Your Profession
Hey Dromers,
I thought it'd be cool to see what everyone does for a living. We probably had a thread like this before, but I want to keep it updated, and I changed careers since I posted, probably. I'm the Systems Administrator for a flooring company. I do Help Desk stuff, manage servers and write web code for their Intranet. What about you? :) |
Interesting thread :)
Well 9-5 I work in a hardware store, it's kinda cool. I've worked there for many years and every day is different as I do a bit of everything. I'm pretty good at DIY now! ;) On my day off I run a stall selling my artwork, tshirts and pin badges so I kinda have two jobs at the moment. |
I'm what they call a Production Control Trainee for an Arkansas based department store chain. I work 3 12 hour days a week, 6pm to 6am (actually to get the full 40 hours, I go in at 4:40 every day.)
What we do is monitor the stores computer systems and fix any abnormally ending programs, or contact someone who can. At times it can be slow (most of the time, really.) but when things really start to blow up, it can be crazy. |
I work at the local library. I do various jobs there, some of the stuff I do is...
Clerk Work - Checking books out, checking books in, shelving books, helping patrons find books, helping patrons on the computer, etc. Custodial Work - Cleaning, Mowing, Shoveling Snow, Watering Plants, Taking care of the Boiler and Air Conditioner, etc. Outreach - Delivering books to the handicapped and elderly. The only stuff I don't really do is answer the phone, order new books and movies, and I don't do my boss's job, obviously. It's actually a really great place to work. I don't read very much myself, but just being in a library is really relaxing. Except if you're the only person there and it's pretty dark, then it's kind of spooky. Overall though, it's my favorite of all the jobs I've had. |
Freelance scenic designer, I design sets for theater. It's a fun yet hectic job, but I get to work from home a lot of the time, which means I can raise my 9 month old son while my wife works full time.
Some actors I've worked with over the years include; Peter Lockyer who starred in Phantom on Broadway, Ron Palillo a couple of times, and Alan Oppenheimer who voiced Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Mer-Man, Battlecat, and Falcor. In July I'm starting a new job as the Technical Director for a theater in CT, but I'll still do design work on the side. |
Dentist.
I fix peoples teeth :) |
I'm an auditor.
|
I make music. I'm currently taking classes and piano lessons to further reach my goal of becoming an composer/producer, preferably video game music.

I work at a gym (technically 3 gyms all part of the same franchise) as a personal trainer and fitness consultant. I do a little of everything that needs to be done, from marketing and membership sales to light custodial and maintenance, all of which gets kind of tedious, but on the good side of it I provide physical assessment evaluations, design exercise programs for people, and work with them one-on-one to ensure safety and results. The training side of things more than makes up the nonsense I have to deal with on the sales/consultant side of things. I work 6-7 days a week most of the time, which can be kind of a grind, but it's way better than what most people have to do for a living and I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather do. Even on a bad day, I usually can't wait to get to work, and usually stick around long past the time I'm paid to be there.
I much prefer the physical side of things to the sales side of things. At one of our locations the people living there are very argumentative in general, many of them don't care about anything except what they pay, and when you ask for fees for the services you provide some of them act like you're holding them at gunpoint. It's a tough crowd, and it's actually an area where the people tend to be rather wealthy, so I get a little put-off when a person making 6 digits a year tries to finagle a bunch of free training sessions, or free months on their gym membership, as if *I* don't have to eat or anything. But I can deal with that, because I work with so many motivated, hard-working people that a few stingy, semi-lazy types can't ruin it for me. I do get to meet and work with lots of interesting people, some of them for years at a time, and some of them even bring me gifts and cards around the holidays to say thanks for working with them. That's a huge difference from when I used to move furniture for a living, having straight-up rich people not even offer me a glass of water after I lugged their sleeper sofa up 3 flights of stairs in the middle of July. I hated that job because I knew I was doing something anybody could do, but now people tell me every day that I've helped them make their lives better, and I can't help but get off on that. Plus, I get to work out for free every day, which was my ulterior motive all along. :P That's what pays the bills, but I'm also a professional wrestler on weekends, mostly for thrills and supplemental income. I do call it my "second job", but it doesn't really cover much more than the expenses it takes to be involved. |
I'm a copywriter/editor. I currently work for a company that sells products targeted at the early education market. We produce printed catalogs throughout the year that I write copy for, as well as additional copy for our websites and various marketing materials.
I also do occasional freelance website design. |

Glass ceiling eat your heart out. :D Congrats, Katie.

Seriously though, I'm a licensed contractor. I opened my own business...I think two years ago now? It's incredibly fulfilling and I really enjoy it, but it's also tiring. Thankfully I can make my own hours now and kind of do what I want, so I can take some time off when I feel too worn out.

