Watching the OT in X-Files "Mythology" style
So recently I have been marathon watching all of the X-Files from start to end, and when I was looking up the best ways to watch the series (DVD, iTunes, etc), I found that you could buy the series in several different formats. One was purely the "mythology" arc, which Fox seems to endorse since they even released a DVD set that was the mythology episodes only.
That got me thinking about the TMNT and how I would go about watching it if I wanted to cut all the non-essential stuff, and really try to follow the over all "mythology". Yeah, I know, with OT that is a slight stretch, but there are threads there that certainly are worthy, such as the multiple returns of Baxter and his degeneration into a mindless fly; the Technodrome on its seemingly never ending journey to its ultimate doom in Dimension X; and most of seasons 8, 9, and 10 have an overall arc to them. Basically, I wanted to cut things like "Polly Wanna Pizza", (I mean, really, anyone?...), and keep everything like season 1, The Big Blow Out trilogy, anything involving recurring characters such as Slash, Rat King, etc. So I came up with the following list. I wondered if anyone else had any other input. Any other worthy episodes for the list? This isn't intended as a bashing post, but purely how I described it - cutting the "villain/monster of the week" stuff and keeping what is important. I actually ended up keeping well over half, only ditching 87 out of 193 in the end, which surprised me since I didn't realise there would be so much I felt was that important (admittedly I did keep some episodes that I felt were "classics," too, even if they didn't add too much over all). My list: Spoiler:

Yeah, I can see this. But even then the OT has a lot of great episodes with only one-shot characters, or character-centric ones about the turtles themselves like, "What's Michaelangelo good for?" or "Raphael Vs. the Volcano."
In a show like the original toon a "filler list" doesn't really matter. |
My only essential list is just Season 1. :P
|
Just skimmed your list, one glaring omission I noticed was "Beneath These Streets". Can't start season 3 without it.

I was suggesting adding and episode, not removing. |

Oh, Jesus. Long day at work... pardon my poop brain.

I would omit Mobster From Dimension X as it adds nothing to the series and is rather dull and unconnected at the end of the series.
I would add 'Beneath These Streets' episode 19 just as ToTheNines suggested as well as the episode that followed it 'Turtles On Trial' episode 20. The Turtles basically reveal themselves to the public in that one. |

Yeah I never like these lists, just because nothing that moves the plot forward doesn't mean it's not good and many are much better than the actual episodes that move the plot forward. The term filler is misused nowadays when in the past it only referred to those terrible episodes of anime that had no value.
|
That's actually not a terrible list if you want to revisit the old series in a fondly nostalgic way, or just get a general feel for how it worked.
By cutting "Leonardo Lightens Up," you're cutting the single most amazing episode the show though. In fact, I'd say it's the only must-see entry. |
Probably have to include "The Catwoman from Channel Six" since it is Irma's introduction to the Turtles.
|
That's a cool list and totally fits. Personally I'd just end it at season 8.

New list as per suggestions below. New list totals 109 out of 193 episodes, therefore omitting 84.

No, "Shredder's Mom" episode? I'd say his mother is an important part of knowing why OT Shredder is the way he is. He was a son whose mother never appreciated him enough. :D
|
I was going to suggest that one myself. How could you NOT have his mother in there?! I'd also suggest The Ninja Sword of Nowhere for the epic battle in Limbo and the nice bit of lore it included, and Splinter No More for his brief return to being human as an important plot. And as much as some fans hate on it, The Gang's All Here is a personal favorite Mikey ep as well as giving some continuity regarding Bebop and Rocksteady and their old gang.
|
I suggest adding Take Me to your Leader, as it's a great Leo-centric episode and shows how the other Turtles trying to work together without him. Also, I recommend The Old Switchero (good body swap ep) and Burne's Blues (the only Burne-centric ep).

I've been trying to convince my girlfriend for awhile now to watch all of the OT with me since I've been wanting to rewatch it for awhile and I like torturing her with stuff I know she will hate. Her best excuse so far has been that it's just too much of a time investment. But cutting out a lot of "non-essential" episodes like this might be just the ticket.
