donny Just flipped a car...Im treating this movie as a cartoon from now on.

With Leo landing and creating craters, Raph back-handing some one to space, his destruction of the Humvee, Mike with the rocket skateboard, and now Don flipping a truck with his bow... it's pretty obvious that any sort of logic has been thrown out the window.

Yes, this is a movie about anthropomorphized turtles and a rat but that is just a specific section to create this story. The rest of the world doesnt really have function in the same crazy way. Heck in the Nick cartoon Don's Bo actually brakes and they have aliens and other dimensions.

This way i may enjoy the movie more. And i am actually doing this because of the Godzilla movie. The marketing for that movie gave you the impression that the movie was going to be one way but the movie is totally different. So with these little hints i am preparing myself for some crazy crap.

Candy Kappa 06-14-2014 02:37 PM

It's going to be a zany cartoony ride.

It's funny to see how fragile Nicktoon Donnie's staff is, as actual Bo don't break as easy, but a telescopic staff PD Donnie uses seems rather... Sturdy.

Which is made even funnier by the fact it flipped over a freaking truck.

Candy Kappa 06-14-2014 02:42 PM

With its spring-loaded action feature

Sewer Sirens Podcast 06-14-2014 02:42 PM

I want to say they have a reason for the truck going up in the air, by Donnie using his staff, as they come down the mountain. Don's staff (from what I've seen), isn't wooden, yet retractable. It doesn't look as breakable.

He put the bo, retracted, under the truck, and then with leverages it off a rock as he extends the bo under the truck.

However, that's all from memory and based off of not the best recording of the trailer from the theatre.

Also, a rocket skateboard is on par or even less than the same as something like Iron Man, Leo hasn't created "craters" (in my opinion). But I will give you Raph (however, I don't think they were intending to really have him going straight up, you just notice it after seeing the video in repeat)

electric_sheep 06-14-2014 02:47 PM

Maybe there's a really low gravity in this universe? That would explain why everything is so big, it needs to be heavy not to float away, that's why trucks are so light and foot soldiers fly into orbit.

I don't know if you guys noticed, but when Donnie was about to flip the truck over, he pressed a red button on his staff and used a large rock as a way to spring the truck upward. But I still don't know what material that staff is made of though :ohwell:

chrisdude 06-14-2014 02:53 PM

Eh. Yeah, they seem to bend the rules of physics a bit, but so what? I don't agree with the prevailing Hollywood reasoning that you can do whatever wild things you want in animation, but if you film a movie in live action, everything needs to be realistic. Who drew that line?

Isn't it a negative that comic book properties only get live action feature films by being forced into a realistic world? Anything that helps break that barrier is fine by me.

That makes sense.
Maybe the Utroms have been slowly lowering the gravity of the planet so they can walk around without using robots.

Xiewin 06-14-2014 02:56 PM

I think people are being a little bit too harsh on this movie..

xChri5x 06-14-2014 02:58 PM

Oh boy, another thread.

IndigoErth 06-14-2014 02:59 PM

This thing is gonna have some serious stretch marks by September with all the pulling in opposite directions between trying [too?] hard to be "realistic" and really unrealistic at the same time.

(Then again, with those muscles, so will the Turtles themselves.)

There's a certain level of goofiness you can do and this is apparent in all action films. Most of the stuff that Batman does is not really possible in real life. Those bat ropes he uses to escape need a device that is way bigger than the one he uses and one cant really glide the way Batman does but they still fall within a certain level of realism.

Flipping a truck with a stick, tackling a truck, and breaking bricks when you land are outside of the range of the standard turtle levels. But if they explain that.... they are hulk-level in strength i guess those events makes a bit more sense. But if they are the rocket skateboard makes no sense cause the power needed to move those things is tremendous! Unless those are Utrom tech... then i guess that makes sense...

Still... i am preparing for none of this to make any sense and going in thinking this is just a cartoon.

This is the direction I'm leaning towards atm. As I've said before, if I expect something on the level of the 1990 film, I'm bound to be disappointed - it's obvious at this stage that we're not going to get it. So maybe if I don't take it as seriously, I can enjoy it in a different way.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. We wouldn't question this stuff in a cartoon, or a comic book. But there's something about shooting something with a camera that makes everyone say, "They had better explain this, because it needs to make sense."

It's just like how people can't accept a dramatic, mature story if it's animated. Animation can only be for kids. It just doesn't make sense to me.

You're right, it wasn't a car.

It was a freaking TRUCK! With just his bo staff!

Clearly, real world physics are going to be ignored in this film.

Don is sliding down a hill again and sticks the bow staff in the wheel-weld and causes it to flip that way.

because science, physics, logic...
That staff better be made out of the heart of a dying star or that scene is going to be very silly.

No, he literally stuck his Staff underneath a truck, pressed a button, and it FLIPPED the truck over.

