What species of turtle would you choose to depict the ninja turtles as?
Box turtles. There are a lot of breeds and sub species. So many different looks and varieties.

Sea turtles make the most sense... |

Apparently they're all red-eared sliders.

Red-Eared Sliders of course, that's what they are in Mirage and the First Live-Action trilogy.
I love turtles, I find them fascinating and cute, but among my favorites is the RES, so it works out fine by me :P |

Also in IDW they are sea turtles... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5gfGQOfJc_...%2Bturtles.jpg |
^Huh, I dunno if that's the artist's style but they do seem to be sea turtles. Kinda odd that the aquarium's environment is pretty fresh water turtle type (with ground earth, grass and leaves..), I thought it should be more sandy stuff, shells and corals, etc.
Not sure which issue that red eared slider was from though, I found it on tumblr with no reference link. |
IDW turtles being sea turtles, really is up to debate, as the tank is not suited for saltwater sea turtles, at all. As they live primarily in water, and only the females comes out of the sea to lay eggs on the beach. And it's internationally illegal to own sea turtles. And Eastman's sketches have the turtles depicted with feet instead of flippers, but they could be poorly drawn Pig-Nosed Turtles, which is a fresh water turtle that actually have true flippers.

Yup, turtles will pee on you if they feel threatened or stressed out with the situation they are in. |
Red-eared sliders 'cus it's canon. I hope later versions make it more obvious by giving them faint stripes like they had in Out of The Shadows.

I would keep walking when I used the bathroom too if I wouldn't get it on me why would they stay in the same place?

[Also I came into this thread specifically to post that image so thank you for beating me to the punch :V that said I can't remember what issue that was from arrrrgh] |
I'd imagine the Don pin-up is from The Blue Hole, tales of the TMNT #18. At least the pin-up is infront of that story in the Tales of the TMNT collected volume 1.

Yea I gotta admit as much as I love hearing Rob Paulsen portray Donnie these days, the way he's being depicted as a creeper just doesn't sit right with me. I also don't care much for certain moments where he points out some random fact we really didn't need to hear like how frost is produced.

If doing something else the Red-Eared Sliders, I'd probably chosen something like a Diamondback or maybe a Smiling Terrapin, whose are totes cute, and "ninja" in color
Or maybe as Japanese Pond Turtles. |
Any species that has at least three hexagonal shell plates on the central parts of their shell, since all TMNTs have been portrayed with that shape. For the live action version, tortises since its difficult to film underwater in these versions due to numerous issues and they all seem more realistic since tortises tend to be larger. For all other verisons, I'd prefer seawater over freshwater since the NYC sewers tend to be too salty for freshwater turtles to survive well. But if I'd choose a definitive species, it would be the Red-Eared Slider. With a greenish yellow shell, a hexagonal pattern, green head, and a red stripe behind the eyes (akin to Raphael/Mirage Turtles), its likely the most accurate turtle species that has gotten mutated.

Seriously, box turtles, if I recall, have a rather round upper shell, while our heroes tend to be flatter in all incarnations I've seen. And the video I found shows red-eared sliders as being agile (able to right themselves from being on their backs), so that would be my choice too. |

I would pick tortoises cause i like them more.
Don would be a Brown Tortoise cause his toy was brown. Mike would be an Elongated Tortoise cause they have cute light colored faces. Raph would be a redfoot tortoise cause.... they are red? And Leo would be a Herman's Tortoise cause those tortoise are boring like him. |
Wasn't it just Murphy who decided they were red-eared sliders? In Archie? And then in Tales Vol. 2? I'm not sure if anyone particularly official ever agreed with him... but the baby turtles never look like red-eared sliders.

Whaa? :teek: I thought Nick Donnie is the best version ever.
He doesn’t act like a doormat when being pressed by his brothers all the time. He yelled “Meathead!” at Raph and told Leo to “Be QUIET!” (when he’s disarming an alien bomb). He can get ruthless and serious. http://media.tumblr.com/3471ab7b1588...wrkco1_250.gif http://media.tumblr.com/6576afc08ad2...fioho1_400.gif And he’s capable of sass, even with the people that he fancies. http://media.tumblr.com/6810d5e229a1...fioho1_500.png He also makes the most adorable faces. http://media.tumblr.com/ad157b17dc30...fioho2_400.gif http://media.tumblr.com/60fce6611496...fioho3_500.png http://media.tumblr.com/571e343ebb15...fioho5_500.jpg http://media.tumblr.com/c94da6716662...fioho6_500.png http://media.tumblr.com/6b44196f2484...fioho7_500.png And his loud rants are always entertaining to watch. He's not all quiet and can be easily walked all over. :D But on topic, yeah red eared slider... |

This is probably the worst version of Donnie (For me) He's a dork, not a nerd, a dork. Whenever he yells i get reminded of Jar Jar and he is just as annoying He is waaaaay to competent, yeah other donnies where to but they at least tried to give some explanation, here he can hack into alien technology, build robots and million of other stuff without any problem. I hate his design to, he's tall and missing a tooth because he's a nerd, get it? Subtelty, what's that? Kids don't need to know what subtelty is in fact that's one of the bigest problems with the show it takes characters traits and HYPERCHARGES them.... |

That image confused me at first, until I realized that it was simply a very stylized artistic vision of young turtles doing turtle stuff. It's the artist's rendition of turtles, done in a very simple and minimalist style. (Plus, turtle feet are probably harder to draw than what the artist wanted to deal with, so he just made them look like flippers.) |
