How has your view on the Nick cartoon changed since September 2012?

The show is almost a year old now (hard to believe), so how has your view on the series changed from September 2012?

Overall I am very impressed with the show and its gone above expectations for me. While I don't think any of the stories so far have been particularly deep, the show manages to keep itself entertaining with the banter and characterisation of the main cast, particularly the Turtles and Splinter.

There are a few minor elements I don't like (some stupid characters like Spiderbitez or Pulverizer), but overall I have enjoyed a lot of the new characters introduced as well.

If you told me 2 years ago I would enjoy watching a show with a teenage April, a younger Splinter, and the Turtles fighting a Dog and Fish mutant, I would have thought it would be nonsense. Overall I hope they can improve more into Season 2.

Oculus Orbus 04-23-2013 01:35 PM

I had very low expectations, so it surpised me big time when it first started. For a pretty long while, it continued to grow on me, and I liked it better with every new episode. Then, after "I, Monster", I haven't been enjoying it that much, with "The Pulverizer" and "Cockroach Terminator" being specially weak, but the series still has my interest. I'm sure it'll get better in the next few episodes, the last one has been very good.

Have you forgotten how to tell time?

The show has some major plus points. High quality martial arts, atmosphere, a gritty city and numerous homages to other incarnations.

For me, the best point is the characters. They've done a really good job. From voice artists to turtle design - the result is outstanding.

I've also been surprised at how easily I've accepted aspects I thought I'd hate, like a teenage April.

My only criticism is actually something that is highly subjective: there are a few too many mutants running around New York City for my taste. I prefer the turtles and splinter as the only mutants, like the extraordinary in an ordinary setting. But that's just me. I enjoy so many other aspects of the show that I can easily see past this.

Really excited for more episodes and season 2.

HerpDerp 04-23-2013 02:05 PM

TIL: 7 months is almost a year.

To answer the question, I'm not as interested as I used to be. If I had to cite a reason it would probably be that I'm getting a little tired of the same jokes and tropes over and over again. The world feels very limited, too. I know that's partly because they're mutant turtles and have to stay hidden, but everything is just starting to feel kind of ... samey.

There are only 6 eps left in the season and we're fairly deep in its first year.

LH 04-23-2013 02:51 PM

Hmm.. Well, back in September I wasn't watching the show.. I had heard of it, and saw the toys on the shelves, but my perspective of the series didn't start until December... Speaking from that point, I still love it. I love the fact that the series can be both fun and serious at the same time. I love how the story of each episode has the ability to pull you in and make you want to keep watching. This is my favorite show on television.

BabyTurtles 04-23-2013 03:02 PM

when I first saw it...I thought "what are they doing to TMNT!?"

than I started seeing promos for the show and wanted to see it badly!

and now it's my favorite show right now :)

Donatello19 04-23-2013 03:07 PM

I never really doubted that it would be good, but it sure was fun listening to everyone complaining about the three toes, a teenage April, and having a race of aliens called The Kraang instead of Krang himself. I am happy they didn't go with those original leaked designs though, those were terrible.

Well, it's only about half a year old, regardless of how many episodes are left.

TurtleTitan97 04-23-2013 03:37 PM

I still find the show enjoyable. Although I was a bit worried at first, I had confidence that the show would be good. Way to go to the Nick crew! :D

Gwydion 04-23-2013 03:50 PM

When I first saw there was going to be a new Turtles show done in CGI, I was extremely skeptical. I can't say I'm a huge fan of that sort of animation, so I really wasn't expecting to like it on that front. I also knew it'd be weird getting used to "Raphael" as Donatello and April as a teenager. But on the flip side, I also heard a lot of news that I thought was pretty cool. So while I went into it not sure I would like it, I kept an open mind and wound up being fairly excited nonetheless.

