EGM Reviews TMNT for GBA
The verdict?
Greg - 7.0 Crispin - 3.5 Shane - 5.0 Good: Excellent Graphics Bad: Slash. Rinse. Repeat. I think they are going to give a review for the console versions next month. |
"slash. rinse. repeat."
*shrug* the beat-em-up games are a bit more than that. you have to learn when to hit the bosses so you don't get killed too fast. |
Here's each of the guy's thoughts I didn't have time to type:
Greg: Haters begone: TMNT on GBA offers a gnarly (read:good) throwback to the bygone days of brawl-em-up classics like Final Fight- or, even better, a throwback to Konami's old Turtles arcade games, albiet without 3D movement (each mean bro is limited to action on two 2D planes.) Since the turtles are all about kicking but anyway, why not give 'em a good, simple action game? Especially one that has super-fluid animation, colorful levels, and tight control. And actually, it's like four games in one- each of the four turtles has his own unique moves, story line, and levels to fight through. Plus, each each dude has his own minigame- Raph goes motorcycle racing against Casey Jones, Leo's got a mouser shooting gallery and so on. Ultimately, though, TMNT's very nature as an old-school brawler might turn off potential fans. Some finicky modern gamers (ahem...Crispin) won't dig taking on wave after wave of mousers and Foot ninjas. Personally, I'll be taking on ol' Shred-head every time I take my GBA on a trip. Bodacious! 7.0/10 Crispin: As if the Turtles license here wasn't enough to suck you into a time warp, wait until you play this game. This side-scrolling, button smacking 2D brawler looks and plays like a Super NES title Konami has been sitting on since 1992. Levels work thusly: You traipse through sewer/labratories/alleys and whomp ninjas/robots/punks with your katana/nunchaku/staff. Clear an area and you move on to the next- unless you fall asleep first. Vehicle levels break up the monotony but aren't exciting either. Surely GBA can do more than this? 3.5/10 Shane: Let me be the voice or reason- Greg and Crispin are both overreacting here. TMNT is neither a rebirth of brawling brilliance nor the pinnacle of boring game design. In fact, it's a perfectly average beat-em-up that will likely keep fans of the cartoon enthralled. Smooth graphics and precise control make it easy on the eyes and thumbs, and the driving bits offset face-smashing monotory. Your mutagenic enjoyment won't go beyond a mild simmer, but I promise totally OK action throughout. 5.0/10 Ouch, there's a review for He-Man on GBA...well, it aint pretty. |
Eh, they didnt like the new Evil Dead game either and that was a good game.
I love EGM but they're a bit too finicky a lotta times. |

Just because GBAs always get low scores doesn't mean they are bad. I hate to listen to Small minded Critics with no taste.
|
But what if they are right and this game really isnt that good? Just cause its tmnt doesnt mean it will be good...it could be a horrible game. I love beat em ups so it probobly will be a great game. I hope they like the console games though.
|
I MISS EGM!
WE DON'T GET IT IN MY AREA ANYMORE!!   Anyway, good balance! One liked it. One Hated it. one thought it was alright. |
It sounds about right though, honestly... it all depends on preference. EGM reviewers are more "sophisticated" (yeah sure) so they wouldn't enjoy a simple beat-em-up game like TMNT while a lot of other people would like it fine.
Consider the fact that a lot of people don't play a ton of games, and are only gonna get the TMNT games because they're TMNT. Are any of the TMNT games for any system gonna be a Zelda or MGS-style "classic" game? Honestly, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell. But will they be good, fun, simple distractions for a few hours? Almost guaranteed. And that's fine. If I want Zelda, I'll play Zelda. It won't hurt my enjoyment of the TMNT game any. I'm not looking forward to TMNT thinking it'll change the world of gaming... I'm just expecting it to entertain me, and I'm sure it will. |

