Bootleg/Fake Neca Box Set Turtles?

Hello everyone!

Its common knowledge that there is an abundance of bootleg/fake Neca turtles coming out of China. As the bootleggers probably never got their hands on the moulds for the extra pieces found in the clamshell packaged turtles the fakes always seem to be sold in the tube packaging (without said accessories). My question is whether or not there is/was ever bootlegs/fakes of the box set of four turtles in the long Neca box (both coloured and black and white versions)? I have read that there possibly may have been (but this is usually conjecture) or people had seen some for sale that looked fishy etc. but I have never seen any real proof or pictures from people that had bought them. So do they exist? Obviously anything that was a convention exclusive such as the box sets that contain the extra accessories can be counted out for the same reason as the clamshells but what about the other box sets that contain just the four turtles?

Cheers!

I've only seen them on tubes. The quality varies wildly so I never dared take the plunge.

I have in fact seem box sets of 4 available at Chinese websites but it's hard to tell if they are bootlegs considering the toys were made in China in the first place. It might just be left overs or taken straight from the factory.

DVD 09-04-2014 05:17 PM

As all of the Neca toys were made here in the first place...
Anyways, the tubed toys are, on the whole excellent value.
The box sets turn up from time to time, as do the clam shells.
Box sets range in price from around £100-300 depending upon the seller. Not everyone is holding out for silly money. The BW sets are very infrequent.
If these were in deed bootlegged they'd be cheaper than four tubed Turtles, and I've never seen any at that price.

Sosetsuken 09-04-2014 06:00 PM

yes, that is the funny thing the bootlegs could indeed be coming out of a factory next door to or even the same factory as the bona fide necas used to - its all made in china :tlol:
i guess what i meant by "coming out of china" was that a lot of listings of them on auction websites are listed as new and ship from china and are of course bootlegs.

yes i wonder if the box sets people have seen on chinese websites are indeed actually the real deal? i assume that china did actually get some real products there as well? i guess the price might be some sort of indicator on those, if it was very cheap then its probably too good to be true and thus fake-but then again its still not 100 proof and only speculation/assumption.

madyankees 09-04-2014 06:28 PM

Yes I have bought the bw turtles that came in a box set on eBay. There was white paint peeling off at some of the joints revealing the green underneath. I got it from China and returned them eventually.

madyankees 09-04-2014 06:31 PM

Just to add on. The "bootleg" set also came with missing paint apps on Leo's katana handles. And generally the white color on all the figures were a very dirty white

Sosetsuken 09-05-2014 01:01 AM

interesting. did they have some of the other bootleg signs such as the harder shell and bandana plastic and arched foot etc. ?

also did the box look like the real neca box set box in terms of artwork and text and those kind of things?

you should put some pics up as it would be helpful for anyone else in the future looking for proof and tell tell signs of box set fakes

cheers

Sadly I no longer have the pictures. Phone died so pictures went along with it. Actually the seller only gave me the insert of the box set. It did come with the artwork of the weapons in the background. The "outer" box with all the cool artwork was not included (yes I was that desperate to get myself a set of the NECAs back then).

Surprisingly I do remember the front shell was quite soft. I don recall much about the bandana though. I had the set for one night before shipping them back to China the very next day.

Seedkiller 09-05-2014 11:49 AM

I have a real set and a ko set. Can't tell any differences whatsoever. I guess maybe one or two of the ko's bandana is slightly harder.........no big deal

mmmm i wonder if that means that the seller had at some point a fake box to go along with the insert and turtles but lost it or whatever - or that the bootleggers attempted at some point to make the box, insert and turtles but only got round to doing the insert and turtles - or that you were sent a combination of a genuine insert from a real box but fake turtles?

its still hard to tell then if the long neca boxes were indeed copied

sorry to hijack your thread i just have 1 question and im done, didnt think it was worth starting a new thread.
does anyone know of a place i can score the black and white figures loose? i need 3 to complete a set (the 3 i had met tragic ends) all i have is Leo and the box. i tried Ebay and Amazon, but all i find is them in box for 3-500. one guy has a loose set up right now but for some reason the clown thinks they are worth 400 even with a Mikey that has a broken torso joint

smitbro2 09-05-2014 02:41 PM

Question

I have a question as well that probably doesn't warrant its own topic if we are already on the subject. I really want an authentic NECA Raph, and I noticed ToyWiz has them for sale in the tube packaging. What are the chances that it is the bootleg version? I know ToyWiz can have mixed reviews but would they stoop to selling these bootlegs as legit at prices of $68?

Bravesfanjd 09-05-2014 02:48 PM

With so many bootlegs out there I just bought those rather then try to decide which ones were real since I didn't have the money for a boxed set

It's probably legit, but I wouldn't put it past those shady f*cks.

Seedkiller 09-05-2014 04:00 PM

Tube versions are considered ko's! Toywiz is jackin fools

smitbro2 09-05-2014 04:32 PM

Not to defend toywiz, but weren't there legit tube figures? Guess I'm just trying to be hopeful since I can never find clamshell raph

kidvid20 09-05-2014 04:55 PM

ToywiZ is a ripoff. Jackin up prices on figs when you can go on eBay and get them cheaper

Heather Breckel 09-05-2014 05:05 PM

Yeah, the tubes are definitely not legit and it's horrible Toywiz is selling the set for $200. They do appear to have a legit Mikey and Leo though.

smitbro2 09-05-2014 06:10 PM

Well that's disappointing to hear. I could have sworn there were legit tube necas. Guess I'll keep stalking ebay for clamshell

Powder 09-05-2014 06:15 PM

There are legit tube NECA's, but those ain't it.

smitbro2 09-05-2014 06:31 PM

Hmm so there are legit tubes then? Guess I could order one and look it over before taking it out of package. I'm desperate lol. Clamshells are too rare :(

Powder 09-05-2014 07:05 PM

I can appreciate your desperation but I would strongly suggest avoiding doing biz with Toywiz. They rip people off constantly, among a host of other bad things.

