Kanji all around the turtles
 

So, paying attention to the new footage released for the movie, I realized the turtles got a bunch of kanji written all over, either on their bandanas or Raphael´s scar tattoo
I'm trying to figure them out, so, if anyone has already or if someone finds some good images that we could identify them, I couldn't find images or threads about it, but i believe you guys are way better than me at that, so, if anyone could help :) apreciated

Not "aroused", no... XD But I saw some posts on Tumblr looking in to it and apparently Raph's mean "beast", Don's mean "bright" (and it's followed by a turtle symbol) and Leo's mean "patient (child)". Haven't seen anything about Mikey's. Btw, anyone who knows what Raph's shoulder scarification means?

There's a post within a thread somewhere that does mention these already, though I think it's a fun topic that deserves its own thread and wouldn't mind hearing more and further confirmation on translations.

I love that they have these, and completely love what Leo's supposedly says (and totally relateable..:tlove:) but I haven't found a good, clear shot of it on the side of his mask yet.

I tried to ask them via Twitter and Facebook last night (along with the tattoos), but no response. They don't really seem to reply back to people much. I wish this would be an interesting tidbit of info they'd put out there. Unless of course there's going to be a direct explanation in the film, but I have my doubts.

Whoa! good catch, i haven't even realized that Raph had a kanji there, That second to last pic of him is flipped so the kanji he's got is just 獣 that means "beast" already

I was refferring though to the one he's got on the top of his head that seems to be the same he's got scarred on his right shoulder (that would have to be sculpted on - if anyone gets the hint - and i didnt want to wait until the movie is out :/)

Question on the kanji on raph back and the calling sign.
 

Hello does anyone know where I can get a picture of the kanji on raph back and in the movie where he leaves the kanji symbol when fighting the foot on the docks?

I haven't come across any clear shots of the symbols on their backs, unfortunately, don't think we get many shots of them from behind and just standing still enough to get a clear look. :ohwell: Plus with straps and whatnot in the way, hard to see it really.

I don't personally recall ever seeing any of them actually spray painting anything anywhere in the movie, it's just kind there, but not seen who did it. As for the mark itself not yet found it online.



On a different note, better shot of the symbols on Leo's mask. Is it still what was originally believed to have said?

The right side of Leo's bandana says musuko 息子 which means, Son.

I can speak and write Japanese btw.

The sign the turtles left behind looks to be 家门, not sure... can't make it out too clear but there is no such word in Japanese.

Also, Oroku Saki's Japanese is..... good i would say. Not bad but a bit off from the typical japanese's speed + pronunciation. But not bad.

Think it was the same as this on the wall of their dojo, if that helps.

Think the movie claimed it as a symbol for family? (Or was it a symbol for their family.) Although we all know Hollywood isn't always known for it's accuracy.



I hate (well not really hate) that they did not explain the ones on their masks, their tattoos etc. in the movie, even if just a quick mention...

Yeah, that's what i said, it looks like 家门.
but there's no such word in Japanese.

In chinese however it means the main door of the house.
家 itself is family/house, 门 is door.

On a second thought, after thinking about it.... pretty sure there's no such word.

Japanese's kanji are not 100% similar, but very close to traditional chinese.
And traditional chinese door is written as 門

门 is the simplified chinese used only by China after they find traditional chinese too hard to write. Simplified chinese is only used in malaysia, singapore and china (among others that i know of).

Hong Kong, Taiwan uses traditional chinese.

Japanese are based off of traditional chinese but writings had evolved separately too so certain words are different from traditional chinese.

Ah, I see. So it's all very possibly the Hollywood version of whatever the heck they came up with themselves then I guess? That's 'research' for ya.

Or maybe it's just a Rat and Turtles somehow falsely learning to speak, read, and write a language they really have no given reason to have knowledge of. (Let alone read or write English either.)

I've seen American shows where they speak gibberish and then try to write it off as Japanese or Chinese. I'm asian, so i'm like................... :roll: But just fyi, Shredder's Japanese is legit.

Well, the actor playing Shredder is Japanese, I don't think he would be ok with just talking gibberish (though "Oroku Saki" is quite the gibberish japanese name, right?)

That's another stupid thing. The symbol left behind as a calling card easily could have been used as a symbol for the Hamato clan. If there was a Hamato clan. If there was a saki and Yoshi rivalry.

Real wasted opportunity. So much wasted potential.

Not really no. Imagine how bad ass it would be if they did leave the Hamato Clan symbol as a calling card for Shredder to know 'we're coming for you'.

Kinda like the NickShredder recognized the Hamato symbol that made him book a flight to NY in the first place.

Hmm, I never thought of it being written sideways...

But still it doesn't look exactly right, and the meaning of 早 (early) doesn't quite relate to Mikey anyway. Still seems like an unsolved puzzle to me.

Still disappointed that the film didn't go into any meaning of these details at all, it would easily add so much depth to the film for these little details to have a reason to exist and made known to the audience, rather than just simply being there because it "looks cool."

If it's just to look cool, that's kinda stupid... (Same with the tattoos. Someone who's bound to be a bit of a purist (at least in self) like Leo has one? Come on, then it stands to reason it should prob be meaningful to him. So where's the meaning.)

I hate the 2014 turtles, but you're work is amazing. I'm betting there will be more than a few people drooling over your next customs.

Which, in a way is very fitting for this movie, considering Splinter's (seemingly) only Japanese tie-in is Gwen Stefani's music videos and that American book of "Ninjutsu"

i need a HD pic of Mikey's back (with the graffiti kanji painted on his shell) so i can complete my custom figure :/
i cannot find a good pic anywhere (well, mostly around here XD) so i might have to wait for the bluray and hope i get a good screencapture :/
