Why do most people think Renet is a bimbo?

I just don't understand. I know she is more capable than that.

Discuss below.

Candy Kappa 06-15-2015 10:47 AM

Not seen her ever been referred to as a bimbo, unless maybe by Savanti Romero, but I can't remember that.

But, she is a blonde, and often acted a bit ditsy at times. So I guess that is enough for some?

CylonsKlingonsDaleksOhMy 06-15-2015 10:52 AM

Well, she is drawn blonde, klutzy, and busty in "Masks 1 and 2." But she is also depicted as quite capable in the end when she blasts Savanti Romero.

Honestly, I'm with Candy on this... has she ever been called a bimbo? I don't really see fans discussing her much, and I wasn't on the forums during the Turtles in Time mini-series when she was probably discussed.

Prowler 06-15-2015 11:14 AM

I don't recall everyone ever calling her one.

I can't speak for any other incarnations since I've only seen her on the 4kids series, but I recall her being somewhat clutzy and a bit of an immature teenager. Dunno if "bimbo" would be the right word to describe her.

Bimbo's never the right word to describe anyone.

Well, except the Kardashians. They've ruined Deep Space Nine for me because whenever I try to talk about how deceptive and brutal the Cardassians are, people totally misunderstand me. :tlol:

Panda_Kahn_fan 06-15-2015 11:39 AM

for me it was 4kids that did it'; "Like, totally!" Her idw self pulling the turtles along into life-threatening DANGER to save her boyfriend didn't help matters, ethier.

IndigoErth 06-15-2015 11:42 AM

Bimbo, no. Obnoxiously bubbly airhead, yes. At least based on the one version I'm familiar with. I hope Nick's version is decent.

Of course, if Nick Mikey is drawn to her... Just run now while there's still time to escape.

Mayhem 06-15-2015 11:56 AM

She's ditzy and a klutz, and quite evidently ADHD at times. But dumb? Nah, she's got brains and nous, she's just doesn't always show it heh.

You mean like THIS?

LOL, Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Prowler 06-15-2015 12:29 PM

Kardashians... now those are people I'll never understand why they're famous.

turtlefanforever 06-15-2015 12:37 PM

hmm

never seen anyone call her a 'bimbo' until you in this thread but i assume just because of the normal teenage antics.

She's not really a bimbo. She's just acts ditsy.

CyberCubed 06-15-2015 01:24 PM

Kevin Eastman created her, a guy known for making women just for sex appeal and humor. Renet is a blonde with huge boobs (especially in Mirage where her boobs are like half the size of her body), and she acts ditzy and clumsy.

She was created back in the 80's by Kevin Eastman. I'm sure he wasn't thinking of feminism or how people would react to her character 20 years later in the age of the tumblr internet crowd.

On some of the older threads, some people called her a "bimbo". I guess the threads aren't well-known though.

Then it's just a matter of opinion. I don't see her that way.

Kevin Eastman doesn't create over-sexualized women! :teek:

Never mind. :tlol:

It's such a paradox. Eastman's artwork is far more cheesecake than Laird's, but I think he's got the better handle on writing female characters.

Having said that, Renet gets the Bimbo Badge because she's blonde and built a certain way, and that's a really popular character type for all sorts of reasons.

Now that you've said that... hmmm.

April was fairly well written in TMNT Volume 1 Issue #12. And also in Shades of Gray / City at War. Who wrote those?

Comparing April Volume 4 to Angel Bodycount, though, I think they (Eastman and Laird) were both terrible at writing females.

Prowler 06-15-2015 01:50 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a bimbo a very dumb woman? aka a vapid automaton? Again, I'm only familiar with the 4Kids version of Renet, but I don't recall her being dumb. Just kinda clutzy and immature... is that really shocking for a teenage girl? I mean, the clutziness wasn't really needed, but calling her a "bimbo" seems like a really big stretch.

Where does the "dumb blonde" trope come from, anyway? Some Marilyn Monroe movies? And I don't think she was a natural blonde, was she?

John Pannozzi 06-15-2015 02:23 PM

In Eastman's TMNT Artobiography, he mentioned that he and Peter based Renet on a real girl who was a neighbor of their's and was somewhat absent-minded but smart.

That's cool!

BubblyShell22 06-15-2015 03:59 PM

Because she's blonde and has a Valley Girl accent. I think that would more than qualify her as a bimbo or a ditz at the very least. She was always getting into trouble and not knowing what she was doing all of the time, so it doesn't surprise me that people would think that.

Well, I always thought that Bruce Jenner looked a lot like Odo....so.
So far this is the only Renet/Bimbo post I can find....but to be fair, I ain't looking that hard, yet.

This is a "defence" of Renet:

No wonder Savanti wanted to sacrifice her. He even said himself in "Time Travails" that he didn't know how Lord Simultaneous puts up with her.

And here's one:

I don't wanna make any conclusions or be harsh...but she seems like a bimbo....(maybe I should look up more on her XD...I'm sure she's cool...)

But to be fair, there are only a few. I think Megan Fox has been called a bimbo more than Renet.

Ceres 06-19-2015 03:24 AM

I thought the term bimbo was meant for black women? I barely know this Renet but i guess she isn't black, is she? xD

Actually, no. It's a term usually reserved for the stereotypical "Valley Girl" type- Big-boobed, (usually) blonde, air-headed, and with tight outfits that accentuate their *ahem* best attributes.

OH then i am sorry i am not up to date with some slang-words used in america ^^ยด. Now i know, thanks for clarifying :D

HotJuicyBurgers 06-21-2015 11:14 AM

Renet is is airheaded, but I wouldn't consider her a bimbo. Either way, Kevin Eastman did create her back in the 80's so... not much else needs to be said lol

Cipher 06-21-2015 04:12 PM

Her first two appearances in Mirage absolutely played her up as air-headed and played on certain "ditzy blonde" tropes as part of the joke of her character (both she and Savanti were quite tongue-in-cheek). Later appearances treated them both quite a bit more seriously, which ... is generally true of most elements of the Mirage series, and the series itself as a whole.
