Why are Vines popular?
 

I don't get it. They aren't funny. Deez Nutz, Chicken strips, ect.

Comedy is tricky. It's about suddenness and unexpectedness.

Vines are 6 seconds long and are perfect for this comedic gold.

Unfortunately, 98% of people are not good at this sort of comedy.

I'm guessing some Youtubers are not enjoyable to some. Like anything on the internet, they are trying to get over so an internet meme can be made.

Otherwise, I don't see the appeal too much in Vines.

Because people these days have a shorter attention span and vines pretty much feed into that. They're easy to watch and share so when someone finds one of them funny it's bound to spread faster than say, a 3-5 minute video. Why are particular vines popular? That, I can't answer. People are just lame.

Because it's amusing to watch apes & jungle men swing from them. Functional decor.

I don't know, some of them are hard to pull out once they spread. The flowering ones can be pretty though.

They seem to cater to teens' short attention spans. It seems that they'd rather watch a video that's short, funny (to their standards), and to the point as opposed to youtube vids where they might get bored after just watching over a minute. Not saying that this is always the case, but it's just a theory.

My girlfriend has shown me some vines, and while some of them can be funny, others like "Deez nutz" or whatever just seem dumb and pointless to me.

Because some people find different things funny than you do.

Because you've clearly never seen a funny vine. They're incredible. Some of the sudden jumpcuts used in them or music overlays is part of the humour I find in them personally. I don't understand the "attention span" arguement because I'll watch videos of any length. I watch 30 minute to hour long videos regularly but I still love vines. The point is a short joke and they're easy to make when the video is only a few seconds long, it doesn't have much to do with attention span.

Yeah, there are plenty of really good Vines.

No, but a lot of them sure could have been a hell of a lot shorter! They're not RKO vines.

I would like to think it is part of the internet culture. Maybe the culture is developing rapidly as a result of more accessibility and faster pace of the internet. I think that's why Vines are popular.

Because people are amused by them. I think anyone who can make a funny video in six seconds or less is pretty creative as it seems impossible. Sure, some Vines can be stupid just as some YouTube videos can be stupid, but not all of them are.

They're six second videos that are mostly comedic.

Omg the "My names Jeff" compilations and "RKO outta nowhere" are some of my faves but I do agree that the "Deez Nuts" need to stop

To OP: Are you really asking why Vines are so popular, because you think they're not funny, and you don't get 'em? How many have you actually seen? (I'd guess that you were probably shown them by one of your friends.) But there's probably hundreds of different Vines out there and some may appeal more to some than others. I'm not a big fan of the "Deez nuts" either, but I've seen some Vines that were really good IMO. ;)

they are ok in short doses. But different strokes for different folks man.

I don't know why you'd have a problem with them being popular, they're just short-form videos - it's like getting angry at Sunday comic strips. Leave The Phantom alone man, he didn't do anything to you.

Having said that, I don't understand how some people are making bulk cash on Vine. Where does it come from?

I don't really care for Vines. My little sister shows me who she follows and they all come from kids in their teens/early 20s and it just makes me shake my head. Half of them aren't even funny. Bunch of people pretending to smoke but it's really the vapor from their inhalers... I don't know; that's all I remember from her feed. That and kids cursing. It was dumb.
