So what will happen if the majority of you like the movie?

I've been lurking for about 2 weeks and I'm just curious to see how how the forum will change if the general consensus is that it's worthy of being in the universe? A lot of you guys seem to be split about how you think it'll turn out. I went to see it last night and I loved it.

Midnight Mutant 08-08-2014 02:53 PM

What will happen if the majority of us like the movie?

The world will explode. :teek:

I don't think the forum would change much at all aside from probably more positive posts than negative, and excitement/theories of an eminent and anticipated sequel. Maybe more faith in the actors and directors, or not being so fast to dismiss the sequels.

Even if the majority of the forum likes the movie (which, given the major flaws it has, I doubt is going to happen), I expect that the forum will still be heavily divided.

I do think most of the people who have seen it so far agree that it COULD be in the turtleverse, it's just executed poorly. I haven't seen anyone say the movie isn't true enough to the material to be part of the turtleverse....yet, I'm sure a few will spat that out eventually.

Plenty of people love it some can't except that for some reason. I loved it so much

No different from the pro-movie crowd not being able to accept the fact that some people think the movie is terrible. That's just the way it goes.

Nothing really. More positive threads and less not so postive threads.

Well then I guess there will at least be more comfort with the thought of a sequel. At least by that point hopefully most will be used to these particular Turtles enough that any change-whiplash will be about other things.

And maybe people can calm down for the time being while fans, after so much drama, sit here like "well now what..." lol

I did too! After waiting years for it to come out I was finally in the theater and I got very nervous but it turns out so well!

The movie as a whole won't be received as well by the fandom.

Which is weird because the original movie is good ninja turtle movie but is objectively very bad. The new movie was on a whole other level.

LOL, what? The original Turtle movie is recognized as one of the best comic book movies ever made. IGN included it on their best comic book movies list, and considering it had to compete with the best DC and Marvel movies on that list, it says a lot.

The first movie has the best writing, themes, actual emotion, and heart of any of the movies. The fight scenes are also fantastic for the actors in those suits.

And terrible acting and too many huge coincidences. I don't care much for ign lists. I love that movie but there is too much wrong with it. I like the bodies on the rubber suits but not the heads. The fighting was surprisingly good though.

RaphaelinSTL 08-08-2014 08:35 PM

I don't know, it's looking like a majority of the people who really didn't like the film have been more vocal but today it seems more and more positive things are coming out. I for sure fall in the negative crowd though, just not a lot there for me to enjoy really.

Terrible acting? Everyone is really on par in that movie and it has a well thought out and perfectly paced script with tons of hidden genius beneath it. The only one who's a little lackluster is the guy who plays Danny but even then, he fits the role of awkward weird kid in the early 90s perfectly. Everything fits with that film, that's why it's considered such a classic and untouchable.

The only people I know who enjoy that movie are huge ninja turtles fans and young adults who haven't seen it since they were kids. Calling it a classic is a but much. In the opening scene they inconspicuously work together to steal a wallet and then a ninja grabs it in broad daylight. The delivery of the lines by the Turtles is often cringe-worthy and the fact that splinter has to save the day despite the fact that he's malnourished and beaten bloody is silly.

But it's okay for April in the new movie (no training mind you for anything that would warrant fighting with Shredder) to kick Shredder to his demise? At least we get more of a character arc for all of the Turtles instead of being treated as background characters for April.

The Turtles have fantastic voice acting and all four of them might actually be my favorite interpretations of the characters. Hardly cringe worthy.

I can see a little bit of your point with the opening scene, but it's not like that scene isn't justified in the notion that there is a silent crime wave going on that's essentially right beneath our faces but it moves without a sound. If you don't want to buy the concept that's one thing....but unlike the new Michael Bay film, those scenes play into a cohesive plot that ties everything together within how the Foot Clan operates.

Yes, this movie is a classic in my eyes.

I get what he's probably trying to say. I am nowhere NEAR comparing this new TMNT movie to the Dark Knight but I'm sure it was annoying for Batman fans when they were all pumped on TDK back in 2008 but they had to constantly hear older fans rant and rave why Tim Burton's film was better. It's someone like me comparing something new to something older that could almost seem like I just have my nostalgia goggles on. I don't. I left them at home when I went to see the new movie wanting to enjoy it....but there's hardly a "movie" there for me to like and I bring up the first movie because it had people working on it that actually seemed like they cared about what they were making.

That is not true, I wanted to like this movie. The problem is it's not good. I want to like future TMNT movies, but they should be good first. If you like something just because you're a fan and you're supposed to like it....that's even worse.

It may actually be that the majority of us like the movie. But people are determined to make the least useful polls possible. And I'm sure if I made a simple good or bad poll, people would be like, "We got too many polls!"

Could you edit this to take out the Spoiler please? I have been watching the movies since I was a kid in the 90s but as I got older it for harder to objectively enjoy. I only watch them when I'm feeling pumped about the Turtles. I bought the trilogy on blu Ray this summer. I just don't think it holds up well.

You're right about that. If Platinum Dunes is able to continue making TMNT movies then a lot of people won't like them. It has nothing to do with nostalgia and everything to do with a production company that can't make a good movie let alone a good TMNT movie.

I hope they keep it. I love the Turtles in the movie and the effects but honestly I hope they wear less accessories. Really my only gripe about the appearance.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've read it a while. The first TMNT film is viewed the same way the 1989 Batman film is, they're classics and the first great comic book movies to come after Superman.

