List your favorite incarnation characters
Since there are so many incarnations to the turtles, I was curious to see what other fans felt were their favorites. I'm sure this has been done before, but since I haven't seen or read everything, I'm hoping to find something new I maybe missed. You can include any incarnation, comics, movies, shows, even something off the beaten path. Here are mine...

If anything, OT April is a mascot for why chicks need feminism. The main female in that show was portrayed as a nosey know it all who couldn't really handle herself & needed the assistance of big muscley men every day. & Baypril had her body exploited, if nothing else. Leonardo--1987 though 2k3 is close. I love OT Leo because while he plays the top student and eldest brother/leader well, he also knows when to lighten up and have a little fun. Raphael--1990 Movie. I like both versions of Raph, the sarcastic and angry ones and I think Movie Raph combined them well. Angry Raph can come across as a bully (particularly in Nick IMO) and sarcastic Raph can be a bit lazy at points. I think Movie Raph has the best features of both. Donatello--Geez, this one is hard but probably 2k3 Don with SOTO Don/OT Don tied in close second. I like SOTO Don's struggle with their origins; I really felt for the guy. OT Don had some vanity and superiority complex at times that made him interesting. But why 2k3 Don? Well, he's just so...nice! Seriously, I'd love to just sit and talk with this guy! His VA really knocks it out of the park here. I met the guy a few years ago and he is so involved with his fans. Gave me a couple of awesome photos during a panel. Michelangelo--OT hands down followed by Movie 1990. THIS is Mikey to me--laid back, funny without being over bearing, caring, empathic, energetic. He's a good fighter but also intelligent and capable of saving his brothers just as often as they save him. I saw a bit of a confidence issue with him at times but that made him all the more intriguing. Splinter--OT. I think 2k3 can be a bit too stern and comes across as unsupportive at times. Nick Splinter I just don't like his personality much at all. Movie Splinter us probably my second fav. I think OT Splinter is caring yet firm and while he doesn't get as involved, I always figured that meant he trusted his students could handle themselves. He still got involved when he had to. April--OT oddly enough. I don't dislike any of the Aprils but I think OT made for a good sisterly figure/mother figure without having to learn martial arts. Personally, I found her to not be Lois Lane type material but rather someone devoted to forging her own life and career and being stubborn about it. I don't really like how other versions become this overly competent fighter. I think learning some self defense is fine but not to the extent of skill they take it. Casey--1990 Movie. This is Casey Jones to me. Capable and funny but still able to form strong relationships. His friendship with the turtles and interest in April feels genuine. Shredder--2k3. While OT Shredder is funny, 2k3 is threatening and a good adversary. I think his backstory is intriguing and making him an Utrom I found to be a neat twist. Though, I did wonder how a robotic suit was that good a fighter... Baxter--About even between 2k3 and OT. 2k3 was intelligent and cunning, which makes for a great villain but there were still aspects of good, if small, in him. OT Baxter I just really feel for. Poor guy could not catch a break and when you see him in the first episodes, it is a reminder that he started out as just a poor inventor trying to get recognized. |

Let's see what I can come up with. I haven't read the IDW comics nor have I seen the 2k3 series or the recent film...
Leo: Nick Donnie: Archie and Nick Raph: A tie between Nick and OT. Mikey: A tie between OT and movie 1. Splinter: Archie, but I loathed his character design, and OT. I like him as the wise old sage type. April: Movie 1...OT April coming in second. Least favorite is 2k7 April. Casey: OT. Sorry, I just love the Clint Eastwood, mentally unstable, 'I want to smash things' OT Casey. He was hilarious. Seriously, though, I'd say movie 1 Casey, but OT Casey is tied with it. Shredder: Now this is tough for me...I honestly don't favor any version of this character I've come across. Baxter: OT. Didn't care for Mirage Baxter and just don't care much for Nick Baxter as he comes across as pathetic to me, unless he is indeed plotting behind Shredder's back. At least OT Baxter wanted revenge for what was done to him and tried his best to. I also felt bad for him. |

Splinter: Mirage April: IDW Casey: IDW Fugitoid: Mirage, tho IDW is doing a very good job with him as well. Shredder: Mirage Krang: Mirage but IDW as a villain; General Krang is very menacing. I've not yet had a chance to read any of Image or vol. 4., and its been too long since I've read the Archie books. |
Leonardo - Nick: It's a well-balance of seriousness and humor. 4Kids is a close second.
Raphael - 4 Kids: Although I love all versions of Raph, this one takes the cake. Mirage is second, and 2014 is a close third. Donatello - Tie between 2014 and 4kids. I actually really liked 2014 Donnie, despite him looking like a Ghostbuster. 4kids was also great. Michelangelo - IDW hands down. It's the best balance of Mikey's softer side, humorous side, wild side, and serious side in my opinion. Splinter - Nick. I just really like the brutality that this Splinter has, while being able to incorporate the wisdom. Casey - 1990 movie, but the 4kids is a close second. I can't take 2012 Casey seriously, which is a huge problem. Thing is, Casey in the 4kids series was fun, despite being not as brutal as he was before. April - 4kids. She had great chemistry with the Turtles/Casey. And I think we all know who the worst April is... *insert picture of Megan Fox here.* <-- funny thing is that Megan Fox's April is still more source-accurate than Nick's April. Shredder - 2012. I LOVE this Shredder. He can take all 4 Turtles and the Mutanimals on at the same time, and that kind of solidifies just how badass he is. Bebop and Rocksteady - IDW. I like this because they're actually a force to be reckoned with in the comics. Karai - Nick. I don't think I need to explain why. She's had plenty of development. |

