UK Toy Fair TMNT Report

'Sup guys, I've just got back from the UK toy fair and saw a ton of awesome TMNT stuff, including upcoming Nick figures and pretty much the entire movie line! Sadly, I couldn't get any photos, but I did get a catalogue - 90% of the stuff in there's been seen before, but I'll get some scans up anyway tomorrow. I'm pretty exhausted (8 hours and 12 trains'll do that to ya), so forgive me if I ramble on...

Movie Line:

9 basic figures in this line - the 4 turtles, April, Splinter, Shredder, a Foot goon and Undercover Raph.

First, the Turtles - regardless of the merits of the movie designs, they look amazing. Fantastic sculpting, decent paints (I was told they were production samples, rather than prototypes) and great articulation - same as the basic Nick figures. They each had their signature weapons, but no other accessories. Undercover Raph wasn't great looking, just a big puffy trenchcoat, hat and a couple of turtle legs sticking out underneath. He only looked to have shoulder, neck & wrist joints.

Foot soldier & Shredder looked fantastic - I'll have to see the designs in "real life", but Shredder's design is great, very "techy" but still undeniably Shredder - a lot more classic looking than I expected. Both figures were packed with articulation, same as the turtles but I think there's ankle joints in there too.

Splinter I didn't get a good look at, but he was easily the weakest figure. Had to take a minute to work out who he was! April is in her jeans, boots & yellow coat, looked nothing like Megan Fox and had 5 POA - shoulders, hips & neck (maybe wrists, couldn't tell).

There's also deluxe 12" figures - one basic set of 4 turtles, one set with crappy action features that didn't seem to work properly...

The Fifth Turtle 01-23-2014 03:43 PM

Wow. I'm pumped to see these. If Discogod is giving high praises to these figures they must be pretty damn cool. We need pictures from somebody!!!!

Did the Mikey figure resemble the Halloween costume?

Discogod 01-23-2014 03:53 PM

Now, on to the Nick line...

Quite a bit of new stuff on show - everything made so far! You guys'll probably be most interested in waves 9 & 10 though...

Wave 9:

This consists of Slash, Razhar, Newtralizer and Splinter 2. Slash looked awesome, perfectly translated from the screen (even if he's a little undersized), apart from one small issue - his head's tiny. Like even smaller than the cartoon version. At first I thought he was missing it altogether, and it does mar what could have been one of the best figures of the line.

Newtralizer's paints have been simplified from the prototype, but he still looks pretty damned good.

Splinter is pretty much the same as the last version with a mask & armour. Fairly dull.

Razhar looked like a burnt turd. The figure wouldn't stay standing, and generally felt quite flimsy (again, these were production samples). The sculpt's decent, but what little paintwork there is really lets it down.

Wave 10:

This consists of the LARP turtles, Bebop & Rocksteady, Tiger Claw and Cyber Foot. No figures on display, just mock-ups using the show renders.

The LARP turtles look pretty goofy - Wizard Don, Elf Mike, I forget what the other 2 were dressed as. Apparently this is going to tie into the show (major spoiler for season 2 below!)

Spoiler:
The turtles are discovered, and driven out of New York. They flee into the mountains & woods, where they have to learn new skills in order to survive. Apparently these costumes will feature heavily.

Tiger Claw looked like a generic tiger dude. Think he had trousers on. I dunno, he was right at the back.

Cyber Foot looked pretty neat, one hand was a gun, the other a massive buzzsaw.

Bebop & Rocksteady were my favourite reveals. They've been given a fairly major update, but they're still instantly recognizable. They look a lot meaner, more feral and "tribal", with markings over their bodies. Bebop still has his signature mohawk & shades, Rocksteady his camo pants. I think you guys will be very divided on them, but I loved them.

The best thing I saw?

Motherfudgin' BLIMP! Yup, there's going to be a new Turtle Blimp! It's a lot bigger than the old one - I was told 8 figures could fit on the glider. The one I saw was just a prototype, but it looked amazing...

Blossombrooks 01-23-2014 03:58 PM

Wow! That all sounds promising, Blimp? Shut up and take my money. :D

I totally forgot to actually describe the figures, didn't I? Well, it's been a long day...

Yup, the halloween costume's pretty much dead on. The turtles are bigger and bulkier, but not too drastically. The faces are more human, mostly in the shape of the mouths, but they still look like our beloved reptiles. Yes, they have lips & nostrils.

The actual movie designs I do not like at all. There's a lot of armour, most of which makes sense, but the general vibe I got was "Next Mutation on steroids". I did think it a shame that these could well be the best Playmates figures, based on sculpt and articulation, but the designs are so insipid...

The Fifth Turtle 01-23-2014 03:59 PM

Holy ****! Blimp!? Bebop and Rocksteady!? The info in the spoiler !?!?!?! A glimer of hope for the new movie!?!?

Mind blow.

Discogod 01-23-2014 04:04 PM

Oh, one last thing (there's probably more I've forgotten) - there's some new 12" turtles coming out, electronic & interactive. They'll actually talk to each other! Had a lot of fun playing around with those...

