Mikey the most- trying to teach him (DNA. I will never be able to hear those three letters without laughing now...), and trying to reassure him (The stealth plan for getting April's phone back) the most. Raph's kind of got his tough guy image to maintain, but the fact that he's fiercely protective plays in a lot. And he seems to go into that mode the most when Mikey's involved.

The best comparison I can give is the Leatherhead episode versus New Girl in Town. Donnie's momentarily knocked out and thrown into Raph when Leatherhead goes nuts after seeing the power cell. Raph's response to that is to kind of unceremoniously shove him aside and throw himself back into the fray. Compare to when Mikey goes down against Snakeweed, and Raph's immediately goes 'OHDAMN". Well, I feel that says something. Stronger bond? Maybe not quite. All the turtles look out for each other when things get serious. But I think Raph's protective nature, coupled in with the fact that Mikey's the youngest, a.k.a 'in need' of protecting, plays in a lot. To a certain extent Raph probably feels that Leo and Donnie can take care of themselves a little bit better then Mikey. Which is why he's usually one of the first to Mikey's defence.

Raph's venom trip was hilarious though. The Pulverizer is definitely one of my favourite episodes to date.

I like seeing Mike hang around Donnie in this series because it's almost like a very, very subtle hint that Mike really isn't a stupid as everyone seems to think.

In the comics, Mike is actually bright, but he's a very "right-brained" being, so while Don can rattle off the technical jargon, Mike would be the one table to spout it back "in English", though he most likely doesn't care enough or want to - a slacker smart guy, if you will.

That's exactly how I felt. I like how in the IDW Mikey issue where it look like Mikey spaces out whenever his brother tries to teaches him something but at the end he uses it to help take down the criminals stealing the jewels(love to see that issue translated into a nick episode similar to what 4kids did with the Christmas Mikey episode)

I think there was a similar moment with one of the Nick online comics. Splinter was testing the four of them and Mikey's task was to get through a door with an electronic lock on it. He had to think back on some point in time where Donnie went teacher on him, and used the info he learned to get through. Mikey is definitely not as stupid as everyone sometimes treats him. He just has different priorities...
Sometimes these priorities involve Pizza.
Or dancing.
Or video games.

Back to the point, I agree. I'd like to see an episode where Mikey actually gets to show that he's not as dumb as his brother's seem to think. They can be really hard on him sometimes >_>

there was another funny one where Donnie was tying to teach Mikey about DNA and he just stared like he didn't know what he was talking about.....but later when they go to the Kraang lair
Donnie says " It looks like they are collecting DNA"
and Leo goes "what??" then Mikey says "building blocks dude! pssh, I'll drop the science on you later"

XD LOL so he WAS listening to Donnie.

TheBlueTurtle1 02-25-2013 01:42 AM

They all have different personalities, some aspects of those may mix and some may clash. I think no 1 brother has a favouite, and I think the concern for Raph from Mikey was born out of the fact Mickey's fun in your face attitude, irritates Raph, and he felt guilty. :ohwell:

XDD Yeah, exactly (I loved that part, it made me laugh). Mikey kind of plays the airhead, but I think he pays waaay more attention then his brothers give him credit for. It was mentioned earlier in the thread, but he was hyper focused when Raph went down in the recent episode. Heck, he even had to get Donnie to focus (The Venom Vs. Poison thing. I loved Mikey's face. He was just like "adnfbyafDONNIE,THERE'S NO TIME FOR YOUR SMART SCIENCE STUFF").

RaphAndDonnie 02-25-2013 10:38 AM

I've never really dwelled on it before but I do see how Raph and Mikey have a sort of "stand out"-ish brotherhood bond than the others. I see it in the 2012 toon, the 2k3 toon and I sort of see it in the OT. It's kind of cool when you think about it :tsmile:

Read it carefully, Mikey felt guilty for always mocking Raph.

Martin 02-25-2013 11:01 AM

It has been always been like this. Mike and Raph are constantly teasing each other but deep down they really care for one another, like a lot. It was like that in the mirage comics, in the 2k3 series, etc etc. They do seem to have a deeper relationship, but that doesn't mean they don't care as much for their brothers, it's just that their bond is tighter.

Here is a panel from raph's micro back in vol 1:
