SDCC 2019 - TMNT: The Road to 100

I suck at waiting, so I decided to get the ball rolling on the discussion of today's IDW TMNT panel at SDCC. Here's the info:

Quote:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Road to 100

Moderator Patrick Ehlers talks with TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, writer Tom Waltz, and editor Bobby Curnow as they share behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of the longest-running TMNT comic ever! The team will also share advance looks at the upcoming issues leading to the monumental milestone #100 issue, which comes out this fall.

Friday July 19, 2019 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Is anyone else hyped? What news do you expect to see come out of this panel?

Igglet 07-19-2019 12:27 PM

I think they might tease some big event that'll lead into the end of #98, which will be when Splinter dies. Which is the issue I predicted he was gonna die in. Not #96, nuh uh, you guys are imagining things.

But no, for real, I imagine they'll reveal the covers of the upcoming issues, some plot details of Act 2 of the arc and perhaps a tease on where the story of Shredder in Hell might be going.

ChosenOne 07-19-2019 12:28 PM

Yeah, I imagine we'll get some covers and some of them were being kept secret because of Jennika.

If Splinter does die in this arc, it has to be between #96 and #98. Bobby told us which issues comprise the second act of City at War, and the second act is typically when a story reaches its lowest point for the protagonists, so...

SaurusX 07-19-2019 12:52 PM

Stealth cancellations seem to be the rage this year. Ends at issue 98.

Weapons@theready 07-19-2019 12:57 PM

Have they said concretely what they’re doing numbering wise after #100?

I know I'm not a very reliable speculator right now (though I DID GUESS THE JENNY REVEAL YOU BASTARDS), but I would say I'm 100% sure Splinter is dying in #98. Knowing the story is split into 3 acts and not 2 parts like we originally thought opened my eyes.

If Splinter doesn't end up dying in #98, y'all can double ban me.

Bobby has revealed that they're keeping the numbering. So, #101 after #100.

Alright, I'll have my double banner ready just in case.

rayfillet101 07-19-2019 03:50 PM

No news yet? Chomping at the bit!

Vicky82 07-19-2019 03:51 PM

Lots of pics here

ChosenOne 07-19-2019 03:57 PM

So, three new covers: Splinter behind bars (#99), Hob and the Mutanimals (with Raph) in front of news cameras (#98?), and Clan Hamato and their allies poised for battle (#100?).

And I confirmed with Tom that Sophie will be doing a continuing ark, but the length of it hasn’t been determined yet.
I'm not quite clear on what this means, though. A post-#100 arc?

CyberCubed 07-19-2019 04:02 PM

Arcs could be anywhere from 4 issues to 7 issues or whatever. I expect a "breather" story after issue 100.

I think this just means Sophie is doing more than just #101 and will have a whole arc post 100

Don’t know about Sophie taking over the writing. Her one shots have been good (Alopex micro and Leonardo macro) but her arcs are left to be desired.

ChosenOne 07-19-2019 04:29 PM

A World Tour arc done by Campbell would be a dream come true. Utter perfection! I mean, after you save the city from a rogue ninja clan, a racist midget, a glorified toaster, a scheming businessman, a couple of immortals, a literal Prada-wearing devil and who knows what else, you sorta deserve a vacation...

Also, is it me or does that arcing thing in the background of the #100(?) cover look like a scorpion's tail? Is Clan Hamato surrounded? By Null's minions? Huh... We need higher-res versions of those pics ASAP!

And how come there's been no mention of Bebop and Rocksteady in all of this? What could they be doing?

I'm not a big fan of the Leonardo macro or Karai's Path, but I really liked the Northampton arc and the Alopex micro, so right now she's 50/50 for me.

Weapons@theready 07-19-2019 05:05 PM

If Splinter does indeed die during City at War, I think Sophie doing an arc with each of the Turtles and others dealing with his passing and their grief/guilt associated with it would be amazing

ChosenOne 07-19-2019 05:13 PM

Cover for #100, cropped and color corrected:

Yeah, that's totally Zodi in the background. Even with the low res (sorry about that) you can make out the shape of her head along with the tail.