Since then, the show has exceeded my expectations. While there are some things I think it could improve upon, I'm absolutely loving it so far! It's fun and has my favorite Turtle personalities to date. I really like what they did with the Kraang, and I personally like Fishface and Dogpound as Shredder's new henchmen. All the homages to various other versions of the franchise make me as an older fan smile, and dare I say I might even like this theme song better than the original. :P

Occasionally the story is a bit jerky (like them losing the power cell to the Kraang at the end of one episode and then suddenly chasing them down only to lose them again(?) at the beginning of the next or April not knowing who was in the photo despite being right there when Splinter explained that it was of himself and his family), and some of the character designs/animation make me wince (like Spiderbytez/lot of the human cast), but overall I think those are fairly minor nitpicks in the grand scheme of things. It's very entertaining, and much better than I would originally have given it credit for!

DVD 04-23-2013 04:05 PM

I was really looking forward to it.
I saw the first episode (in the half hour preview before the one hour premiere), and I thought it was brilliant.
The first story set the style and I was impressed.
Since then, I've looked forward to each new episode, and I think, without exception, I hav enjoyed every one of them.
With 6 to go, I agree that it's hard to believe that this first year has almost gone by already.
I hope there isn't too big a gap, an we see season two before September.

demonsweat 04-23-2013 04:08 PM

Several episodes ago I thought that this show had the potential to be my favorite of the three, and I haven't swayed from that. It's still a little too early to say for sure but that idea is solidifying with each and every episode.

All I really wanted out of this show was good, real martial arts choreography and decent focus on their individual personalities (and good dialogue between the four). Needless to say it's delivered on those fronts, and then some. No way did I expect to love it this much. You really do get a sense that the people behind the show really are hardcore fans themselves and that's just so rad. I watch a lot of toons, but this is definitely my current fave. :D

What leaked designs?

Ninja Tiptup 04-23-2013 04:16 PM

My view has basically remained the same. I loved it from day one and besides a few weaker episodes I've continued to love it and love it even more. So I guess it was a gradual increase from an already high view.

Bossa Nova 04-23-2013 07:53 PM

Not a whole lot has changed. I didn't like a teenage April, I didn't like the emphasis on Don's crush on her and I didn't like the new design/attitude of Splinter and I still don't like these things now or see myself ever really changing my opinion on them. On the flip side, I liked (for the most part) the animated designs of the turtles themselves, I liked that Kraang =/= Shredder and I liked the overall characters of Dogpound and Fishface, and as the show has continued this has only solidified even more, especially the more we learn about the latter two in particular.

I'm still really attached to the 2k3 series and it's difficult not to compare this series to that one, but I do fully support it for all its elements that I DO like and its own spin on the characters. With this last episode my view on Karai has started to slowly shift since although I've always liked her character I just HATED how Nick brought her into the series and I was very disappointed that I'd come to dislike one of my favorite characters. But already they're putting her in a light I'm really warming up to so I'm pretty excited that Nick can shift my opinion so well.

drgon78 04-23-2013 09:15 PM

When I first heard about it, I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I am really liking this show. The main reason is that I really like this show's version of the turtles, April, Splinter, Shredder, and Karai. I was unsure at first because it was going to be computer animated 3d series but I really do like the style, characters, and the story of the series.

I kind of find myself in this boat as well. Some of it is probably due to the computer animation wearing a bit thin for me. I'm a bit old-fashioned, I guess. I just prefer the 2-D stuff.

That, and I have moments where I feel as though I'm watching a show written and directed by hyperactive kids for hyperactive kids. Seriously, I blink and I feel like I've missed something. How's a person supposed to eat a bowl of cereal and watch cartoons if entire plot points are wrapped up between bites?

I 100% agree this. Its a great show!

RaphAndDonnie 04-24-2013 01:42 AM

I was pretty indifferent towards it. I had first heard about the show in December 2012, via Rob Paulsen's podcast. As someone who wasn't invested in the Turtles before I didn't know what to expect. Now I love it. It's my favorite version of the Turtles.

Candy Kappa 04-24-2013 02:03 AM

I always had a positive view on the new show, and it did not disappoint at all. The show was even better then I had hoped for.

