What if TMNT was an Anime?

After watching the Marvel Anime series (X-Men, Wolverine, Iron-Man and Blade)
I had an idea in regards to TMNT. What if they were in anime in a similar style to that? Who would do their voices and what story line would they have?
Personally I think the IDW comic series would be perfect for their anime story line but they have all the right elements for them to be an anime. So fellow Anime lovers who do you think would do the voices and what company should produce it?

CyberCubed 04-28-2013 07:46 AM

It would probably be terrible, like most toyetic anime. April would also have a number of fanservice scenes, even the 16 year old version from the Nicktoon. Already the anime fandom has caught wind of this new April and are calling her, "loli April."

Damn anime fans have to ruin everything.

Cowabungawolf89 04-28-2013 07:53 AM

It probably wouldn't be so bad, and who says April had to be fan service? The anime could be serious, dark and gritty like Rurouni Kenshin is.

Powder 04-28-2013 08:10 AM

It already was.

Prejudiced fool. If some anime fans are annoying, they all are? Same attitude that racists have... Hmm.

Cowabungawolf89 04-28-2013 08:15 AM

Not like that though... I mean a serious legit one. The IDW storyline would make an awesome template

Then why is April already coined "loli April" by the anime community? They're already drawing risqué fanart of her and she's only 16.

Powder 04-28-2013 08:22 AM

You're generalizing, stop being so God damned stupid. Most people in the actual 'anime community' don't even watch TMNT. & people of all ages and backgrounds make rule 34 of EVERYTHING, why should that come as a surprise?

Cowabungawolf89 04-28-2013 09:12 AM

Plus April wouldn't be 16 in this anime of it was real

Sleepingseeker 04-28-2013 09:39 AM

When Anime is done with a serious hand and clever writing it can be fantastic.

Of course there's a lot of junk out there as well, just as in American media. No need to get up-in-arms about it. I am a fan of Manga & anime. I have seen some wonderful anime, where the animation is rendered beautifully and the themes are just as adult as any well written science fiction/action movie with a decent and thought-provoking plot. I've just started getting into Bleach and it's very good.(both the Manga and the anime version)

I would love to see something dark and gritty done. The IDW story line would make a seriously awesome anime. Especially the flashbacks to feudal Japan when Yoshi looses his wife and then his children...

I'm glad you have the same vision I have. Not to mention they are ninja so that alone makes a great recipe for anime. I'm not trying to be stereotypical or anything but Ninja are from Japan and TMNT has many Japanese elements and if they can make anime out of Marvel then I don't see why TMNT can't be

It doesn't really matter to me, I just notice the Nick April more popular in the anime fandom than past April's. Most likely due to how young she is.

yeah.... none of my anime friends watch TMNT... and I have tons of them that know tons of them that know tons of them, etc....

Most people I know are divided. Either they like anime or they like US stuff, but not both. And the ones that like both like stuff like Batman and the Avengers not TMNT.

TMNT is heavily based in Japanese backstory and had color coded heroes fighting with martial arts. That's something anime fans should eat up.

Jester 04-28-2013 11:04 AM

"I'm Cybercubed. I only post in generalizations because to do otherwise would require actual thought."

Seriously, using the same logic Sentai fans should have eaten up Next Mutation....I mean it only makes "sense."

Why are you so focused on the teen April? If they made a dark and gritty version of the turtles for an Anime then April would be based on the her Mirage or possibly 1987 and 2003 appearance not the new Nickelodeon one.

Cipher 04-28-2013 11:38 AM

So, is the question here whether you'd like to see a TMNT anime (in which case the answer is no, and we already have it in the form of ultimate hyperbole with the Mutant Turtles episodes), or whether you'd like to see a Turtles show that doesn't have to censor itself, which, with industries as they are, is really only possible with Japanese cartoons? If that's the case, the answer is yes.

Cowabungawolf89 04-28-2013 11:45 AM

Plus Steven Blum (known as Spike in Cowboy Bebop) would make an awesome voice for Raphael

Gyt Kaliba 04-28-2013 12:03 PM

I'm not even going to dignify the 'all anime fans are underage girl hungry' insinuation cuz it doesn't even merit a response...

As a big anime fan myself, I've long thought there'd be some really cool stuff they could do with TMNT in anime form. Anime, in general anyway, gets more attention to detail in it's animation than US animation does, so right off the bat the show would probably look fabulous. And then there's the content thing - like Cipher said, anime is pretty much the only way animation can get away with the kind of action and violence that would be required of a real adaptation of one of the comics, so anyone wanting to see a really faithful adaptation of the Mirage material for example - the only way you'd get it would be something like this though.

That said though, it's risky. Mutant Turtles as an example aside, the Marvel anime that were brought up earlier were pretty...hit or miss. The Wolverine one had pretty hideous designs for the lead character and a poor story (at least it's resolution anyway); the X-Men one was meh; Iron Man was a little better but had questionable CGI. The Blade one was the best of the four I think, and while really enjoyable, still wasn't anything to write home about.

So it'd all depend on who was put in charge of it, what kind of work they wanted to do, and all that. The possibilities of a good TMNT anime are high...but there's also the chance it'd turn out pretty bad as well. I'd love to see it happen and see where it all went though.

