TMNT #56 Preview and Discussion
|
I just finished looking through it.
From the Rat King's five second visit with Kitsune, we might have an idea of what's next next storyline. Maybe the "Rats. Rats everywhere" piece of TMNT lore. |
We've been waiting so long for Leatherhead to debut, over 56 issues! Especially with the teases of him in Turtles in Time #3, and in #49-50.
Its about time. |

Sounds like Splinter knows something is up regarding someone's mortal remains!
RAT KING!!!! |

Who knows, maybe Rat King just thinks Shredder's bones would be nice to chew on?
|
It would depend on if the Rat King is involved with Shredder at all. Bringing him back might be Kitsune's ambition (how that involves Alopex is to be determined), and Splinter is suspicious. Hence finding a guard for his tomb.
|
Am I the only one who thinks too many things are going on at once? You have the whole Kitsune/Rat King and Pantheon story going with them controlling Alopex, you have this current arc with Leatherhead and the Utroms, you have Bishop and Darkwater monitoring Burnow Island, you have the Street Phantoms and Darius Dunn as well as the professor and his partner's connection to them, plus now Splinter and the blonde Foot Soldier.
And this is on top of the other stuff on the side like the Mutanimals and Hob, whereever Karai went, and Null, etc. It almost seems like too much is going on and there's not enough screentime or breathing room for everything. |

Still kinda makes my skin crawl to see Rat King. While Saki might be gone it's heavily implied his spirit will be reborn someday, wonder when that will pop up?
|
One of the best things about this series is how many stories they can have going at one time without sacrificing quality.

So now post-#50 some of what's going is slow-burn stuff, like the Pantheon storyline, which will presumably be this volume's long-term megastory; some of it is continuing fallout from what's come (the Leatherhead arc will presumably deal with fallout from Attack on Technodrome); the other random new bits will probably come together in a big story soon, especially if Null is Harold's ex-partner and supplied the Phantoms' cloaking tech, which feels like where they're going with this. And to be honest, I feel like the book's finally at a point where they can **** around a little, tell some fun two- or three-part stories and have some of those random, weird adventures the turtles are known for. The recent Mikey and the Mutanimals two-parter was a good example of what this book can do now that the status quo is where it is at the moment. It doesn't have to be plot twists and melodrama all the time, fun as that's been the past year. |
Just finished it. Good stuff and that Mateus cover is sublime. I've enjoyed the stand in artists but this really is a book at its best when he and Ronda are delivering. Brilliant stuff, we get an origin story too

Well...I'm full of sugar from a milkshake coming back to Waco from Ft. Worth. I'll probably see if it's up at midnight and read it immediately.

Yep! And my dad does the trip every weekend. He teaches in Waco (and I am a student at the same school), but he goes up to my mom on the weekend. I had to be there today for a memorial service, though.
It can be an hour and a half drive if traffic is really good, but 2 or longer if it's bad. What's more is that it's on I-35, which is still a nightmare. I also checked to see what time they release, and it's about 10 am every day for new releases. So still more waiting. |
Spoiler:
Is it weird that I was expecting that? |
Well, a couple of unexpected things:
Spoiler:
So... curious to see where this goes. I mean, we know who really killed the Utroms... but is Leatherhead being 100% truthful? And where will he end up in New York City? |

Also, I'd rather have Glurin and Xeinos namedropped than who we saw, but I'm still excited. Just please, leave room for Glurin and Xeinos in the surviving Utroms' ranks! |

One of the Utroms has a distinctive look, like an elderly scholar of sorts, or at least what would pass as one in Utrominon. He even appears on the cover of #57. I imagine he'll be important, going forward.

Really amazing issue, my only complaint yet again is the art style...... The turtles look like 12 year old adolescents and very feminine, not 16 or 17 year old teenagers...... Hopefully the art reverts back to the earlier stylings.
Also.... Tom this might be a question you could shed some light on? Spoiler:

Anyway, I read the issue again and I'm still just as unsure. Leatherhead is definitely not telling the whole truth and is holding some cards close to his chest, still... But honestly, it could be him or the other suspects. It could go either way... |
Since the island is now terrafromed it could be affecting Traag's/Granitors brains making them crazy or whatever, hence the "Koff."
Then again they lived in the Utrom homeworld with Krang didn't they? |

Now, Triceratons, at least... we've seen those on the Utrom homeworld. |
I thought this was a really solid issue. Thanks to the whole team.