Didn't know there was any leaked designs.

of what I've seen was the 2D artwork with the turtles sporting 2 toes and the early teaser trailer sporting all four turtles with the same Leonardo CG model and crudely textured. But nothing leaked.

Teddy 04-24-2013 02:43 AM

I had very low expectations of this new CGI show I heard was coming out last year. I thought it would be terrible, like all the other "kid" shows out nowadays. But I was pleasantly surprised by the premiere, and I've been hooked ever since! It's currently my fav series of all.

They just did an outstanding job with the turtles and Splinter. I actually LIKE all the main characters for once. I usually can't stand Leo or Mikey, but I'm definitely loving this version of Leo at least. And Donnie tended to be kind of a boring character in the past if you ask me, but this one is definitely my favorite version by far! ^-^ This Splinter took some getting used to for me, but he's definitely the funniest and most bad-ass Splinter ever!

And Raph has always been my fav turtle in everything, so that hasn't changed. ;)

Mandi-chan 04-24-2013 05:48 AM

When I first heard about it, I wasn't totally gaga over the idea. I loved the 4Kids series (or, at least the first 5 seasons of the 4Kids series) so much, that I didn't think I'd enjoy the new show. Especially with all the talk about it being more humor-driven and Old Toon inspired.

But then I heard Greg Cipes and Rob Paulsen were going to be in it, and my interest was snagged.

So I watched the premiere when it showed up on my On Demand (I didn't feel like watching it as it aired with all the annoying kids commercials), and liked it enough-but waited to watch more of it when the eps showed up on Hulu Plus, and in the meantime I followed people's opinions here on this board.

When there was buzz about The Gauntlet, I decided to watch the ep on On Demand instead of waiting for Hulu Plus. I was hooked, and went and marathoned the episodes in-between that I had missed. Loving it, and regretting letting some negative opinions steer me clear from wanting to watch the show live.

I've been watching it live since then, and have pretty much loved every single episode. The humor is great, the stories are good (although a little choppy with consistency between eps), and the characterization...I can't gush enough over the characterization (well...except April's, but I'm not going to get into a rant right now about her...)!

They all act and speak like teenagers (unlike the 4Kids show, who's attempt in S1 with the "teen-speak" is really embarrassing/awkward to sit through now-which is probably why they dropped it completely after a while and left Mikey to pick up the slack in that area), each of the brothers are interesting with both strengths and flaws (again, something else the 4Kids show didn't really handle well IMO. I felt like Leo was the only one to really get any positive character development in that show, while Mikey is the most flawed of the brothers who suffers from character regression as the series went on), and they're all very endearing because of it!

This younger Splinter is great, the way the show balances the Kraang and Foot storylines is well done, and I just love it!

I'm not going to lie, after watching a handful of episodes I immediately started enjoying it more than the 4Kids series (especially since I'm re-watching the first season of the 4Kids series right now), now that I've seen all the eps of Nick's first season I can easily say that I do love it more than the 4Kids series right now (although, I do still love the 4Kids series).

So yeah, this show definitely went above and beyond my expectations for it!

Shark_Blade 04-24-2013 05:50 AM

I was a bit meh before seeing it, 3D animation series were boring - just look at Jimmy Neutron and Chum Chum (?).

But after seeing the first episode, I was hooked, line and sinkered. Didn't regret giving this show a chance, I love it!!

Bauer536 04-24-2013 08:33 AM

When I heard Nickelodeon was now going to own the franchise, I was like, "Oh God. This is not good." Then I read the information on what the show was going to be like. I had high hopes, but I had to be cautious. Already, people were hating the designs of the show and praising that the new IDW comics were better. However, I hated the direction the IDW comics went. Throughout the process of making this show, I had hope.

