A Mikey's weapons question
I 've always wondered why Mikey's weapons changed from one season to another in classic show. He was the Turtle with the nunchucks but from all of a sudden he changed to a hook with a rope. Does anyone know why they changed the nunchucks to this? :-?
I am happy that he's back with his original weapons in the new show. :) |
Someone please put a sticky on this thread, these questions are common.
|
You can find the answer to this, and a lot of other TMNT questions you probably have in the FAQ thread posted as a sticky thread above this one. But the answer is that censors frowned on their use. They were always edited out in the UK, and at the end of season three, they were taken out completely. Although you can still see them in all the video games, movies, and even theme song intros that occured well past season three.

The animators got lazy and didnt want to draw Mikey whriling them around anymore so they gave him a useless grappling hook

Y'know, if you don't know the answer --- you really shouldn't give one. It just confuses people who are genuinely looking for what actually happened. |
sheesh...all these years and i never realized that...huh
|
For gods sake, this must be the third time I've said this. PLEASE PUT THIS IN THE TMNT FAQ! The only possible reason is that people thought they were too violent (like swords and sais aren't.)
|
I put it in the TMNT faq a few days ago.

Thanks for the info I didn't know that. The nunchuncks and Donatello's Bo are the less violent weapons ,those people were crazy. :P
And Shredder had spikes all over!! LOL And they didn't censored that. |

It was a bold-faced lie that smacks in the face of what people really know about what happened. As before, misinformation like that only confuses people trying to have their questions answered. If you don't know the answer, that does not excuse lying. |
Calm down heretic888 and Spitfire666xXxXx. Spitfire can post what he said since he didn't do it to offend anyone and it IS his opinion. And plus, it is just a cartoon, it is nothing to argue about.

The reason they switched Mikey's nunchakus into a grappling hook was that when children pretended to be the turtles, it was easy to make nunchakus. However, not many children know how to actually use them.
The nunchaku is capable of generating 800 pounds per square inch of pressure, more than enough to break a human bone. Children often attempted to mimic Mikey's movements and ended up hurting themselves or others. About Leo's katanas, it is much harder for a child to make a real sword than to take two pieces of wood and some rope or chain to make a nunchaku. On top of that, many children understand the concept of "sharp" being "dangerous." The weapon was not removed from the American shows because of the gang connection (like in Europe) but because of the simplicity of a child being able to hurt himself. I believe that European viewers complained about getting censored and cut versions of the show, so to kill two birds with one stone the animators just switched Mikey's weapon to the grappling hook and they did not have to worry about the storyline suffering from miscuts. |
That makes a lot of sence. The hook was just stupid I hated that thing. As a kid I always wondered where Mikey's Nunchakus went.

It takes eight pounds of pressure per square inch to break bone. The nunchukus generate ninety! Taken from the back of Mikey's AF card. |
hmm... I'll do some research into then and change it if I'm wrong...
Zachatello, how accruate do you think those cards are? |
I've been hit with nunchaku and i've seen people be hit with them. One guy in my former studio got his wrist shattered by them. And I got hit in the head, and if they don't break a bone they hurt REALLY bad.