I would put it in the hands of Gonzo, the people who made the Afro Samurai series

That could work. I'd be more hoping for Bones (the studio behind both Fullmetal Alchemist series, Soul Eater, and the Cowboy Bebop movie) myself, as they do some of the most consistently awesome animation IMO, and generally do pretty good stories too - but I'm not too sure how likely they'd be to be in the running.

Chances are it'd be Madhouse if anything, the ones doing the Marvel anime.

Oh yeah they are my alternate choice alongside Production I.G., Funimation (yes even them) Geneon (Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent) and Manga Entertainment (Street Fighter anime)

kzekedaurus 04-28-2013 01:01 PM

Hrmmm. Ignoring the quality of those Marvel anime, I've also thought about what another Turtles anime might look like.

First, content. Hrmmm... It would have to do it's own thing, for sure. I liked the Mutant Turtles OVA for being an even more bizarre take on the already goofy OT. It stands out, bastardization be damned.

Second, it has to have a good studio behind it. I love Madhouse... when they're doing their own material. As pointed out earlier, their Marvel adaptations are less than stellar, in animation and quality writing. I know they don't do overseas stuff any more, but a TMS helmed TV series would be a dream.

I'll write more later, gah.

Production I.G. could be interesting. I have to point out that the other ones though are licensees rather than production companies - FUNimation and Manga Entertainment don't make anime, they just bring them over here by licensing them from the Japanese companies that do make shows (such as Toei, Bones, Production I.G., Madhouse, Gonzo, etc.). Same with Geneon - or at least, that's what I would say, but Geneon is now defunct, so they do neither. ^_^;

Cowabungawolf89 04-28-2013 01:14 PM

Now that I think about it, Madhouse would be a great choice before Gonzo

BabyTurtles 04-28-2013 02:12 PM

.....err...after thinking about it...I would rather it not.

I like both anime and cartoons.

but I'm worried what they would do to a 16 year old April....I've seen enough anime to know....fanservice is most likely too happen than not.

also girls in general seem to get the short end of the stick in anime.

but there are some that don't......and anime can do a good job at animation when they want too ^_^

It'd be different...the jokes and so on....I'd watch it though :D (I always give stuff a chance!)

Ryanator008 04-28-2013 02:56 PM

I was thinking it could be made by Toie.

zak_the_neutrino 04-28-2013 08:28 PM

I always thought a TMNT anime show would be great and fit the characters perfect.

She'd have boobs, that's for sure. Either way, there would be no denying that 16 year old anime April would look 16 and not 12.

CyberCubed 04-28-2013 08:59 PM

But the Nick April does have boobs and does look around 15-16.

Don't understand how people thinks she looks 10-12.

Coola Yagami 04-28-2013 09:02 PM

Have you seen 15-16 year olds nowadays? Hell, when I was 15-16 any girl that still looked like April was made fun of for being a late bloomer.

METALHEAD 04-28-2013 10:16 PM

it could be very good.

or it could be very bad.

anime to me has been influencing American culture way too much these days.
but while i'm anti-anime that batman gotham knight was pretty damn good. having like, three different styles. if anything they should make segments of TMNT in different art styles.

Not really, there were always a few girls with big boobs in High School, but most of them were small A cups.

Cowabungawolf89 04-29-2013 12:23 AM

As i stated earlier, why are people so focused on her teen version? This idea has nothing to do with her Nickelodeon character. It's supposed to be based on the Mirage or even IDW comics so April will be older.

Cryomancer 04-29-2013 12:40 AM

The first season of the OT pretty much already is anime in several ways. And everyone pretty much agrees it's the best part of it's entire run unless you like the show specifically for comedy, yeah?

Cowabungawolf89 04-29-2013 01:21 AM

Didn't you guys see that TMNT genesis thing on youtube? That's whole reason why I had the idea for TMNT anime in the first place

ryukenden 04-29-2013 08:49 AM

As for the so-called TMNT "anime" which was OT inspired, it looked kind of weird but the quality wasn't very impressive, at least it was better than the European eps. A proper anime ought to be on the level of shoenen anime such as One Piece.

Cowabungawolf89 04-29-2013 10:50 AM

The people behind One Piece? Not bad but I was hoping for something a bit darker

Pterobat 04-29-2013 09:29 PM

I love many anime, with Neon Genesis Evangelion as my favourite. However, I'm past the phase where I think of "anime" as a term imbibed with some inherent coolness, as something wild and badass.

So I'm not excited by the idea of an anime adaptation of any of my favourite non-Japanese things. I'd be kinda wary, really: it's often hard for stories to cross cultural boundaries so easily, to be translated flawlessly from one society to another. From what I've heard, the Marvel anime are an example of that very thing.

I mean, anything's possible, I'm just saying the idea doesn't excite me.

Cowabungawolf89 04-29-2013 10:57 PM

But that doesn't mean a TMNT anime would fail, and I'm not counting that OVAl

Cryomancer 04-29-2013 11:34 PM

I think the OVA fits pretty damn well with the tone of OT anyway, all they did was add a couple characters and powerups and go on vacation. Hell it could probably be canon easy enough, although the OVA / manga / toy comics aren't exactly consistent with themselves so you'd probably need to pick one of them.

Krang is still the funniest part, seems like the OT to me.
