Dinosaurs Rock!
So I've been a big fan of dinosaurs ever since I was a wee lad pretending to be a paleontologist, and I've spent a good deal of my life reading about, watching, and playing with all things prehistoric. Now I'm asking for suggestions for anything Dino related that you're a fan of or think would be a good investment of my time to check out. (TV, Movies, Comics, Video Games, Everything else!)
Some of my favorite dino related stuff: Jurassic Park- movies, novels, comics, toys Xenozoic Tales- comics Cadillacs and Dinosaurs- Tv show and video game Dinotopia Dinosaurs- Tv show What are your personal favorites? |

We actually used to have a Dinosaur News thread for whenever anyone wanted to share an update on new discoveries, fossils, etc... Maybe we can bring that back. :)
Movies: I've always loved the 'Jurassic Park' movies, no matter how scientifically inaccurate the dinosaurs might be. The books were alright... but I'm seriously thinking of seeing the new 3-D'd 'Jurassic Park' on the big screen again. :D Books: Long ago there was a book in the library called 'Maia: A Dinosaur Grows Up', that had beautiful artwork about a maiasaur going up in the forests of Canada. I am bound and determined to find this book and add it to my Library. The 'Dinotopia' books by James Gurney are absolutely gorgeous to look at and fun to read. There was a Live/CGI mini-series made of it, but it did it No justice... And how could one forget 'Raptor Red' by Robert T. Bakker? TV: I used to love 'Dinosaurs' when I was growing up - Roy the T-Rex was always my favorite. Another old favorite was the 90s 'Land of the Lost' with the strange looking Sleestacks (sp?). Today, I'll try to catch every new BBC/Discovery/History Special made for TV nowadays... Live Events: 'Walking with Dinosaurs: The live Experience' - if you like dinosaurs, you HAVE to go see this - The music for the show is also fantastic (and for sale at the shows!) Comics: I have One issue of 'Cadillacs and Dinosaurs', and a few issues of Lawson's 'Paleo'. Online stuff: There's an artist on DeviantArt that's currently working on a project called 'Mark of the Conifer', and she did a mini-comic prequel to the story called 'The Pact', As well as post some of her major character designs. She does an amazing job... |
I love Extreme Dinosaurs, an animated series similar to Street Sharks/TMNT, as well as Jim Lawsons Paleo comic.
|
Saw Jurassic Park 3D. It was a BLAST

I used to be dinosaur mad too, I have some fairly cool fossils but they're packed away in the loft. I'd be happy to post some pics when I find them if anyone is interested. They're mostly ammonites and various bark/tree pieces.
I still like to watch all the dinosaur documentaries :) and I love going to the natural history museum in London, there are some truly breathtaking exhibits there. Growing up I loved Denver the last dinosaur, Land before Time, Dink and 'Dinosaurs'. Not a huge fan of Jurassic Park but I thought the ride and experience at Universal were pretty amazing. Velociraptors scare me :D lol. |

If there's interest, I'd love this thread to become the new Dinosaur news/updates spot. And how is Raptor Red? Ive always been interested but never found the time to read it. I also forgot to mention I really enjoyed Dinotopia as a kid, gonna have to revisit that as well. Thanks for all the awesome suggestions everyone! |

I'd love to see pics of those fossils if its not too much trouble. Ive got a huge nature collection myself including a decent amount of fossils, mostly plants and small sea creatures and one small chunk of dino i got in Yosemite. [QUOTE] Sure I'll try to dig mine out (we have mouse sized spiders in the loft and I may be gone a while, lol). I'd like to see the sea creatures and the dino chunk from your collection too tho. Argh, every time I say 'fossils' now I end up doing the 'dum, dum, dummm' from Phineas and Ferb :lol: |
Extreme Dinosaurs was on Netflix for the longest time, so if you by chance have it you could look on there.
Also always loved the animated film "We're Back!" about three Dinosaurs that end up in a city befriending two kids. |

