Who the hell wanted Mondo Gecko back?
 

Ok so I'm not really one of the people who are mad that they're using too many elements from the Fred Wolf cartoon because there are some neat ideas like Mutagen Man and Metalhead that really never lived up to their potential. But why on earth bring back Mondo Gecko? He's an outdated 90's stereotype, a waste of imagination, he looks like, like...


Yeah, like that and "that" was meant to satirise shallow ideas.

I'm glad they're bringing him back. Just like the other characters, he can be updated to fit this turtleverse. Besides, it would be nice for Mikey to have a friend. Donnie has April, Raph has Casey, Leo has...training... um yeah...

Edit: If Karai hadn't have been mutated, I'd say Karai for Leo, but as she is now, probably not, so if he does get introduced into the series, Usagi Yojimbo.

And didn't Metalhead never have a personality in the OT? Wasn't Mutagen Man pretty annoying (voice-wise)?
It's the changes that make it worthwhile. I'm interested to see what changes we get with Mondo Gecko.

But why Mondo Gecko though? Mikey has already established a connection with Leatherhead so just make a bigger part of the show, there are already 15 or so characters that don't seem to serve much purpose and now they're going to introduce Mondo Gecko, a Punk Frog, some Care Bears parodies and two Swamp Thing homages?

Me. I WANTED MONDO BACK. Hows that for you? He was a fun character and I love the adventures comics. So.... yep I am psyched.

I only remember him from the back of a toy box that I glanced. But just based on that, I reckon he's a pretty cool character - the name just have a nice ring to it and I still remember it today. And he's kinda like a surfer dude like Mikey I guess so that's a plus.

Bring it on.

I love Mondo Gecko. He's to Mikey, what Miyamoto was to Leo and Casey Jones to Raph! They need those kinds of characters.

Yeah, in the OT he was like a surfer like dude, skateboarder, etc., so he got along with Mikey quite well. It sucked that he wasn't in many episodes. The only thing about OT Mondo Gecko that I dislike is the convoluted Venus-style origin story. Archie's version was a bit better origin wise.Well, Leatherhead doesn't strike me as the type who'd be into comic books or skateboarding or other leisurely things that Mikey likes. It's great that he and Leatherhead are friends, but I couldn't see him playing the "best bud" role as far as hobbies and interests go.

I'm glad that they brought Mondo Gecko back. Mikey needs a BFF sort of like, how Raph and Casey been BFFs for all these years in the comics.

Being the youngest member of the 4, Mikey needs someone he can relate to, and Mondo Gecko is the perfect character for that. They been buddies in the Archies series comics and Fred Wolf series, Until they killed him off and the rest of the Mutanimals near the end of the comics.

Mikey needed somebody to lean on.

You worded this better. I do feel that Mikey needs a good friend outside of his brothers, and I feel that Leo does too. If she hadn't have been mutated, maybe Karai could've filled that role, and I was kind of hoping for it.

It's almost as if none of you read the Archie comics. Mondo Gecko had a bigger role in the comics than the original show where he was only in 2 episodes.

It's been mentioned. I even mentioned it. He was part of the Mutanimals.

What i'll say this this...

I LOVE his new design. So for that reason alone, i'm glad he's back.

But beyond that, we already know that just because a character returns in the Nick series doesn't mean they will be very similar to their previous versions. Just look at so many characters we've already been re-introduced to.

So even if you did not like previous Mondo Gecko, you might like the new version.

I would have liked if Mikey had a different friend.....a human one.

I'm down with Gecko. He's got some pretty big legs in the Turtlesverse, mostly with his role in Adventures. He's not a ridiculous character to bring back.

Wait a minute. They're bringing back mondo gecko and he's being voiced by robbie rist? I can't believe I've been checking out comic con news all weekend and I missed this? On the subject I've never really had much of an affinity for the guy myself but then I only saw his couple of episodes in the show and never read any issues of the archie series that he was in. I think the castings pretty brillant though so I'm excited to see where it goes.

