Nick Turtles Finally Completed w/Weapons

It's been well over a year since I painted the turtles (you can view the pics without the weapons here: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/sho...2&postcount=25), but I kept having issues with the paint on the weapons rubbing off. So, I put them on the back burner, and finally got around to finishing them.

I also darkened the purple on Donatello.

Love what you did with the skin tone.
I also had problems with the paint rubbing off on the weapons when I did mine. End up using markers and sealing them and then just pretty much leaving them alone...for a very very long time. That seemed to work

Great color distinctions ! I especially like the more olive green on Donny. :D

slaysghosts 02-21-2014 12:38 AM

They look beautiful.

Great paint job! Seeing these awesome customizations makes me love these figures more and more. I like what you did with the shell. Great job!

I'm a big fan of the skin tones the original toys had, and just had to paint these figs using them.

Yeah, I tried sealing them after painting them, but it didn't work :(. So, I had to coat them with super glue. Not exactly what I wanted to do, but it worked.

I really appreciate the compliment, hitmonkey. After working on these for hours upon hours to get the skin tones I was happy with, doing dry-brushing and washes to bring out all the details in the sculpts, and trying to figure out a way to eliminate paint rub on the weapons, it's nice to know someone thinks so highly of the results of my work.

Thanks, Pagong! These figures really are awesome. I can't praise the sculpts enough. Painting them really helps bring out all the details in the sculpts that you don't really get with the factory paint job. The person that sculpted these really did an amazing job.

Out of all the repaints of the Nick turtles, these are by far my favourites. Love the colours used, love the smoothness, love that you didn't go overboard with washes... They're perfect.

I take this as an awesome compliment coming from someone of your caliber. Thanks, man!

Paint jobs look awesome. I think Mikey looks the best. The weapons look extra sweet. Never was a fan of swapping Leo and Don's head, but non the less, they all look great.

psychoandy 02-28-2014 11:52 AM

These look fantastic. I really love the color matching you did to the '88 line, and as Discogod said, I like that you didn't go overboard with the washes.

Excellent work. Be proud of these.

Thanks, for the kind words, guys!

OrokuYoshiFilms 03-02-2014 02:34 PM

Really great work! First customs I've ever seen that would actually be worth the ridiculous price I've seen some being sold for on eBay.

...I wonder what other head swaps would work for these turtles....

Yeah, I decided on a price that I wouldn't have a problem with letting them go at. I'm not really trying to sell them right away, but if they sell, cool. If they don't, no biggie. Though, I would come down on the price if someone wanted to do it through PayPal instead of ebay, since I wouldn't have to pay the ebay fees. Not to mention there's some wiggle room for what I would let them go for. Hence the "Best Offer" option.

I love these! Planning on doing the same thing myself. What do you use for paints? I have a ton of Citadel around from my 40K hobbying; I wanted to at least do some washes and paint the weapons.

Donatello - I used a custom mix of P3 Formula paints' Battledress Green and Beastial Brown, dry-brushed over a base coat of Testors' Model Master Acrylics Flat Black, and the first dry-brush layer was just straight up Battledress Green. I don't know the exact ratios used for the custom mix though. Just add a little bit of Beastial Brown to some Battledress Green until you get a murky brown-ish color. That's the best I can explain it. I discovered a close approximation to it is Testors' Model Master Acrylic Field Drab.

Leonardo - I laid a base coat of black. The first layer dry-brushed was Testors Model Master Acrylics Dark Green. I then dry-brushed over that layer with Testors Floquil Military line Dark Olive Green.

Raphael -- A base coat of black with P3 Formula Paint Iosan Green dry-brushed for the first layer of green, and then I mixed a light yellow (don't remember the exact color, but a Testors Model Master Acrylic color that is a light yellow that is flat should work) with the Iosan Green to get a lighter shade of green. Just add a little bit of yellow at a time to get the desired shade, as I don't remember the exact ratio.

Michelangelo - I laid a base coat of black, and then dry-brushed P3 Formula Paint Iosan Green on him. It takes several coats when dry-brushing to get the green to the point I did, but it's well worth it. He's the only one that I used one shade of green on.

I believe that covers all 4 of them. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

d3m01iti0n 03-12-2014 09:45 AM

Good mix up. Ive got a few different shades of Citadel green (I play Orks, MEAN AND GREEN :D ) but need a couple more to best match the cartoon colors. I did get chains hooked up to the chucks and kusarigama and mostly painted along with the sais. Pics soon!

raven6859 04-03-2014 12:27 AM

Amazing!!!!

rickwj324 04-23-2014 08:19 AM

I have a quick question for ya.... how do you attach the chains to the nunchuk sticks? I truly love the look of these turtles!!! Super awesome job!

Zarana-X 04-30-2014 12:23 PM

Incredible work. Your work never fails to impress.

Freeman 05-07-2014 04:39 PM

Excellent job highlighting the Playmentes models. Love how Don's bo turned out, very natural effect.
A good friend of mine plays and paints Warhammer, and I may comission him for these custom work. I felt in love with this set when the showed the protos, but then the figs in my shelf just don't look like that, so I realy want a customization like this one.
Keep it up!