The artwork in Dinotopia is absolutely beautiful, and there's been several 'sequel' books since - The world beneath is the only one I've actually gotten my hands on. James Gurney has his own website where he blogs about dinosaurs, his books, different events that he attends... |
Dinosaurs, dinosaurs, I love dinosaurs and other things prehistoric and reptilian!
Currently I live in Alberta, which is a gold mine for dinosaur fossils and home to the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology, one of the best paleontological institutions in the world. Sadly, I haven't been there in almost a decade, but will change that this summer. It also bears a large Tyrannosaur statue as an attraction. When it comes to dinosaur media, I like a lot of things, but I'm picky. Like many, I grew up in Jurassic Park and the Land Before Time, and a million other things. My current favourites are indeed Raptor Red, and Dinotopia has beautiful illustrations, but is a little cheesy now that I'm a grown-up. But besides those, I haven't seen mentioned: "The New Dinosaurs" by Dougal Dixon: a book of speculation about what dinosaurs may have evolved into had they not become extinct. Some are uninspired because they're basically dinosaur versions of current animals, but others are wonderfully weird, and many are furry. Ricardo Delgado's "Age of Reptiles" comic series: a set of silent comics telling stories of dinosaur life at various periods during prehistoric times. It has incredible artwork and has been released in an omnibus edition by Dark Horse, so go for it! Far-seer / Fossil Hunter / Foreigner: a trilogy of science fiction novels by Robert J. Sawyer involving the societal growth of a species of small Tyrannosaurs who are the result of aliens implanting dinosaurs from Earth. Fun reads. End of an Era: Also by Robert J. Sawyer, a more standard time-travel novel. Feathered Dinosaurs: The Origin of Birds by John Long and Peter Schouten. The best illustrated book of feathered dinosaurs that I've seen. And someday, I'm going to see the dinosaur statues in Crystal Palace Park in London. They were sculpted in the eighteen-hundreds and look very different from what we see today, but have been declared a national monument and been preserved. My favourite dinosaurs were always carnivores, since they were more intelligent, and following that, I preferred the smaller models. My absolute favourite is Troodon Formosus, which is famous for having the largest brain of any dinosaur. Not that that's a huge achievement, but it's still fun, and inspired the odd thought experiment "The Dinosauroid" which involved building a statue of what a dinosaur would look like, had it evolved into a humanoid being: http://www.thelivingmoon.com/43ancie...elsDinoman.jpg I am 100% in favour of the new depictions of dinosaurs as feathered. I like the look of reptilian dinosaurs, but feathers are reality and science, so there's nothing to disagree with. And I like the look of feathered ones, too. |
|
I love Drumheller Pterobat! One of my fave places, I've been twice, last time being 2009!
|
Awesome a dinosaur thread.I love it.
Like most people here I was a Land before time then Jurassic Park man...loved the movies and the two novels....I recall having a dinosaur reference book or two as a youngster. Is there any really good Encyclopedia type dinosaur books out there that anyone would recommend. I still get to enjoy dinosaurs on tv now as my sons watch Dinosaur train and Dino Dan....and maybe another one came think what its called haha I'm also keen to see these pictures when the get posted |

Here you go guys, the best pieces of my fossil collection. I'm afraid over the years I've forgotten what some are, my list wasn't in the box anymore :( . I inherited most of these from my Dad, he got me started on my love of dinosaurs. I used to spend hours identifying and cataloging these :tgrin: |
Wow! Those are some awesome fossils Blossombrooks!! I especially like the ammonite.
I went through my basement today and this is what I was able to dig up. (Excuse the pun) Behold, the awesomeness that is DINOSAURS!!! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8258/8...962b54ce_z.jpg Or the guy could have just ripped me off and sold me a rock... ;) http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8255/8...14d12010_c.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8264/8...d7203b2edf.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8258/8...d35ac07c_z.jpg Ok, so this last one isnt so much a fossil, as its just a cool rock i found during my search. But I put "Rock" in the title of this thread so i'm gonna let it slide: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8259/8...25267dbd_c.jpg I've got way more, mostly sea creatures as far as I can tell (really just shell imprints and shark teeth) but I cant seem to locate them right now. |

Yes, they do rock.
|
Dang, can't watch that here in the US AT-Man. But along the same lines...
|
Speaking of dinosaurs, did anyone go see Jurassic Park 3D? The 3D was amazing! It was the IMAX-like-one.
|
Ooh those are cool Shreddhead! That one with the plants on is amazing! A really good specimen. So is the dino bone part of the spine? Did you get any info on which dino it came from? That's an awesome piece to have.

On an unrelated note, did anyone else have these bedsheets growing up? http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8257/8...9407236e_z.jpg I remember seeing Fred Savage using them in the "Dinosaurs" vhs I linked a video to above and thinking I was soooo cool 8) Then years later I was watching Seinfeld and low and behold George Costanza was using the same sheets! |

So I've got a question for you guys. Do you have any recommendations for informative dinosaur books with good illustrations? I used to have a couple years ago, specifically one with Giganotosaurus on the cover (a very foreshortened image with its head in the foreground). But I have sadly lost these books over the years due to garage sales and/or just sloppy bookkeeping. I'd appreciate any recommendations, and I'd be truly grateful if anyone can help me re-discover the title of my lost Giganotosaurus book.
