What do children of today know about TMNT history?

What do children of today know about TMNT in general? And what do they think about older version. Of course I don't count the 2012 Nickelodeon cartoon, IDW comics and 2014 respective 2016 films since that's what's in right now. Are they aware how long it has existed (circa), or maybe many became aware of the 1987-1996 MWS cartoon with the Transdimensional Turtles episode?

If you have children who're into TMNT, you probably know. If so, please tell more!

Unworthy tinker 06-08-2016 12:26 PM

My little sister is seven, and she knows about most stuff. Then again, she got me into TMNT, I discovered everything, then explained it to her. Even before that though, she was aware of the OT, Mirage, 2003 cartoon, The next mutation, etc.

The current thing I don't see many kids knowing about though is the IDW comics.

Idw

So children of today know about the Archie comics but not the IDW? Strange.

CyberCubed 06-08-2016 12:47 PM

Tell them to come here and I will educate them on TMNT history. Its my job.

TurtleTitan97 06-08-2016 12:52 PM

Educate them on what, how to hate nostrils? Or make perverted comments constantly? Or just how to come across like someone who's completely ignorant?

If anything, given your post history, you shouldn't even be allowed to talk to children.

Agreed, you'd figure IDW's comics would have an easier time reaching the hands of children.

The only time I saw the IDW comics in Sweden was inside some second hand comic shop in Stockholm. Otherwise I sometimes see some comics who seem to be based on the Nickelodeon cartoon.

Unworthy tinker 06-08-2016 03:46 PM

I think it's just harder for kids to get their hands on comics in general nowadays. While I definitely know I can't speak for everyone, it's understandable where I live. They used to sell comics at a local TRU, but it was all DC (stuff like Teen titans go) and Barbie magazines anyway. The closest comic book shop is still like, thirty minutes away, and when we do go, my siblings and I are usually the only people under eighteen in there.

Obviously there are people who live closer, and again, I'm not trying to speak for everyone, but eh. Yeah, that comic shop has a pretty cool TMNT display actually, but that's it. The only other shop in the city just barely opened and didn't have much TMNT stuff.

*shrugs* just my two cents anyways. There's still probably plenty of kids buying comics, it just seems kind of a rare thing to see over here.

Noone even said that...

If I'm counted as a child then, very much

Comic books are way more obscure than cartoons/movies. Most people don't read comics.

I haven't picked up a single DC or Marvel comic since I was a kid, yet I'm a big fan of Marvel/DC superheroes.

Etsyturtle2 06-08-2016 04:57 PM

They know nothing and are idiots.

MsMarvelDuckie 06-08-2016 05:01 PM

Says the guy who only knows them from movies and tv shows. Trust me when I say this Cubed but what you know about those heroes could fit into a thimble compared to those who read the comics.

MrPliggins 06-08-2016 05:30 PM

When I was 12 or so (1991-ish) I learned about the history of Spider-man through the book "Spider-man Saga". If I was 12 today, I'd probably be interested to read the TMNT Ultimate Visual History to catch up. But there's not really a similar book to Spider-man Saga which recounts the stories of the comics. I'd say the comic continuity is more loose than Spider-man anyway, at least compared to 1960s-1990s Spidey.

Then you'd question them about Cartoon Network and shows that have same sex relationships.

Utrommaniac 06-08-2016 05:58 PM

Depending on how old they are, most kids probably wouldn't be able to get an IDW comic anyway. Comixology has their age listing as "12+ only" for good reason. Granted, if I had a child who was 8-10, I'd let them read it, but not younger.

sdp 06-08-2016 06:06 PM

It's more likely that kids today are educated about TMNT than when we were kids in the 90s without internet. All it takes is to search TMNT on google and one of the highest results is the wikipedia entry with all the history which we could only ever dream of reading as kids.

You completely missed his point. He's saying comics are less accessible & that casuals don't bother seeking them out because they feel they can be sufficiently involved in a series or fandom with just the acted entertainment. Then he says he himself is an example of that outside of the TMNT brand.