You won't be able to tell just looking through the tube. You'll only be able to tell when handing (if at all). That's how good they are.
Let's face the facts people. All of these ko's come from the same exact mold, and most likely are made by the same people who did the Neca run. Neca just lost license and the molds were just there. So while Neca won't sell em through stores, people from that factory decided to capitalize and make a few dollars off of what they already had been making.
With all of that being said, I got my ko's years ago so the quality was fine. There's no telling what type of materials/plastics they're using now. I got a ko Hulk and it stunk to high heaven because they used cheap material. Who knows, maybe these new turtles suffer the same. Just ask somebody (maybe from here) that has em, and see what they think. Obviously that's what this thread was started for, but for some reason, nobody is talking about them from experience of recent. It's kinda funny because back in the day the same subject was talked about em when people started to see em pop up on eBay. Everybody shared their experiences, but the new ones....not so much.

smitbro2 09-05-2014 10:40 PM

Hmmm. I thought you could tell by blueish shell/sloppy or mismatched paint/arched feet(which maybe you wouldn't see through packaging). Well regardless sorry for derailing topic. Not sure what I'll do yet. Maybe something will pop up on ebay soon. Thanks everyone for your input.

There are legit NECA Tube packaging, they lack the entra accessories the Clam pacgages came with.

But they are seemingly the most bootlegged ones.

thanks for the link unfortunately i was late to the party again (always seems to be like that with me lol) and the auction was already won to another buyer...

i found a MIB b&w set for 350 and just broke down and got it so i guess my hunt is done

what do you think real/fake is there any other way to prove the authenticity of the tube figures?
i have the tube figures with red headbands

Sosetsuken 09-12-2014 05:43 PM

i think other than actually seeing them in person, so to speak and then possibly handling them its hard to tell. i guess if someone did buy them and they turned out to be bootlegs they would have a very good case for a refund as the sellers make such a point of pointing out how they are genuine.

UNDR 09-12-2014 07:46 PM

Got my set of Neca BL and Im pretty happy with them.

akamcfly 10-14-2020 02:12 AM

hi! rescued this thread from the depths of the forum...

i found a box of the pack of 4 turtles. the seller argues that they are authentic and shows me this picture, but i would like to know if some bootlegs had the NECA branding on the sole before buying.

could someone help me with this question?

thanks!

ProdUK 10-14-2020 04:02 AM

Yes the bootlegs have the same branding.

akamcfly 10-14-2020 04:53 AM

thanks for the info. the price was to good to be true...

D Piddy 1982 10-14-2020 04:55 AM

I had this dilemma a few years ago (before eBay become REALLY saturated with Chinese imports).

The figures are from the same moulds, so any markings will carry across.

From memory I believe some of the differences are:
- Chinese imports do not have ab-crunch
- Front shell is not as soft as genuine NECA
- Something about the bandana (soft or hard, can't remember)
- Obviously NECA never did coloured headbands, so they must be red to stand a chance at being genuine NECA.

I have some Chinese video game Turtles. Got them a few months after the originals were released at SDCC. They are very good quality. Maybe paint application and quality isn't on par with my other NECA stuff, but it;s nothing that jumps out at you.

I also bought a genuine mirage Leo a few years ago that was missing the sword sheaths and a knee pad. So I bought a KO one for like £10 and took the parts off that. Now you would never know.

akamcfly 10-14-2020 09:08 AM

the guy who wants to sell them is asking me for 80€. full set, opened but box included.
i have a clamshell 2008 tmnt set mint, never opened and i want to have a loose Donatello... but i'm not going to take the risk.

thanks for the info. :)

inaheap 10-14-2020 03:13 PM

I have a set of the colored bandana bootlegs and a set of the real NECA ones. There really is very little difference. The ties for the bandana and belt are softer on the legit figures. The chest plate too. The colors are little different on the skin and shells. The thing I find easiest to see is a slightly glossy bandana. The legit figures are more matt style. As far as the quality they run pretty much even. I don't think my legit set is better quality than the bootlegs; just a little different. Plus I don't worry so much about damaging the bootlegs handling them.

I'm no expert but I don't think the bootlegs ever came in the box, just the tubes. I suppose it's possible he's selling a bootleg set of figures with a legit box but if everything else looks legit then it's probably original.

Unless I'm wrong about the box thing, haha.

TCRI 10-14-2020 04:26 PM

I got two bootlegs (red bandanas) in tube and two legit clamshell ones. I got them about 10 years ago. Back then, legit ones were going for £30-£60, and I thought that was too much. If only I knew...

Anyway. The quality, paint app and articulation on the bootlegs is very good. But since there are legit tube ones, here's my observations on how the real and bootlegs differ:

THEY STINK
The smell eventually wears off. The plastic used is quite possibly cheaper.

SHELL COLOUR VARIES
There's a grey-blue tint to the bootleg's shells.

PAINT RUB
Rubbing the black paint will transfer onto your finger.

STIFFER PLASTICS
Compared to the legit ones, the bandana, plastron and belt are all much stiffer. Legit ones, especially on the plastron, feel very flexible, almost silicone-like.

BENT FEET
Legit ones have flat feet. Bootlegs (maybe not all) have very visible arched feet.
