How many of you wear glasses?

So with all this back-and-forth over BayDonnie wearing glasses, and the ensuing discourse as to whether it's a nerd stereotype... I'm wondering - how many of us here wear glasses?

I have to wear glasses for any kind of reading... since I'm usually reading, that means I've nearly always got them on.

Donatello19 06-05-2014 05:35 PM

I don't, but I always wanted to have glasses. I thought they looked cool.

Candy Kappa 06-05-2014 05:39 PM

I'm extremely near sighted, and it's only gotten worse over the past 10 years.

I hated wearing glasses, especially when I was doing Ju-Jitsu. Now I use contact lenses, have since 9th-10th grade. It's been so long since I used glasses the old pair I have don't help me any bit to see anymore.

Lenses gives me so much more freedom then I've ever had with glasses. But i should have had a extra pair of glasses in case I can't afford a new batch of lenses. I use daily lenses, and sometimes I can't afford new ones, so I often wear the same lens pair over several days. In fact, due to student loans I've not been able to buy new lenses last month, the pair I wear now I have had on my eyes for over a week, on Monday I can get a new pair and order new batch as I've gotten my salary by then.

Powder 06-05-2014 05:41 PM

I wear them, and they're very stereotypical geek glasses at that.

RaphAndDonnie 06-05-2014 05:45 PM

I've got an astigmatism so tiny words are not for me :ohwell: In other words, yes I do. I've been wearing glasses for about..the last two months I think and I got them at my mall's LensCrafters. They're OK and at first I was very particular about having them pushed up against my face so that I didn't look around the edges and having them spotless but now I'm a bit more relaxed with them and don't mind as much.

Candy Kappa 06-05-2014 05:49 PM

First time I tried contact lenses, everything looks different. Holding a regular 500ml coke bottle, I thought it was a new bigger bottle

BubblyShell22 06-05-2014 06:02 PM

I've worn glasses all my life due to being blind in one eye. If I didn't have them, I wouldn't really be able to see at all.

Hahaha! I know what you mean. I'm super super nearsighted as well and gave up glasses about 5 years ago. I'd worn them since I was 8 and couldn't believe the difference.

-8.50. You know I can't see at all. :-P

I love my contacts

Candy Kappa 06-05-2014 07:45 PM

Woah, I'm -6 on my right eye and -5,75 on the left. Although testing a new weekly lens I was given -8 on both.

When I was in for check ups for testing if my eyes was legible for contact lenses, my eye doctor did tell me that the skin under my eye lids could get irritated and react on the lenses. But I've been fine. I don't feel a thing even when using the same pair for days, gets a bit dry after the dirt night, but after that it's mostly a breeze. Still feels good to take them off.

Katie 06-05-2014 07:50 PM

I've never had a problem with mine either. I wear Air Optix night and day. I think those are only supposed to go for a month, but I wear them until they just get tooo scratchy...so like 2 months or so.

I take them out at night though. Never been able to sleep in them. I can't understand how some ppeople do that.

Candy Kappa 06-05-2014 07:54 PM

Mine are day lenses, so if I want to have them for a longer time I have to sleep with them. Personally it's not so bad falling asleep, it's the waking part, as it feels more comfortable just keeping the eyes shut after sleeping with the lenses on.

Bit of an hassle if I've fallen asleep on the bus.

Raph's Girl 06-05-2014 07:58 PM

I have astigmasim and have been wearing glasses for nearly 30 years now. I'd attempt contacts but my eyes are too messed up for that due to other health issues.

Shiro Kame 06-05-2014 07:59 PM

I've always needed glasses. My eyes are getting weaker and weaker with double vision from an astigmatism. I can't wear contact lenses since my eyes are shaped differently from others. I try not to wear geeky glasses.

Powder 06-05-2014 08:00 PM

I've come to really like how I look in glasses, and thank Pai Doth Noor I do, because there's no chance I'll ever get contacts. I have a really big thing about touching my eyes, no bueno. Can't do it. They're suuuuper sensitive, and I'm a wuss to boot. :trazz:

CyberCubed 06-05-2014 08:03 PM

I have glasses but I never wear them. I prefer the way I look without them and that's more important than seeing long distances.

Katie 06-05-2014 08:09 PM

I have astigmatism in my left eye and I thought I could never wear contacts, but I asked about it one time and they said I could try. Never going back.

I have glasses....and they are current.....but I hate wearing them

raphmike 06-05-2014 08:18 PM

yes, i wear glasses only help see far and without i read book or sewing.

blindturtle02 06-05-2014 08:54 PM

I wear shades, but that's just because allot of other blind folks wear them. Feels weird when I forget them before going out because I wear them pretty much everywhere.

Cipher 06-05-2014 09:16 PM

My eyesight is 'rill bad without aid, but nine days out of ten, I wear contacts instead of glasses. (Usually my wearing glasses is a signal that I didn't go to bed early enough to give the contacts six hours in their cleaning solution.)

Oh, wow. I'm -4.75 and -5.

I actually had to try it twice. You get used to it, and become more comfortable touching your eyes in general. Eye things still really bother me, but I can now do contacts no problem.

