Anyone else nervous about kids in the theater?

So I saw Guardians of the Galaxy and I thought it was a great movie overall, I'd give it an 8.5/10, but I really would've enjoyed it more if it wasn't more a little kid who would NOT SHUT UP THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE MOVIE. I told his parents to shut him up THREE TIMES throughout, and they just rolled their eyes. Since a lot of kids like TMNT, I am a bit nervous about this happening with TMNT. However, I rarely have bad moviegoer or little kid problems at my theater. The last it happened was with The Muppets in 2011. But I am still am a bit nervous. Anyone else.

IndigoErth 08-01-2014 08:47 PM

To be honest this is partly why I more than likely will wait and go one day during the week in early afternoon. When hopefully many of the parents are at work and unavailable to take their kid at that hour, and the big rush for opening day/weekend has been through.

Hope that will at least somewhat increase my chances of getting my preferred seating and less kids to carry on and/or kick my seat the entire time. I hope the kids that go see it enjoy it, but I'd rather enjoy it myself with less interruption.

Cure 08-01-2014 08:49 PM

I'm worried about kids for every movie I go see, R rated movies included.

Same. I had Captain America 2 almost ruined for me because some idiots decided to show up with their 1 year old and sat right in front of me. Then the same idiots showed up again when I saw X-Men (but this time I knew to move before the movie started so that saved it for me).

As it is, I generally only go to movies on Sunday morning to avoid kids as much as possible (yes, both times these idiot parents brought their squirmy kid to the Sunday morning show).

At least when I saw The LEGO Movie I knew to expect kids and was prepared to tolerate them (and yet I blissfully ended up sitting next to some other childless adults).

Bring water balloons when entering the cinema.

When one of the ****ers make a fuss, throw it.

the same goes for me...its usually why i go to early shows but with it being summer its hit or miss

CyberCubed 08-01-2014 09:12 PM

You should hit them.

Mona_Lisa 08-01-2014 09:13 PM

If it makes you feel any better, I'm leaving mine at home, Already got a babysitter!!!:D

Although my kids are (normally) very well behaved!!!

Dirty Blond 08-01-2014 09:22 PM

Go to a late show, though that's no guarantee either.

beeshaw 08-01-2014 09:37 PM

< - that kid's coming with me.

He's well behaved, been to lots of movies (Hell, he even sat through all of Amazing Spider Man 2) and his legs are too short to reach the seat in front of him. So I'm not worried about MY kid in the theatre.

psychturtle 08-01-2014 10:05 PM

I cannot begin to say how much I HATE when dipsh*t parents bring kids that drop skittles everywhere, talk really loudly, cry/fuss, kick the back of my chair, etc. It's just a majormdistraction. It doesn't matter what time of day, disruptive kids show up always. When I go to the movies, I always look for areas where kids are not near. I usually have to show up to movies later so I know where they are sitting. If I go early, they find me every time and ruin movies.

Again I abhor when both adults and kids become so disruptive that I begin asking myself why I even watch movies in the theater in the first place.

Cowabunga! Booyakasha! 08-01-2014 10:15 PM

Hell forget the kids I've been around just as many annoying adults as well. People who don't give a **** about taking their cell phones out cause they only give a damn about themselves and can't wait until the movie is over to be on their phones.

I've had a movie pass this past year but I'm over going to the movies now and I will only go for movies I must see on a big screen now which won't be many

sgtfbomb 08-01-2014 10:27 PM

The theater experience as a whole just sucks in general and it's mostly because the people -- those in the theater, those running the theater, and those outside the theater, telling you that if you don't like the movie they've made to piss off. :P

Of course, there's also the ticket prices, the less bang for your bucks concessions, the lousy, squeaky seats that hurt your back, etc.

I'd be happy to live in a world where on day 1, I could just buy the movie and be done with it.

Getting there I think, since some "on demand" features from some cable companies have a "same day as theater" retal option for some movies. Personally I'd like to own a hard copy as well, but it's a start. :)

Leo656 08-02-2014 12:48 AM

Yeah, part of the reason I was already wary of seeing this in theaters regardless of anything else. Kids in the theater are sometimes a real huge pain in the ass. Not every time, obviously - I've actually been really pleasantly surprised more than once - but I've also been to more than a few movies where there were kids who just would NOT shut up.

I remember one of the times we went to see Superman Returns, there was this one kid that was so restless he kept talking, shouting, and running up and down the aisles. The family was sitting a couple rows in front of us and did little more than throw up their hands in frustration, it was horrible. If I'd acted like that when I was a kid, I would've been smacked so hard I'd have been embedded in the wall. Not just me, either; I vividly remember back then that I'd very often see kids get at least a spank for "making a scene" in theaters, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. I understand that kids nowadays are more hyperactive and less respectful in general, but fine, leave 'em home, then.

