Official Episode Discussion S2 #10 "Fungus Humungous"
And so the onslaught of loose mutagen canisters continues! Looks like the mutagen didn't just affect the squirrels in NYC. It looks like the stuff's going to climb the food chain from the bottom up, starting with the simpler 'critters' and eventually hitting some higher life forms. Mushrooms can have a devastating effect if you're not careful. They can be poisonous or hallucinogenic. Some can kill you if you just touch it. Don't forget those fat pufferballs that throw spores in the air if you step on them. Mushrooms grow from an underground network called mycelium, which can grow to HUGE Sizes. I don't particularly wanna see a 1500 acre mushroom popping up through the sewer grates. Give a mushroom a giant sewer system to grow in, some mutagen and an evil agenda, and you've got yourself a major problem. This thing could grow and overtake the city in a relatively short amount of time. With some hallucinogenic properties, it could easily incapacitate potential threats with illusions of their greatest fears or nightmarish visions. You don't know what's real or fantasy, and next thing you know, you go down the drain to oblivion. Or New Jersey... Hope the weather's good where you are! Stay Tuned! |
LOL what a freaky episode!
|
Mushroom dance scene was really trippy :teek:
|
I smiled and refrained from laughing during that one scene.
Right after watching my least favorite part....:ohwell: |
Decent Episode, and Enter obvious Drug use in 3.....2.....1...
|
Gotta admit, Leo was pretty dang awesome.
|
Reminded me of the Darkness within from the 03 series in a way.
|
Really fun & funny episode, it's in the Top 5 this season in my book

I think that came to most of everybody's mind when the synopsis for this episode came out. Though I wasn't expecting this episode to be as dark as Darkness Within, since what it got away with is hard to top for something like this show. |
I loved it, pretty creepy episode.
|
The graphics really impressed me, particularly the CG backgrounds.
It looks like the animation was better in this ep than usual. |
The animation and the jokes were the best of the episode to me.
Too bad we didn't get a preview of Metalhead Rewired at the end. |
I can't remember, was Mikey really that scared of the Squirrelnoids back in their episode? I don't remember him being any more frightened by them than the other Turtles. Mikey's fear felt the most forced of all the others.
|
Nice reference to Super Mario Bros by Mikey, complete with 8-bit style graphics. I also like how the sewers are more realistically dark in this version. In the OT and to a lesser degree 4kids, the sewers always seemed to have false lights hidden behind the walls. I also feel that Nick seems to be making this show lately to scare younger kids more often, especially the last two episodes (I myself got a bit startled at times watching today's episode).
|
That def made me giggle... someones having a good time making this show!!!
|
Probably my favorite episode of the season with all the trippy hallucinations.

Really liked the episode.
-Casey is finally a part of the group -actually like the Donnie Casey interaction -seeing all the different fears -Leo was badass |
-Leo was awesome
-Groan at Don/Casey arguement -Boo at what Donnie's fear revolved around -Funny mushroom dance sequence is funny -Leo was awesome -Ending was amusing -Did I mention Leo was awesome? In short, I liked this episode a lot. |
Wow it was Great, Intence and crazy episode, more intence than Slash and Destroy.
Fears Leo's fear is losing his brothers and failing as a leader (We knew anyway) Raph's fear is cockroaches (which we knew anyway) Donny's fear is April hating him Mikey's fear is the Squirrelanoids (I was surprised that was his fear) April's fear is Bats Casey's fear is Rats (which we knew anyway) Moments Leo was awsome More Casey and being more part of the team Donny and Casey don't seem to like each other and their rivalry over April has started, I hope it doesn't get too much. It was cool seeing Leo and Splinter meditating together and glowing too and then again later on when Leo was fighting Fungus Humungous. Mikey hugging Donny was cute I don't get the dancing fungus bit, what was the point in it. It did look like a reference from the Disney movie Fantasia I love the visual effects in this episode I wonder if Casey bumped into Splinter before in the episode I Monster because he was seeing (his fear) a big rat with red eyes. Funny moments Mikey hugging and wiping his face with a rat. Super Mikey brother's lol. Mikey trying to calm Raph down and then later hugging him and Raph throws up thinking he was being hugged by a cockraoch and licking him. Donnie seeing (his fear) 3 April's kissing Casey but were rats in Casey's fear. Dark/Gutsy moments Was pretty gutsy to use mushrooms/fungus to spray toxins all over them and make them hallucinate as we know what some type of mushrooms can do when eaten. Raph trying to kill his brothers when his fear took over him . Raph and Mikey Hallucinating and fighting each other Raphs fear when Mikey's head falls off and all the cockroaches flew out of his body. Did anyone think it looked like the fear wanted Leo to attempt Seppuku when Leo briefly given up and his sword appeared. |
Insert Obvious Drug Use / LSD Joke here.....
Good Episode, Loved getting to see more of Leo being a bad ass. Though I could have done without the weird interpretive mushroom dance, the overuse of anime speedlines, and the gross out shots courtesy of the squirrelanoids. Also, was Leo levitating when reflected that beam of sunlight ? 8 out of10

