This will also include, Opening Weekend, Domestic, Global and also if your from a different country post here how much it's making at your box office.

In a few hours we will find out how much TMNT does on Thursday night,

The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot finally came out of its shell on Thursday, scoring $4.6 million in evening showings in 2,651 theaters.

Paramount estimates that the film, which was directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, will make somewhere in the mid-to-high $40 million in its opening weekend. The film, listed at a budget of $125 million, is rumored to have cost closer to $150 million.

Comparatively, Captain America: The Winter Soldier made $10.2m on its Thursday preview opening, X-Men: Days of Future Past made $8.1m, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made $8.7m, Transformers: Age of Extinction made $8.75m, and Guardians of the Galaxy made $11.2m.

Also, Guardians still beat TMNT yesterday, taking in $7.6m for its second Thursday.

I guess to be more accurate with the numbers we should wait till tomorrow to see exactly what the movie brings in for a Thursday night. Also I feel like some people here want to see this movie bomb and favor a Marvel property.

We've been through this before, but... some of us just want the better movie to be more successful. Besides, we can be TMNT fans and Marvel fans.

That's even higher than $4.2 million that Maleficent made back in May. Though that movie had an overwhelmingly female crowd. This film is on track for a $45 million to $50 million opening.

Wasn't Maleficent considered a flop?

Edit: Huh, I guess it DID do pretty well for itself.

Certainly not. It has so far grossed $727 million worldwide, including $235 million from North America, against a budget of $180 million.

Important thing to consider from the Deadline comment section:

Quote:

When the media reports this weekend’s box office numbers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will include Thursday night receipts. Guardians of the Galaxy box office grosses for Thursday won’t be counted in this weekend’s numbers. It will be a close battle between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy under the traditional reporting of weekend grosses for a new movie and a movie in its second weekend of release.
So keep in mind that when the final weekend numbers are in, that the extra $4.6m for TMNT's Thursday night "count" toward that total and GotG's Thursday numbers don't. Weird how they do that.

TigerClaw 08-08-2014 11:12 AM

The film open with 4.6 million on Thursday, That's pretty good.

bloodstainedwings 08-08-2014 11:13 AM

I hope this movie does well. If it does do well am seeing it doing so slowly. How much do you guys think this movie needs to make in order for the film makers to be happy with it? I would love to see it reach $800 Million+ at the end of its run like Transformers 1

I heard that a movie needs to make double its budget to break even, do you guys think this is actually true? Ninja Turtles would have to make $250 Million to break even if this rule is true.

bloodstainedwings 08-08-2014 11:16 AM

I am going to see this movie tomorrow, I am excited for it!!!!!!!!

Ya The double or nothing rule does apply, but you also have to take the marketing into the figures as well. So the budget was around 125, and usually it is around 50 to 60 more for marketing. So I would say close to 300 to break even. I am predicting around 450 to 550 at the end of it all. The overseas market will help the film.

NinjaPug 08-08-2014 12:42 PM

Rule of thumb is 2.5x the production budget. I've seen a couple reports over the past few days from the trades saying that TMNT's production budget was closer to $150 million and not the reported $125 million.

bloodstainedwings 08-08-2014 01:09 PM

So how do movies make any money? DVD/Blu-Ray, VOD sales times how many times they intend to sell this movie over time??
If this rule is true, how can people get excited for how well a movie is doing at the Box Office? Take AVATAR for example everyone was going on and on about how the movie made 2 Billion+ at the Box Office. No one really knows how much it cost to make the movie, all they were saying is that it was the most expensive movie to make at the time. For all we know the profit could have been low for that movie.

SwiftNinjaFox 08-08-2014 01:41 PM

In that same article, Deadline is reporting Guardians took 7.6 million on Thursday night against TMNT's 4.6 million. It's set records from it's night of release through every night since.

It's really going to be determined by word of mouth, I think.

Moviegoers have been racing to Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” propelling the wisecracking terrapins to an opening weekend as high as $60 million at the U.S. box office.

Friday afternoon forecasts placed “Turtles” well ahead of the second weekend of Marvel-Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which looked likely to finish the frame between $41 and $46 million.

“Turtles” started strongly Friday with initial estimates in the $19 to $25 million range — including $4.6 million in late-night screenings Thursday at 2,651 locations.

Before anyone starts jumping up for joy, one decent weekend doesn't mean a lot for a "sequel" possibility of course. It needs legs for the following weekend and I have a feel this film is going to drop heavily.

It should be noted that those numbers are the weekend estimate.

The actual Friday gross was 25.7M, so there's still a lot of room for change.

Just saying. 2007 did about 24 to 25 million for it's opening weekend, on a 35 million budget. It would gross about 54 domestic, and 90 million WW. Again, on a 35 million budget. And it still didn't get it's sequel.