I feel like 10 is a decent age, that seems a little high but I personally don't recall seeing anyone who looked around that age act up. I feel like kids around 5 or 6 are too over-stimulated. And I kind of blame the parents more, I mean they're the ones who are supposed to set the example, but I guess they figure, "I paid all this money, let him (it's almost always little boys, y'notice?) do what he wants."

As a rule of thumb, we tend to go see "kids movies" at the latest possible showing nowadays, and that helps tremendously. Few parents want their kids up until almost 2am for a night out, even in summer.

Raphies 08-02-2014 01:05 AM

I hope there aren't many when I go, as well other crappy people who have no consideration for others when they yap on their phone.

Although I saw Frozen with a theatre packed full of kids and they were literally the most well-behaved kids I've ever witnessed.

Mhmm... I was never one to make a scene, but hell IF I had I'd have been promptly removed from there, dead silence the entire car ride home and hear it like hell once we got in the house, both for having acted however and for the waste of money AND the loss of my parents enjoyment of the film.

Hmm.. a late one sounds like a good idea, will have to watch and see what hours it's playing around here.

Leo656 08-02-2014 01:25 AM

I'unno about over there but in NJ a lot of theaters start their last show about 11:30 or so, which works out pretty well. Depending on length and how many trailers there are, a show gets out around 2am and most parents simply won't bring their kids to that, drive home, get them into bed between 2 and 3 in the morning, etc. So that works out pretty well, usually only about 20 people total in there around that time, which is also great when you just want to sit wherever you want. Sometimes it's even shocking how few people will go to that late a show even for a really good movie that's really popular. I've gone to blockbusters like three days after they opened and there'd be like ten people there at 11:30. I think it has nothing to do with the specific movie and everything to do with most people just don't want to be out that late, maybe for a bar or a dinner but not for a movie.

Good luck. :)

Konchadunga 08-02-2014 03:17 AM

If one of the little ***** is there, I'm going to yell at him to shut up. That should at least make things more entertaining.

Shadowsculptor 08-02-2014 03:34 AM

Yep it's my main pet peeve when going to the theater. I plan on going to as late of a showing as possible. Hopefully around 10pm on Thursday. Hopefully children are more attracted to the 3D ******** too.

Also, I'm not too worried about it. I'm going to a kids movie, so there's bound to be a little bit of that rowdiness going on.

mgambino 08-02-2014 05:42 AM

I bring my kid with me to every movie I see (as long as it's appropriate, obviously). He almost always behaves, and if he doesn't, we leave... because I'm not a crappy parent.

Leo656 08-02-2014 05:54 AM

That's a tough stance to make to walk out since movies are so expensive, but way to lay down the law. And from the sound of it, I bet you don't have to do that much. Sounds like you have the situation under control. Kudos.

Indeed. Good on ya. Have yet to take the Burgermeister (Trey's aunt calls him "Trey Burger" for....some reason. She's not even sure.) to a movie. But then again, he's only 2. I hope he'll be good at movies. He's been good at church and at the ball game on our shared birthday trip.

Leo656 08-02-2014 06:05 AM

As I said earlier, I think some kids just can't handle all the over-stimulation. Those tend to be sort of rowdy kids in general. It's like, they either know how to act in a public setting, or they don't. The same kids who act up in movies tend to act up in restaurants, at the park, etc. If they're generally well-behaved across the board, they probably will be in a movie.

Most of the movie theaters I've been to are willing to comp you the tickets if you leave because your kid is flipping out... I guess they'd rather deal with that than a bunch of people complaining.

That being said, there are certain things that are just common sense when you take a kid to a movie that some people don't do: Don't go during a time when they should be sleeping/eating/ect, don't take them to see something that's going to bore the hell out of them, and don't take them to a movie they have no business being at; people are going to be much more tolerant of a kid being a kid during a Pixar movie than during Sin City 2.

... if only something could be done about adults that answer their phones during movies, which the guy sitting next to me at the early Ninja Turtles screening did.

There is. It's called following them to their car and, as they're about halfway in, run up really fast and slam the door shut on their skull as hard as you can.

Fully 100% of those people never answer their phone during a movie again.

RaphaelinSTL 08-02-2014 08:24 AM

Besides just kids, noisy people in a movie theater is something I'm always concerned about. Luckily most of the films I was checking out were in a smaller, local theater next to an apartment I was living at with my ex-girlfriend so I never had to worry about a bunch of kids. Plus, I think it was the movies I was checking out as well. Like last night, I went to see Boyhood (best movie of the year so far I'd say) and of course there wasn't an annoying type of crowd.

