Has Guardians of the Galaxy already won August

The trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy was released this week, and WOW! My facebook feed was exploding with the people sharing the trailer. People who had no idea what it was until the trailer was released were talking about it too.

The fact that the trailer was launched on Jimmy Kimmel also brought in a huge hype factor.

So with all that...

Did Guardians of the Galaxy just win the month of August, and is this another nail in the TMNT 2014 movie coffin?

CyberCubed 02-20-2014 11:24 AM

I hope so. This movie will hopefully kill the TMNT movie dead .

Never have I wanted a TMNT property to bomb so bad.

Candy Kappa 02-20-2014 11:28 AM

Afraid it's a big possibility that Guardians will outshine TMNT.

As much as I negatively critique what we've seen as of this date, I still hope the movie will reel in enough to make more stuff that I can enjoy. Just what the TF movies did.

turtlefanforever 02-20-2014 11:39 AM

No

I mean we haven't even had a tmnt trailer. It could bring a big boom for sure, you can't really say until August, especially not until the tmnt trailer. But it could in the end and I think it's a big possibility.

You should hope Turtles bombs so the next movie is a proper reboot.

TrickOrTreater 02-20-2014 11:48 AM

It's definitely a possibility.

A lot of positive buzz about this new trailer(and well earned, it looks awesome).

TMNT's main competition stepped up to the plate and hit a home run.

It's their move to give us something. Anything.

which will what, possibly take a decade?

I'm a patient person, but really. This movie isn't for me, never will be with it's direction. And I'm okay with it cause we still have decent quality stuff.

TMNT is cooler than MOTU 02-20-2014 12:35 PM

It's certainly possibly. Granted, social media chatter doesn't always translate into box office $$$, but at the very least, it has people talking and most of what is being said is very positive.

chrisdude 02-20-2014 12:46 PM

I wish I got it. I don't get it. I watched the trailer. It looked like fun. But I don't know what clicked with everyone. It didn't even show what the story is about.

The Boston Ninja Turtle 02-20-2014 12:46 PM

wow you new fans really are an impatient bunch arnt you...cant even wait a couple months

impatience among fans isn't the issue at hand. The lack of marketing is eerie, especially when a Marvel movie got so much.

Because it was a teaser. Teasers don't show story.

Trailers show story.

TigerClaw 02-20-2014 01:33 PM

Teasers only show the imagery to wet people's appetite, When the 2nd trailer comes out, It'll focus more on Story. I have a feeling the Teaser Trailer for TMNT will be just that. Lots of flashes of images and and maybe show the Turtles doing something, Perhaps show them doing a Fighting Stance.

It's not about new fans or impatience or whatever ******** you want to call it.

It's about marketing. Specifically marketing for big budget comic book type movies.

Movies like TMNT.

Movies like this get promo material sometimes a year to years in advance. That's usual a teaser poster or character teaser images. TMNT hasn't gotten that.

A year to about 6 months from release it gets a teaser trailer. TMNT hasn't gotten that.

Any of it. It's 5 months before release and we only just now know what the stars of the freaking movie look like because of an accidental leak of a children's halloween costume, slightly blurry leaked shots of some production maquettes, a leaked shot of a merchandise promo image and some action figures.

THAT'S UNUSUAL.

chrisdude 02-20-2014 01:37 PM

I wasn't questioning why the story wasn't revealed. Only why people care about movies without knowing what they're about.

Because it looks like fun?

Because they're a fan of the comic book/characters?

Donatello19 02-20-2014 01:44 PM

Am I the only one who has no idea what GOTG is?

It's a Marvel space comic book.

Plasticplayhouse 02-20-2014 01:46 PM

it looks pretty good, but i wouldnt count it as #1 yet. the GotG comic didnt do as strong as they hoped. i liked it and i think it will translate well into a movie, but the general mavel fanbase didnt seem to grab onto it much.

plastroncafe 02-20-2014 01:46 PM

We'll know for sure if everything else due out in August gets rescheduled.

