Why are some people hesitant of, or even outright hate, Tumblr?

I really don't understand why some people consider Tumblr a bad website/blog. Tumblr has a different variety of people who are all special in one way or another. Generally, I think Tumblr has a very nice environment, so I don't really understand the hate. Can someone give me a valid reason why they dislike/hate/are weary of Tumblr? I would like to see some feedback.

Powder 05-22-2015 05:38 PM

Tumblr is fine as a website, it's just overrun with drama queens who look for problems where there are none.

Shark_Blade 05-22-2015 05:43 PM

Those people just don't know how to enjoy life (yes tumblr is one aspect of it, a modern one at that).

Just unfollow those people you don't like and you should be fine. :tcool:

Sahtori 05-22-2015 06:01 PM

I got Tumblr, because I have to fallow the 'click' ... Or I loose watchers ... etc etc. I'm still after two years thinking what THEME I should take.

Katie 05-22-2015 06:57 PM

Drama. Special pronouns. Otherkin. People who try to be the "most" special. Crabs in a bucket. People with limited life experience who bite at people who actually do live in the real world.

Take that stuff away and it might be a good site.

Netkeeper 05-23-2015 12:49 AM

People hate Tumblr because:
  • It's an echo chamber
  • They have ruined the term "trigger warning"
  • Their tagging habits. "negative tw", "hands tw", tagging selfies or drawings of ****ing characters as "scopophobia" THAT ISN'T WHAT SCOPOPHOBIA IS YOU ****ING IDIOTS
  • Tucutes. I ****ing hate tucutes. [People who think being trans is a feel u can feel with ur feels and isn't due to debilitating mental disconnect between what the mind thinks the body should look and how the body actually looks; it's a ****ing medical condition]
  • A few years back they had a bunch of pro-anaorexia blogs. Ew.
  • Their attitudes toward mental illness
  • "Don't follow me if"
  • People that think being gay or trans is a choice and that if you CHOOSE to be cis and het you're awful
  • Tumblr asexuals that don't know what being asexual actually means
  • "Demisexual" which was a term made up by some kid on a forum
  • Trans-ethnic and trans-fat
  • To say nothing of their otherkin culture there. Actual kids that eat dog food because they claim to be dog-kin.
  • Oh and Tucutes. The term tucute was even coined by some chick that thinks cis people are witches and being trans is some sort of Madoka RP thing

I have some ****ing war stories.

pennydreadful 05-23-2015 01:15 AM

AFAIK there are still pro-ana blogs there; I saw one this week that was using fitness tags on its posts. :ohwell:

My view of tumblr: "Look, a social site that has a neat picture or post about something I just searched for online."

http://i.imgur.com/TNYNP6A.gif

pennydreadful 05-23-2015 02:10 AM

Honestly, to me it's just like any other social site. There's good stuff there, there's bad stuff, there's cool people, there's douchey people. It's a mixed bag - I just stick with the content and people I enjoy and steer clear of the content and people that I don't. The only people I actually talk to on Tumblr are all TMNT fans so I'm not really exposed to any more high-level douchery than I would be, say... here in the 'drome. :trazz:

Candy Kappa 05-23-2015 03:14 AM

Netkeeper hit the nail head on. It's a great place, but oh man can you fall into some weird ****. Or attract weird ****.

A friend of mine got, for around two months attacked constantly by some sad poly-otherkin (one of the kin was Bosimer, which is an elf race in a video game:lol:) simply because my friend expressed her opinion on snowflake pronouns and that they/them was far better since it's an actual pronoun.

Oh no, the tucutes and their army of crazy pronouns!

The worst part about some of these Tumblr people is that not all of them are kids, some of them are my age. That's scary.

TheSkeletonMan939 05-23-2015 08:36 AM

I kinda figured this would be a Purple Kraken thread.

Netkeeper's got the right idea though.

PangolinFeets 05-23-2015 10:28 AM

I use Tumblr fairly often and rarely encounter anything that annoys me. I basically only use it for art, fan art, and comics stuff. A lot of artists, animators, and web comic creators exclusively use Tumblr to display their work. That's why I use it.

This. Tumblr's reputation is that of a collection of "special snowflakes" who can be triggered by the slightest of things and have a special pronoun to show just how special they are. And oh gooodness "Headmates"....just because you really like Loki from Avengers doesn't mean he's part of your multiple personalities.

CyberCubed 05-23-2015 06:38 PM

I actually found tumblr confusing to navigate at first. Most of it is just people reblogging pictures of something, but if they don't tag their posts they all get lost and jumbled together.

Its also rather hard to actually communicate and have a discussion like a forum. You post a reply to something and you have no idea if anyone will ever read it. Its not like a forum.

Powder 05-23-2015 08:05 PM

Yeah, I don't understand how/why people use it for socializing. It's good to keep tabs on artists you like but the interactivity of it all is lacking, to me.
& your experience there will more or less be fine if you stick to your niche interests but it's very easy to fall into traps...

IndigoErth 05-23-2015 08:10 PM

Agree with finding it confusing. I have an account, but rarely use it. Someone gave me an attitude over something once and I was so annoyed wondering how you just simply reply directly to the damn person. lol Mostly I just... look at stuff.

If there is that much "specialness" infesting it... I swear, I've never been the trolling sort, but there is a tiny part of me that would be almost just a little curious to see how quickly it goes up in flames... :P

Lethal Lullaby 05-23-2015 08:35 PM

Tumblr's okay.

One of my friends has a Tumblr just to find the most ridiculous posts/pics/whatever and share them with me and some of our other friends. Then we'd all have a good laugh about it.