The production budget for this new movie is believed to be anywhere between 125 to 150 million. Usually, not always, but usually, the OW is about half of what a movie will gross totally for it's domestic run. I'm seeing between 120 to 140 for it's domestic run. Not so great when you faction in the 125 to 150 production budget. But, the franchise does rely heavily on merchandise sold, so perhaps it will make things better in the long run.

Is the new movie merchandise really selling all that well? I mean, maybe when kids go see this movie they'll flock to the toy store and buy them all but every time I go to Target or Toys R' Us, I always see full shelves.

Look at Green Lantern, that movie was banking on hoping that the merchandise sales would keep the franchise alive but I think around like August or September of 2011...only two months after Green Lantern came out, the toys were all on clearance. Nobody was buying it and because sales of those Ryan Reynolds toys were so bad, they cancelled the Green Lantern animated series. Hell, I went to Six Flags last weekend and they STILL have the movie masters figures there for like...4 dollars.

Sure, kids are buying the TMNT 2012 merchandise....but I don't think everyone is grabbing the movie stuff just yet. I'll admit, when those toys came out I immediately grabbed a Raphael (my favorite) and Shredder. I'm keeping the figures in the box and they're fun to look at...but the fact remains every time I go out to a store, it's nothing but tons of un-purchased merchandise.

It's possible. When 2007 movie came out, the merchandise wasn't exactly disappearing from the store shelves either. Me personally, I got a couple of TMNT T-Shirts at Hot Topics, and that was it. Lack of merchandise sales could have been the nail in the 2007 TMNT coffin, despite it breaking out number one in it's OW and making a modest profit in the overall BO run.

Yeah, I was working at Target at the time and I can recall getting the merchandise in but no one really getting it. That was the first year I think I didn't buy anything TMNT figure related as well. I just couldn't get into the figures, they were too....blocky. I'm not really sure the right word for it.

Guess it will be interesting to see how low merchandise sales play a part if possible with this film. I know that's what was the final nail in the coffin for Speed Racer in 2008 too.

Obviously they are estimates.. but I've never seen a movie be too far off.

In reality, it should finish anywhere between $50M-$65M, which is above studio's expectations anyway.

Where I live, the story is completely different. I have been to multiple Wal-Mart stores and everything is selling out. The store closest to me has two different displays of movie toys. I'll see them completely stocked, only to be gone two days later.

By the way, saw the movie for the 3rd time last night. The theater sold out every showing for the day. Never saw my theater this packed. Used a Guardians 3D screen between showings just to make room. It is an amazing time to be a Turtle!

Shark_Blade 08-09-2014 10:58 AM

This movie is truly a gift.

I'm glad it's selling out very well. I was about to purchase ticket this evening for the 4th time and the seats are already sold out. Had to buy midnight ticket, but I'm so very happy it's doing great. :tlove:

May it soar sky high.

And yeah movie toys are selling well too.

It is such a cool feeling. Everyone I have talked to said they loved the movie. I have very much enjoyed seeing all the kids going crazy at the theater (reminds me of myself, when I was a little sprout). Favorite quote, "Mom, did you see the one time? Raph looked right at me!" Cowabunga!

Indeed, And its no doubt we will have sequels, Hopefully they can get a better writer working on the sequel this time, This first movie had more then one writer, So there were some obvious rewrites happening..

The film is really exceeding expectations like Maleficent did a few months ago. Box office analysts really underestimated the fan base. The marketing also really kicked in the past few months and I'm sure we got a little bit of a boost from Comic-Con.

First of all, cartoon movies were just becoming popular back then.. and Turtles, though on TV again, were nowhere near as popular as they are now. The 2003 series did well, but nothing like the new Nick series. Kids are crazy about Ninja Turtles like they were back in the late 80s.

If this movie does $150M domestically, it probably only needs needs $150M overseas. Add in the merchandise and the 3D glasses (that are sold out everywhere), and you have a huge hit.

I don't see how you can be skeptical here when the studio was seemingly very happy with a mid-40s opening. The extra $15M or $20M is going to blow them out of the water.

Just becoming popular? I'm pretty sure cartoon movies have always been popular. Look at Toy Story or the Lion King. I don't really see what you're getting at there.

Sure, box office analysts had this film pegged to come in a little lower and while that's all fine and dandy...people really need to see how it plays out and does into the next weekend. For me personally, any success of this movie is a true loss because I'm really not digging the direction and the universe set up for me in this first film.

I don't think the studio will take it's time and they'll try to rush their version of TMNT 2 by 2016 to strike while the iron is hot again. It'll be basically what happened with Amazing Spider-Man 2.
