Is this what you expected a Kevin Eastman cartoon to be like?

So this short (I'm posting here rather than the Nick section because it doesn't seem to be part of the Nick cartoon's continuity, only vaguely inspired by it at best) Is co-written by Kevin Eastman and from what I've seen he also supplied the character designs or at least gave some direction on what the characters should look like. Hell, it even seems his wife voiced April.

So here's question, is it at all what you expected a cartoon with heavy involvement from Eastman to be like? I honestly don't know myself but I'm leaning towards yes, since the guy writes stories involving stolen brass cows and Mikey's drunken hallucinations.

Mew 07-24-2016 06:40 AM

I thought it would be dark, gritty and a blood fest. Instead it was comedic. But the fighting scene, and the April/TMNT/Kraang designs were top notch.

Don vs. Raph was vastly superior.

thundermaster612 07-24-2016 06:55 AM

Yes.

You really expected a nick short to be a "blood fest"?

No. I would assume Kevin Eastman's work to be a blood fest. If this wasn't on a kids channel, I assume it would be more like the comics.

Prowler 07-24-2016 09:16 AM

Dunno. never really thought about what kinda cartoons would Kevin Eastman make.

I liked this short.

I think works closer to the comics are more Peter's thing. Not the blood fest part though.

True. I was going off the first issue, but that was idiotic because all of Mirage is like that.

T. Somene that's never read past issue 1

Utrommaniac 07-24-2016 12:26 PM

I don't know about an Eastman cartoon, but that's just how I expected those cartoons to be anyway. It's pretty much a paint-by-numbers turtles at their very lowest denominator. And what's up with Mike yelling "interstellar" this time around?

(I am, however, going to polish up those Kraang suits...cool way to have two in one body)

Powder 07-24-2016 05:09 PM

All I know is I pretty much hated it.

This. One of the worst things I've ever sat through.

Commenter 42 07-24-2016 05:44 PM

After that short, my guess would be terrible.

IndigoErth 07-24-2016 06:01 PM

Can't say I had any particular expectations.

As for that short... It's okay. Cute, but I always found the "human TMNT" stuff from fans to be rather boring in most cases as it is, and now... just no one try to claim it as canon, please.

Crotch Kraang was the best thing about this.

+1ing this

Wildcat 07-25-2016 03:48 AM

I voted not sure because he made this for Nick. If he could make his own series it might be totally different and more serious.

Anyway I enjoyed it. Kinda seems like an updated OT.

Gokhan 07-25-2016 06:36 PM

Why couldn't they have been one white one Asian one black an one other ethnicity? I was bothered they all saw themselves as typical white teen

ProactiveMan 07-25-2016 08:26 PM

I didn't know this thing existed.. so much 'tude face.

pferreira 07-28-2016 04:17 PM

I love how everyone was expecting dark and gritty. Instead you guys got something the complete opposite. Let that be a lesson that Turtles doesn't need to be that way all the time.

Commenter 42 07-28-2016 04:34 PM

The only lesson was that Kevin Eastman makes awful cartoons.

Turtles are NEVER "dark and gritty". So sick of people having no f*cking idea what they're talking about.

Shark_Blade 07-28-2016 06:12 PM

It's the best thing Eastman ever did tbh.

Compared to the other interpretations of the turtles, the Mirage stuff is dark...although, I personally feel it's more sci-fi than dark.

If choosing though between Archie comics and Mirage, I do prefer Archie.

Jephael 08-02-2016 01:47 AM

It's possible marriage and fatherhood has changed Kevin. He certainly isn't the same guy he was 30 years ago. Maybe all the bloody violence isn't his cup of tea these days. People change... it's just part of life.

Andrew NDB 08-02-2016 11:23 AM

Put it this way, as I don't think the correct question is being asked:

"Is this what you expected a Kevin Eastman cartoon to be like, under the supervision and oversight of Nickelodeon/Viacom?"

Yes, yes it is. If left to his own devices and no tying of hands I suspect we would get something radically different.

For example, prior to the IDW deal he was pitching a hyper-violent continuation of "Return to New York" from Mirage all over the place. Nobody bit. Now he's over there right now probably storyboarding Bebop and Rocksteady bumbling around tripping over pizzas, because that's the place that's got the TMNT rights and that's the deal.