When the show finally came out, I knew it was going to be good, but I did not know how good. It was GREAT!!!!:tgrin: Loved it when it started, and I can't wait to see what happens next. So far, aside from "The Pulverizer," there has not been a bad episode. This is by far my favorite TMNT cartoon. Just fantastic.:tcool:

BubblyShell22 04-24-2013 08:41 AM

When I first heard Nickelodeon was going to own this franchise and bring a new show with it, I was leery. I've never really been a fan of Nick that much, so I wasn't sure what to expect. However, I decided to give the show a chance, and I'm so glad I did. Each new episode has been great, and I actually like the teenage April aspect despite how I felt at first about her. The Turtles are awesome and even Splinter and Shredder are cool. I'm totally hooked on this show, and I can't wait to see what else they do. Ciro and crew have done a fantastic job with it.

Forneus 04-24-2013 09:06 AM

I thought it looked awful. There I said it. I thought the designs, the CG visuals looked horrible and I almost wished the show had a quick death so they could move on to better things...

Then it turns out the designs are fine in motion, and the show is simply brilliant (Quite possibly my favorite TMNT anything, ever). Egg on mah face. So much egg.

Zany Orange Dude 04-24-2013 01:12 PM

You know I am still loving as much as I did when the show came out.:tgrin:

Shredded 04-24-2013 02:57 PM

I was exstremely surprised, I did not exspect to like this show at all.

The thing is, I have casually watched Turtles now and then back in time, but they never actually caught me, and I never got what the big deal was back in time, I couldn't even tell what the turtles names were, in spite of having watched some 4kids episodes in tely, very very casually.

I was in London at may 2012, and attended a panel where the show creators of this new show was present, to talk about the show and.. I was not impressed. The CGI turned me off instantly, I didn't exspect to be able to stomach it, but I had to admit that the creators sounded very genuine and passionate, and they had some ideas I found interesting... if done in 2D

But alas, the show came out, and I thought. "Hey, I was at that panel, I might as well just try and give the show a go, I kind of need to do that so I can tell the full story in the future."

.... mind... blown...

I had no idea and I had not exspected, this has become one of my top ten favourite animated shows very very quickly. I love the humour I love the characters, I love the pasing of the story.
This show made me interested in turtles, so much so that I went back, watched some Fred Wolf episodes, watched the 4kids show with compleately renewed interest and attention, even dug up some of the old comics, and yeah, watched the old life action movies.

I still have to say.. I find this show to be the best thing the turtles has ever produced, but on the same time, I am a bit of a treasure digger when it comes to old franchises, and I find it very fascinating and interesting to dig through the history of the turtles and exsperience the different interpretations. And it's this show doing, that my interest turned here.

Though well, admittedly stuff like that happens often to me. I had my "Dracula phase." I dug myself through fifteen different Movie dracula interpretations and the original book, I had my "Batman phase." I dug myself through old comics, the comics fans has considered being the most important ones, movies, tely shows. It's just what I do, and I love doing it X)

With the turtles thus far I have dug myself through following. "The original Mirage Comics." "the Fred Wolf cartoon." "The Archie Comics." "The three life action movies." "The next mutation tely show." and "The 4kids cartoon." am I lacking any-thing?

Gyt Kaliba 04-24-2013 03:33 PM

When I first heard that Nick had the series, I was a little worried. As much as I like the OT, I wasn't sure I wanted a complete return to that style of a TMNT cartoon, and that was pretty much what I expected out of Nick. Then we heard it was going to be CG, my expectations dropped again. I hate the way that 2D animation is quickly dying out nowadays. Then we started to slowly get other news, such as designs, and casting, and clips, and I was kept pretty interested. I knew I was going to have to, at the very least, give the show it's fair chance - something I probably would have done anyway, but I liked what I saw in the clips (outside of the CG anyway, which I'm still only lukewarm about), so I was going into it with a bit more of an open mind.

