New Kevin Eastman Interview

The TMNT site has posted part 1 of a new Kevin Eastman Interview that they have done, He talks about all things TMNT, the 30th Anniversary and the new movie.
http://tinyurl.com/kedb2mw

Here's the part he talks about the new TMNT movie
Quote:

What is your favorite Bruce Lee movie?

EASTMAN: FISTS OF FURY (1971). I love ENTER THE DRAGON (1973). I love David Carradine’s KUNG-FU (1972-75) television series. I also love animated martial arts. I’m a huge fan of Jet Li’s FIST OF LEGEND (1994). In fact, when I was approached by Jonathan Liebesman for the new NINJA TURTLES (2014) movie we talked about how he wanted to bring that big martial arts energy to it. I suggested that he take a look at FIST OF LEGEND because it doesn’t get any better. It’s a perfect martial arts movie and a tribute to one of my heroes Bruce Lee.
When ever they post part 2, It will have why Kevin thinks Turtles fans are unhappy with the new movie Turtles designs, among other TMNT stuff.

Looks like this interview came out today, too. I was about to post it, but why make another thread?

http://www.nuvo.net/indianapolis/int...nt?oid=2840039

Quote:

NUVO: You're working as a consultant on the new Turtles movie.

Eastman: When I originally started working on the movie with the producers, Scott Mednick and Galen Walker, we started about three years before we started working with Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes. So we developed quite a bit of work, and when Michael Bay brought on [director] Jonathan Liebesman - who actually called me last night for some input - we basically sat down and he [Liebesman] said, 'Look, I want to do the best Turtles movie ever. I want to do fight scenes that no one's ever seen before. I want to keep it true to the roots. I want to do something exciting and fresh and give it my own spin, but I also want it to be something the fans can relate to.'

When they brought me on as consultant, I got to throw in my two cents on the script, I did a number of designs; I even got to do a cameo in the film, getting to do my Stan Lee thing, which was kind of fun. I think these guys' hearts are in the right places, and they want to make the best Turtles movie they can make. I'm, for one, pretty excited. I know that they're in rough cut stage, so I look forward to going out and seeing what they've been doing, maybe over the next couple of weeks. But I've seen a lot of footage, and it's really fun, it's different and it's exciting, and I think some of the action stuff is going to be what hopefully blows the fans away. But at the same time, I want them to be the same Turtles that they've loved their whole life! (Laughs) It's been fun.
He also talks about the 30th anniversary issue and the Nick cartoon.

SwiftNinjaFox 05-28-2014 02:03 PM

I need to watch Fist of Legend in the next couple of days.

Radical Raph 05-28-2014 02:07 PM

Show us with a new trailer please!

HAHAHA yeah i just saw your twitter post this is a great interview as well.

Galactus 05-28-2014 02:42 PM

So he didn't really say anything we didn't know or address any of the worries. Just telling how everyone's hearts are in the right places, basicaly the same "it'll be good...honest" that we've gotten throughout.

Nice interview but on the subject of the movie Kevin really didn't offer anything reassuring.

^ This.

Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but Eastman really didn't address the problems people have against this movie.

Ramboraph4life aka Matt 05-28-2014 02:55 PM

"he wanted to bring that big martial arts energy"

"I want to do fight scenes that no one's ever seen before. I want to keep it true to the roots."

"I think some of the action stuff is going to be what hopefully blows the fans away."

Well, none of the Promotion has shown any hints of that 'martial arts energy', 'action that would blow fans away', or 'fight scenes that no one's ever seen before' (which by the way, how is that possible? I would guess that he means 'never seen in a Turtles movie' but that is certainly not how it was worded...).

And it might sound silly, but when one says 'True to the Roots', what does that necessarily mean? People here have said countless times that each incarnation of the Turtles is different...so if one says 'True to the roots', then what are those roots? The fact it has 4 Turtles, a rat named Splinter, and an April?

Perhaps I was too quick to talk. I assumed the two links posted were different parts of the same interview. I'll give some benefit of the doubt that he might chance directly addressing concerns we have even if in all likelihood it will be pretty much the same as the other interview.

Apparently he will address some of the fan-worries in the next part of the interview, which isn't out yet (to my knowledge)

pennydreadful 05-28-2014 05:16 PM

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that we definitely need to see some of these much-touted "martial arts" scenes that we keep hearing about in interviews... bring on the new trailer already!

