What if the multi-colored Foot Soldiers from the games appeared in the OT?

As a kid I've always kind of wanted to see the multi-colored Foot Soldiers from the classic Konami games in the original cartoon, even if it was for only 1 episode or something. I always loved the white and blue colored ones especially.

Anyone else want to see this as a kid?

Yeah, I was right there with ya. Those yellow Foot with their spiked green ultimate frisbees... hated those punks. :tlol:

As a kid, I played the Arcade game a lot and was into the original cartoon so yeah that does sound pretty cool!

snake 05-24-2016 08:06 PM

I love them. I'm totally going to pick up the NECA ones when they come out

Shark_Blade 05-24-2016 08:12 PM

You mean they were not multicolored before? Strange I thought they were cause it'd be boring with just one shade of color.

ProactiveMan 05-25-2016 03:10 AM

Yes, I would have liked to have seen that. Just imagine the paint mistakes though Hehehe, they had enough trouble with the Turtles.

I'm really bummed that I probably won't get my hands on the NECA figures, because I've always found the rainbow Foot Soldiers appealing. I like their crazy weapons too.

FredWolfLeonardo 05-25-2016 07:23 AM

Now that I think of it, why did they not do this? It would've been a really nice addition. Even the rock soldiers had more variety with the two existing colours being brown and grey. They could've been more creative with the foot ninjas, but oh well..

neatoman 05-25-2016 08:42 AM

I wouldn't really see the point in different colored Foot Bots. In the games it's because they attack differently depending on color, thus you know how to deal with them before they attack. There's no reason for that in cartoon as you're just passively observing, that and it would have been a pain for the animators to remember different colors, they clearly had enough trouble with that on the Turtles themselves.

I guess it could have been a neat detail but it wouldn't have worked out for the production.

Colours

No point of Shredder using different colours for different weapons and let the turtles know that even before weapons had been pulled out.

It's video games, that sort of stuff has to happen or else the player gets frustrated.

DarkFell 05-25-2016 09:17 AM

I think the OT made a good call in keeping the colors of the Foot Soldiers simple. We got to enjoy busting them up in the video games and didn't have to deal with the Skittle colored Foot robots hurting our eyes in the cartoon.

Also, certain colors might not always look good on the animation cels.

EDIT - My phone isn't always the best thing to use to access this forum.

all of this.

I mean we would have gotten to see more colourful foot soldiers on screen but I doubt that the green, yellow, blue or orange foot soldier would be doing anything more than the purple foot soldier which means they too would have been aimlessly firing a laser gun until they got smashed to pieces by the turtles. There would have been no point to it.

The multi-colored Foot Soldiers provide great visual alternation and I would have liked to see those in the OT, but even more in the vintage toy line. Fortunately it's not a big deal to make custom colored Foot Soldiers !

ABrown 05-25-2016 12:39 PM

I think they definitely could've made the multi-colored Foot soldiers work in the original cartoon. That was the fun game. BA, BA, up down, BA, left right, BA, start.

Andrew NDB 05-25-2016 12:43 PM

Absolutely no point in different colored Foot Soldiers... so yeah, of course they should have been in the OT.

I mean in the cartoons and comics. Of course it's OK in the videogames.

Your'e going to SDCC?

I think the OT barely even used the foot soldiers were had. You can count their appearances. Most of the time it was R&B by themselves out if we were lucky they had two foot soldiers with them. What makes it annoying is they made the foot into robots when though they have human hands. Now if they went to the trouble of making them robots they should've used them more as fodder for the turtles to attack with their weapons without it being violent since they are robots. And why are there hands not another color like the toy. It looks stupid to see a human that is a robot. Either make him a robot or a human. And of thru weren't even allowed to attack the robot foot soldiers them they should've kept them human.

But anywho of they had used footsoldiers better then yeah a ranking system would've been great.

That would've been awesome. :D & I like that some of them are finally being made in toy. :)

Speedy Cerviche 05-25-2016 04:15 PM

Man that would have been great. It's a shame how little the foot soldiers were used in the series. I find it funny in these IDW comic reprints of Mirage material they can't seem to decide what color they want the foot soldiers so every trade has them colored differently. I just pretend that they're like the video game foot soldiers in all their multi colored glory lol.

Little? It's just during season 2 up to the final exisode Shredder has no access to them (but one appears in "Teenagers from Dimension X").

FredWolfLeonardo 05-25-2016 06:39 PM

Unrelated but in the OT, the last appearance of the foot soldiers as a group were in the season 7 finale, Shredder Triumphant while a lone individual appearee alongside krang in the season 10 episode "a turtle in time". They have appeared in every season of the OT, except for seasons 8 and 9.

The foot soldiers, while having the same colour scheme as earlier seasons, had a noticeably lighter shade of purple and black on their clothes. Also, the lone foot soldier in season 10 showed signs of being aware and having emotion if you closely observe its facial patterns after the past turtles are suddenly transported to the present out of nowhere.

Archieverse

And they were grey and purple in the Archieverse

Krutch 05-26-2016 07:57 AM

I would have dug that, yeah :D

Worth pointing out in the Mega Drive/Genesis game The Hyperstone Heist the original purple foot soldiers are not the default soldiers and only appear further into the game. Strange actually considering how they're presented in the other games.

Weaponry

I also never recall the Foot soldier robots carry any boomerangs in the cartoons and comics (maybe axes) and definately not bows and arrows.

The reason for this is based on the color palettes usage of Hyperstone Heist. The first palette of 16 colors is a few reds, a few black/grey/white, some yellow, and a couple colors for the player 1 turtle. The reds are used by common things such as explosions, pizzas, oil barrels. The black/grey/white/yello and turtle specific colors are used by the player 1 turtle. The foot soldier sprite data is split up into weaponless common data and sprite data for specific weapons. So if foot soldier sprites are loaded, and having these fixed red colors it made it easier to make the weaponless foot soldier red.

Further information: the second palette is similar but the first few colors can be changed for another foot soldier color and the last few colors are for the second player turtle. The third palette is typically used for enemies and the fourth palette is used for background colors.

This means that there could have been three different foot soldier colors at one time in hyperstone heist but was never utilized from what I can tell. I did do it in my turtles in time hyperstone heist hack (only first level completed).

Even with this design they could have made the weaponless foot soldier purple but I think they choose this scheme for simplicity.

SurrealBrain 08-25-2016 04:04 PM

I wouldn't have minded, to be sure, but to be quite frank, I don't know what it'd have added. But I wouldn't have complained.

So what you mean is that it would have taken up more cartridge space?

bgvanbur 09-06-2016 11:03 AM

It wouldn't have taken up more cartridge space, it was just convenience. And that stems from how the Sega Genesis does colors using palettes. Technically, the only thing affected by using purple weaponless foot soldiers would be supporting 3 different foot soldiers at once. This isn't an issue since Hyperstone Heist never seemed to have 3 unique foot soldiers on the screen at once anyways. With red weaponless foot soldiers, you would have to have a red foot soldier, one would have to be a shuriken, nunchuck, or flame and the other would be a katana or armguard. By forcing the weaponless foot soldier to be purple, you would be required to have a purple and a red, and the third foot soldier couldn't overlap the red foot soldier weapons.

When making my big apple hack of hyperstone heist I debated changing the foot soldier colors to the turtles in time colors, but I kind of felt like it left part of the hyperstone heist uniqueness to the level. (http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3011/).

Right I see.