Then we actually got the show, and episode by episode, it's quickly become my favorite incarnation, yes. At least, it is right now - once things settle down, I'll be able to feel out it's place in my mind a little better. I love the characterizations though, I love the humor, I love the stories so far...it's far from perfect, but this really does seem like the perfect merger of humor that the OT had, and action that 2K3 had. It's the best of two worlds, all rolled up into one package that serves it up pretty nicely.

That said, I do still have some misgivings. I'm still not much for the CG. I'm a little worried about how predictable some of the 'twists' coming up may be, if stuff I and others have thought up turns out to be right. I'm also still not so fond of Kevin Michael Richardson as Shredder, it's just way too obvious of a casting - it works, but it doesn't shine. Beyond that, I'm pretty happy though, and Paulsen's Donatello has made me like a character I never looked twice at before, so...yeah. I'm a big fan thus far.

CyberCubed 04-24-2013 04:35 PM

My only gripe is that the Kraang get so much screentime in the show over the Foot Soldiers. Kids watching this show first might actually think the Kraang are the main villains over the Foot, heh.

Shredder has also surprisingly done very little. In the 4kids series we already had 3 major Shredder rights by the 23rd episode of Season 1.

kelligrafie 04-26-2013 02:10 PM

I'm very happy with how the series has gone. I went through the following stages.
  • Heard about the new series and that Sean Astin plus an original cast member were voicing the Turtles. Excited.
  • Saw a trailer on youtube. Which put me off. Maybe the trailers didn't do the series any justice because I've heard other long time fans say the same thing.
  • Watched a video from Comic Con and was totally convinced by the enthusiasm shown by the writers and cast. Plus when I saw Rob Paulsen's credit list on Wiki and IMDB, I knew that here was a man who had dedicated his life to voicing cartoons and he would not do this series if it was inferior to the original.

I have absolutely loved this series. The casting couldn't have been any better. I have to single out Greg Cipes because he is brilliant. This is my first experience of his voicing talent and shall look out for him in the future.

The only thing I would say to the writers is that maybe they could have held off a few of the characters like the Rat King for another series. We've been a bit overwhelmed by new faces this season. Obviously they didn't know they'd get a second (and third) series for sure, but for younger/new fans it might have been too much.

Just don't bring back Casey Jones. Most pointless character ever.

Maybe I touched a nerve with Casey. I'll explain.

I have very limited experience of Casey but he struck me as being a character who is just there to generate scenes when the writers hit a block. That's just the impression I got.

I'd only be interested in him appearing to see how it changes the dynamic between Donnie and April. For me it is 99% Turtles 1% other characters. I understand you need other people/mutants in there or it gets repetitive. But I don't feel Casey to be essential as say Splinter would be.

I don't pretend to know all the characters from TMNT inside out. I just know who I like, who I relate to and who I don't.

Alas we don't get Cartoon Network in my house. I've had to resort to 'other means' of viewing *cough*. BUT the series has just literally started coming through the CITV channel which we DO get. So maybe TT will also show up. In a perfect world.

It's all good. Everyone's got their opinion, after all. :D Casey is much more than a throw-away character though. If nothing else, he's the guy Raphael buddies up to and confides in, which is something Raph's character needs. The two of them make a pretty great fighting team too. They're more aggressive and a lot less tactical than when the turtles fight together, which can be cool (but can also get them into more trouble). Plus he gives the turtles another human ally, one that actually fight and get into dangerous situations (I know they're priming April for this in this particular iteration, but she's still pretty green.) Casey's got the street smarts to really help them out against the Foot and other gangs.

Me, I like Casey mostly because he's all badass. Vigilante street-justice is always cool, and the guy prefers blunt objects as his weapons of choice. Kinda blurs the line between good guy and psycho, and that's pretty awesome, IMO. ;)

I always like it when you read about real life vigilantes in the papers with "Batman Syndrome". They usually turn out to be wimps who live with their mothers. I'm just like, "Dude, leave it to the cartoons. They can take a beating. You however..."

CyberCubed 04-26-2013 03:09 PM

Casey is one of the most important characters with the most depth and history of any supporting character.
