GTA 6 gets a release date!

Fans have been waiting for almost eight years for a new Grand Theft Auto game, and according to one leaker with a solid track record, that gap between main entry releases won't be over until 2025. Something which Take-Two's statements during a recent shareholder event backed up recently.

Tom Henderson--who previously leaked Call of Duty and Battlefield 2042 details--has released a new video and in it, he claimed that GTA 6 will be set in a modern-day version of Vice City. This runs contrary to previous reports that GTA 6 would be set in the 1980s, with Henderson claiming that developer Rockstar wants to ensure as much freedom as possible for its staff when it comes to creating content for GTA Online.
Henderson also discussed a potential for the GTA 6 map to change over time, similar to how Epic Games regularly overhauls its Fortnite map during end-of-season events. There was also a mention of GTA 6 having multiple playable characters, something which GTA 5 introduced to the series when it first came out. Even if these rumors are true, fans are going to be in for a long wait due to several factors. Henderson said that Rockstar has placed a greater emphasis on employee wellbeing in the wake of several reports detailing the crunch work conditions that were implemented before Red Dead Redemption 2 came out.

Most games that aren't Call of Duty/Assassin's Creed now come out over a decade apart.

The next Elder Scrolls is slated for around that time too. Anything that isn't a Ubisoft franchise actually has noticeable time gaps now to make games.

AquaParade 06-30-2021 02:04 PM

It's because everyone is playing GTA online and spending a ton of money in that ecosystem.

Rockstar has no reason to put put another GTA until that slows down. It's like waiting for your little brother to finish his peas so you can all sit down and have ice cream.

The Deadman 07-13-2021 09:18 AM

Honestly, I think GTA is gonna go the way of Call of Duty in that GTA Online will be their version of Warzone in that the content is always changing but you don't need to download anything new. GTA 6 might not have any multi to it.

Who needs GTA6 anymore, Oculus just announced GTA San Andreas! Holy crap, after playing Resident Evil 4 on Oculus last week, it is an amazing experience you literally feel you're there. Can't wait to play San Andreas and actually be in the world!
Damn, I feel like a little kid excited for a video game again.

I wonder what you see when you're banging a prostitute in the game. And I'm assuming the Oculus GTA San Andreas will be based within the GTA Trilogy Remastered versions that come out in a week or so?

Yeah I fear for the prostitutes being removed since the removal of sexual references in RE4 were removed because FB asked Capcom if it was ok. They mostly want a "clean" platform and remove themselves from controversy, hell even Rockstar has censored some stuff IIRC on their own. Killing prostitutes in VR will likely be considered "too much".

The RE4 on oculus is its own thing, from what I can tell it has better textures and some models than the original games but it doesn't have all the upgrades the other console versions have had in recent years either. The Quest 2 processor is still fairly simple, so I'm guessing San Andreas will be somewhere in between but not as good as the remaster. The immersion will more than make up for it though.

Well we'll know soon enough I guess. it's funny how all the controversy GTA had in the early 00's with Jack thompson, conservative groups and the hot coffee mod only to see them fold for liberal groups. We saw the Simpsons give in to censorship but perhaps wanting to appeal to Disney helped make those decisions. Who knows.

Now we don't know if GTA SA will be First person view or not, if it isn't then it'll just handle it like the normal game does. I hope it is first person though or I'll lose a lot of the hype, but if it is indeed first person then you can bet you won't be able to see anything as it would be considered a sex game then and have an AO rating.

If so -- and I think that would be stupid if so -- it would be interesting to see if, conversely, they decide killing cops is still OK.

GTA 6 Release Date Could Be As Early As 2023, Analyst Suggests

There are also rumros about Bulyl 2 release this year but we will see. I will play again GTA5 when they relase the remake later this year. iam curious how much better i will look my pc now since it is much more powerful than in 2015 when they released gta 5 for pc then.