TigerClaw 05-28-2014 05:28 PM

Its interesting that we hear stuff about the movie having martial arts like The Raid, And then hearing about Fist of Legends. With all this talk, Were all hoping for, The most Bad Ass martial arts ever seen on film.

I agree.. I think he has definitely talked about it with the team.. I remember when he said in an interview that if they didn't make it true to the Turtles they would get " F-ing murdered" lol. But it still seems that some don't understand what a NDA is and think that people like Eastman and other actors can come out and shoot their mouths off about details without getting in trouble. I understand that no matter WHAT he says he'll be called a big fat liar. So it doesn't even matter. What matters is what we see on August 8th. People around here have been saying how the marketing sucks and the trailers suck just because they don't get everything they want while "imo" simultaneously contradicting themselves.. Obviously they want more lol. If you watch a trailer and are finding yourself asking for more every single day then... I think the trailer did it's job :D

Here's the part he talks about the movie
Quote:

One of the things that is so great about you Kevin is how positive you’ve been…There’s so much negativity online about the coming of the new NINJA TURTLES movie. Why do you think people are so focused on the negative in regards to the new TURTLES movie?

EASTMAN: Well, it’s a scary thing. Going back to when I was growing up and reading comic books…There was always different art teams and different writers working on the comics that I loved. If you liked a particular artist or a writer and what they had done, then when you got the next issue, and someone else was filling in for them, it would really frustrate you. Peter and I only did the first 16 issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles together before we started having guest artists come in. When we would have guest artists come in they would provide us with different ideas and different interpretations and different looks for the Turtles. We would say, “Well, that’s not exactly how we do it, but that’s really cool.”

When we worked on the first animated Turtles series, we understood that the characters needed to appeal to six-year-old children. We went from producing a black-and-white comic book to a full color animated series. It was Peter who came up with the idea for each of the Turtles to wear different colored eye bandanas. We were now writing for a different audience but we’ve always tried to maintain the feel and integrity of the original characters that we created.

The Turtles have been changed in everything that has been made with them. From the 1990 live-action Steve Barron movie, to the IDW series, to the Nickelodeon animated television series…Each version of the Turtles have had their own look and feel. Some of the Turtles mythology was changed for some of the shows over the years, and that was scary as hell when we were approached with those ideas. When we agreed to those types of changes we were worried that the fans would crucify us. We’ve taken chances with those types of things over the years. But we’ve always been proud of the fact that the integrity, heart and soul of those characters has always been present in every Turtles incarnation that has come over the last 30 years.

That goes for the upcoming NINJA TURTLES movie as well?

EASTMAN: It’s the same approach. When they approached me about the new movie we had 30 years of ideas to look through. I think it’s important to give these new Turtles a different look and feel that sets them apart from what is being done with the Turtles on the Nickelodeon animated series. We wanted to make the Turtles as cool as possible while at the same time creating a new beast onto itself. The script is great for the new movie.

I used to laugh…Every time I would visit Ciro Nieli at the animation studio he would say, “Here comes Obi-Wan”. I would look at what everyone was doing there for the Nick animated series and I would be so blown away that it would make me so excited for what they were doing with the Turtles. It’s the same thing with the new NINJA TURTLES (2014) movie. When I first sat down with Jonthan Liebesman and Michael Bay…These aren’t guys who want to do a Turtles movie for the money. These are very creative guys and their heart is really in the right place with the Turtles. They really want to create good stuff. That’s the most important part of it. If you do good stuff, then hopefully the fans will come out to support it. People are uncomfortable with the look of the Turtles now, but I think they’ll like them once more is revealed. I’m really happy with how the Turtles turned out in the new movie.

Freaking awesome Dude i love these interviews great stuff

Ramboraph4life aka Matt 05-29-2014 01:11 PM

So really...it's just "yeah, there have been different stuff in the past. It's kinda scary. But once you see it, it's really cool. Trust us."

So it really doesn't answer anything. How about the questions people want to know? Like is it More of a Turtles movie, or is it more of a Humans movie ala The Transformers films?

And he just briefly mentions the looks...he just says "people are uncomfortable, but I think they'll like them once more revealed."

People aren't Uncomfortable. They just think that the Designs Look Awful. And the Looks are Already Revealed, Kevin...and a lot of folks think they look like Crap.

Candy Kappa 05-29-2014 01:16 PM

It's a nice interview, but it doesn't give us a lot new information. Nor any actual dwelling into the new designs.

But, I'd be very happy with the action, if it's closer to classic Martial Arts movies.