I still probably wouldn't get one, since I'd probably never use it. :P

I don't really have any problems with Tumblr, There's pretty much a Tumblr for anything, Which I think its good.

Netkeeper 05-23-2015 08:45 PM

I've never understood how someone can find it confusing to communicate on Tumblr. Just reblog the post and add what you want to say. Common sense.

TigerClaw 05-23-2015 08:49 PM

You can find all sorts of TMNT tumblr pages, Even ones based on specific characters, Like I found this one recently, Its a Tumblr devoted to Mona Lisa and its all about RP.
http://lovely-lizard-lady.tumblr.com/

You can find all sorts of nice Tumblr pages, And just ignore the bad ones.

I'm curious now - what sort of pronouns are we talking here? I'm familiar with people using xe/zir type pronouns (which personally I'm ok with) but I'm guessing there's a sub-level of crazy pronouns here connected to otherkin?

I'd love to hear some of your war stories, Net.

That feels so horribly redundant to me though... like I'm reblogging what they said? While their comment is attached to my post? So I'm essentially posting my own thing a second time, right? Bleh. lol Tumblr tried to get creative with communication and made it weird...

Yeah, I'm okay with xe/zir type pronouns myself, because hey this awful language NEEDS a singular gender neutral pronoun that isn't ****ing "it". Ew.

No, I'm talking about these:

It's no different than quoting a forum post.

You can also PM and leave comment on people's posts without reposting if the OP has set it that way (basically the same as Facebook). I dunno, I find it a good fit for me - even if you don't want to talk to anyone, there are still lots of pictures and articles and cool stuff to read/enjoy and post for your own enjoyment. I think of it as a scrapbook with an option to talk to people.

I'm also very anal about tagging my own stuff so I can go back and find it again when I need to.

Katie 05-24-2015 07:02 AM

I saw a Tumblr once of a person who claimed to be a transpokemon and used special pronouns, which were changed daily. If you didn't use their preferred pronoun, no matter how innocently you came upon their blog or how uninitiated you were in the ways of Tumblr, they pitched fits and their followers would all swoop in and reblog about how insensitive the poor sap was. They once told an 11 year old to kill herself because she didn't use the preferred pronoun "sprout" when she commented on a drawing.

Also, stuff like what Cure posted is why alot of "non-special snowflakes" avoid Tumblr like the plague.

Candy Kappa 05-24-2015 07:32 AM

What, there's no Turtle or Ninja pronouns? I am disappoint.

Katie 05-24-2015 07:44 AM

I'm sure their are, just keep looking.

I'm sure there is a trans ninja turtle superwholock with Pokemon and Marvel head mates out there raging on the het/cis normies who keep leaving the true turtlecest canon out of the Nick show.

Amaranthus 05-24-2015 07:52 AM

I used to pretend to be a dog when I was little.
Does this make me a dogkin?

TigerClaw 05-24-2015 08:19 AM

a lot of people use Tumblr to post animated GIFs.

This all sounds good, but I'm gonna stop you at that last bit: that post Cure posted was a meme. Everyone made fun of that SuperWhoLockshithead

All this. Tumblr should only be used for art. Don't get me started on tumblr "humor" either.

Yeah, You usually find fan art posted on Tumblr pages.

Leo656 05-24-2015 01:01 PM

I know nothing about Tumblr, but reading this stuff reminds me of this one time my wife got sniped at on FB by some obsessive Xena fans. She's like, the biggest Xena fan ever, so naturally when she joined FB she thought joining a Xena-based discussion page would be a great idea. Please forgive her naivety. Anyways, apparently some super-militant lesbians ran the group, and most of the conversations turned into the lesbian fans projecting their own interpretation into the material - which is fine - and attacking anyone who wasn't 100% in agreement - which is Not Fine.

So anyways, my wife tried to make a point about how what's great about that show is that a lot of things are IMPLIED but not stated outright, so people can enjoy the show whether they're gay or straight or whatever. OHHHHH BOY. She got every single comment you can imagine, from "straight people can't GET Xena, they can't UNDERSTAND it," to "Stop trying to take OUR show away from us," to "you don't belong in OUR fandom", to "kill yourself". I mean, she's probably been watching that show longer than some of those people have been cognizant or even born yet. But because she's straight, has zero problem with gay people but makes a choice NOT to watch her favorite show as being overtly lesbian-themed, and suddenly she's an insensitive, horrible, awful person who isn't properly equipped to watch her favorite TV show. Then they blocked her from the group, which by that point was a gift.

Seems like the entire internet is full of these types nowadays. Which makes me wonder why anyone on Earth ever goes on more than 3 or 4 websites.

IndigoErth 05-24-2015 02:38 PM

People are seriously losing touch...Nothing wrong with a little fantasy, daydreaming, and whatnot, but taking that second foot out of reality and taking offense to people not behaving "properly" in a way that caters to your fantasy... Wtf, humanity, just wtf.

We're just self-destructing as a species, aren't we. Wars, selfishness, minds melting and losing touch with realty...

Turtles - I've seen one out there who's seems to have some kind of fantasy like that. Not even going to say where because in the end it's their own business, if they want to live in some fantasy world, well it's their own life, and I think they just want attention anyhow so I'll just leave out any identifying details, but the stuff they say... wtf. I'm sure many who frequent the unnamed site have probably run across this one. Annoying for certain reasons, though in a way it's almost become a guilty pleasure at this point to see what they come up with next.

In that case I'm totally a catkin.

If I were to leave a dead rodent on the floor, claw the window screens and throw up on the carpet, I wonder if I could rightfully throw a fit about being disrespected if anyone disagrees with those actions.