Jennika's absence is intriguing...

Also notice "The End" under the title. Further proof that it's #100.

You take this so seriously.

What if he doesn't die at all? Triple ban?

What if he dies but is resurrected?

If that happens, the mods are just gonna pop up to my house with a glock or something to ban me from real life.

Weapons@theready 07-19-2019 06:05 PM

Also, back to the subject at hand, could someone get Leo a damn juice box?

Roseangelo 07-19-2019 07:56 PM

I wasn’t able to elaborate much during the panel because I was trying to type and post things quickly. But basically, after 100, Tom Kevin and the art team are going to take a slight breather, since they’ve been doing this for basically 100 months straight. Sophie will take over to write and draw some issues. But she just agreed to do this (despite other obligations) and so there aren’t really any details yet on what this will entail.

CyberCubed 07-19-2019 08:08 PM

Makes sense for a bit of a fresh start as well as a breather after all this heavy stuff. I wouldn't mind if the Turtles literally go on a vacation (world tour, Europe), just to get away from it all.

They still have villains like Ch'rell and Null and I assume the Pantheon to deal with after issue 100, but I guess that can wait for now.

Utrommaniac 07-19-2019 08:08 PM

>Sees part seven.
"Rat jail Rat Jail Rat Jail"

Weird time to show flashbacks to when Slash died, but ok.

Super cool that Sophie's taking the helm for a little bit. She's right for the job, especially with how dedicated she is. Looking forward to that!

Thanks for the amazing work! :) Was there any mention of Bebop and Rocksteady during the panel?

rayfillet101 07-19-2019 08:28 PM

Thanks so much for the updates! So exciting. I kinda wish they saved the reveal of Jenny and the Power Rangers crossover for SDCC just to have something to announce, but having Sophie on the main comic for awhile is very good! That would be December, right?

CyberCubed 07-19-2019 08:35 PM

Since the series is now officially going on passed issue 100, I guess barring any surprise cancellations out of nowhere, it should go on for 150 issues at the minimum. Since they usually divide the series up into 50 issue chunks with smaller arcs within those segments.

A 125 minimum is my bet, seeing as how those 50-issue chunks are roughly divided in half by big events (City Fall for the first 50, Trial of Krang for the other). If a cancellation should arise, it would probably happen around #125. Otherwise we're looking at a clean 150 issues.

Not to mention Universe lasted for 25 issues as well even though it was already flagging, for what that's worth.

CyberCubed 07-19-2019 08:44 PM

That sounds about right. I do hope that instead of introducing more new major villains we get to see whatever they planned for Ch'rell and Null. They've sat on them for a long time and post issue 100 is where they should shine.

rayfillet101 07-19-2019 09:00 PM

Any guesses on miniseries or one shots? Maybe, with Sophie on the main comic, Tom can write some other stories he wishes he could tell out of the main story? :o

Not a guess per se, but I'd love to see a Leatherhead mini sometime after #100. And if things go the way they seem to be headed, a second Mutanimals mini would also be most welcome.

It wouldn’t be a bad time to see micros pop up again.
Leatherhead would be a good one, and I’d imagine Jennika would get one as well. If Sophie wasn’t doing the main story after 100, I would love to see her tackle a Jenny micro. I also think we need a proper Bishop micro and Null as well if they are the threats going forward.

Would be surreal if they did some team up issues a la archie: Donatello and Leatherhead, Donatello and Mondo, Donatello and Merdude?

Would love to see more micros: Null, Bishop, Kitsune, Slash, Pete, Nobody, Jennika, Leatherhead, Pepperoni, Renet...

More mutanimals is always a good thing too! I'd really like to see more screentime for a lot of the characters before introducing too many new characters for the near future.

.

If we’re doing team ups, sign me up for Raph and Hob

rayfillet101 07-19-2019 09:22 PM

Alopex and Nobody could be a 4 issue mini...
