Would this show be better if it was binge watch?

Do you think that you would have notice less of this season's problems if you had binge watch it?

ssjup81 09-23-2014 11:18 PM

I binge watched the show up until Pizzaface, as that was the most recent ep out. Still was enjoyable.

Gunpowder 09-24-2014 12:32 AM

I just started watching the show this year, so I had to binge watch the DVDs to catch up. And I loved every minute of it. So I'd say yes.

(Watching the same episodes over and over again will obviously burn you out, though.)

pannoni1 09-24-2014 03:13 PM

I find that at certain checkpoints is the best time to marathon, especially after Season finales to grasp what played out in the previous season, though a few weak episodes that didn't contribute to the season in general I would pass on. I've only watched most episodes once, so refreshing what happened after so many episodes would help since it isn't like the OT when I would keep watching the same 65 episodes over and over again until Season 4 started, and those reruns made it easier to understand the series in full.

CyberCubed 09-24-2014 03:32 PM

I think any show is more enjoyable when you watch it quickly rather than waiting for one episode every week or every two months.

This is true, but it doesn't mean the show will be any better, per se.

I feel that the Nick show has very few problems, I am huuuge fan of it & haven't been very critical of it. But, I think the issues it does have are somewhat glaring, which would only make them harder to swallow or whatever in high doses, I imagine. So I voted no.

I think the few problems the show has is the inability to move on from the Kraang storyline. Its hard to believe they'll still be doing the Kraang stuff well into Season 3.

The Season 2 finale was almost a repeat of Season 1's except it was darker since the good guys "lost" this time around rather than the happy ending of Season 1's finale.

Powder 09-24-2014 05:42 PM

Yeah man, that's the kinda thing I mean. If you're not big on the Kraang plots, April/Donnie, Mikey's personality, etc, you might find it difficult to do episodes consecutively.

ssjup81 09-24-2014 05:48 PM

Surprisingly, the Kraang stuff amuses me.

That may be true but I think if I have watch it through a sitting, I wouldn't be constantly nit picking each episode on some minor details like April's family or school, Shredder's lack of strategy, any character's lack of a reaction, or anything that has do with continuity. I just wouldn't have time to think about these things.

plastroncafe 09-24-2014 06:00 PM

I think there's something to be said for the digestion between episodes, rather than the mainlining of one right after another.

Up until the most recent break I watched them when they aired, but now that I've moved and we've ditched our cable package...I guess I'll be seeing them when I see them.

Maybe I'll view the show more favorably with less time to think about nitpicks.
Time will tell.

Jinxed-Outtaluck 09-24-2014 06:00 PM

I've also only just started watching this show this year. I binged watched for about a week to catch up to 'Vengeance is Mine' and then joined everyone else in dragging ourselves through the hiatus.

But from the first episode I saw (Parasitica..before I started over from the beginning) I was HOOKED. This show is SO funny and clever and unique. Its interpretations of the past series' and its comic book feel is perfect.

I voted "yes" to the poll because watching each episode one right after the other only gave me enough time to love what I was watching. There was nothing to be critical of because I was having too much of a good time having my own personal marathon :)

I remember going through the same situation with Breaking Bad. I binge watch through the first four season and then fifth season. After that I was hype on this show, I had craving to see each episode from week to week. Some people were disappointed with the ending but I guess I was too much on a hype high to be critical.

SAME! Thank you. I've read alot of good reviews from people but I've also seen alot of disappointment with this show and alot of people comparing it to the old stuff or wishing for something different. But no show is perfect and even though TMNT 2012 is no exception you have to admit it's good. It's better than good. It's great! And I love it and I think I'll stand behind it no matter what.

People have to accept that the kraang are the A threat and shredder is the B threat in this version. Shredder just wants to kill the heroes and possibly rule the city. The kraang want to conquer the world and kill everyone on it. That more than just a contained revenge story.

Plus if shredder is down he's down but the kraang are an entire race of alien invaders.

Well now, maybe they have to conquer Earth because maybe another alien species was in Dimension X and swallowed up most of the resources, so they have to kind of movie their civilization to survive. Would be great if that other race were the Triceratons.

That and the fact that The Kraang should be written as an even bigger threat than they are now, even after the finale.

The story could be even better if it comes to the point where the sake of Earth's annihilation rests on The Turtles and Shredder realizing they may actually have to work together and comingle to rid the Kraang from destroying them all.

That would be pretty cool except Shredder has already proven that he cares nothing for the human race, including himself. He's so blinded by revenge and power I don't think he would ever go out of his way to save anyone or anything (except maybe Karai at some point).

This going to sound crazy, but I kind of want the Kraang and maybe Kraang Prime specifically to have this tragic backstory of how originally they use to be peace loving utroms that came to Earth, took some dinosaurs and turn them into highly evolve creatures but one day the Triceratons turn on them like that one scene from the classic Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Kraang Prime somehow survived the genocide and ever since then, He has been on this war path of revenge.

Netkeeper 09-24-2014 07:05 PM

Generally, I prefer to watch my shows as quickly as possible. I get a thrill out of marathoning the **** out of a series in only a few days with little sleep.

But for this show, since it really is not my cup of tea, I can only handle one episode at a time.