I liked this short.

Sixteen years ago, there was a theatrical sequel to the cult film Heavy Metal (1981) called Heavy Metal 2000 that was based mostly on a graphic novel Eastman did. The female protagonist was even modeled and named after his wife at the time.

It had plenty of blood, guts, and nudity, but not a terribly strong story. There is a nice little interview with Eastman in the DVD's special features.

Heavy Metal 2000 on IMDB

LilithMV 08-02-2016 08:57 PM

"Teenage Mutant Turtles, thingy's, from Sweden" Yeah, I wish. Well not really the hit-on-teen-girls turtles but the older ones, sure. Yeah I know they're suppose to be teens themselves, whatever.

I guess I have grown to dislike the more juvenile humor.

Other than that, I liked April and Donnie.

Oh man

I remember catching Heavy metal on TV late at night back when I was like 10-11 years old and wondering "oh cool, an an animated movie!"

...needless to say, I had NO IDEA what i was about to watch

Hm, more info on this? Do you mean directly after Return to New York during the Volume 1 era, or just another similar written storyline at some point?

If Eastman ever got to do a continuation of Mirage it makes you wonder, would he retcon/ignore everything from Volume 2 onward? He obviously wouldn't bother with Volume 4.

What I find really funny is that people go on and on about Turtles needing to be gritty, violent and serious. The 2003 series was a good example of this. But Eastman delivered within constraints of a Turtles TV episode was do the exact opposite which basically shows that even one of the creators supports a lighthearted approach to Turtles sometimes.

I remember someone here singling out the FW episode The Gang's All Here as his least favourite story because it goes against the idea of the Turtles being happy as themselves. That episode did the exact opposite by having Mikey want to become a human. Now granted in this short the Turtles are just covered in holographic projections of human teens but the fact that Eastman had them look like humans shows what some fans know about the Turtles co-creator's creative intentions.

Spoken like a true noob.

Mirage is full of light-hearted stuff, pal. Nobody has an issue with that. For Christ's sake, wanting something to take itself seriously at times does not mean you want a world devoid of joy. It's always you OT fanboys who make these blanket statements & presumptuous comments toward those of us who prefer a darker series, without any context about the actual material we're talking about.

Everybody knows Eastman's approach is "Fun". He's been responsible for a lot of silly things over the years, most notably Venus. He'd been toying with this idea (a turtle becoming human) for the would-be 4th movie over 20 years ago... We all know how he ticks pretty well.

Dude, that's the common complaints I hear constantly. "Turtles should be darker, what if Laird or Eastman did Turtles their way on TV, would we get darker Turtles". So what if I like the OT, got an issue with that? If anything you sound like the noob. ;)

When I was going back and forth with Kevin when we were chasing around who got the TMNT deal (Boom almost had it), that was the lynchpin in his proposal(s). A big maxi-series with "The Raid"/"District 13"-style fighting, parkour stuff, etc. (basically everything he promised the 2014 movie would have or likes to talk about), with the Turtles fighting the Foot on a massive scale with a ticking clock. I don't think he had a story mapped out in his head so much as kind of knowing the action beats of it he wanted to hit. The idea -- at the time -- was to piggyback an Image finisher with Gary and Frank involved on the top of it, but after Boom passed, IDW scored the deal with Nick and it became readily clear that Nick wasn't allowing IDW to do anything remotely violent like that.

It was an odd thing, though. I would ask Kevin, "A follow-up to 'Return to New York,' that's great, I love that story, and that's a great era to revisit. But why not right after 'City at War'? I mean, you might as well at that point, and fans loved 'City at War.'" But it was like "City at War" was a dirty word to him, for some reason. He wouldn't even entertain the notion. I've asked Peter if there was any bad blood between them about "City at War" and he doesn't think so, but I'm not entirely convinced.

I don't know that he'd retcon it, but my gut is that he'd definitely ignore it.

That's bizarre, considering "City at Wall" was so perfect. BIZARRE.

I dunno... it might just be as simple as him not being all that involved in the story after #50. In one of those IDW collections wasn't he saying some nonsense about, "we really were excited to create Karai, Shredder's daughter in the story"? I swear I remember hearing that. And cringing.