Andrew NDB 07-28-2022 08:47 PM

Seems like it will be set in Miami (Vice City) and features a female co-lead. It sounds like you can toggle between her and her boyfriend with like a Bonny & Clyde vibe. Maybe that's how they get out of letting players bang hookers?

https://www.darkhorizons.com/gta6-he...emale-co-lead/

The Deadman 07-28-2022 09:01 PM

I dont think that's gonna matter based on people reading the woman will be the lead part. Now GTA is apparently woke.

Doesn't sound like there is a lead. It'll be like GTA5 except 2 characters (a couple) instead of 3.

I don't really see a problem in and of itself. At a certain point it'd be weird if there wasn't a playable female character.

shredder orokusaki 07-31-2022 04:26 AM

The latest leak say it will be from April until May which means that it could release in 8 onths from now at the earliest if the release date is April. They might announce something in the next big games event which is Games com at August 24!

See you guys in 2 more years. Haha.

CyberCubed 12-04-2023 05:46 PM

Looks really good, but by 2025 we'll be halfway through this generation (or even most of it, since this gen started in 2020).

All I can say is thank god Rockstar decided not to annualize GTA like Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, or so many other franchises. It makes the wait for new GTA games feel much more special and a big event each gen.

Andrew NDB 12-04-2023 06:40 PM

I thought for sure it'd be a spring, summer 2024 release. Lame.

sdp 12-04-2023 07:03 PM

Am I the only one that thinks the graphics look bad? It all looks like CG from the late 2010s if this is coming out in 2025 I'd expect something better.

I dunno I think the extremes are bad. This will come out 12 years after 5. The difference between San Andreas and GTA4 was 4 years, I think that makes more sense. I can have a new GTA every 5-6 years but over a decade?

3/Vice City/San Andreas were basically annual releases but I'm glad they didn't continue that trend. The formula was still so fresh each game felt different but it does need a break after that. Assassins Creed's first 3 games felt so amazing but after that they started to feel so generic, it's only been a few stand out AC games every few years so yeah I think not having annual releases is a big plus.

Andrew NDB 12-04-2023 07:23 PM

But between GTA3 and GTA 4 was 7 years. Same between GTA 4 and 5. So a little more in line if you're simply looking at numericals. GTAVC and GTASA just used the GTA3 engine but the numerical ones never recycle an engine.

XERO 12-04-2023 08:06 PM

GTASA is still my favorite GTA game, just for the setting and that it gave me a relatable protagonist. I grew up on the 'hood movies, so it was right up my alley.

Plus, CJ is just so damn cool, and arguably the most successful GTA protagonist by game's end.

GTA4 and 5 use the same engine.

No they don't. The physics are very different, particularly with the driving.

Zulithe 12-05-2023 01:17 AM

I've read the characters and story are inspired by The Place Beyond The Pines, and I believe it. Lots of similarities are pretty apparent. Great movie too.

Physics - are not the whole engine, though. They can be modified separately from the rest of its functions.

Both games are using RAGE engine, obviously modified for each release, but it is the same engine nevertheless. It also powers both RDR.

If you told someone this was from a movie and not a videogame, it's be believeable. If this is how the game will look 100% of the time outside of cutscenes, then we really have reached the point where graphics have improved so much they're almost indistinguishable from live action.

Of course when you're in the open world it likely won't look as good due to the amount of people they have to have at once, but for certain shots like this it's amazing. 2025 is going to be crazy.

Sumac 12-05-2023 05:54 AM

No, it doesn't look anywhere near "real life-like". Even on an old screen with SD resolution.
It looks like an amazing CGI, circa 2010+, but definitely not real.

Lighting is not realistic, clothes and skin as well.

sdp 12-05-2023 09:25 AM

what? no way it clearly looks CG, it's also coming out on current gen consoles so it's restricted by that, sadly PC even if it looks way better will be restricted by having to deal with the aging hardware of the PS5/Series X.
It doesn't look impressive to me at all, I mean clearly it's better than GTA5 but that game is over a decade old. Imagine comparing a game from 2011 to one from 2001. I know there's diminishing returns in terms of graphics since the HD era but it still looks clearly CG, I can think of games out now that look better. That's the problem with realistic graphics, they age fast, but in this case I think it already looks clearly CG and it's two years away. At this point most games should just stick to a specific art style that isn't realistic and won't age badly.