909 Turtle Fan 01-23-2014 04:12 PM

Man I can't wait to see all these new figs! Thanks for the info Disco :tgrin:

Powder 01-23-2014 04:12 PM

Discogod 01-23-2014 04:18 PM

No, I didn't take any pics. Didn't dare to, the Flair booth was the first I visited and didn't want to run the risk of getting thrown out of the show.

Nice

Glad to get a new report and it'll be interesting to see what's in the catalog. It's a small glimmer of hope. But I'm sure itll be crushed again soon.

Redeemer 01-23-2014 04:45 PM

One question OP
ARE THE FACES F****** HUMANOID?????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????

Derrico13 01-23-2014 04:54 PM

It sound like we are going to get some good stuff - thanks for the information, Discogod!

punksraven 01-23-2014 05:05 PM

Thank you for the report. I'm still cautiously optomistic about the movie, despite seeing the Mikey design. No doubt though, the toys will be fun.

VERY excited for the new bebop and rocksteady and the BLIMP!! Can't contain how happy I am about that!

Quick question though. The movie figures, are they the same size as the Nick toon ones, or are they a different scale?

FLAduranie 01-23-2014 05:14 PM

OMG!!! I Can't wait to see them all!!!!!

Oculus Orbus 01-23-2014 05:34 PM

Thank you Discogod for taking the time to describe all of this. I'm excites to see Bebop & Rocksteady, never really liked them in the OT, but Nick could make them work.

Colonel Schrader 01-23-2014 05:53 PM

Huge thanks for this. very nice of you to go and get a report for us! can't wait to see the figs at NY Toy Fair

First great news of the year, and this bodes well on sustaining the Nick series and having a great promotion for the movie. IMO while the NY Toy Fair may be the most famous and popular, this UK Toy Fair IMO is the more important one since it comes first and has often has just as good interviews. I prefer the more tribal Bebop/Rocksteady since it can suggest that they are more competent as opposed to the dulled down street look. Did the Nick Blimp have any logo on it much like the classic Turtle Blimps?

NinjaPug 01-23-2014 06:29 PM

Fantastic report. That all sounds great. Thanks for posting.

ProactiveMan 01-23-2014 07:52 PM

You made my day. I'll dream of Bebop and Rocksteady tonight.

raph27 01-23-2014 07:52 PM

Thank you for the news!
So. Rahzar sounds like a no-buy.
However, MUST get Bebop and Rocksteady. And Blimp.
B&R figs saves me $50 so I don't have to buy their CC figures.
Kinda angry at Playmates for never giving April decent articulation. Was really hoping for updated Nick April this year. Speaking of updates, what did Splinter have for articulation?

NinjaMan 01-23-2014 08:21 PM

Thanks for the info did Bebop and Rocksteady have their classic gear?

CyberCubed 01-23-2014 08:34 PM

I hate the fact that Bebop and Rocksteady are now tribal feral animals instead of being human street punks. Damn.

Zachatello00 01-23-2014 08:57 PM

What's the most exciting, that Bebop and Rocksteady are in, that we get a new blimp, or that April looks nothing like Megan Fox? Choices, choices...

Rukitron 01-23-2014 09:17 PM

Don't leave us hanging, please doodle some pics so we get an idea. That pic of the movie Mikey halloween costume left a bad taste in my mouth.

I did my best. It's not 100% accurate but it's a pretty decent representation of the design. He's kneeling 'cause I'm too lazy to do a full body thing right now.

psychturtle 01-23-2014 09:51 PM

That's actually not too bad. I could live with that. Awesome as always, powder

I'm surprised they didn't show the other three 1990 Henson Turtles. Makes you wonder if they're still going with it.

With nick based R&B on the way in the near future, I might pass the classics R&B, was gonna pose them with the Nick turtles anyways.

Jester 01-24-2014 02:45 AM

Sweet mercy, tmntmikey23, you're signature is freakin' HUGE!

Discogod 01-24-2014 03:44 AM

OK, to answer a few questions brought up in this thread...

The movie figures are the same scale as the Nick figures, or at least they looked to be. The movie stuff was in a separate room from the regular Nick stuff (I basically got to see the movie figures for about 3 minutes, they were more interested in pushing the various role-play items). Don't know what articulation movie Splinter had, looked like neck, shoulders & wrists but I couldn't get close enough to have a good look.

Turtle Blimp didn't have a logo, the balloon part had a turtle shell design, but like I say, it was just a rough prototype.

Bebop & Rocksteady didn't have any gear - they were basically cardboard cut-outs. Although they're more feral-looking, they still looked like themselves - Bebop had his black pants, red vest & shades, Rocksteady had his camo pants.

No new Classics on display, just the 'toon turtles and Bebop & Rocksteady. The movie Classics weren't out 'cause they're going to be a retailer-exclusive (they wouldn't tell me which retailer, but I have a feeling it's Toys R Us).