Besides, it's doing one thing. It's bringing back beat-em-ups! :D |
I hope IGN has a review up soon.
|
Gamespot will probably give decent rating to all the versions, they tend to be more nastolgic over there.
|
I find myself agreeing with EGM more than anyother game magazine... IGN I tend to think of as complete and utter morons, of course everyone is subject to their own opionion, void where prohibited, offer only valid untill 6/6/666
|
... You don't really find a gaming site wich has more professional reviewers than IGN. If they give low scores, there will be a long explanation for it. If you disagree with them, it certainly doesn't mean they are morons.
|
like I said, that was my own opinion, feel free to disagree. I won't argue it.
|
Tryin' to pick a fight, Karpo?
|
Nope, but if I said that people in WWF are morons, Im pretty sure I would get few comments, even if it is my opinion.
|
Different Entirely, mine is based on reasons, Ive read their reviews, and previews and I have reasons I don't like them.
You on the other hand would just make a comment like that out of spite. You seriously need to drop whatever it is you have against me, everytime I have an opinion you disagree with, you pull this crap. |
What? I have never "pulled any crap" on you. You just dissed something I hold great respect to, and I will defend it.
About WWF, It is my opion that it is pointless fake fighting and that it's poor entertainment. But because many people do like and respect it, I avoid dissing it. |
You've called me a liar, Called me computer illiterate(but you probably spelled right) and several other encounters like this. Other people have asked what you have against me before, and to be honest I dont know, I dont care. I just asume our personalities aren't meant to get along or something.
But now we've gotten wayyy to off topic |
Then it is off topic, but I DO NOT recall anytime I would have called you ANYTHING. You are way off track, and if so many people are too, I'll say it here: I have never had any grudge against You, and probably never will.
|
Well people do remember things youve said to me, but I am willing to "let it slide" (so to speak) Under a table or something, and ignore it.
*hugs* I LOVE YA BIG GUY! |
Well If I have said something, even if I don't recall it, I'm sorry.
*shakes hands* |
See, me and you should be a perfect example for some people around here, we had a misunderstanding, and handled it like grown ups.
*shakes the hand* |
Good Show! **claps**
I knew you could solve this peacefully! :D |
Thats the only right way to do it.
|
I'm not gonna comment... NOT gonna comment... there's been far too much said about insulting other people's likes and dislikes around here already... and that was just a cheap shot... frankly, I expect more from someone I respect as much as Karpo, but at least both of you settled down before I had to get my learnin' stick and smack the both of you with it.
Getting back on topic, I can't say one way or another about IGN's quality... I check it, take it in, and then dismiss it, since I make it a point to never, EVER put too much stock in ANY reviewer's words. Especially not on the internet, since everyone on the internet suddenly comes down with an extreme case of know-it-all-ism whenever they're asked for their opinion. But I do read EGM too, and find myself agreeing and disagreeing just as much as with any other reviewers. My opinion? Who gives the review doesn't matter, but if you put too much stock in what some person sitting at a keyboard telling people what to think says, and you let it hinder your enjoyment of a product, well, that's your prerogative. It makes you a sheep, but it's your prerogative. |
Review of a product is just one persons opinion about it, it isn't ment to offend anyone, just to give some information about the product, an how it in the reviewer's mind compares to other products currently on market. You should not make a decision to buy something by just one review, diffrent people's view can vary greatly. But like I said, there's no reason to get offended no matter how much your opinion differs from the reviewer's.
|
I just thought it wasn't necessary for you to respond to GK's opinion about IGN as if he'd attacked your children or something, and for you to resort to attacking something he likes in defense. That aint like you, br'a.
But I'm willing to believe you just didn't get your milk n cookies yesterday and that you were a bit cranky and didn't mean anything personal by it. Since you're usually such a swell fella and all. |
Yeah, I went a little too far. I know.
|
IGN to me is a kind of off and on type of site. Sometimes they just get way out of hand, there is NO way in you know where that Raw or DOXBV deserve anything higher than a 5. But sometimes they can hit smack on. I just think at times they're way too biased. Mostly on the X-Box side of things. I am a firm believer of just buying what I think looks good. IGN gave Metroid Prime up in the high 9's but I thought the game was (besides the graphics) utter crap. No offense to K47 since I know he loves Metroid. :P My guess is the EGM review is pretty much honest. There really won't be anything special about the game. It WILL be a rinse and repeat game. I'm guessing the same about the console version. I'm sure it won't be getting anything over a 7.5 from anywhere. Basically because in the day and age of "innovative gaming" simple games just don't cut it to those so called "guru's" of the gaming community. Games that don't create anything new just don't impress them anymore. Unless it's GTA: Vice City, which somehow with the exact same gameplay that's over 2 (I think) years old, is still called innovative. I just don't understand the way these guys think sometimes.
|
IGN being biassed was a really funny comment. Every section of the site has diffrent editor, and diffrent reviewers[there have been some exceptions tough]. Of course when there are comparions of diffrent versions of the game, X-box usually wins since it does provide the best graphics and game performance.
I belive the new TMNT game will score something between 7 or 8, but of course TMNT fans can add that +1 to the final score. |

Yeah, down with the World Wide Fund for nature! (Or World Wildlife Fund, depending on where you live)

*ahem* Now back on topic. I really don't trust anything that EGM says anymore (not since they trashed F-Zero GX). They can't even enjoy a fun beat em up game like TMNT? They aren't softicated, they're stuck up. :D I'll wait for IGN's review. They usually seem to be a little more fair on their reviews, but that's just my opinion. |
Karpo I didn't word it right. I didn't mean bias against other systems. What I meant to say was that they over hype/over score most X-Box games. Brute Force was supposed to be the next Halo. They praised the crap out of it. Then it comes out and they say it's an ok game? I don't get it. I do think IGN is the best of the videogame sites though.
|
Oh thats what you ment... Well that might be, since I don't own Xbox I hardly read Xbox reviews.
|
Yeah. They review X-Box games really badly at times. I find that actually holds true to most X-Box reviewers. At least ones that review X-Box alone anyways. The X-Box magazine is the biggest piece of garbage to come out in a long time. The bias is just terrible. At least the other officals mags tell the truth most of the time, but when you say X-Box is beating out the other two consoles in sales...well...your views and opinions just kinda go down the toilet. The only reason to buy it is for the demo discs. BTW is there any known reason why Nintendo Power doesn't offer demo discs with their mag? It's the only reason I don't buy Nintendo power anymore.
|
Have there been any demo discs for Gamecube? I haven't heard of any.