Also remember this will be the graphics of the GTA game you'll be playing for 10 years again. Let's see how well those graphics hold up in 2035.

Andrew NDB 12-05-2023 09:49 AM

It looks "a little better than [the PS5 version of] GTA5" which is plenty for me. The lighting effects seem great. I see a bit of ray tracing, too.

Hm, then at least they put the engine "back in the shop" a bit between GTA 4 and 5. Not so with GTASA and GTAVC, beyond minor tweaks (food in SA, dating mechanics, etc.).

Consider there are two years before release, so graphics could be improved.

If anything, they radically changed art style and beefed up renderer (part of the engine responsible for the picture).

Food and dating and other mechanics have nothing to do with engine, however, - its just scripting.

Primarily, what depends on engine is quality of the picture, amount of objects and effects on a screen. Physics and sound sometimes realized through separate solutions, think of them like attachable modules to the main engine. They also can be modified separately.
At least that's how it work with Source (Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Apex Legends).

Sumac 12-06-2023 12:04 AM

I forgot to add, that there is fun connection between GTA and my two favorite series, TMNT and Mortal Kombat.

I think, it was mentioned here, somewhere, but just a reminder - early GTA games: 3, Vice City, San Andreas were using RenderWare engine, this same engine was also used for Konami TMNT games from early 2000s: TMNT (2003), BattleNexus, Mutant Nightmare and Mutant Melee. It also was used for Mortal Kombat games of that era.

And later both TMNT and MK characters had appeared in the Injustice 2, made by MK creators. Though, on a different engine, but its quite fun to see how those things are interconnected.

CyberCubed 12-06-2023 03:26 PM

I get the feeling Lucia will be on a path of redemption similar to Arthur Morgan or John Marston from Red Dead Redemption.

We know she starts off in jail being let go on parole:

https://static0.gamerantimages.com/w...140&h=&dpr=1.5

On the cover she has one of those ankle monitors on, like those police monitors when you're under house arrest:

https://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki....jpg?width=640

While there's the obvious Bonnie and Clyde angle everyone picked up on, I get the feeling Rockstar is going to make her the first "good" GTA protagonist with morals, coming off of Red Dead and the fact that well, she's a woman.

Sure you'll be able to do whatever you want in the open world and kill everyone if you want, but the story missions will probably steer you in the right direction.

Pretty sure CJ has the edge in that department.

CyberCubed 12-07-2023 04:19 PM

You were still pretty much playing as characters who enjoyed doing crime in previous games. GTA V literally is about this as well.

I get the feeling making two Red Dead games has basically steered the perception that Rockstar will want to stick with redeemable protagonists because it makes them more popular, and if Lucia really is on house arrest from jail...it's basically the same thing as John Marston from the first Red Dead. The police had him under lock and key but he was allowed to roam around and track down the old members of his gang.

That's why playing as a criminal in Red Dead didn't make much sense, because John would never go and kill innocent people and the story of the game was him laying low and trying to redeem himself, not stay as an outlaw. I found it difficult to do crimes (besides a few times) in Red Dead games because it just didn't fit the character or the story.

XERO 12-07-2023 05:41 PM

CJ literally left Los Santos because he got his little brother Brian killed. He went to Liberty City and pretty much had to do crime to get by, not because he enjoyed it. When you grow up in a 'hood environment as he did, it's not really about "enjoying" the aspects of crime and violence. Anyone who says otherwise are just psychopaths.

That was just his normality due to where he was brought up, but I don't think he particularly enjoyed being a criminal. And I'd like to believe he DID redeem himself by the end of the game. If anything, it was his brother Sweet who didn't want to redeem himself because he was too caught up in that gang mentality. Not to mention being institutionalized and not wanting to look beyond Grove Street.

Meanwhile, CJ went all around the entire state of San Andreas, freed his brother from prison. Also, he became a pilot, casino owner, has connects with the Triad and is also a manager for the top rapper of that generation. Lucia has some pretty big shoes to fill when it comes to morality.

I can't really say the same for Niko or even the 3 mains from GTAV (especially Trevor).