In the Archie comics he started off as a human, and if iirc, his gf stayed with him even after he was mutated. Sucks what happened to him and the other Mutanimals though.

If you ask me, this series really needs a few more allies, so...I'm fine with Mondo Gecko.

Mondo Gecko was based on an 80's skateboarding stoner rockstar teen. In Archie he was a rockstar before getting mutated.

I am a SUPER big fan of the Mighty Mutanimals, specifically Wingnut, Ray Fillet & Mondo Gecko (maybe in that order, even? :trazz:) but I never really thought they'd be a good fit for this series. So despite my love for the characters, I'm not as psyched as I prolly should be. But as always, I am open minded, & interested in seeing what Ciro & the gang come up with! The voice casting is great, & the design is neato. These guys haven't failed me yet (unless Kirby IS supposed to be Wingnut after all, in which case, BLECH!).

with how this show updates its characters to the modern day, im sure gecko wont be the same skateboarding 90's stereotype. i imagine theyll give him an update, and im glad to see them adding someone that mikey can be close to

one thing i like about this design is his resemblance to the geico gecko. i may just be generalizing here, since theyre both geckos, but still, they look alike

In my book they should keep Mondo Gecko and Get rid of the frog! Or at least work on his design some more! Mondo Gecko was just a really fun character.

The new design for Mondo Gecko is awesome! Maybe even (can't believe I am saying this) better than the OT design! I can't wait to see the spin Nick puts on his character!

Since he didn't appear in the show till Season 5, I'd wager to say he debuted in Archie first.

Yep. He debut in the comics long before appearing on two episodes of the original series. I still have that comic when he first debut.

Ok so I noticed some errors between those pics, I just checked the issue and it ragards his clothing. All the clothing errors ragarding Mondo in that issue are the following:

Page 9, panel 1, kneepads show up out of nowhere.
P9, P3, red gloves pop up from nowhere.
P9, P4, red elbow pads pop up.
P10, P1, elbow pads are gone.
P10, P2, left elbow pad is back.
P12, P1, the kneepads are now asymetrical.
P14, P1, elbow pads are back but purple and the kneepads are symetrical again.
P14, P2, no elbow pads.
P14, P5, purple elbow pads.
P16, P2, pants now cover knee with a hole and no kneepad.
P16, P3, missing right elbow pad.
P18, P1, (oh dear god) a lost hat and the gloves are back but the right glove is black now, and the kneepads are asymetrical and one now has a spike.
P19, P3, both gloves are red.
P20, P1, both gloves are black.
P21, P3, missing gloves.
P22, P3, one red glove is back.
P24, P1, both gloves are black.
P24, P4, red glove.
P25, P3, no gloves.
P27, P1, red and black gloves.
P27, P2, red pants and hat.
P28, P2, pale purple hat and no gloves.

That's comics for ya.

well to be fair... he debuted as an action figure first. It's just the comic got to him first. I kinda like those days. When a new toy came out it was a question of wether he'd be in the comic or the cartoon first.

And yeah, I want him back. And of course he can be updated. Mikey was the surfer dude and he isn't so much anymore. And unless you haven't seen the show... Mikey is a pretty awesome skateboarder on the show too.... so how does being a sk8ter outdate Mondo?

And yeah, Mikey has Leatherhead... but he needs a fellow 'duuuuuuuuuuuuude' to hang with that understand him.

Honestly once the show started bringing in OT characters, he was the top of my list of people I wanted back.

I can't wait to see Muckman, Mondo, and any other "old school" character appear. Hell, I'd even like to see Venus appear (yeah, I said it!! haha). :lol:

I recently gave my 5 year old a bunch of vintage figures to add to his Nick turtles collection, including a Mondo Gecko figure. When I showed him the designs for the new Nick Mondo Gecko he was excited. He also has a Muckman figure and can't wait to see the new one on Nick.

I truly love the Nick show and hope it continues for quite a few years. Awesome stuff.