No. It really just means, TMNT has been tweaked or changed in EVERY incarnation at some point. It's evolution, it's versatility. He's telling whiny fan boys, attached to one version of the characters to get over yourself. If the co-creator is down with the changes, there isn't a reason for fans to be so outraged either.

Candy Kappa 05-29-2014 01:27 PM

yes, criticizing poor designs is being a whiny fan boy. It's nice to see individuals of the "positive" side don't lower themselves to name calling... Oh, wait. :P

SwiftNinjaFox 05-29-2014 01:57 PM

Y'know, despite the apprehension I have for the film and despite this sounding like anything concrete beyond "just wait and see" I'm at least happy to hear his enthusiasm for it and how he relates it to the changes that were scary in the past.

I'm still not sold and I still don't like the new look, but I'm still willing to give it a chance if they show me enough to convince me it will be a solid film.

I have to admit, I do appreciate Eastman's optimism for all things TMNT, though. I may not agree with it all the time, but I really do appreciate it.

The big difference to me is when you get a different art style in the comics, you're stuck with it a few months, maybe a year. When you get a style you don't like in films, you're stuck with it for about a decade. I still don't like Optimus Prime's movie design being so complicated, but I'm going to be seeing it for more than a decade.

You're right Chucker. How could we be so blind to evolution. We're all like TMNT creationists or something.

Nah, just think a lot of you guy's are irrational, and short sighted. Oh, and in specific cases, such as RamboRaph, Candy Kappa, Leo656, electric_sheep. Delusional as well. You guys make moutains out of mole hills over the stupidest reasons, can't see the forrest through the trees.

You know a big part of what irritates me about the Powers That Be with this movie? This attitude that all of the internet negativity is unwarranted - like we're all just being killjoys for the fun of it, and we're making a big deal over nothing and we should all just shut up.

Why couldn't they have had someone come out and say "You know what guys, the leaked script was crap, we went completely in the wrong creative direction with that one and we're glad that you all care enough about the Turtles to have this much of a strong reaction to it - we're going to make the best movie that we can for you."

Instead of just this high-handed, dismissive attitude of "we rewrote the script, now shut up and stop mentioning it and be happy with everything we give you cuz we know best." If they hadn't given us a reason to complain in the first place, there wouldn't be so much pre-existing skepticism towards the film. We have a legitimate right to be concerned.

This is the kind of antagonism that makes things escalate into thread-lockery. Please try to stop making your arguments personal. It's not fair that the rest of us can't enjoy the forums just because some of you can't stop feuding.

It is interesting to read Eastman's thoughts along side Laird's thoughts. With the former being far more invested in the TMNT franchise today than the latter.

One aspect I've grown to love about the Mirage TMNT is the vast variety of artists and stories. But the guest series of Vol. 1 was not all good. It had high points like Michael Zulli and Rick Veitch, but GOOD GOD nobody wanted to read Rich Hedden and Tom McWeeney's vision.

Sweet interview.. So glad we are getting what we are getting. I'm glad that they picked these guys for this movie. I'm glad that my turtles look awesome and that they're gonna kick some royal backside in this film. I watched the first 1990 film today and realized that it's definitely not a masterpiece. It's my favorite TMNT film.. but the fight scenes weren't all that impressive.. The foot barely fought back.. It took like 50 foot to take Raph down lol.. I cant wait to see some real fight scenes with the Foot actually fighting back and the turtles using their weapons. I can't wait to see the expression on their faces during conversations in the new lair. Which is the most amazing lair I have ever seen in a turtle film. Every time I watch the trailer I get chills. Just 69 days left :D What an awesome exciting time to be a Turtles fan. I know we'll get an entire trilogy with these Turtles. That means we get to see these Turtles in action for the rest of the decade :D Hell yea.

For most I'd say.

While I suppose the wait 'till I'm almost 40 to get something possibly better isn't horrible it seems like Bay is not letting go of Transformers, even bucking the recent trilogy trend so unless these movies don't perform well PD could have them for much longer.

Talk about a Faustian bargain Viacom has signed.

Candy Kappa 05-30-2014 01:39 AM

Well, if it does good, and spins a trilogy. I may not be into the PD TMNT, but at least we who don't like them will get something in return with the money sprinkling onto projects we can enjoy. Similar like Transformers, hate the movies, but I do enjoy Animated. Prime and Fall for Cybertron, another game I like the designs far better then the movie

and who knows, maybe the story and choreography is great in the PD movie(s), and maybe I personally can enjoy the movies on that premise, despite the creature designs and other changes.
