What motive does Shredder have that we DON'T know about yet?
Am I the only one who thinks there must be more to the story than just "I had a crush on my best friend's wife, so, in a fit of jealousy, I torched their house, got badly burned by my own fault, kidnapped their daughter, then poisoned her mind against her actual father for the following decade and a half or so"? O_o His 'revenge' seems a scoch overkill IMO.

Wrong series guy

No, I don't think there's any more to Shredder's story than that, but I actually like how it's played out thus far. There's a lot more potential for this feud in future seasons, and we all know it's far from over from that last fight.
|
I'm sure eventually he'll have world domination on his mind.
|
Pretty much what Cybercubed said, especially when he's directly working with the Kraang. There might be more to the story though, only time will tell.

If you think that's overkill, you've probably never danced around with love too much. It can drive you insane.

I'm sure there's a little more to it. As shown in "Turtle Temper", it was a long build up to Saki's breaking point when he finally attacked Yoshi.
But, at his root, Shredder does seem to be a jealous punk. |
I was wondering if there was more to it also, but admittedly I'm not convinced this is the case. I'd be interested if they did decide to add a bit more to the story, but I won't be disappointed if they don't.

It's a revenge story. There are often not too much more depth added to character fueled by rage and focused on revenge.
BUT... I would like to know what happened in that time for Saki to become Shredder and what we was doing in Japan before establishing base in New York after that news report in the first episode. What was he up to as Shredder before? |

How should we know?
Come on gobo, you knew someone was gonna go there? |
Never underestimate the power of...well...

I am curious to know why Hamato Yoshi has the name Splinter. For Shredder was referring to him as that in the series long before he found out he was a rat.

For the show so far, I think there hasn't been an explanation for his facial scar yet.

I have enjoyed Shredder's one track mind up until this point, I'm hoping that there isn't some cliché plot for world domination in his plans.
Splinter had said during their fight that if Shredder succeeds in Killing him, he'll have nothing. I believe Shredder just wants to Kill Splinter out of a combination of revenge, and to prove that he's always been better than him. With that and the satisfaction that he gets to raise his enemies daughter to hate her true Father. (He Might also want to off the Turtles, In order to make Splinter just a little more miserable.) It's a pretty Good Motive already. Adding too much would only dilute it. |
Here's what I want to know. Did Shredder know the Kraang's plan involves making the earth uninhabitable to humans when he decided to work with them? Is he so obsessed with wiping out Splinter and the Turtles that he's willing to knowingly aid creatures who are working to essentially cause the extinction of all life on the planet in order to do so?

I think it could go either way. He may know but doesn't have a single damn to give or he doesn't and we may have an epic scene of Shredder kicking Kraang ass when he finds out. You'd have the Foot and the Turtles working against the Kraang while simultaneously being at each other's throats. I just can't see Shredder forming an Enemy of my enemy is my friend kind of team up with the Turtles. His hatred wouldn't allow it. I think it's more likely that Shredder knows what the Kraang are up to but either he doesn't care or he plans to turn on the Kraang when Splinter and the Turtles are dead.

I dont understand most of what was posted above...
But I think this shows the depth of Shredder's revenge, that he's willing to destroy the planet. Screw world domination and control over it! Just blow the damn thing up! THAT'LL be sure to rid him of Splinter and his adopted turtle sons. And like all Revenge stories... once revenge has been attained, then what? That person's entire life was consumed for hate of another to the point where it dictated their life. Once that person is gone, there is nothing left for the individual. If Shredder were to work with the Krang and destroy the planet, it's not like we'll see Shredder The Space Explorer! Free to explore infinity and beyond! The Krang would probably do away with him, keep him as a trophy, do experiments on him as the last living human, etc. Quote:

So I really like where Shredder is going here, as Gin as posted. It's kinda "Old Boy" in a way. Very dark and twisted. It's all about revenge over the love of a woman. Who can't relate to that? (other than gay men...) I'll be very disappointed if Nick doesn't make Karai into Miwa... but I believe they are setting her up. |
True, but in order for a simple motivation to be effective, you have to have a dimensional and developed characters.
|
Oh I'm not complaining about Shredder. I think what he currently has is good. I love the idea he raised his enemies kid to hate and attack him without knowing the truth. That is so... amazing to do, especially in a "kids show".
I'm just saying, if anymore depth was given to Shredder, it could ruin the character. I'm all about character development but dont over complicate things. Let it naturally grow. |
Oh, I wish I could believe there was one. As is now, though, I don't think there is, although I think its fairly likely that the writers will eventually invent one when they find it convenient to do so.
I really wish I knew what the creators thought processes were in developing the character. I get not wanting to be a generic would-be world conqueror, but making him so revenge-focused--to the point where he'd doom the planet for a chance to get back at Yoshi--just seems short-sighted, from a writing perspective. Given that we know he can't ever succeed, just what is there left to do with the character, that hasn't already been done? |
I like that the series hints at that Saki didn't start out as a bad guy. Maybe short tempered and a little rough around the edges, but not a bad guy to the bone like OT & 2K3 were.
|
I wouldn't mind finding out that Tang Shen was still alive and is a mutant now. i'm sure that would drive Shredder crazy knowing she survived all these years and is now mutated!
|
Or that Tang Shen somehow survived the fire without the mutation.
And, Ryan, it was revealed in the finale that Karai is Miwa. |
Besides revenge (which is obviously on his mind a lot), Shredder seems to be big into the whole criminal empire thing. We've seen him working with arms dealers and we know from conversations with Dogpound that the Purple Dragons criminal activities directly benefit the Foot. Taking into account his compound in Tokyo (and the fact he can afford a jet) he probably oversees a great deal of crime in Japan as well.

Heh,heh- the Yakuza FEARS him....