THGhost 09-24-2014 07:40 PM

If you can tolerate a lot of Kraang plots and "mutant of the week" villains, then yes. Binge watch it. If not, then don't. Like many others, those are my only problems with the show.

snake 09-24-2014 07:48 PM

For certain episodes, yes.

Well, to be honest, I don't watch the show for the plots, I watch the show for the interactions between the Turtles and some of the humans they have on here. Granted though, this in itself is tough, because the show seems to be scared if it doesn't have action in for too long, like, 3 minutes tops.

Shark_Blade 09-24-2014 08:55 PM

I have no problem with the show whatsoever really. Oh except for Timothy.

Jinxed-Outtaluck 09-24-2014 09:47 PM

Oh my- Thank you. This^

Is there a reason so many people like him? Because he's honestly really annoying and I don't know how he turned into such an "important" character.

I found him annoying, but didn't have an actual prob with him looking back because he was intentionally written to be annoying.

I still don't get how people found Zach annoying when you have characters like Timothy around.

CyberCubed 09-24-2014 09:50 PM

How was Timothy a major character? He was only in like 2 episodes before being mutated.

Probably because he was in 2 too many episodes. He should have been just a one episode kind of character.

Jinxed-Outtaluck 09-24-2014 09:56 PM

I don't want to turn this into a conversation about Timothy. I guess that's getting off the thread subject but I just overall don't understand the point of his character. The few episodes he was in (even while binge watching) were pretty lame to sit through.

ONly one I liked was his first one, but only because I just thought it was good character development to see Donnie training someone and interacting with others besides his brothers and April.

Showed off Donnie's compassionate side despite being completely annoyed with him and jump started Donnie's wanting to work on retromutagen.

Oh and to NOT be like Tomothy, trying to do things the easy way. lol

Davetello 09-24-2014 10:33 PM

Edited as I thought I'd opened the 4kids section. Lol. D'oh.

Anyway yeah, the show would be more enjoyable if it was binged watched on first viewing. But then that applies to practically everything. This 'weekly episode' thing is becoming pretty primitive and I hope that in thirty years everything follows the Netflix model. But I doubt it.

^This. Lots of shows I could never get into, until Netflix, when I could sit down and watch episode to episode, uninterrupted. This was especially helpful when watching a show like 24, in which the episodes and story arcs are super interlinked, and you could miss or forget something if you had to wait between hiatus and season premieres.

Yeah, it's just a bit outdated now. I know people like the 'watercooler' effect, but it's just too difficult to become engrossed in a show when you have to wait a week between episodes (or longer in the case of this show).

I suppose counter-arguments would be that we'd have longer to wait in between seasons, and that the gap between seasons would replicate the problem of the gap between weekly episodes in a single season, but it would still be more preferable to what happens now.

Technically we could just watch shows which are already completed/well into their run, and let new shows build up over a few seasons before watching - but who's likely to do that when a fresh new exciting show comes along? Nobody really has the patience to let it build up, and it's a shame because I feel I'd have enjoyed shows like OUAT and American Horror Story even more if I could have watched seasons over a day or two.

The only problem I have with Timothy is his voice actor. If Roger Craig Smith didn't voice EVERY SINGLE recurring character in Regular Show, I wouldn't mind him, because I wouldn't be so damn sick of hearing him. He certainly has the voice for it, but he's overdone, if you ask me.

The problem with that setup would be that every show would have to be mass-produced, which would inevitably lessen the quality. (But maybe I'm wrong about that. Who knows.) Shows ARE more enjoyable when watched that way, though. And I agree that the weekly episode deal is annoying, albeit necessary for commercials and marketing. Plus it's basically the standard method by now, so I don't see it changing.

Yeah, it probably would dilute the quality of shows, at least in the short term as it became the default setup. And the reasons you allude to are why I said I doubt it will ever happen - they need to the money from commercials and marketing to keep the show going. Netflix can do it due to subscription fees but we're obviously not going to pay multiple fees to multiple companies just for the ability to binge watch.

ssjup81 09-24-2014 11:25 PM

I don't mind waiting a week between episodes. Guess I'm old-fashioned. The only reason I binge watched the Nick series was because I could and because I was so far behind.

The only thing I would dislike is inconsistent airings or long breaks. Like with live action shows, it airs for it's 20 something weeks, a few breaks and a long summer break. Doesn't bother me as I can theorize and look forward to the upcoming season. Wish animated shows did the same, but I only say this because of the inconsistency of the breaks.

I suppose it's just the opportunity to have the choice of whether to watch weekly or all in one go. That's what appeals.

Yeah, the breaks in between eps for this show have been wildly inconsistent. It's distracting.

Edit: I still haven't seen the last four eps of season 2. I will over the next coupla nights.

It depends on the patience. I was an avid Lost fan, but then, I was just getting frustrated because it seemed like it was 3 minutes of show, then 5 minutes of commercial, and nothing seemed to move the plot along, so, i just gave up. If you don't move that plot substantially, or let key character developments kick in, the show starts to get stale, stagnant somewhat.

Luckyday 09-24-2014 11:52 PM

It just the pacing feels too fast for a moment of introspection. It's like there would be a big revelation and we before we could get to a character's reaction...it cuts to black.
