If the OT had a Mutanimals team
Archie, IDW and Nick all have Mutanimals teams where all the different good guy mutants team up.
The original cartoon never had a team of Mutanimals, but if they did, who would they be? A character has to have debuted in the OT to be used. I think they would have done: - Napoleon Bonafrog - Mondo Gecko - Merdude - Mona Lisa - Muckman or Mutagen Man Leatherhead was a villain in the OT so he's out, and Wingnut/Screwloose were invaders from space and only in 1 episode. |
Actually there were plans for a Mutanimals cartoon with the same seven members from the Archie comics. Not sure how they would've changed Leatherhead into a good guy, though it would've been interesting to watch.

They would most likely have made it the same team as the Archie one to be honest, probably with some contrived reason to make Leatherhead a hero.

Has a host of behind the scenes stuff for your viewing pleasure. |
Alas, we'll never know what might've been. I can't help but wonder what the theme song would've been like.
|
There's already a thread about the never produced Mutanimals cartoon though, this is a thread about making a Mutanimals team from what we got on the OT.
My team would include: - Napoleon Bonafrog (frequent TMNT ally) - Mondo Gecko (popular toy) - Mona Lisa (female and fan favorite) -Usagi Yojimbo (since the space usagi pilot failed) - Ace Duck (iconic, already had character sheets for him and "surprise" appearance from classic toy) |
Now I wonder how 2k3 Mutanimals would have worked...

It could've worked.
- Leatherhead - Quarry - Dark Leo - Usagi -random triceraton |
Quarry was sorta healed, I don't think Dark Leo wouldn't wanna break away from his brothers, & 2 of those aren't even mutants.

There were missed opportunities with HAVOC. And yes, I know you said good guys, but what about it being an organization with different factions? That would have been interesting. On one hand you'd have mutants wanting to protect themselves from the human society and from the law, and on the other hand you'd have guys like Titanus who wanted to create some sort of mutant order.
HAVOC only used mutants we had never seen before. It's implied they might have been created by Titanus. Would have been cool to see Mondo Gecko and Mona Lisa back. |

Leatherhead has always been a good guy in the comics, its just the Fred Wolf series got him completely wrong.

The big deal is it'd be like having a group called The Butchers but half of them are vegetarian animal rights activitists. :tlol:
No harm in a rag-tag group of creatures, but that namesake would be ill-fit to one that isn't entirely comprised of mutants. |

An OT Mutanimals team definitely would have to have Usagi and some (or all) of the Punk Frogs. Even though a lot of people didn't care for Usagi, I thought he was awesome.
Also, even though he didn't interact with the turtles and only appeared in 1 episode, I think Ace Duck would be a cool member for the team. He's the kind of character who would've fit right in with the show Tailspin. |

Ace Duck was portrayed in Archie as having too big of an ego to be part of any team.

I'm not bent out of shape, I used the word hell in my phrasing, which is something adults sometimes do. :tlol:

Usagi comics have been running for 30 years, they started in 1984 at the same time Mirage did. Usagi's fanbase is huge and completely different than TMNT's fandom. |
I cannot believe how many people are throwing out the most ignorant choices ever.
Mutanimals... TEAM OF MUTANTS. No Braunze, no Usagi, no Triceraton. I feel like if the question was "Who should be the fifth Turtle?", some of you guys would be answering "Zog! Leatherhead! Mona Lisa!" |
Eh, plenty of the Archie Mutanimals were either aliens or mystically gifted animal men. About half of them actually.

The Mutanimals weren't created to be thematically consistent, they were an afterthought. A failed attempt at creating a spin-off toyline, hence the stupid name. |
Archie Mutanimals are still the best concept. Yes, bad name since all aren't mutant animals. But still great!
|
And the two Mutanimals teams since then?
100% mutant Nick, 100% mutant IDW (save Lindsey, token human). |
It makes me wonder. Are these different variations we have of the Mutanimals now going to end with the same fate as the originals? I hope not.
|
Going back to the original question about a group of Mutanimals for the 1987 cartoon, obviously it would have been a separate continuity had the Mutanimals show aired so it would still be possible. However, could someone list all of the good mutants that appeared in the cartoon?
|
According to Ryan Brown's notes it would have been the same continuity, even transplanting (hur hur hur) Krang in as a major villain.

The point is the original Mutanimals team wasn't formed by only mutant characters in fact the majority weren't even mutants so there is nothing "ignorant" about choosing non-mutants in other shows, especially 2k3 which for the most part lacked mutants like other shows which on the contrary more mutants than we'd ever want like Nick.
