Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

I've heard that because nunchakus were banned in the UK, Peter Laird & Kevin Eastman had to make two versions of the Ninja Turtles show, they even had to rename it Hero Turtles, not Ninja Turtles. As Michelangelo's weapon of choice was banned in the UK, they replaced it with a grapple hook. Is this true? Just rumours is all I've heard.

Karpo_007 11-09-2003 04:27 AM

True, but it hasn't got anything to do with Eastman and Laird, and the name was changed because Ninja was a banned word in UK.

Misfit 11-09-2003 05:37 AM

It was changed because the ridiculously over sensitive UK censors thought the word "ninja" was too violent, ditto with the 'chunks.

Savanti Romero 11-10-2003 12:03 AM

They banned the word ninja? They banned naunchakus? Not katanas? I hope they banned some weapons a little worse than them, like maybe guns! That's is crazy!

Ironic somehow isn't it that the Brittish can banned naunchakus but it's okay for them to have nuclear bombs.

Savanti Romero 11-10-2003 12:18 AM

Very ironic! I can't imagine why they did that! :x

Stupidity is why...Pure stupidity.

Savanti Romero 11-10-2003 01:06 AM

Well said Malignant, well said.

Reznorite420 11-10-2003 01:13 AM

Somebody, please, hold me back, since I'm having a hard time keeping myself from beating the living bejesus out of whoever said the taboo "H" word...

*sigh*...That should be a new forum rule: any reference of TMHT should result in a warning at the very least

Barkworm 11-10-2003 01:30 AM

Weren't the nunchucks also banned in the US? :-?

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 01:32 AM

Yes, but not before season 4.

Barkworm 11-10-2003 01:49 AM

The UK banned them BEFORE season 4??? In Germany we also had the Hero Turtles but I saw a lot of episodes with Nunchakus.

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 03:28 AM

Yep, Michelangelo seemed to disappear when the fights started.

What goods a grapple hook in a fight? Unless you just use it as a strangle wire.

Nunchuks ARE worse than katanas.

Beyond that, they have/had a gang connection.

Sayonara.

How'd you come to that conclusion? While some people have had suffered a broken jaw from nunchakus, many have been decapitated by katanas, or any other sword for that reason.

Eidiot88 11-10-2003 05:53 AM

In some ways 'chucks are worse than katanas, ever seen a Bruce Lee movie? he made the 'chucks look brutal.

Savanti Romero 11-10-2003 10:04 AM

Well that might be so, but what about guns?

Reznorite420 11-10-2003 10:06 AM

Please, lock this thread already...it's too much for me to keep seeing the references to the dreaded "H" word :dead:

Pizza Face 11-10-2003 10:36 AM

It is okay for the uk to not let the citizens have or talk about weapons. First of all, state sponsered violence is not bad. It is good. When a country attacks people, it is good. but, people attacking other people is bad. Hence the ban on chucks and the legality of nukes. Also, those brits are so drunk all the time, they would use these weapons on each other. could be messy, and you run the risk of losing taxpayers.

Misfit 11-10-2003 11:14 AM

Ahem, PizzaFace, can we not do *too* much Brit bashing on here? I'm all for bitching about censorship but lets not go completely overboard. Some of us are English you know. ;)

Pizza Face 11-10-2003 11:32 AM

I am sorry. I have a Union Jack at home, which I hail every morning. I am as english as they come

Reznorite420 11-10-2003 12:11 PM

Bowser_Koopa will die at my hands!!!!!

NinjaGirl21: You think Pizza Face is bad? You should've seen the posts I made when I first joined ;) HT and Machi can fill you in on what happened.

Well...it's not like you can prevent kids seeing swords in films/cartoons/TV shows at some point or other. Nunchukus are different, no British kids had ever heard of them pre-Turtlemania.

Also, nunchuks are funnier weapons. Hitting people is less messy and therefore more comical than stabbing/slashing them, in my opinion. So kids are more likely to wanna mess around with them, maybe.

What bugs me is the sais were left in...I mean all the other weapons have non-injuring uses. What can you do with a sai besides stab people?

heretic888 11-10-2003 12:52 PM

Contrary to popular opinion, sai are not pointed. They are blunt weapons.

But you can still stab with them, right? I mean, I can think of a dozen old "Elektra"/"Daredevil" storylines and tons of movies where someone gets stabbed with a sai.

Bowser_Koopa 11-10-2003 12:56 PM

dracula used to round his wooden stabbers or knives, or whatever, i don't know what they are called in english, the fact is that he rounded them so that it would be harder and more painful to stab

Misfit 11-10-2003 01:02 PM

Stakes?

Bowser_Koopa 11-10-2003 01:05 PM

i guess....

heretic888 11-10-2003 01:27 PM

*chuckles* Sure, if you're a comic book character with amazingly exceptional strength. Of course, if you have that, then there are a lot of things you could stab people with....

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 01:32 PM

Raph has used his sais many times for both cutting and stabbing. Not to mention throwing. So I belive his sais are sharpened.

*chuckles* Well, that has more to do with a lack of research on the part of certain writers than anything else. This is why they also call Leo's swords "katana" when they are actually ninja-to.

Cutting and stabbing, though?? A pointed sai is one thing, but a bladed one?? Very very odd.....

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 02:00 PM

Yes you can make cut wounds with pointed metal objects, but natrually not very deep.

heretic888 11-10-2003 02:06 PM

hmmm

Yes, but those aren't actually cuts but more like rips or tears.

In any event, sai were indeed Japanese weapons and were blunt. They were specifically designed to be anti-sword truncheons (i.e., blunt ass-whippin' device), the pronges used to pin a sword blade in place.

Anarky 11-10-2003 02:09 PM

i first met the turtles as the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. i was very confused when i saw them as the TMNT a few years later.

Thanks for clearing that up

And Rez': Heeeee---ro Turtles.

another strange thing is that the german theme song always said:

"Teenage mutant hero turtles
super strong hero turtles..."

it even remained when they suddenly changd to Ninja turtles. i always thought that that was kinda funny

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 02:11 PM

I know, and like you said, either Eastman and Laird didn't do much research about the weapons, or decided to take some liberties.

Pizza Face 11-10-2003 03:02 PM

heretic is wrong...again

you are right that they are pretty much blunt and are used to stop swords, but so what? cant raph sharpen his? also, if you were to throw a real sai, it would dig in but good. But ya know, you are all trying to tell everyone all the funky little ninja things you know, but what you arent telling people is that warriors of japan took liberties with their weapons. Many people would study in a certain school, and then create their own fighting techniques and even invent weapons. So, just chill on you high hill friend. We are all just trying to talk and you are trying to show how smart you think you are.

Karpo_007 11-10-2003 03:06 PM

heretic888 11-10-2003 05:27 PM

Exactly, karpo. :D

I don't see why he'd bother. If he wanted a stabbing instrument, there are other more useful weapons... like, oh say, a knife. If we are talking about accuracy here, I'd say Raph can stab people with his sai because of his exceptional strength not because it is pointed.

Quote:

Not unless you have the strength of 5 normal men.

*chuckles* No, I am stating facts. This is what a sai was. If Raph and/or Splinter "took liberties" then fine. But, the fact remains that sai were not pointed weapons.