Leonardo: 4Kids/2003 Series Very close calls with the Mirage and Nick versions, but ultimately I thought the 2003 Leo had the best overall character journey. He was likeable, but flawed, and felt like a real teenager pushing himself to be his best - perhaps too hard at times. He dealt with a lot of struggle and loss but never, ever gave up. He was going to pull through or go out fighting. That's my ideal Leonardo. And I still think Michael Sinterniklaas had the best vocal quality for the character. Donatello: IDW Comics I really enjoy the darker, philosophical places the Mirage version went, and I feel like the 4Kids version was the most immediately likeable. But IDW has moved ahead a bit lately - his struggles with wrapping his head around reincarnation and magic were a nice touch (kind of a similar feel to his personal struggle in SoTO, if kind of the exact opposite situation), and he's really come into his own lately, even before... certain events. He's got that mentally isolated thing going on while still being very likeable, which is a great take on him. Raphael: 1990 Movie Raphael's characterization has probably been the most consistent of the four, aside from the Fred Wolf cartoon, and it's heavily steeped in that Mirage original. But I think the 1990 movie did it best - he's angry, isolated, bitter and sardonic, and you totally understand why. They captured his emotions very well and made me like Raph a lot more than I usually do. And Josh Pais gets some bonus points for establishing the Brooklyn accent. Michelangelo: Mirage Comics Mikey's always been my favourite of the four (though Leo is slowly usurping him the older I get) but unfortunately he gets portrayed as pretty one-note a lot of the time, and his "key traits" -- Spicolli stonerish-ness in '87, zaniness in 2003, stupidity in 2012 -- gets really irritating the longer it goes on. The 1990 movie had a nice balance there, with the "party dude" demeanour and some subtle character moments revealing he was deeper than he seemed, and the IDW version is totally loveable. But the Mirage version is easily the strongest version to me. He's the most light-hearted and "human" of the brothers, has a strong creative side, and has the most emotional depth, though it's often fairly subtle. Splinter: 4Kids/Nick (tie) I feel like Splinter's backstory, the Yoshi/Saki rivarly and the cycle of vengeance spinning out of it, is absolutely key, and I feel like the Mirage comics still did that best. But the Mirage character has always been a bit too distant and single-minded for me. The 4Kids and Nick versions get the heart of the character and the depth of his loss -- though I do prefer him as Yoshi's rat instead of being Yoshi himself, they both do a great job with their versions of the character. But I like that he's trained the Turtles so they can protect themselves (and to pass on his/Yoshi's tradition) instead of training them as assassins for his own vengeance. It humanizes him a lot, and his protective disciplinarian routine really hits hard in those series where his personal pain is given so much attention. April: 1990 Movie I definitely prefer April as a lab assistant/scientist overall, but Judith Hoag rocked that role. Driven/stubborn, principled, ambitious, tough, smart, funny, caring and vulnerable, this April is easily the best version of the character ever. She feels like a full, real person with a strong personality, and she leaves a much larger impression than most other versions did. Casey: 1990 Movie Elias Koteas is Casey Jones as far as I'm concerned. He nailed the attitude and made a smarmy, violent, ignorant jackass so effortlessly, instantly likeable. That's a hell of a feat. Never get tired of rewatching his scenes in that movie. Shredder: IDW Comics IDW takes it by a hair. The vengeance/rivalry stuff is handled quite well here (though I'm not a huge fan of the reincarnation angle, they make it work surprisingly well), and he's got such an intimidating presence and the gravitas to back it up. Probably the best costume the character's ever had, too. More actual focus on how his crime organization operates is another huge plus. Mirage is a very close second, but oddly it's for the exact opposite reasons - the Shredder's defeat and absence, and the power vacuum he created, was the most interesting thing to happen in that series. Karai: Mirage Comics I think 4Kids, Nick and IDW have done some interesting things with their versions of the character, and I almost always find her pretty compelling. But the original Karai is a boss, not an underling. She's a grown woman running the show, not a teenage girl desperate for her father's approval. That's so much cooler, and the role she played in "City at War" was excellent and hasn't been topped yet, IMO. Baxter: IDW Comics 4Kids comes close, but the IDW Baxter is just such a perfectly cunning, devious ***hole! He feels like the version with the most potential and is probably the most entertaining so far. Bebop and Rocksteady: IDW Comics I love the original versions as bumbling comic relief (and briefly as legitimate threats in the first season), but the IDW version strikes such a brilliant balance between them as dumb-but-loveable screw-ups and absolutely ruthless monsters. Their microseries issue made me love them, and.... what they did... in issue 44 made me hate them. And yet I can't wait to see them show up again. Leatherhead: 4Kids/2003 Series More consistent than the Mirage version and more interesting than the Nick version. Really nails the character as a gentle, intelligent giant struggling with a feral nature he can't entirely control, and I loved it when he and Donnie got to be Science Bros. |