Seriously. I've been fortunate in my career for sure. Started off right out of highschool with no money for college. I was a teller. Found out they would pay for college. Earned a bachelors and a masters via work. Graduate promotion. Here I am. Hard hard work. Long hours. Totally worth it. |
Wow Katie, that's impressive, congratulations!
I'm currently a business analyst at a mobile network operator. |
I've been working at JFK airport for 3 years. The worst part about the job is the weather. In New York its either too damn hot outside or too damn cold, only a few weeks is it decent to be out there.
I've been thinking about working for the TSA as they stay indoors all day, but I have no idea what the starting salary is there. I assume they get paid decently....? |
I'm a recent graduate in Architectural Studies. Currently looking for work, its tough out here.
|
LOL KingGrimlock, you sound just like my boss (only minus the techie bit). I'm the custodian at my church, and my supervisor is the facilities manager. I actually have two cleaning jobs, and my job is to do just that - clean anything and everything that needs it. May not be the most glamorous job, but with my attention to detail, I'm pretty good at it, and I pretty much get left alone to do my thing which is how I prefer it.
I also have a bit of a side "business" making and selling pins made out of craft foam at local conventions. I only do it maybe three times a year, but having a fun hobby that also pulls in some money is pretty nice. |
I am a test technician at an X-ray machine factory, been there 22 years. What we do almost exclusively (in the past decade) is manufacture ion chambers for OEM manufacturers. They're those square or rectangular things you see in the bucky of an X-ray machine, right in front of the X-ray film cassette. Their job is to make sure the patient doesn't get the wrong dose of X-rays from the generator tube.
My job is quality control, repairs (sometimes), and calibration. I'm amazed at how many of these things they sell, since they last typically ten years. |
I'm a document control manager for an engineering & construction management company. Currently I'm working on a 7-star hospital project.

Physics professor. The worst part are the students.
|
I work at a rafting outfitter, where I do pretty much everything. Whitewater raft guide, zipline tour guide, office staff, adventure park monitor. January and February were not lucrative months for me, but I eat pretty well the rest of the year.
I'm looking to get into Firefighting/EMS though. Gotta grow up eventually. |
wow, so many cooler jobs than mine, lol! oh well :P :ohwell:

Therapist about to have my masters in December. I use Cognitive Behavioral and Art Therapy, primarily with children.
It is really interesting to see what everyone does :) |
It's cool to see people who have been on this forum forever finish their degrees or change professions. I was going to be in the Physics world, but it didn't work out for me so I decided to do what I loved since I was very little: work with technology. It's been great. :)

Sales advisor for a large carpet retailer. Yep, I sell people carpets, vinyl & laminate flooring for a living. Not what I wanted in life, I'm not a fan of being a 'salesman', the hours are crap, but its decent money and I need money to feed my family! Am on the lookout for other work, preferably office based, mon-fri, cos at the moment i'm 6 days a week, and work weekends...

F*ck yeah unemployment!

I currently don't have a profession at the moment, but I do help my dad out with various jobs when he needs me to such as stacking wood, picking up tree limbs, or anything else he feels I can do. He knows I can't do everything, but he's happy with what I can do, and I'm only too happy to help out when he needs it. I think that makes him happy knowing that I'm willing to help him with what I can.
But if I do get a job, I would prefer a work at home job where I don't have to have my parents drive me around. I tried getting a tutoring job last year, but that didn't work out. I'm going to try for it again very soon though as I really think it would be the best job and would be suitable for my degree. So, we'll see how things go. |
I have several jobs. One of them is being a small business owner. I currently have an educational publishing business that is geared towards the home school market. However, the material can possibly work for in-school teacher and informal educators. I try to work with all grades and subjects as well. On the weekends and for special events, I volunteer at the local science museums. There, I work in the Life Science Lab which has animals. In the Life Science, I am an animal caretaker and a Master Volunteer which means that I am radio trained and can run the lab without my supervisor. Also, I train the new Life Science volunteers on the animals and procedures. On top of this, I work in the Energy and Environment department where I do environmental demos. Sometimes I work behind the scenes such as maintaining the museum's database. My third job is a high school/college tutor. At times, I take classes to further my knowledge for my jobs.
Busy gal, huh? ;) |
Lessee... I graduated with my creative writing degree, and did some graduate school-type work with Graphic Design.
Now, I do telephone and written correspondence with the public for the US Government.((Gotta keep it super vague...)) I've also helped with design feedback and content ideas for the Department of state. And on the weekends, I am a cantor/choir master for my church, and I do the occasional graphic design projects for various purposes. |