"Fungus." "Language. There's a lady present."
"Super Mikey Brothers." 1UP all round. "I heard in the original Japanese version..." <--- That's gotta be a pass at the super Asian Ninja Robot Turtles version. "That's a cartoon myth." They got the Nutcracker into a kid's cartoon. I don't know how but they did it. "Where's the love? It's right here between my arms." Leo and Splinter having the heart to hearts. Wow. I am so much closer to liking Leo now. Twerking 'shroom. "BREATHE WITH MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!" Mikey's fear was squirrelanoids. Not sure how I feel about that. Sure it was a traumatic experience but not more so than any of the other villains/creatures I'd say. But then again, I'm not inside Mikey's head. |
This episode was pretty trippy in some parts. Haha. I thought it was a fun episide though. :D but the part where it showed Donnie's fear and it looked like April stabbed him, i almost freaked out. Then the part with the movement from the nutcracker suite that was playing and the mushrooms were dancing. O-o just.. Wow. XD
|
I was a bit surprised to see Mikey's fear was the Squirreloids, but after thinking back on that episode, it does make some sense. As funny as a world without pizza would've been, it admittedly would've clashed with the somewhat serious tone of this episode.
|
Good creepy episode. I liked seeing Casey hanging with the gang. I can't get enough of his character. Best version of Casey ever IMO. Great episode for Leo and show why he is fit to lead. Reminded me of the Darkness within 03 episode in a way.

Flippin loved this episode!
Pros Leo was freakin bad ass More Leo / Splinter moments, I really adore this father son type relationship. Casey bonding more with the the gang Casey's fear, cracked me up so hard  Animation Cons Love triangle starting too soon, how much interactions has Casey had with April so far? I would have liked it to happen a couple of more episodes later, develop a friendship than lean more into romance with Donnie getting more and more jealous. I don't want a love triangle but it feels too fast now, though I do hope it doesn't take up too much time and ends fast. Donnie's fear, I know it was for comedy and all but I was kind of hoping it wouldn't have been that LOL. Teen hormones above family eh? Well  Every thing else was pretty solid, though of all villains Mikey is afraid of that's it? Sorry Shredder, you can't seem to frighten Mikey more than those guy's can :P |
Quote:
Thing About the love triangle is that, while yeah Casey likes April, he isn't showing it yet. He's still seems like just a friend to her. When Donnie and Casey had their little interaction, Donnie was upset that Casey lost April, and Casey just got into it cause Donnie was blaming him for it. Honestly did not mind their argument. Donnie's fear is a different story. |
So no one's gonna mention the AWESOME Captain Ryan Cameo?! :)
It was nice to see him one last time. :D |
To me this is the Fantasia of all TMNT episodes so far, since it seemingly involves imagination within imagination that provides some cool changes of view as each scene progresses. It almost feels like "was that really a dream?" Obviously this was an episodic plot (Though clearly takes place no earlier than the end of The Good, The Bad, and the Casey Jones), and to me the defining quote is what Splinter said to Leo "A good leader must risk losing his greatest allies". Great use of the dark sewers to provide the fear factor, and the different monsters/facial expressions provided by different characters' viewpoints makes this a nice episode to watch again even if you have little knowledge of the overall tone of the series. Great fourth-wall by Don about the cartoon myth.
Overall: 8/10 |
It's an okay episode nothing much. The fungus isn't really threatening I feel. :)
Donnie's fear is hilarious though. Spoiler:
I gotta say, the cockroaches look more gross than ever. Props to whoever did them. :D |
Oh man, I couldn't eat after that one, those cocroachs are so realistic

whoa that was....trippy okay where to begin...??
- When Splinter and Leo were glowing XD I didn't know what was going on! I thought they were gonna start summoning stuff or something. -Didn't really feel Mikey's fear......felt a littttle forced....but hey, those squirrelanoids were creepy! and they almost killed him so...I'll let that one slide. -dang Don....already being mean to Casey? Casey has no idea what's going on. -when Mikey hugged Raph when Raph was still seeing roaches...omg I almost died laughing  Mikey was just in a hugging mood this episode. - trippy...Fantasia scene...okay XD - Don's fear, KNEW IT. Of course it was about April..... |
See, this is how to do a, "mutant of the week" type episode. They made it so unique and different from the others that you didn't even realize you were watching another mutant filler.
More episodes like this, and less like the ones about the Cockroach and Spiderbitez, please. |
Haven't watched this episode yet, but sounds like Don's greatest fear IS about losing April? Instead of his family? And likewise...Raph's is freaking cockroaches? Wow. That's pathetic. Way to give Leo the only real meaning in his fear. And they're already pushing the DonxCasey rivalry? I think I'm almost done watching this show, and might just catch the ones that show actual promise (like Slash and Destroy). Super disappointed.