Oh if they push it back again that's just a guarantee that the studio has zero faith in the movie and are just trying to cut their losses as much as possible.

Apples and oranges, really. Iron Man wasn't really considered an A-list superhero character until the movie was a massive success. It's hard to say what will strike a chord with a mainstream audience. Sometimes one really good/fun movie is all it takes for a franchise to catch fire.

Exactly. Iron Man was no where near as popular as say Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc.

Now, he's a household name.

TheSkeletonMan939 02-20-2014 02:49 PM

TMNT will absolutely flop. Just compare it to the new RoboCop - it's a reboot that I personally don't think received a lot of marketing, and it came out right near The Lego Movie, which was a huuuuge mistake. According to Wikipedia it cost $130 million to make, but has made only $100 million. I think that's what you'd consider a box office 'flop'.

Right now anything with Marvel's name attached is gold - the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man, and the X-Men are all very profitable franchises for their respective film companies. That's why we're getting a freaking ANT-MAN movie very soon - even just five years ago you would have been a laughingstock among your comic book nerd friends if you had predicted that. There are even plans for a Dr. Strange movie.

If Paramount's wise, they'll change the release date so it's not just one weekend after GotG - maybe the loss won't be as bad then.

Candy Kappa 02-20-2014 03:01 PM

Too bad about Robocop. I haven't seen the movie yet myself. But i loved the trailer, the Omnicorp website and commercials

It's actually worse than that - it's made about $100 million total in the worldwide box office, but only $33 million of that is from the domestic market. Studios generally get less pure profit from the international market than they do from the domestic (there are regional and local dealers and exhibitors that take their cut as well), so the number we're seeing isn't necessarily an accurate measurement of how much the studio is taking in. It's probably much less.

Coola Yagami 02-20-2014 03:59 PM

The funny part is people acting like tmnt is even supposed to be any kind of completion for GTOG. Dream on. IMO they should have released the movie at a time when a big blockbuster wasn't on the horizon. Between GOTG, Spider-Man 2 and their very own Transformers 4, this crapped-on movie really has no place to go.

psychturtle 02-20-2014 04:20 PM

I blame heavy turtle appearance edits.

turtlefanforever 02-20-2014 04:23 PM

Yeah it's doomed

The month before it has some good ones. Another step up movie which has a following another planes movie, another planet of the apes then in that month there is GOTG, sin city, the expendables 3, and the giver which was a popular book but I hated it.

Galactus 02-20-2014 04:32 PM

I think they won it the moment Michael Bay said this...

Irony being most of the Guardians are legit aliens...:)

Zulithe 02-20-2014 04:37 PM

i'll probably see it like, twice. so yeah i think so

Coola Yagami 02-20-2014 04:41 PM

Same for me. Got more than enough action or comic fans to watch it with multiple times. I have to find someone to drag to see the tmnt one with me though.

it wasn't bad because opr marketing its bad because there is next to no ties to the original was was popular for specific reasons.

That too. No one wanted to see a RoboCop reboot made.

Candy Kappa 02-20-2014 05:00 PM

I wonder if Robocop would have done better being a sequel, in the vein of John Rambo and Die Hard 4.0.

i mean i think it would have been cool i think the should have kept it rated R and used more of the modern symbology

Rambo Was great Die hard no so much. but i dont think it would have worked. The movie you talked about has had an average amount of movie made through out the years, where as Robocop had just those run of movie and nothing as recent as the others you listed

bridgegrn 02-20-2014 05:09 PM

I feel like the Turtles need something big to get some decent buzz going around it. Not only was the GOTG trailer fun and interesting but it's a Marvel movie. Marvel films are pretty much all big event movies now and considering one of the cool aspects is the fact that they all tie in to each other in one way or another GOTG has a significant edge over TMNT. I feel like we'll get a TMNT trailer very soon, or some kind of official release.

Cure 02-20-2014 05:10 PM

Whoooooo caaaaaaaares. I don't see why everything has to be a competition between non-participants. I'll watch both and be content.