Objectively of course.

Bossanova 08-09-2014 11:05 AM

first off, i agree with everyone on here, my opinion is no better than any of yours. all that being said, the old movies which i love and are right up there with Ghostbusters, have so many flaws in it, for instance when Dons skating through the sewer after splinters speech and you see a human hand come into frame, if that were in the new movie people would tear it to shreds and boycott everything from this point forward. I guess for me its just easy to look past flaws that dont interfere with a good story, which is all any of these movies and comics are. the title itself lets you know it will be full of ridiculous concepts, which is my cup'o tea.

Look, I like the first movie and all, but this is only true if you ignore the barrage of slapstick and one-liners that accompany the fight scenes. When it's on, it's on, but the movie has some major tone problems. I think the most remarkable thing about it may be how relatively faithful a comic adaptation it is at a time when that just wasn't a thing, and of course it's remarkably better than its sequels.

Actually Cubed, if you were to walk up to an unbiased movie fan and try to compare TMNT 1 to the Batman or Superman movies, you'd be laughed all the way to China.

TMNT 1 is not considered a classic by anybody except Turtles' fans.

I'd totally take the Batman comparison, just on the basis that Burton's Batman films aren't very good. You could even get away with it for any of the latter three original Superman movies.

Put me on the laughing-to-China boat for a Superman I comparison though.

ScrewtheMirageTMNT 08-10-2014 02:44 AM

To me, Burton's first Batman movie is the greatest movie of all time.

The Superman Donner cut is pretty good though.
3 wasn't great, but 4 was the dog.

I don't think you'll have to worry about if 'the majority of you like it.'

At best, this is an extremely Divided movie.

It really is The Phantom Menace all over again, which is another Highly Divided film.

For people who say that's laughable...truth is, that isn't an 'every single person hates it' movie that some people might think, especially when it first came out.

Even in today's age, on IMDB Phantom Menace has a 6.6 (higher than the new turtles film, which has a 6.4). Even the first Turtles film almost has the same mark as The Phantom Menace (1990 Turtles has a 6.7).

No. Batman '89 was respected by critics and fans, TMNT 1990 was respected by fans (mostly children).

I love tmnt 1990 but you can't compare it to Batman

Part of me wonders if that has to do with age of the franchise. Back when TMNT came out the franchise was only 5 years old. Batman was MUCH older. Many critics grew up with Batman so it wasn't so outlandish to have an big budget Batman flick. Not saying that the 1st Turtle movie is comparable to Burton's Batman, but it is something that has to be taken into account.

At least Phantom Menace had Liam f.ucking Neeson playing as Qui Gon Jin. Now if only if they took out Jar Jar Binks the film would have been mediocre to good.

Only time will tell. Batman was already 60ish years old when Batman 89 came out, hopefully Turtles will still be around when the franchise reaches that age. My guess is that they will always exist in one form or another

Nobody was arguing that Phantom Menace was better than any of the previous star wars films. Even defenders of the film were quick to admit it was the worst star wars film. With the new turtles movie most people (not everyone) will agree that it is not the worst turtles movie made, and many agree that its second only to the 1990 film

Shark_Blade 08-10-2014 06:16 AM

Actually I think Phantom Menace is the greatest SW film ever. Reason as below:

Quote:

1. Phantom Menace
2. Return of the Jedi (nice but good God, George Lucas had to add in those godawful cartoony CGIs in the blu ray version.. I much prefer original untainted version. Reflect better for that time period's film quality)
3. A New Hope
4. Emperor's Strike Back
5. Attack of the Clones (terrible big baby acting by Anakin)
6. Revenge of the Sith (terrible big baby acting by Anakin)

I can list loads of things why I like Phantom Menace. Jarr Jarr is the only jarring (pun intended) thing I guess but I can easily overlook that.

Pros

- Duel of Fates : Most kickass epic song ever to be produced in SW history imo.

http://i.imgur.com/fOr4X7I.gif
http://i.imgur.com/UeKo1b2.gif
http://i.imgur.com/RC045hF.gif

- Darth Maul > Darth Vader/Darth Sidious/Darth whatevers. He's lethal and dangerous, quick, pose a threat and look the most menacing. He's not slow or such a drag like Vader. And he doesn't talk much or drawl or monologue on and on like the others that bores you to tears. Action speaks louder than words.

http://i.imgur.com/NDNYsND.gif
http://i.imgur.com/M1ffdut.jpg

- First time ever 2 Jedis fighting together
- Liam Neeson is a great actor. When he talks I can't help but put my entire focus and attention on him. Very charismatic and gripping.

http://i.imgur.com/eN0G0Kq.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/lSXCxmo.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/10iyIp9.jpg

- Planet Naboo is beautiful. The city, the Palace, it's interior, magnificent.
- Costumes are excellent.

http://i.imgur.com/XDbb8bd.gif
http://i.imgur.com/yGli0gy.gif

- Female empowerment with modern style: Queen Amidala. I love that ethnic style (kinda japanese makeup) and fashion she got going, very unique and sophisticated.

- Story is straightforward back to basic saving damsel in distress (but the girl is not completely helpless or useless. No, Amidala was strong), yet immersive and enjoyable for me. And I guess I'm traditional in that sense, I love saving the girl kinda story.

And I'm sure there's loads other reasons to love Phantom Menace that I've yet to cover.

So for TMNT to be compared to it by fans is such a huge honor.