But Y'know, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

Well said! Films like Iron Man are full of realism-stretching stuff too, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie! A little over-the-top'ish stuff I can tolerate. It doesn't mean I'll swallow anything, but so far I haven't really seen anything in this film that is too outrageous for me to swallow.

Yeah, cartoons may get a bit more leeway but they are not immune to this.
Tom and Jerry are not on the same level as Ghost in the Shell: SAC.

The Japanese culture doesn't seem to have a problem accepting animation as a medium for dramatic, mature storytelling.

Actually, just saw an episode of TMNT 2012 where Raph is thrown into a brick wall, after being flung from a van and when his shell hit the brick wall building it smashed/cracked the wall.

Also saw Shredder pull 3 foot long retractable claws out and then a 3rd middle "swordlike" claw.

I find it funny listening to people come up with all these commentd about the movie and the cartoons did the same thing.

And all this talk about "a certain level of realism"... to me its either real or its not. You cant sit here and critique things that are unrealistic but accept others...well, you can it just makes no sense...

graphic_content 06-14-2014 05:40 PM

i dont know about you guys but i go dumpster diving, and make frequent trips into my local sewers to find awesome tech...

...in fact, i built my laptop from scraps i got in the sewers, and built my man-servant robot from parts i found at the local landfill.

Actually in NYC you can find a lot of good stuff when office buildings throw away their "old" things.

I actually passed this guy on my way to work a bunch of times.
Some of the stuff Don has is possible.

Gokhan 06-14-2014 07:52 PM

donny Just flipped a car..

Donatello flips a car with his Bo staff in the new released clips... it happens in the scene where they are going down the snow hill

I'm excited 2 have a new movie but super powered turtles bothers me slightly

Zulithe 06-14-2014 07:59 PM

Two things... I'm not an apologist just some observations:

1. yes, the turtles this time are bigger, beefier, stronger... not quite to The Hulk levels but you could definitely say they are "hulked out" -- though Don is less so than the other 3. The producers of this film chose to go a little further with what a mutant turtle might actually be capable of.

2. It's no ordinary staff... it's some sort of techno-gadget staff he made. You can tell by looking at promotional images of him holding it, as well as the toys. So it is capable of a bit more than your standard wooden staff.

slingtheory 06-14-2014 09:29 PM

The words. Do. Not. Want. As a fan of the martial arts aspect suuper strong turtles are trn off to me

Warhorse 06-14-2014 09:35 PM

Hmmm, in The Dark Knight, Batman flips over an entire semi truck, and it's trailer, vertically, with a souped up motor cycle, some wire and a few lamp posts, and no one thinks twice about it.

A mutant Turtle with a souped up Bo flips a car over (don't cowboys do that all the time with cows?) and everyone loses their minds.

beeshaw 06-14-2014 09:39 PM

Not to mention it's not Donnie using his *super hulk turtle* strength doing the flipping. It's the bo.

CyberCubed 06-14-2014 09:39 PM

They basically turned the Turtles into 4 Hulks in this movie.

So instead of the Turtles being ninja's and using stealth, they do "Hulk Smash" in every scene.

IndigoErth 06-14-2014 09:40 PM

Well, Hulk turtle with an specially engineered Anti-physics Bo.

Same goes for every other version of the turtles that includes the Turtle Van.

In each incarnation, they end up having an explanation (even if it's a little out there). TMNT is a 'little out there' property, having many 'out there' things. Mutant turtles, ninja clans in NYC, and, yes, a turtle van.

Even though this is a film approach to a franchise we all know and love, I'm open to bending "realism" rules for it, just like every other TMNT cartoon and comic. Just like every other big blockbuster film.

There's a lot of fun qualities added that may not exist in the real world. However, I would rather be open to it than nitpick about everything that might not be slightly realistic. This is a movie, a movie with many wacky things, that I don't want a thirty minute explanation for everything 'wacky' in it.

(This is not directed at all negative posters. If it seems I'm generalizing, I apologize. This isn't even all directed at you, Candy Kappa [it actually started that way, and then it turned into a post where I could address some other concerns or gripes].)

beeshaw 06-14-2014 09:52 PM

Yeah... Imma just not come into this thread anymore. lol :trolleye:

If Donnie kicked, or lifted it causing it to flip. Go ahead. HULK TURTLEZ it up, but that's not what happens.

I'll buy his 'Anti-physics bo' the same way I buy that he's an 'mutated anthropomorphic turtle who is trained by an anthropomorphic rat'.

There WILL be a degree of suspension of disbelief in this movie. This will not be super grounded, nor should it. This will not be super realistic, not should it. It should LOOK real, as it seems it does. But as long as it all works within the confines of this, their own universe, I'm there.

Set the 'rules' up and follow them though. If the Bo breaks in half the next scene against a Foot's shin. I'll be bitching like the next guy. But if this is how his new and improved Bo works, and they stick with it (heh), then I'm game.

I'll already take this one scene over 'Inflatable Punching Bag Donatello beating up a foot with a foam bat'.