CyberCubed 06-08-2016 07:50 PM

I'm honestly surprised people don't know that comic books are essentially "niche." You think all the people who go see the Marvel movies and X-men movies in theaters are comic book fans? Of course not, only the hardcore fans are.

I follow TMNT comics because I'm a hardcore fan, but if I were a casual TMNT fan I most likely wouldn't.

I taught my little bro about most tmnt stuff. He was introduced with the 2012 show, then the toys, and then he was Secret Of The Ooze, Turtles 3, and Tmnt 2007. He's watched Next Mutation and while he hasn't completed everything he's very aware of it all.

But no comics or other cartoons than 2012 yet?

ABrown 06-10-2016 11:20 AM

My step son is 15 now. When the 4Kids series was airing, he was 2-8 years old. I made sure to expose him to the show. Of course he loved it, and still enjoyed watching it when Nick Toons was re-airing the show. I also showed him some of the original series as well. He enjoyed that too. He's seen some of the Nickelodeon series, but hasn't really gotten all that into it. Which isn't really a huge surprise since I too don't find it to be that good of a show. Also like me, he loved the CGI TMNT movie.

I've tried to expose my three year old twin boys to TMNT, but they don't seem interested yet. They do recognize them now. They had an inflatable little TMNT playpen thing that they absolutely loved. It's a shame that those things get holes in them so easily. They've also got some TMNT play dough that they love playing with.

Ages

I see no point of getting into TMNT at the ages of 2-3.

I was 3 years old when I saw the original cartoon for the first time, and watched it from there. You'd be surprised how many 3-4 year old kids take to something.

Powder 06-11-2016 03:21 AM

Yeah, I took interest as a diaper dweller myself, took my first steps to approach the TV while the first movie played on VHS.

So the first film got you into TMNT?

It was the first time I noticed them, according to my family. Then I went nuts from my crib when I saw my half-brother's Michelangelo figure, which they gave to me. I guess it's from there that they would turn on the show for me. :trazz: But yeah I have pictures of me as a toddler wearing TMNT sneakers & stuff. :tlol: I should upload one.

When people become parents, it is their job to teach their kids about things they liked and get them into franchises.

Plenty of parents get their kids into DC, Marvel, TMNT, Star Wars, Star Trek, Pokemon, anime, etc....because its what they liked as kids. We want our kids to like the same thing we liked, so we get them into the same franchises.

We must past on our interests to the next generation. That's how franchises continue throughout the decades.

Why not just let them get into what they want? I always cringe whenever I see those posts online like "YOUR LITTLE GIRL LIKES PRINCESSES WELL F*CK YOU MINE LIKES STAR WARS AND AVENGERS TOTALLY NOT BECAUSE I MADE HER WATCH THEM TRUST ME"

ProactiveMan 06-13-2016 04:09 AM

Yeah, thank christ my parents didn't do that or I'd be posting on a Bonanza forum right now.

I gave my niece a Michelangelo Pillow Pet when she was a baby – maybe when she’s old enough to know about things, she’ll find it in her toybox and wonder what it is. So far though, she much prefers Thomas the Tank Engine.

No, parents don't have to forcely teach them about that. :trolleye:

There are other more important life lessons to be taught other than TMNT, no need shove it down their throat. Let them like things on their own term.

If that had been going on since Ancient times we would have major franchises based on those Greek Iliads and Odysseys stories right now.

My niece and nephew love watching television with me and while I show them some TMNT stuff (both present day and the previous cartoons) we share a lot of interests in current shows on both Nickelodeon and Disney. When they get a little older I'll start showing them more grown up stuff from the 80s like Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Weekend at Bernie's.

Have they seen your old TMNT toys?

OMG, yes! My nephew loves to play with the 2003 Shell Cycle and the Nightwatcher Cycle from 2007! I'll put certain figures from those toylines on them and we'll just have a ball.

Do you have any idea if you know in which order the various cartoons, comics and films were produced?

MikeyMike 06-24-2016 06:03 PM

Although I don't know any kids who like TMNT, when I was little, I have a slight memory of watching the 2003 cartoon on Thanksgiving, and my parents made me turn it off. Of course, I got upset! I didn't know there were any older cartoons or even comics!

Did they think it was too violent?