For TMNT, we're bound to have obnoxious little kids in a theater with us so that's why I'm thankful I'm getting an advanced screening next Wednesday and I'll more than likely be checking out the Thursday 7:00 showing with some friends the day after.

Long story short, yeah....misbehaved children can certainly ruin an experience for me.

For this movie to be succeful it needs kids to love it much like the transformers series. It sounds like this movie is going for a light hearted feel with an updated grittier look and I believe that caters to a younger audience. They need the fans of the nick series to really go nuts over this movie and I think if they achieve that then we could get a sequel announcement within a few weeks. But I've read on a couple different boards that so called hardcore fans are not going to see this movie because of bay, nostrils, lips ect. If that's true then that's ****ing stupid. It's a tmnt movie and if the personalities are there that should be good enough for all fans to show thier support.

For me the problem is usually not the children, but adults who bring in popcorn and other crap, and make noises trough the whole movie by eating/rubbing the snacks-bag, etc.

It's a real killjoy listening to thousands of yum-yum at the most dramatic scene of the movie. No wonder, I usually avoid movie theaters.

Not saying all teenagers are like this, but I seem to have the most issues with teens acting up during a movie. Just acting a fool all throughout. Like taking selfies during the movie. I understand they are documenting their good time, but DURING a movie? With the flash and everything? And disturbing people. And I've had some teens who just wouldn't settle down, and I tried nicely to ask them to stop and they just got even worse after I said something.

I've also gotten people who have gone seen a film I was seeing, and just heckled the entire time. Just making comments throughout, rude ones, and you know, not everyone will be pleased with any movie, but do you have to be a loud, persistent movie critic during the ENTIRE film?! Maybe I enjoy it and you're heckling is just ruining the entire thing.

If my friend and I have to, we'll sit ALL the way in the back to avoid people as such. Least we know no one will be behind us.

Well, I am one of those people who bring their own snacks in (sure I'm not the only one!), which I usually bring them in plastic zip lock bags, since they make the less amount of noise. I'll do the same with popcorn I buy. I'll nab from the bucket and put in a plastic bag (because I mix Hot Tamales candy with my popcorn, and not everyone likes that, whereas I do). But yeah, I open candy and such prior and put it in a zip lock and bring the zip lock. Because it's quieter, bigger so I don't have problems reaching in and grabbing the items inside, and I also like to mix candy. Plus, it becomes a pain dealing with all these candy boxes when it's a lot easier just putting it all in a baggie. But I have never had anyone around me complain or hear me when I eat snacks at the movies.

Vicky82 08-02-2014 11:21 AM

I've been a bit lucky with kids in theater, I sit near the back as most kids like to sit near the front. Apart from the time when I went to see Transformers 4, I could hear a kid keep asking questions to his parents about what he's seen in the movie, that was annoying.

Also a few years ago, I took my Nephew to the cinema to see Meet the Robinsons. A parent brought a 2 year old to watch a movie and the kid just wouldn't sit still and parent just let her kid just run up and down(Nobody complained to her about it as their were only about 5 more people watching it).

When I went to see Toy Story 3, the screen was full and were alot of teenagers in front of me and they were talking and being rowdy. The movie hadn't started and not even the adverts had even come on yet but a parent who sat behind me went over to them to ask them if they going to be quiet during the movie. They were quiet of course but the kids with that parent weren't and she had to leave 20 mins into the movie after another parent complained to her.

Not a rant over kids in movies but over the cinema itself

When I went to see TMNT 2007 movie the screen was half full. The movie didn't start off well as it had no sound and people started to shout to projectorist but to no avail so most of them went out to complain. we finally got sound after about 10 mins. Luckily the staff game us free movie tickets, I used mine to see the movie again, which that time had sound from the start.

You do realize that you'd be just as annoying as the kid in that instance, right?

Also, if you hear people munching on snacks, which is hardly the most disrespectful thing at a movie theater, then what you should complain about is that their sound isn't loud enough.

I totally get where you're coming from I had a kid in dawn of the planet of the apes that's was awful throughout half of the movie and it was a 9:15 showing. My biggest problem with this film has been the non stop nitpicking of every aspect of the film from all the fans. I've been a tmnt fan for as long as I can remember and now that I'm 31 I think I'm just glad that we've gotten a new series (fingers crossed). So I'm really hoping this strikes a chord with kids because I don't think we will get another reboot for quite some time if this one fails. But I'm also one of those that has warmed up to the look of the turtles and the personality and heart seems to be there. I hope I'm not in the minority