Leo656 06-05-2014 09:28 PM

I used to. My vision was about 20/40 when I was 10, so I wore them for a couple years. It was okay, they looked alright - I forget what they're called, but they're the style Harold Ramis wore in "Ghostbusters" - but they were a pain in the ass. To this day, I almost always read until I pass out, and I broke my glasses constantly by falling asleep wearing them. That, and in the summer I'd always get a bad raw spot where the nose piece would slide against the side of my nose when I was sweaty. Eventually they checked my vision again and said that my eyes had gotten a little better, up to 20/30, and that even with the glasses they said the best I'd ever have was 20/25, so I figured that was close enough and just quit wearing them when I was almost 13.

Sometimes as I've gotten older I feel like my eyes are getting blurry now and then, but I can't honestly tell. I'm sure I'll have to wear them again at some point in the future, at least sometimes, since literally everyone in my family has had to. Until then I figure I'm fine.

snake 06-05-2014 09:33 PM

I wear them and I love it.

Kanon 06-06-2014 12:36 AM

I have -0,75 and -1,5
I could wear contact lenses, but I hate those things.

Netkeeper 06-06-2014 01:11 AM

-9 in my right eye. Can't remember my left. I've been in glasses since I was around 6, I think? And I think I need another exam soon. Family's beginning to make fun of me for not being able to read the TV or clocks when they can. :V

My eyes are also very sensitive to light, so on top of my extreme near-sightedness [some glasses order websites don't even offer my prescription] I can't go outside without sunglasses. Transition lenses just aren't dark enough. When I was in school I had to have a doctor's note stating I needed those for medical reasons. :ohwell:

Whatswiththeheadbands? 06-06-2014 01:41 AM

Yep, I wear glasses. I used to hate wearing them, but now I like wearing them

pennydreadful 06-06-2014 07:33 AM

I haven't worn glasses my whole life - only for the last few years. I think my eyes just started to get tired from my non-stop reading and staring at computer screens all day for years on end.

Same here. I've been wearing them for almost 30 years for the same reason. I've been wearing glasses since I was 4.

...No, it really isn't

Eiko 06-06-2014 08:31 AM

Yep I wear them use to be only for reading but now I have to wear them full time.

Fourcylinder 06-06-2014 09:13 AM

Count me in as well, I have been wearing them since I started driving.

No offense, Cubed, but that's the stupidest logic I've ever heard. You better be careful because that could affect you in the future if you don't wear them. I have to wear mine, and I don't care how they make me look as long as I can see out of them.

My vision in my right eye with my glasses is 20/24. They never test me without my glasses because they know I can't see the letters without them. And I usually read to the third line with every check up. My next one is this August, so I'll see what they say about my vision then though that's my retinalogist who did my eye surgery. I haven't seen my regular eye doctor in a while, but I figure if something's wrong, Dr. Wilson will tell me. He did say my retinal detachment will never happen again, so that's good news.

And I've been wearing glasses since preschool.

Netkeeper 06-06-2014 12:05 PM

It might not be the smartest logic, but I can relate. One of my best friends is the exact same way. He refuses to wear glasses [but does wear contacts] because he cares more about his appearance than being able to see. Different people have different priorities.

That said, going without vision correction at all is not good for your eyesight.

Prowler 06-06-2014 01:00 PM

No, I do not wear glasses but used them for a few years when I was a kid(from 9 to 12, if I recall) due to Aestigmatism(sp?) or as they call it "lazy eye". I only needed them to read/watch tv/play video games/use the computer to avoid irritating my left eye.

I'm lucky, though since most of my family has/had myopia and could/can barely see anything without glasses.

Cipher 06-06-2014 02:48 PM

I also prefer the way I look without glasses.

That is why I wear contacts.

BubblyShell22 06-06-2014 05:48 PM

I have nothing against contacts at all as long as they help you see. But going without anything to help you see isn't smart as it could affect you in the long run.

There are so many cute choices for frames out there though... I'd have at least four different pairs if frames over here weren't so expensive. On the other hand, contacts would be fun because you'd be able to change your eye colour if you got the prescription colour kind! I don't think I could ever un-wussy enough to put something on my eyeball though.

For the people who do wear contacts - did you have that problem at first? I'm guessing it's something that you just get used to?

CyberCubed 06-06-2014 11:31 PM

Are kids wearing glasses in school now sociably acceptable?

I remember when I was a kid, all the students would always make fun of the kids wearing glasses calling them, "four-eyes" as well as all the fat kids. Not to mention the stereotype of being a nerd if you wear those point-dexter glasses.

I haven't been a kid in a long time, so I have no idea if its still like that.

Storm Eagle 06-06-2014 11:39 PM

My issue with glasses isn't with how they'd make me look, but with how they tend to be uncomfortable for me. I have two pairs, and I have a hard time wearing them indefinitely. I use them mainly for driving. Usually, I find myself taking mine off when I'm stopped at a light, and I put them back on when I see that the light is about to turn green.

In the beginning it was really weird, and putting the contacts on the wrong way would hurt. But now it's all an easy and problem free procedure. I was also in the beginning very fixated on washing my hands as clean as I could, lots of soap, clean the nails ect. Now I just give them a quick wash.

Lethal Lullaby 06-07-2014 02:34 AM

Well I'm supposed to wear reading glasses, but i don't. Mostly cause they're super uncomfortable and i forget to put them on.

I'm really not sure what the view on it is with today's kids... I remember that it was definitely looked-down-on when I was a kid. Now that I'm an adult, I know more people who wear glasses than people who don't, so I guess I hadn't really thought about glasses being geeky in quite a while!
